  • After four years of working behind a desk, she started to get that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of her stomach, the kind you get when you know you're not supposed to be where you are. She wondered, "Is this what I'm going to do for the rest of my life?" On her journey to answer one of life's biggest questions, she comes across a red ball, and from then on her life was never the same.
    Predisposed with a set of cultural, religious and societal expectations, having the 'balls' to challenge these expectations has been Dianna David's triumph over the past decade. Being inspired by the art of play opened up the doors to seeing infinite possibilities of a life she has always desired to live. As a Transformational Entertainer, Motivational Speaker, facilitator for empowerment workshops, kid whisper, humanitarian, freestyle dancer, and human being, she travels the world inspiring people of all ages to live a life of passion and purpose.

    I worked in the Information Technology industry for over 30 years. I managed people traveled to other countries and made good money. One day I walked into work and said out of the blue "this is my last day." They pleaded for me to stay or at least give 2 weeks notice but I knew that morning I was driving to work that it was my last day. So now I have a small farm and raise some crops and lots of chickens. I wake up when I wake up and do the work I want. It took lots of years and balls to just one day say this isn't what makes me tick. I am not sure this farm is what it is either but I sure am happier.

      Roger Leo I hope your chickens and crops are happy too, show them that you are the person who quit the job to give those animals a nice life.
      My grandmother had a farm too, she loved every second of it, every morning she looked for eggs and her animals, she don't even needed a alarm ;), i was happy everytime i spend time at her farm, everything looked so peaceful, working with nature is beautiful. We need more people like u. Thanks for having the guts quiting your job and do the thing you like to do.
      (I apologize for my english not my native language)

      How is the farming thing going? Do you have a gardening background or something?

      Roger Leo This is a great lesson! "I am not sure this farm is what it (makes me tick) is either but I sure am happier." I've always had the fear of not doing what I originally was supposed to do and thus stayed where I am, unhappy. Doing something better is way better than staying where we are, even if we are not sure!

      Roger Leo That's laudable. But would you have been able to have bought the farm (literally, not figuratively) and quit if you hadn't put that time in? I'm assuming you had savings - some kind of financial means to get to where you are, even if modest. It's great to retire from work to do something you prefer, but for people starting out, who have nothing - or who have debts - it's not possible to just decide to leave a job and live off the land. That's homelessness.

    I totally get this! I picked up my guitar 6 years ago and listened to all those naysayers. It's too hard to learn, you will quit after a couple of weeks, you will never be a star! etc. I didn't listen to any of this bullshit. I took lessons and persevered my passion of music and guitar with a vengeance. I am in my very first rock n' roll band at the ripe young age of 50. I am living MY dream and having so much fun playing with others and learning along the way. Never say never. Never give up on your dream. I will be playing until I can't anymore. I just have to look at my guitar and feel the pure bliss that it gives me.

    I know this sounds weird, but its nice to hear from an Asian in entertainment. You don't get to hear enough advice from others in the same field that understand the monumental cultural expectations that go behind living to the moment your parents approve of your life.

But when we let the Clown inside of us free...we're in fact Frickin' Multi-Talented, Caring, Reliable, Innovative, Loveable, Creative and so much FUN to Be with.....OH YOU WAIT....This is just the beginning of all those Left Brained 'Asian' who are freeing themselves to the RIGHT side to deliver F.U.N = Freedom Unleashed NOW - in this world...........We're coming....

    My co-worker and I had a running bet. We both hated our jobs and each put up $500 to the first one to quit.
    I still text him every now and then and ask how the old job is treating him, same as always he would reply.
    I think every year that you don't follow your passion, the thicker the career skin grows. Every year this skin grows thicker and thicker, encapsulating all your hopes, dreams and ambitions. Until one year, you just give in. You accept your position in the world and throw in the towel, you are an (_____) and that is what you will be until you retire. "Well, at least I'll have my retirement years, that will be fun."
    I hate to tell people to quit their job to follow their passions, but quit your jobs and follow your passions! The more people who do, the more people will get the needed encouragement to do the same. It's not about luck, it's about breaking through the fear. I have fear everyday, I don't know if my new business venture will work out, but at least I'm going to give it a shot. I'd be more disappointed if I didn't try at all vs failing.
    I listened to an audiobook "30 Lessons for Living" a few weeks before I quit. You need to read it. This guy interviewed 100s of elderly people and asked them what they would do differently. One of the questions was about a career change. "Spending 2000 hours a year at a job you hate is a waste of life," is how one of them replied. The consensus of most was to just find something else, anything else. Don't live in misery.

