    I always find that people are obsessed with speed, saving time is an interesting concept. I can save 1 min here, 1 min there, but I can waste hour researching gear. My life is not hectic enough to warrant a new sd card reader. Looks like a nice product, would it change my life, nope, but maybe it would help another. Thanks for your honest 8 min review...now I have to rush to make up for the time I watched this video...lol. ;)

    Au contraire, there is such a thing as a "USB card." Back when laptop computers were much thicker than they are nowadays, they had a port for ExpressCards. So, for example, as such computers likely didn't have USB-3 ports, you could add a pair of USB-3 ports by buying a USB-3 ExpressCard, which you could reasonably refer to as a "USB card."

    The slow down in speed with card may be your C drive 100% usage issue.
    Many people claim windows is fault , I found at least Films and TV app tend to cause it more. Some sort of code conflict. My computer is chronic for SD card swapping times.

      I dont get the whole comparison except SD vs CF (A/B)
      If i use SD cards on a regular basis, i will have a fast one internally such as in my 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 (Pro…) going 250-270MB/s write and read, so mostly the card is the limiting factor especially for writing.
      I have a basic, small SD/micro SD combined card reader with short USB-C cable and even on my iPad its pretty much fast enough, as well when 2 cards are inserted.
      On the MacBook or any other fast USB C port the UHS II (Sony Tough) card is still in read speeds around 200-220MB/s, so barely slower than my internal card reader.
      In fact i LOVE this tiny reader… i have a affordable, „slow“ 512GB micro SD always inserted as backup on the go and use otherwise mainly a fast but „small“ 128GB UHS II SD card in the camera, rarely a 256GB micro SD via adapter from a GoPro.

    So, if you read the basics of the website.... Ejection pin for Mobile phone SIM cards/removal of camera plates.
    As for the "No sign of which way to insert"? The card will only go in one way. There's being critical for actual issues and then there's being critical just for the sake of it.
    Theres now a 3.2 for speed...
    If you have been out shooting, you can literally minimise one of the things that carry up valuable space in a backpack.

    Hi Casey, Apologies if I missed it, but have you tried a powered USB port hub? Significantly helps as it provides dedicated power to all your SSD, SD card, USB A/C connections, rather than them having to rely on the limited electric current from your PC's USB/C ports. There is no comparison when transferring large MP4 or RAW files from cards to hard drives. 👍

  • @londenard
    @londenard 7 месяцев назад

    I think some of the bottleneck is your computer. I also tried this one and found it to be cumbersome as well and exchanged it for another, smaller unit. I would post a link to the one I have but I don't think it'll show up. I've found that for $100 I can buy a couple smaller, more focused card carriers and more SD cards. I almost never have a need to transfer files out in the field. When/ if I do, my laptop has a built in card reader so... If I did all or most of my editing on an iPad, this might come in handy but other than that, I'm not sure what's the point in carrying a card reader everywhere you go?

    Given the speeds you described, the speed bumps are likely from reaching just above the limit of sustained write speed of your SSD.
    Most SSDs have an internal cache made of much faster storage in order to operate quicker in typical scenario, which is flushed to the main storage cells. That one can be pretty slow on some models, like 150MB/s.

    • @dunnymonster
      @dunnymonster 7 месяцев назад

      @@donaldobrien9171I've got an older 500GB version of the WD My Passport which has the SD card slot built into the drive chassis. You simply pop the card in and press the transfer button and it copy's the entire SD card to the drive. You can then wirelessly view the drive contents using the App on your phone or just plug it into your computer via USB just like any external HDD to access the images later. The newer version likely has a SSD so it's probably a lot faster, mine has a spinning HDD in it and takes a long time to transfer from SD to HDD if you are moving a lot of images. Still, it's a good back up solution and has it's own internal lithium battery so no cables required.

    It looks like they sent you a prototype. They could send me one, but it would cost them $100 U. S. to do so. It's a good concept, bad implementation. It needs more card styles for reading and also at least 1T of memory. Also a standard USB plug, not a cord. They could include a cord as an extra that would fit in a pocket. A can of air freshener should be included. I like that they have card holders built in. It should have a snap type lid to hold the cards in place. Also, the cover needs to be able to be taken off. Not a bad first try, now let's get serious with the commercial version.

    these tests will eventually show that nothing matters except for one thing, how fast your actual sdcard is. sdcards, memory cards are something like uhs ii is on the order of 100-200 mbps, while a simple cheap $2 usb card reader will be able to reach close to the usb speed which is about 10gbps. Nothing matters! It's all the card. Everything else is so much faster than the card that it doesn't matter. The ultra pro kodak 256gb ($169 for that card) still only reads 300mb/s at spec and less in real life.
    that pgytech reader has as much functionally as a 1 inch card reader that costs $2. Good grief.
    I too did a lot of these tests and eventually started to read the specs because I didn't understand why nothing seemed to matter all the read speeds were the same no matter what dongle I used.
