I find this every so often and I think I comment on it every time. Two chords, 9 minutes and not one second of boredom. I am an old deadhead, and I loved that band, but, to me this is the most perfect rendition of this old song I have ever heard.
I absolutely love this rendition of the song and I thank Mr. Huggett for posting it! Tony Rice and Peter Rowan are amazing, of course, but Bryn Davies on the bass and Sharon Gilchrist on the mandolin should also have their names in the video title or at least in the description. It wouldn't be the same without them.
Bryn Davies is a fantastic bassist, and I'm from the land of NHØP..Love the way she moves the bass around, to back whomever is soloing.. In fact, what a stellar lineup..
Bryn Davies is a scary amazing musician. Had the opportunity to attend a bluegrass camp where she was an instructor. She demoed a bass solo for her pod of students and it shut down conversation 50 yards in every direction (classes were outside). It was amazing. I could not believe what I was hearing.
Bryn is a Welsh lads name but it suits her well. Lovely bass style and great vocal harmonies, spot-on. The Mando player is so good too, love the modal folksy playing. Tony Rice we all know how great he is, geniuses all of them.
Shame Sharon got no love for that understated but full of feeling solo right out of the gate that was just pure music and masterful picking bringing the song alive within an otherworldly dreamy pocket . Stunning version, wow.
I first heard this song listening to the Grateful Dead. This is quite possibly the best version I've ever heard. His voice is almost ghostlike. Simply fantastic!
I was at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio the evening Tony Rice's tour manager said he couldn't sing anymore. He tried that evening but within seconds of trying to sing he realized his voice was too hoarse and he did what he knew best was play his guitar. Lot of tears in the crowd who came to hear him sing.
Bryn Davies always dances with the bass. Fantastic musician she is.. Sharon Gilchrist is also great. Real people, playing real music, no autotune and sheit...
I think this song has been refined to where it belongs in the record books as one of the best performances by all Artist's Base Player, Kicked it, to the singers, band and the instruments. Whew!!!! Well done.
A close friend of mine worked several of those fests. I can only imagine. Tony and Peter are stellar but don't forget Sharon Gilchrist on the Mando. That bass player tooo... they all rock
Great song! I was blessed to get to Play Bass and sing for Peter on 3 different gigs several years ago. I had to learn this background harmony part, I didnt know it was a female "Bryn" covering it. I am male so I had to use falsetto. Peter is such a Kind and Wonderful Man.I will treasure my memories gigging with him.
I watch it from my Tennessee porch quite often...perhaps daily with my favorite moonshine...no neighbors to judge me...like I'd give a damn anyway (× _×)
Besides being on stage with two very beautiful and exceptionally talented women I don't understand why Peter Rowland and Tony Rice two of the best pickers in the world didn't get the fame and acclaim they deserved.
No matter how many times I listen to this recording I am still mesmerized!!!! ...And can never get enough of Bryn and Sharon after all of these years! ..Oh and of course Mr Rowen and Mr. Rice!!!
This is the standardized speed of the song, the double-time that the Dead popularized was faster paced and fit their structure better, since then, a lot of people have followed the double time suit thinking it's normal, But the slow, melancholy mood of the song is how it should song. It's truly beautiful. Both versions are :)
Really awesome. Amazing that Peter Rowan can hit those high vocal notes and the harmonizing sounds great. The two women are solid musicians and the eye candy aspect certainly doesn't detract from the overall group appeal. I played the Spirit of Suwannee festival a time or two with the Cypress Creek Band back in the early '80s. It was always great fun. I remember the Front Porch String Band putting in some solid sets there. John
R.I.P. Tony. You and Peter are American treasures. Sharon & Bryn my goodness, what can I say... God I love the Dead, but your words are hauntingly cathartic coming from you, sir.
Classical Murder Ballad, A Mans Torment from his Cheating Wife. The Angel sings & dances with her Bass as she plays it Perfectly. This song must be 100 years old or more.
This is definitely the best version of this song ever. I'm not being biased because Tony is my cousin, it really is the best I've heard. Peter's voice makes it hypnotizing and brings a fresh breath to the song. The visual artistry provides even more life to it. I can listen to it over and over.
Portland Oregon River CIty Bluegrass Festival. This group played and absolutely blew this old Deahead's mind. It just doesn't get any better than this. Never to be forgotten. What a festival.
I love this jank so much. And as much as i love Tony and Peter, Bryn and Sharon absolutely kill it, too. Especially Bryn. I love it when she comes in on the background vocals. And that bass solo and when she backs up Tony during his solo. And gosh darn they're both sexy the way they kill it on their instruments! Lol
when you say arraignment, do you really mean arrangement? Arraignment is when they bring in a suspect to be formally charged before a judge. How do you plead?
This was a fantastic gathering...musicians like this made it a perfect experience! The musicianship of each person on stage is legendary...hard to find anything better. Thanks for sharing this and bringing back memories of such a wonderful time!!
Check out how Tony is watching Bryn closely. Then when he plays his lead I swear he's doing much (if not exactly) what she played. Whew! We'll miss you Tony!
The weekend this took place the field was a huge pond from the big rain and forced all the bands inside this little music hall. I was in the front row for this, and in the last row for the next act :)