      Jason Ray AMEN Jason....We are kept in our FEAR that success looks only 1 way. We are the definition of our own success...Do you feel successful? Is success a milestone or is a forever attitude that we must remind ourselves every day. Life is about LIVING it...not waiting until you retire to be old enough to hopefully remember what you did.....Don't Wait any Longer to BE YOU!

    My mother has pictures of me when I was 5, dressing up and performing skits that I wrote. I grew up wanting to be an actor and a writer. 3 years of college to get my theatre degree, I was plagued with the idea of conformity. All my friends were getting married having babies and working different kinds of 9 to 5 jobs. I began to feel very worthless and soon depression kicked in. I thought that this is what I need to do to be successful. This shows me that all I need to do is believe in myself and keep going no matter what anybody tells me. I graduate next semester and I plan on going to a professional voice over workshop. I don't plan on stopping.

      NEVER STOP! Even my friends are laughin at me cause they think i can't get a art-job as concept-artist/illustrator, i practice/study drawing everyday 4-8 hours by myself (they don't even know, and ask me why i don't want to party everytime with them). I go trough this just to complete my dream. People who think you don't have a job and doing nothing expect your "Hobby", those people will never find theyr own passion. It's hard WORK for yourself cause you need to navigate, expirienced yourself and find yourself as a person, that's the hard work for a human to not let yourself down, never stop with you passion, in the future you will reach your goal. I apologize for my bad english, it's not my native language

      IZanagi Iza: Yes! It is HARD work to stick to what you believe in. The rest of the world is the biggest distraction away from getting to Know YOU! I am proud of your determination to stick to what you love and what you believe in...It is the work-effort that you invest in yourself that will leave you with an elevated Self-Esteem that will result in the feelings you will call HAPPINESS at the end of the day. Some people 'work' in jobs that will NEVER give them that feeling of HAPPINESS...well...simply because they have never committed themselves to finding out what they truly want and desire....STICK TO IT!!!

    I'm an artist and my parents (just like every other spazzed out person) would spout things like, "Art will never give you money." or, "No, be a doctor... at least that will support your family." In the end, all of that changes when you dream. Keep dreaming... because in your dreams, it reaches to the impossible without the impossible.

Eastern Russians and Indians (from India) are geographically Asian, but they are not genetically Oriental. Referring to the ethnicity as "Oriental" is far more descriptive and accurate.

      You're not supposed to follow your dreams, you're supposed to do the right thing. Nobody dreams of cleaning toilets, harvesting potatoes or caring for a family member with terminal cancer. The people who hid Jews in their basements during WW2 didn't do it because they had always dreamed of emptying poop buckets and living in constant fear of being sent to a concentration camp. If everyone followed their dreams we'd be starving and sitting in our own feces within a week.

    • @diannadavid4248
      @diannadavid4248 6 лет назад +9

      everyone's dreams look different and cleaning potatoes is actually quite meditative in comparison to shooting bodies. it's all relative. It's all about how you perceive it, appreciate it, and go for something you don't have and make it happen. That's what it means to be alive and follow your dream...or you'd rather be alive and dying inside....its your choice.

My major is fashion design with a contraction in entrepreneurship and international business. I want to have my own fashion company for celebrating real diverse beauty and a couple boutiques. I don't care how crazy it seems to leave to a top school for a degree in something risky. I am designer and an artist. Watching this helped me know I'm right and everyone else is wrong.

    It such a dichotomy as to how in essence we insult anybody who has a 9-5 job. "I hated the job , is this all Im going to do with my life", they say. As a motivational speaker there must be a better way than to put down way more than half of the world. I am "following my dreams" so to speak, so I don't have a conventional job, but try to stay away from such forms of contempt to that type of work.

    I am stuck at my job as a real estate agents for 5 years now.. Started to hate it on my 4th year.. Money pays when it does but i no longer have a passion for it.. I did it for the money (big mistake).. So i put it aside (not quit) n started uploading game trailer on youtube.. Happiest i been in a long time. I took jim carrey speech bout doing we love for a chance and never regret it.. Though im not earning enough yet to quit my job i hoped one day i can.. Life's too short to be cartering other people.. But just google it for your area and see if you qualify for anything. From what I have seen grants tend to work with businesses better than individuals but I think it's possible to create a business around a single individual. Hope that helps at least a bit Mr. Lawrence.

    Oh boy. Reading the youtube comments again...what a mistake.
    Alright, look: Yes, not everyone can do what she did, and most people live a much harsher life.. However, while venting by posting that stuff here is understandable to myself, I feel as though many of you are simply using your past as an excuse.
    Success in doing what you love is almost never easy; there are a few exceptions, but for the most part it's a lot of hard work. Until you've done that, perhaps you should stop blaming your circumstances. YES, AGAIN, they are a huge factor, but not something you can't overcome...probably. Again, there are exceptions, but if you're reading youtube comments, then you have the internet, and the internet is almost literally infinite possibilities.

