I had an 02 M5 as a daily driver for three years. It was a stunning combination of LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. Purchased it with 69k miles in it and put 45k miles on in three years. It did everything, daily drives, long trips, autocross, and winter beater. Absolutely an engaging drive and an intoxicating soundtrack with the perfect blend of luxury and sport. At the right time when i was in the position to buy one i pulled the trigger and got myself a 99` in Antrazit Grau. Luckily living in Germany i am able to have a blast with it on the Autobahn hitting top speed on unrestricted sections and i even took it on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The 6 cyl ones have better steering too because they got rack and pinion unlike the V8's. Plus they're super reliable, especially the 530d with the iron block M57, million miles easy if you take care of it. Plus we euros got the alu block M52, which you can just slap reground M54 cams, M54 crank, M57 rods, and a turbo on to make some cheap reliable 500hp. You could take it to the extremes and make over a 1000 on them, probably on the stock cranks if you don't go past 7500 RPM to do it, but if you balance it for higher RPM it'll glady do that too. Super capable and reliable stuff in the right hands. Also the suspension is like anti-Ford for that era. I was working at the dealership when these were introduced. They would have me take out prospective customer and "show them what it will do." Having Carte Blanche like that was wonderful so the first thing I would do would be to turn off the traction control. Yeehaaa! As these cars aged there were a ton of issues with clutch and vanos problems so many were sold needing help instead of getting fixed. Plus, people ran the crap out of them. They have the usual E39 problems like busted plastic seat surrounds and pixelated dash displays plus I always preferred the ones without nav display as they don't look so dated now. I sold my last BMW (93 M5) last year after 31 years of having one in the driveway. Just don't care for the new offerings and BMW has made it very expensive to maintain a "classic." The E39 M5 is a great car if it's been maintained properly and now is old enough that most of the early problems have already been addressed at some point.

FINALLY, SOME ONE 'GETS' IT. THE MORE PEOPLE MAKE VIDEOS ON THE CAR, THE HIGHER PRICES ARE GONNA GO UP. The THING is, people have BEEN doing this with the E30, look now. Now people are starting to do it with the E39 M5, and NOT JUST the M5, but with ALL E39s. Now, I know I shouldn't be saying this but it's TRUE, If you cannot afford an M5 that much, people would FLOCK to the 540i M sport, and covert it to manual too. Or look for a manual one. Because it's the 'near' M5. Even a channel called Prepetunal Radio Networks made a video with the EXACT same name, and its been up for some time, blame him for making prices go up on those too. See, that's what people do, look for alternatives. Are you trying to buy an M5? And how long for?
Prices for these cars have risen sharply in recent years, as they have for E46 M3. That said, ANY E39 is a good car. The M5 is a good, fast car. But your 530i and 540i Sport in particular make a great, enjoyable daily driver, but without M-car running costs. Definitely worth a look if the M5 is no longer within budget.
My first job was pumping gas at a small town gas station. I was 15. This was in the early 2000's when the E39 M5 was new. Some local guy from Essex, Connecticut had a Lemans blue E39 M5 with a ski rack and Supersprint exhaust that used to drive through town. I still think about the sound of that car driving by.
And if you can't afford an M5, the 530d versions are also quite fun. One with the sport package has the same visuals and a very torquie 6 cilinder engine that is reliable and will always put a simile on your face. With a simple remap 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds is a tone of fun for the money
I had an ex police car 530 d and manual transmission made it a brilliant car and great fuel economy too, just rescued a 1997 520i manual from a bush it’s been in for 17 years and it’s going ok just needs a few bits doing and I’ll have an early model to cruise in again although miles from the 530 power hahaaaa
I am Lucky enough to own one of these, a '99 model in Carbon Black. To me, even though is is now 21 years old, it remains a timeless classic, and still as beautiful today as the day she was born. It also astonishes me that BMW were able to make a beast like this all those years ago, and in my opinion, have advanced very little over that time. Some may even say they have succeeded in going backwards..
