fun fact: the reason the actors were so serious about it is becouse they never saw the monster before the movie's release, Jeff Morrow, the actor that played the protagonist in the story, had to say this about the experience: "The director, Fred Sears, just told us, 'All right, now you see the bird up there, and you're scared to death! Use your imagination.' But the first time we actually got to see it was the night of the premiere. The audience couldn't stop laughing. We were up on the screen looking like idiots, treating this silly buzzard like it was the scariest thing in the world. We felt cheated, that's for sure, but they told us afterward that they just ran out of money. They couldn't afford anything except this stupid puppet... I was never so embarrassed in my entire life."

Most 50's monster movies, as I recall, just end with not much fanfare. The monster dies, cue "The End".
I thought that the way they killed it was too complicated and ridiculous, in that it required tech way beyond the 50's ability. It has a force field, but also eats people. So just stick a bomb inside a dead cow and put a parachute on it. When the bird appears, push it out the plane's door. The bird eats it, and now it's inside the force field. The bomb explodes. Thanksgiving for days!

As silly as the puppet looks, the nostrils flailing is a nice touch

The two films that scared me the most was I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE and TARANTULA back in the 1950s. A real tarantula was used not a funny looking puppet.

If there was ever a need to remake a giant monster (and do it's design justice) this is one of them. Hell, once Legendary looses the rights to Godzilla, they could continue with this guy and others, like The Giant Mantis, Tarantula, and maybe the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Weird how Japan gets known for their giant monsters, while we here in America have quite the roster of our own.

I would like to point out the reason the actors take it so seriously is because non of them knew what the monster looked like it’s why like when they look at the pictures that were taken of it you never see them directly looking at it they had to pretend they could see it