      I think I just realized that those types of people once thought it wouldn't hurt them so much to pursue your dreams. Then they got scathed and reverted to the default advice of 'put up with a mediocre/harsh life and deal with it'. Whereas wonderful people such as the Ted presenter took severe punishment to be able to provide for herself by doing what she loves.

    What about if you have a passion but dont know how to live off it? I am about to finish uni, but I dont want to work in what my degree is in. My passion in life has always been music, every day I cant stop creating new music, since I was about 16 I have come up with so much, I would love to share it or for it to be used somewhere. I know music is the thing in life for me. I want to be independant living away from home though, but I dont know how/when I will be able to use my passion. I feel I would have to get into the job-mindframe a little bit, so I can live away from home. I just dont know how I can use what I can do practically, I have tried starting bands but it hasnt worked because of not finding people or uni getting in the way (but might be same with job getting in way). What can I do?

      KathMacMusic Sometimes we have to get creative and make up something completely new. If you don't fit into a box - make your own box.
      Take some time to think about different possibilities - allow yourself to be really creative. Maybe being in a band isn't the right thing for you - maybe you just need to be solo - or be solo and hire a back up band? Like Selena Gomez does - or maybe you just haven't found the right people yet? Maybe you will figure out something new to do with music that hasn't been done yet.
      Lots of people make their living from music. If all those people can do it - so can you.

      Thanks for the comments guys :}
      UnParapluieBleu I make vocal melodies to my guitar tunes which forms them into full songs, so I do sing but for me its more about the overall song rather than the focus being on my voice. So I make catchy music but my voice isn't particularly a singing voice. Yeah youtube could be good, I guess I feel no one would see it here though, as you need to have subscribers interested in you first otherwise I think no one would see it- unless I made it with an interesting thumbnail/uploaded a song with an appealing name/make an actual music video :p I had been planning to upload my music to this channel, but I don't know where to start really as I have many recordings. That sounds cool, what sort of things do you write about? I think with any creative expression, we must keep that spark alive, as the 'normal way of life' is trying to dampen it with what you "should" be doing lol :p

      KathMacMusic Here's my perspective, i am an artist, i always loved to create beautiful, cool, nice picture and always wanted to do it as a living, and i got it, i'm just at the begining level but still i got my feets on the first step of my journey (Concept-Art, Illustrator).
      The thing is you don't need to be professional at the beginning, your skills will improve with time if you stick to it, so you should never stop!
      Bback then i had many art-block (if you can't come up with ideas for your drawing/picture/so go on) for month, but i always started again and again. You need stick to it don't listen to people who tell you "you won't get anywhere with your "passion/hobby"" or something else
      All the knowledge about music you have/and will obtained over the time will pay off in the future, life always reward passion, hard work, and i'm talkin about HARD WORK for your passion not something like "ok i wrote 1 song today" - that's enough fo this week, you need make research every day, you need to learn about your passion every day, you need to sleep with it. Search for inspiration, look at other arts how they do it, look at music you don't like, you will find always something new and this leads to evolution. Be prepared for A LOT of failures, you need to know that failures are your friends who will follow you till you die, failures will show you new possibilitys and so go on. Just don't stop, you can be happy, you know alrdy your passion and now just work for it. Take a part-time job, search for a shared flat, invest as many hours in your passion/hobby as you can, just don't stop.
      Look at me (22), i had my first job-offer 2 month ago and i thought my art isn't rdy yet to be selled, but some people liked it. Your job-offers will teach you a lot of new things, just don't stop.
      Hope this will help you.
      (I apologize for my english it's not my native language)