I remember seeing the m5 video with Clive owen and madonna back in 2003 or 2005. And that made me want one so bad. Over the years I've owned Mercedes, Lexus and Porsche but never got an m5. By the time I decided to get one of these, the prices skyrocketed. They are way too expensive now.
This was BMW’s era of absolute perfection. The styling and handling haven’t been replicated since. You say “inspires confidence”, and that’s an understatement… I had a 2001 325xi wagon, and it was so stable in turns at speed that I shredded sidewalls on Nokians (twice). If a curve sign said 35mph, I knew I could do almost 70. No complicated infotainment, no flash, analog gauges, no touch screens, no iDrive, a bump shift that actually worked, direct analog steering, a responsive slant six, and timeless styling… I should’ve never have sold it.
This is incredible, I never knew Magnus had about 4 BMWs as well in his collection. But I'm glad to see him behind the wheels of one of these and ask the proper questions around price & purpose this car provides in the life of the owner. Not everyone would go to a track or have intentions of stripping their cars naked for AutoCross days, so a lot of times those RUclips car channels that strictly rate a car simply by how well it'll be useful mainly on a track and not for the rest of the time it'll be used on the road in the real world, actually lose their audience to a wide margin.
@@vosedon It's funny. In 2009, I was trying to deal with the Pontiac salesman on a manual G8 GXP but they wouldn't budge. A friend told me to just go get an E39 M5, since that is the car the G8 GXP was trying to be anyway. I've had an E39 M5 as a daily driver ever since!
Drove the E39 M5 couple of month ago... Its an unbelievable Car, it feeels so Compact and sporty and its a 4 door saloon, and the sound oh man the sound 😍
Best car I’ve owned hands down. Does everything for me. Always brings a smile to my face. This is my third. Owned it in carbon Schwartz, titanium silver and now jet black. I would love the alpine white though.
E39 's are my favour since 2005; started with a 528i manual Touring sports version wich was replaced after 350K by a 530d Touring also with sport suspension and interior. Since last spring a 530i sedan, also with manual gearbox, is my daily driver and it's my preferred car, rather than my classic E31 V12!

I do love that you are bringing back to You Tube a great car channel reminiscent of the hay day of You Tube 6 years ago with car channels like /Drive and Motortrend. Thank You. Please dont jump to greener pastures as the mention dead channels did. Super enjoyable.
My Brother and I build a wagon E39 M5 Alpine white, with all oem parts except for rear bumper and exhaust. We love it and plan to keep it in the stable for a long long time. Best decision we’ve ever made, huge fan of the older generation vehicles.
Australian fan here. I have a 2002 E39 M5 (146000 kms) for weekends and a 2000 E39 528i Msport for daily use (230000kms), both Titanium Silver. I look after them meticulously and they are both an absolute pleasure to own, I'll never sell either of them.
Owning an e39 M5 is number 1 thing on my "bucket list" since I know about BMW as a brand. The naturally aspirated V8 S62 is just notorious. Currently own an e39 523iA, can't even imagine how is the M5 on road.
I've owned the E39 M5 and E9 but my favorite is still the classic E9 and the one for me. I sold the E39 M5 and still have the E9 and I don't think I will ever sell my E9 3.0csi. Magnus needs to drive the E9.
Fantastic video, I first saw the E39 in HP2 on PS2 and ever since then when I think of BMW I think of that car. The E39 M5, just a quintessential BMW. Cant think of a nicer 4 door.
E39 M5 in alpine white with caramel interior 🔥 my favorite car I’ve ever owned or driven. There’s something magical about this formula - just the right amount of understated classic styling, practicality, and of course a torquey v8 w/ a six speed. Perfection.
Makes me miss my e39m5 and want to pick up another one. Two months after I sold it to a friend, it was totaled. BMW stopped making engaging m5s, when it stopped making them NA and with 3 pedals, which is why I'm never selling my e28m5 or 6 speed e60m5.
