Tony changed my whole musical life, taste, and what it means to play music. Totally and completely enlightened me, personally and musically. RIP to the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, Tony Rice.
Yeah I just discovered him about a week ago. I watched Randy's channel called "the house that never sleeps "and he had play a playlist of songs and techniques and he always was talking about Tony Rice all the time Tony Rice and I never heard of him.. but man once I looked them up man that guy can really play and pick what a flat picker, and more importantly what a songwriter and just the whole thing man I mean he musta influenced more people than I could imagine.. In 1975, a good friend Gary Mehalick convinced me to go to a BG festival in New Hampshire. We arrived in time to walk up to 10' from center stage and out comes JD Crowe & the New South, my first time seeing a live BG band. With Tony on Guitar, I was hooked on a lifetime journey of Bluegrass festivals and many thousands of hours playing music. Some years down the road we swapped our Herringbones with each other & played a few tunes together, a thrill of a lifetime. Truly one of my two favorite musical heroes of all time, with Doc being the other. Thank you Tony for the years of amazement at your creativity and joy in hearing your choice of notes. Rest in Peace, good man.
I was at this Festival that my dad put on.It was in Epsom N.H. It was also the last U.S. performance before Skaggs,Rice, and Douglas went their own ways.I had supper with all of them and had a verbal invite by Tony to go to Woodstock Vt. and play with him.I never followed up on the invite.Been kicking myself since. The whole festival was recorded on reel to reel.I ended up with a 30 min. segment of them playing.Best bluegrass ive ever heard. Will miss you Mr. Rice. You are the Supreme Bluegrass Guitar God.R.I.P.
@@BrucePom54 Bruce, that was indeed the festival, I have some photos of them on the stage. What a band. As a side note to the festival, if you remember Bobby Tidwell, he was looking for a guitar & he & Gary liked each other's sound & Still River was started. Rod Roach on Banjo, I can't recall the bass player's name. I think this was Bobby's last band before passing.
Thanks so much for such a delight, thanks to have offered this concert to everyone for the pleasure of our souls and ears.... A Frenchie Bluegrass lover
There are many great guitar players but Tony raised the bar far above. How I miss this amazing talent on the guitar. Video is a wonderful thing. Thanks for sharing your extraordinary talent!! RIP❤
Theres a picture of me, my brothers and Tony Rice. And Tony is laughing so hard at me trying to dive in the photo at the last second so I could be in the picture with him. Those were good times. RIP 🙏
This is Tony in his prime. I'm 75 and have spent a lifetime looking for the best musicians on each instrument I play, or in some cases, want to play. Tony is the best guitarist ever and my favorite musician, period. I had the good fortune to meet him at a show once and it remains one of the shining moments in a life filled with shining moments. Love you Tony. Gene
So did I, one of many who got the chance to meet this unbelievably talented man. It’s still so sad he isn’t still with us. But thankfully we have so many performances on film and on RUclips to remember and enjoy his efforts to please all of his fans.!
This is Tony in his absolute prime, both in voice and playing. A gem of a recording, including some of his best songs. His singing is sometimes overlooked because of his enormous guitar playing. But he had a beautiful, understated sing style. Not note-bending flashy like his guitar work, but very effective, great tone, and interesting interpretations of Lightfoot and others. Thanks for posting. This is about as good a recording of Rice as I've seen on RUclips.
My first Strawberry. I was amazed by ALL the performers then and for all the years since. After this show I caught Tony Rice anytime his groups were playing within 100 miles.

I’ve seen a lot of Tony Rice videos, listened to a lot of Tony Rice music, and I don’t know if he was ever better at any point in his career then he was on this night. That is the most amazing guitar picking I believe I have ever heard. And from a class act.

Yeah I just discovered Tony Rice via Randy shartiger' channel call" the house that never sleeps" and he was talking about Tony Rice for a bunch of times and so I looked him up what a legend he must have influenced more people and the cat could really flat pick and more importantly just sing and write songs and just the whole thing about it all unbelievable..
Ladies and gents, this is the top of heap, the cream of the crop. It just dont get no better than this!! R.I.P. forever Tony. I hope i"ll see you someday!
Many years ago I strummed his guitar while it sat open in its case. Tony standing across the room with Wyatt sucking down a beer, stared at me like I just violated a religious shrine, LOL. I was a kid and didn't know any better. But now I'm glad I have that experience to remember.
I grew up in Crystal River Fl back in the 70's with Tony's little brother Wyatt (on Tony's left). We had an awful lot of fun when Tony came home for a visit!!! That whole family was extremely talented and when they got together to play music it was like heaven on earth!!! Saw Wyatt and Larry in Hickory NC around 1991 what a great family... Sorry we've lost a great picker!!! Always knew when Tony was in town cause you'd see him with a cigarette in his mouth and a fishing pole in his hand... Enjoy heaven Mr Rice, catch a big one for me ;-)
Thanks for posting your memories of the brilliant Tony Rice. I'm trying to imagine what it's like being able to say you are from a place called Crystal River; that surely gives you ahead start right away.