Absolutely mesmerizing,, who’s listening in 2024 ❤

Performance transcends genres, regardless of what you like if you can't recognise this for genius there's something wrong with your ears.
totally agree !
many versions don’t use the minor chord, i prefer this to any i’ve heard.
Agree
me too!
I’m case you’re wondering: you’ve found it. The real stuff.
Haa, indeed, hear hear

This bass player, Bryn Davies, is exceptional!

Thanks. I wanted to find their names and your post nailed it. They deserve props.

Fantastic! What a performance!
Bryn Davies on bass and
Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin

Bryn Davies is a fantastic bassist, and I'm from the land of NHØP..Love the way she moves the bass around, to back whomever is soloing..

❤ right!!
The moment when Bryn Davies picks up her bass and moves herself closer to Tony to better support his solo is some absolute musicianship magic!
Rest in peace Tony Rice. Saw him 1978 Grandfather Mountain Highlands Games
this probably has to be one of the, if not the greatest cold rain and snows ever
Oh yes! So magical and intimate! This gives me thrills and chills and goosebumps!
Kinda like when Trump sidled up behind Clinton in that debate. Camera angle? Dunno. She's a sick bass player, no doubt,
The bass solo alone is worth the price of admission..Wonderful rendition of this old murder ballad.
Mandolin: Sharon Gilchrist
Stand Up Bass: Bryn Davies
I fell in love with Bryn immediately.
Bryn is also a nuclear scientist - her day gig. See Wiki
Bryn is a Welsh lads name but it suits her well. Lovely bass style and great vocal harmonies, spot-on. The Mando player is so good too, love the modal folksy playing. Tony Rice we all know how great he is, geniuses all of them.
O.M.G. This is so Bad Ass I Luv it!!!! Every one of these players are just so good at what they do! First time hearin it like that folks!!! Thanx!
Shame Sharon got no love for that understated but full of feeling solo right out of the gate that was just pure music and masterful picking bringing the song alive within an otherworldly dreamy pocket . Stunning version, wow.

whole performance indeed like from a spirit realm
Tony Rice, a living legend. Gone but not forgotten.
Such finesse and subtlety in his playing. I think Molly Tuttle channels him now and again.
Saddest Christmas ever 😪

Tony Rice Sunday morning Workshop for $400, Alex
This is the way this song is supposed to be performed. Bluegrass purist Peter Rowan gets it!
You should check out 'bluegrass purist' Peter Rowan back in the 60s when he had a band called Earth Opera.
The bass player, what an absolutely sexy performance.
Bryn Davies always dances with the bass.

Bryn dancing' with that bass. I could watch that all day.
She always does..
I fall in love with Bryn's bass playing every time I watch this video. Lord have mercy that woman can make a bass do anything she wants.
Peter love all the music you’ve done
This is by far the best version ever done of this song IMHO.
Well, I said IMHO. Do you not know what that means?
It's reasonable to ask whether your opinion is informed by familiarity with these other versions.
densely *insert major eye roll here*
densely I apologize if I've offended you touchy people by expressing my opinion.
It makes me happy that I can find so much great music to listen to. Life is too short to even judge which of it is best, let alone argue about it.
This particular version never fails to send shivers up my spine. What a song, what a band, what a rendition!
Best Bluegrass bass solo ever
I've heard even better, also played by Bryn Davies.
She is an amazing bassist!

Sensual. Best version out there!
This is it - the definitive version.
Indeed.
He's got the perfect voice and delivery for this song, and his mandolin intro is just astonishing.
pure musicianship at its finest. Awesome version of this song.