I have the e39 525d. The m5 was always the dream, but I'm very happy and satisfied with mine. For a diesel engine, it's still a beautiful place to be driving in. Congratulations for the beautiful work, all of it. 👏
Awesome video on what probably is my favorite car. I was just a kid when this car went out of production, but my love for it was cemented when I first drove a base spec 525i E39. The E39's looks, driving experience, and feeling of solidity haven't been matched in my opinion. For me, the sweet spot is a 530i with the sport package and a manual. It has the sweet rack and pinion steering, and the car is just perfect in my mind.
I wanted for years that Magnus would do a video driving a bmw e30, please someone make it happen. 4cyl and 6cyl (because of the 911 similar sound and powerange)
Everytime I close my eyes to picture the perfect car .. this is what i dream of .. The only beemer that tingles at the right places and then some. Really great video man appreciate it.
my dad had a brand new m5 back in 99 and till this day its by far the best car, best quality of build and quality of materials i ever been in or felt. theres no way to explain it you just have to feel it for yourself... it is so solid you feel like nothing will ever break on it the chassis is so strong! the steering wheel and shifter feel and material feel is like no other when you shift into another gear it feels so perfect you have to drive a good condition of this car to see what the greatest car ever made was (sorry phaeton)
Have the E36 and E46 M3 and cars are awesome. No garage queens. I drive them often and maintain myself. Great joy to own and easy to work on. Nothing like a naturally aspirated inline 6 that goes up in value yearly. 😀
My mechanic (BMW expert) also said that the factory LSD loses a lot of its functionality pretty quickly. Mine felt fine, but it definitely didn't feel like a racing diff.
@@thomprd Can agree with that. I have an E39 M5 (2003) supercharged since 13 years. I have rebuild the LSD 2 times as it loses its functionality in that time (200.000km)
Such a fantastic car and stories! I LOVE the connections that come from this community and the unity around how good this car is! I’ve had mine since 2016 and hope to have it forever!
Well, Sabine said the e34 ring taxi drove more like a racecar than the others Of course the e39 has more power , torque, is more comfortable, or bmw would not have released it as an evolution of the previous model The feel of the car is a lot different. E34 is lighter, smaller, has to rev more, is better on twisties, fun at lower speeds. E39 bigger, heavier, more torque at lower revs, a train, and better on the open road, more fun at higher speeds. Both good, but twisties are e34/e30 territory
If I could have a brand new version any car released in my lifetime(49y/o), It would be an E39 BMW M5. I wouldn’t even have to think twice. It’s as perfect of a car one will ever find. It’s right at the tail end of great mechanical tech just before it got bogged down with electronic/computer tech for the most part. An absolutely gorgeous design without feeling it’s unnecessarily ostentatious. Perfect for a road trip. Perfect for track. Basically looks like an ordinary four-door sedan. But you can stomp the vast majority of cars which would pull up next to you at a light. Just absolute perfection.
@@arvmotiv Yeah, I don't believe the dude didn't knew the seller (surgeon) or had acquaintance in common. No way he got away with M5 for 22K USD in such good condition.
@Mr Calcium I know you meant M5 but I don’t understand how you think the E60 V10 is flashy. The E46 M3 S54 screams vs the M54 by comparison. And by styling all M cars are sporty and classy. The E39 M5 is still easily distinguishable from other E39.

@@djyems1021 Enthusiast Auto Group, look them up, they buy and sells bmw’s
Prices for these cars have risen sharply in recent years, as they have for E46 M3. That said, ANY E39 is a good car. The M5 is a good, fast car.
But your 530i and 540i Sport in particular make a great, enjoyable daily driver, but without M-car running costs. Definitely worth a look if the M5 is no longer within budget.
SHHHHHH. Dont give people ideas!!!!!!!!!
With a simple remap 0-100 km/h in 6 seconds is a tone of fun for the money
the 2.9l turbodiesel was amazing. got a tune on it to get 240hp and drove 500tkm with no problem
You say “inspires confidence”, and that’s an understatement…
I had a 2001 325xi wagon, and it was so stable in turns at speed that I shredded sidewalls on Nokians (twice). If a curve sign said 35mph, I knew I could do almost 70.