I had the honor of playing music for a short time with this iconic talent "way back" in the late 1970's. Mr. Rice is a remarkable musician and truly one of a kind. Like Earl Scruggs, the banjo player who many people try to copy, no one on this planet can play like Tony Rice although multitudes have tried. This video recording of their performance exhibits his talents at the pinnacle of his abilities and is a stunning example of flatpicking guitar taken to a level that was unheard of a few years earlier. I've listened to many recordings of Mr. Rice's and in this one he and his group are really on fire.
Tony's hands are super hot in this show. On his worst night he's still gonna be Tony Rice and you'd never know he's off because he'd choose safer licks, but he's landing everything here and he really reaches for some fuckin crazy shit. We all have those night when you land stuff you would only try when noodling around at home, but when Tony has one of those nights OMFG. Forget flatpicking, this is a time-capsule guitar performance for the ages. You see him giggle a few times when he lands his nastiest stuff and I almost cry every time. What an American treasure he was and always will be.
I was working for Guitar Player Magazine in the late 70s and one of the editors was always able to get us backstage at the Great American Music Hall in SF. Had to honor of meeting Stephane Grappelli when he played with David Grisman with Tony of course. I once asked about the chord changes to "Swing 51" and he actually sat down and wrote out the chart for me. I still have that somewhere,
I spent a good chunk of the day yesterday playing Tony tunes with my best bud. Just got the news. This man has brought so much joy to so many, and so many WTF moments for those of us that are lucky enough to steal a lick or two and feel the magic in our own hands. He lives on!
I feel the same way. He changed my life, and now im playing in a band and trying to learn as many of Tony’s licks. U explained it perfectly about being able to experience the magic in your own hands. 💔
I remember waking up to a hard frost on my tent and car the first night. Someone camping nearby had brewed some coffee and shared it with me. Kindest thing ever. God, I miss those days!
A voice mixing the light lovely qualities of James Taylor and the Outlaw Country influence of Willie Nelson and the picking talent of.....Well Tony Rice. One a kind.
I never realized how well Wyatt can pick. I had always considered him just an amazing Rhythm guitarist. Especially just listening to recordings. RUclips has enabled me to watch these concerts that I was either too young to go to or wasn't even born yet to see and now I see that Wyatt is actually an extraordinary picker. But then again he should be having the greatest guitar player of all time as his brother.
Great show. I was at Strawberry in the early to mid 90s. The feature attractions that day were Doc Watson and David Grisman. The only thing I remember about it is that Grisman was talking in between songs and somebody up front yelled, "shut the f@#$ up and boogie!" So Grisman shoots right back, "YOU shut the f@#$ up and boogie!"
Wow . . Just discovered this. What A Set . . ! Back in those days I was always working Strawberry weekends. But I did see Tony many times at the CBA Festival in Grass Valley. The Sound is Outstanding ! Many Thanks For Sharing This !
I also saw Tony at the 1st Strawberry Bluegrass Festival at Leland Meadows in Strawberry. His workshop there was the most important lesson on Tuning and Tempo that I've ever received and energized me to restart my performing career. Tony Rice Presente! Thank you.
GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SEE AND HEAR THIS FOR AN HOUR OR MORE!! EVEN GREATER STILL TO SEE A COMPLETE LIST OF THE TUNES AND TIMES!! WHO WERE THE BAND MEMBERS HERE/?? THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND... THE STRAWBERRY FEST ---GOOD TIMES!
Pretty cool to know that as of the very recent interview Tony did with Jan Johansson, he has seen this and is super excited this is "out there" and very very proud of it and considers it among the very best of his work.
0:38 Little Sadie 3:25 Gold Rush 6:12 Carolina Star 9:25 More Pretty Girls Than One 12:32 Song for a Winter's Night 15:35 Nine Pound Hammer 19:20 Early Morning Rain 22:19 Likes of Me 25:16 John Hardy 30:32 Fare Thee Well 34:16 Wayfaring Stranger 39:43 Original Untitled 45:11 Cold on the Shoulder 48:01 Blue Railroad Train 51:39 Me and My Guitar 1:00:07 Old Train (encore)
Tony Rice changed my life. I never could sing the high lonesome sound like the Osborne brothers or Bill Monroe but I could get close to Tony's singing and from then on I was wide open Bluegrass. He is and was the best and will never be replaced. This video gets me emotional for the 80's.
This should be out as a Special Edition CD from Rounder to support the ARTIST who gave them many good sales for so many years!!! RIP TONY...YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!
Brings back very fond memories of me growing up in 80’s listening to The Unit with my Dad! Thanks for posting!..And they’ll never be another Tony Rice!
I've been part of and seen so many gold rush's...usually people get excited and make noise....the true testament to Tony, and his playing is that everyone shut up when it kicked off...I love that. They have heard it so many times, but they all wanted to know what he had to say this night.
Tony Rice was the most stellar and masterful bluegrass guitarist/vocalists ever!!! I wished I'd gone to one of his concerts...Well, I'm sure thankful to get to hear brilliant recordings, such as this one!🕊
There is a show on sugar Meg's somewhere I found years ago from 85 or 86, right before his voice started to get hoarse, he was 1000% on point. His playing and singing was particularly next level. I'll have to see if I can find it
I've been to 47 Strawberry Music festivals, and although I wasn't at this one, I saw Tony Rice several times, and I have many friends sitting in that audience. RIP, Tony.
Was first introduced to BlueGrass back in the early 70's at the Union Grove fiddlers convention.... then I discovered Doc Watson and the flat picked style I so love....then there was Tony Rice...I have been blessed to have been alive while the two best flat pickers who ever lived were on this planet. God Speed Tony.
I know I'm pretty much known as someone that loves heavy metal, and that is true, I will stand up for the music I love. That's why I will also stand up and say I love what this man has done, the music he has given us. Great music is great music, and Tony Rice really put out some great music. He is going to be sorely missed by me and sooo many others. Goodbye Tony, and thanks for such a prolific catalogue of music, so much so we could never come close to getting tired of.
I can't believe the youtube algo just brought this up now ! A gem of all time, many, many thanks for posting this !! All the very best to Mrs T. Rice and the family from Canada, cannot imagine life without him and his music. He meant so much to me over most of my life. Can't pick up my old D-18 without thinking about him and playing so many wonderful lines he brought us. The fretboard was never the same after his genius and inventive mind, not to mention the vast group of fabulous musicians be introduced to the world. Thank you Tony Rice for setting the bar so high.

Thanks for this great production. Fantastic to see Tony perform ❤
Best I have ever seen him play ever
Entirely agree. Tony is always amazing even on a "bad day" but this is THE best I have ever seen...ever...he was on fire.
He's ripping on this one
@@PaulCaruso53 I agree he is flawless here
I also saw Tony at the 1st Strawberry Bluegrass Festival at Leland Meadows in Strawberry.
Thanks for all the music. RIP Tony
RIP, Tony
Tony was impeccable - phrasing, technique, rhythm, taste, timing, vocally, the look. This was a fantastic show, he is sorely missed. RIP

Sonora Dale thank you so much for the upload! It is amazing!
@@sonoradale1491 Good job, copying Josh's work to your Description, thanks. Uploaders, take note!!
Tony Rice changed my life. I never could sing the high lonesome sound like the Osborne brothers or Bill Monroe but I could get close to Tony's singing and from then on I was wide open Bluegrass. He is and was the best and will never be replaced. This video gets me emotional for the 80's.
The energy in this performance cannot be put into words,. Unbelievable!!!
Jimmy Gaudreau is from my current home town Carolina RI.
@@Deadtuna3 I have talked to Jimmy. He seemed like a really nice person.
This should be out as a Special Edition CD from Rounder to support the ARTIST who gave them many good sales for so many years!!! RIP TONY...YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!
I was there -- digging every single note of the Tony Rice Unit (and his band)
Brings back very fond memories of me growing up in 80’s listening to The Unit with my Dad! Thanks for posting!..And they’ll never be another Tony Rice!
The G.O.A.T.
FAN ... tastic!!! I'm especially gratified to see so much attention given this -- I feel better about this poor old world now, thank you so much!
What a show of talent from all of them!! Bluegrass isw in a tier of its own
Tony was simply the best. Guitars never sounded the same to me once I heard Tony Rice play.
Love you miss you Tony! Thank God for RUclips we can watch you everyday!
Tony we miss you so much
Rest easy Mr Rice thank you for leaving musical gifts like this behind for the rest of us
RIP, Tony and thanks for all of your amazing performances over the years
I've been part of and seen so many gold rush's...usually people get excited and make noise....the true testament to Tony, and his playing is that everyone shut up when it kicked off...I love that.
Best flat picker ever. Maybe the most amazing thing is how effortless he always made it seem.
I think this was Tony in his absolute prime.
There is a show on sugar Meg's somewhere I found years ago from 85 or 86, right before his voice started to get hoarse, he was 1000% on point. His playing and singing was particularly next level. I'll have to see if I can find it
Literally the best show I've heard!
Thanks for the upload awesome show
I've been to 47 Strawberry Music festivals, and although I wasn't at this one, I saw Tony Rice several times, and I have many friends sitting in that audience.
The sound on this recording is jaw dropping for the time.
Now I'm gonna get on a drunk. I had NO idea Tony was gone until just now. I am sad! 12/26/2020.
He passed Christmas Morning while making his morning coffe. 😢
@@blue4948 heart attack I presume.
😢😢
@Terry Eugene His music will forever live on.
Goodbye great Tony RIP
THIS Wayfaring Stranger my favorite ...have to go back again and again 🧡
Man, this made my work seem not so bad for one hour and three minutes
wow, Wow, WOW!!!!!🔥
There will never be anyone as cool as Tony, or as great.
Tony's guitar mastery is a given, but he's a great Bluegrass singer too.