No complicated infotainment, no flash, analog gauges, no touch screens, no iDrive, a bump shift that actually worked, direct analog steering, a responsive slant six, and timeless styling…
I should’ve never have sold it.
It has everything you need in 2020, just a perfect car.
Get yourself either an E39 or manual Chevy SS and hold onto it. You'll never be able to replace it.
And a GXP G8 ?
@@vosedon 100%
I bought a Chevy SS new and it’s amazing. I may get a manual CT5-V blackwing next year.
There’s also the Pontiac gto with the 6 speed and 400 up v8 ..
Love the rich details about this machine! Thank you guys to bring this.
Best car I’ve owned hands down. Does everything for me. Always brings a smile to my face. This is my third. Owned it in carbon Schwartz, titanium silver and now jet black. I would love the alpine white though.
Awesome series! Can’t wait for the next episode!
Glad I just bought my e39 isnt a m5 but she’s still my baby
Same here!
Same here!
same! absolutely love the thing
Same!!! It’s in the shop right now but looking forward to have her back with no service light
This is a great show. As a long time Hagerty customer. I do love that you are bringing back to You Tube a great car channel reminiscent of the hay day of You Tube 6 years ago with car channels like /Drive and Motortrend.
Thank You. Please dont jump to greener pastures as the mention dead channels did. Super enjoyable.
I'm born in 1979 and i'm digging for this simple quiet strenght vehicles. Perfect video Thanks !
Absolutely correct that an enthusiast can have fun driving ANYTHING
Very true statement indeed.
My Brother and I build a wagon E39 M5 Alpine white, with all oem parts except for rear bumper and exhaust. We love it and plan to keep it in the stable for a long long time. Best decision we’ve ever made, huge fan of the older generation vehicles.
I remember when these came out; seemed like nothing could touch them! The proverbial valve-hammer!
Australian fan here. I have a 2002 E39 M5 (146000 kms) for weekends and a 2000 E39 528i Msport for daily use (230000kms), both Titanium Silver. I look after them meticulously and they are both an absolute pleasure to own, I'll never sell either of them.
Great video, makes me want an E39M5 even more than I already do.
Rented one this weekend and I’m happy to report that I’m happy I met one of my hero cars. Truly a golden era.
This channel is getting better and better
Fantastic to hear from Zukerman, such an interesting enthusiast
E39 M5 in alpine white with caramel interior 🔥 my favorite car I’ve ever owned or driven. There’s something magical about this formula - just the right amount of understated classic styling, practicality, and of course a torquey v8 w/ a six speed. Perfection.
The best BMW ever.
88 M3 or M2
So cinematic. The best review I've seen by far.
Having an e39 m5, getting to 400hp on the dyno is hard enough, 440hp is hard even with headers.. check out the garage queen vs driver m5 dyno tests.
394 HP (400 PS) is the spec on the CRANKSHAFT horsepower of the S62, not wheel horsepower.
@@pete540Z ya idk how 12 dipshits upvoted his comment
God, im getting closer and closer to selling my E46 M3 and using the money to get into an E39 M5. Always been a dream car for me. Thanks Magnus
My dream car. 😍 I've Wanted one since summer of 99.
... and How old are you now? You should that's 22 years ago now! What country are you from? Just go buy one!
I was going to say the same thing about the 530i. Possibly more fun and better steering than the M5 and a lot less expensive to buy and maintain.
This'll be a great series!!!
I have a 2003 silver E39 M5. It's got 204000 miles and I daily it. Runs like a champ. Amazing engine.
The best BMW ever!
One of the most beautiful designs from BMW, I want a regualar E39 5 series.
Every day I regret selling mine...every day! Looked identical to the silver one!
If there is a definition for perfect proportions, it's the E39 M5
Best Sport Sedan Ever with the 500E 🙌
So awesome to see another passionate enthusiast in front of the camera! Looking forward to watching more! CheeRS!
In a few years, manual NA V8 cars will become extraordinarily rare. Get in while you still can
Super happy to see this series with Magnus.
Mr. Walker has won the quarantine beard game.
Hahahaha!!!!
Absolutely nothing against the e39 m5, however the e46 m3 is truly fantastic. That’s the real classic of the semi mechanical bmws.
I dream to own one of these one day had a poster of an e39 on my wall for 10 years now
Magnus is legit! He needs his own show/channel.
"the next big thing" yes wow nobody knew how awesome this is until now!!! so affordable!!
my dad had a brand new m5 back in 99 and till this day its by far the best car, best quality of build and quality of materials i ever been in or felt. theres no way to explain it you just have to feel it for yourself... it is so solid you feel like nothing will ever break on it the chassis is so strong! the steering wheel and shifter feel and material feel is like no other when you shift into another gear it feels so perfect you have to drive a good condition of this car to see what the greatest car ever made was (sorry phaeton)
E39 it's the last solid and real BMW 5er.
Well sorted e60 m5 with a manual is also a very nice driving car. Different experience from a e39 m5 but still a very solid car.
Have the E36 and E46 M3 and cars are awesome. No garage queens. I drive them often and maintain myself. Great joy to own and easy to work on. Nothing like a naturally aspirated inline 6 that goes up in value yearly. 😀
The E39 M5 has LSD form factory...
LSD have varying locking ratios. Dinan makes an more aggressive LSD for the E39 M5 than the one that comes from the factory
@@drecherry9627 dinans diff also changes the gear ratios. 3.46 vs 3.15
My mechanic (BMW expert) also said that the factory LSD loses a lot of its functionality pretty quickly. Mine felt fine, but it definitely didn't feel like a racing diff.
My 1989 325i convertible has an LSD from factory as well lol
@@thomprd Can agree with that. I have an E39 M5 (2003) supercharged since 13 years. I have rebuild the LSD 2 times as it loses its functionality in that time (200.000km)
Such a fantastic car and stories! I LOVE the connections that come from this community and the unity around how good this car is! I’ve had mine since 2016 and hope to have it forever!
The E34 M5 is rarer, hand made, has a real detuned motorsports engine. IMO that's the one people should buy.
It’s ok to be wrong.
@@Barfly76 😁😂
Does it look as Handsome & was it Hooned by Clive Owen though?
It's okay to want an older and slower car.
Well, Sabine said the e34 ring taxi drove more like a racecar than the others
Of course the e39 has more power , torque, is more comfortable, or bmw would not have released it as an evolution of the previous model
The feel of the car is a lot different.
Great choice Hagerty! I love my E39 M5!
I’m really liking the choice of channels and presenters by Hagerty, keep up the great work.
Prices go up in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... 😉
they already did...
@@arvmotiv Yeah, I don't believe the dude didn't knew the seller (surgeon) or had acquaintance in common. No way he got away with M5 for 22K USD in such good condition.
I agree, you can’t buy an e39 M5 for $22k usd. I just bought a carbon black w/ black and blue inserts in mint condition out of SanJose for $45k.
@@rolflee6708 Congratz if true!
@@FVBmovies have 2 m5. Like this carbon black one the best
Captured the dynamics and spirit of that car perfectly.
The last real M5, change my mind
Thats a tough one.... That V10 though.... Its sweet in its own regards.
@Mr Calcium so you don’t think the E46 M3 is a real M car then???
@Mr Calcium I know you meant M5 but I don’t understand how you think the E60 V10 is flashy. The E46 M3 S54 screams vs the M54 by comparison. And by styling all M cars are sporty and classy. The E39 M5 is still easily distinguishable from other E39.
This car is just amazing. Its perfect. The suspension, the engine- its the perfect car. Drove it for 6 years and never found a car again that was so perfect.
Money comes and goes, buy the car you love because you love it not because the value gonna go up .
What do you mean by that exactly?
Huh? Very few cars appreciate in value
Just beautiful! Just enough of power, style and gives a proper involvement))