    • @katherinem502
      @katherinem502 9 лет назад +2

      Izanagi Iza Hey, thanks for your response! That's so cool what you've achieved.
      I agree, it takes a focused passion to bring the results back to you. But I know I would never stop making music until I die, whether anyone listens to it or not, as its my passion which I could not live without. But I would obviously love for people to hear it, I know it might sound cliché or something, but it feels like one of the reasons why I'm alive lol :p Yeah I'm always listening to a lot of different music, and playing guitar everyday, making up new songs regularly.
      A lot of the hard work is behind me, it's just taking it to the next progression. I know I want to be in a band, I was having trouble finding bandmates but now I have recently found a bassist who is as passionate as I am, and that's how you achieve things I believe, through passion. Like you say, don't give up, because failures are just signs of progress, at the time it appears like stunted progress, but yeah I think now it actually helps us grow towards where we're meant to be.
      But anyway I just got this 8-track recorder thing, so I'm just gonna record myself on that, and maybe just send off my recordings to loads of music publishers or something, maybe using websites like Bandcamp etc. But I would much rather be in a band with others, so I really do hope it will happen.
      And yeah, that could be a good plan for me to get any job and not a career, because I know I don't want all my time taken doing something which isn't right for me. It's just the concern that I would still have to give a lot of time to any job I do, to 'sustain' myself with rent and food, that's why I had thought of just trying to get a job with my degree, and somehow try spend only 20hrs a week doing it

    • @BunBunMuzic
      @BunBunMuzic 9 лет назад +5

      KathMacMusic You're welcome. You could also ask a studio for a hands-on training, it pays off. Just try to stay in your focus :) there are enough people like u who want the same, but many will stop and go back cause they don't believe on themself. On my opinion talent is something that works with passion, talent is the gadget and passion is the love, if you combine them together your passion will flow trough your talent and lead you to your goals. And don't stop ;) this century is something you need to use, back then you couldn't share your work to anyone, visit songwrtier-forums, etc., use the internet wisely. I am self-taught btw. everything i got is from the internet, cause here in germany art-academy/university aren't that good and very expensive. I can life very well atm. work on a part-time job (60 hours month) and doin' my freelancin'-stuff. And nearly in the future maybe i can completly life from my art, i'm still "young" so i have much to study/learn for myself. Have fun on your journey.

    What your father was trying to teach is: When you live in a poor country, you do not have easily the chance to make your dreams happend. The struggle for life is several times harder than in comparison of when you live in a developed country. Speaking for myself, I am a brazilian citizen; my country is violent, unjust, covered of dirty and full of social concerns. Guess what? Brazil is not even the fiftieth worst country for living in the world. And even so, my best expectation is to find a job that allow me to avoid living in poverty. If I only had the chance to move with my family to a developed country, I would did everithing possible in the intend of assure a brighter future to my kids.

    • @RakeshYadavPlus
      @RakeshYadavPlus 9 лет назад +5

      Thomas Hobbes Totally agreed - never feel bad about doing anything towards a purpose that you believe in like supporting your family, etc.
      Everyone is entitled to "follow their dream" - but all that comes only after basic security for you and your loved ones is guaranteed and taken for granted.
      What you are doing makes you responsible - don't feel bad. Do the best you can so that if not you, then your kids can have enough security to follow their dream. At least that's what my father did for me and I am eternally grateful for that.
      My 2 cents - coming from a guy living in India who moved back from US.

    • @JaguarStar999
      @JaguarStar999 9 лет назад +18

      Thomas Hobbes I live in another problematic country, Mexico. My family is middle class, we have many limitations right now, and yet, I have found you can always find time to do what you love if you truly love it. To say you don't follow your dreams because you live in a violent, poor country is creating reasons because you're too scared. Pele, one of the best soccer players in human history, was a poor guy who trained in the streerts because he had no money. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were poor and had almost no money to buy their guitars, yet they worked hard and they created one of the biggest rock bands in history. J-K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, was a single mom living on a dirty small house with her child, on very little money, and yet she didn't quit. She found the time and opportunity to write. If you love your dream, you will do whatever you can to manifest it no matter the odds. If you don't love it enough, of course you will find obstacles and reasons not to do it everywhere.

      +Kaylasa JaguarStar Great comment, I completely agree. Following your dream doesn't mean you have to quit your day-job or not be responsible, it just means finding the time to pursue your dream with your free time. If you'd rather go home and lay out on the couch and watch tv, you obviously don't want your dream enough to pursue it.

      my mother loved me greatly and had only big wishes and hopes for me. hence natural expectations. My parents are nothing but loving support, they too had to grow with me while I grew into the truth of myself. They did such a great job handling this rough terrain and today are by #1 supporters and best friends on the ride!!! WE have to teach others how to treat us and because I learned how to treat myself with love....they've learned to do the same!

I was a professional clown because thats what my parents wanted but the long hours, low pay (practically no pay), constant ridicule from people and cold indifference of women slowly wore me down. So I went back to college and got a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. I now earn six figures, have a smokin hot wife and 2 adorable kids...Just Living the dream. YOLO!

    Dianna, this is such an inspirational video. I am actually starting to get into contact juggling :) I have been fascinated with it ever since I was a child and I first saw the movie 'Labyrinth' - I only realised recently that it was an actual form of performance art. I won't be following a career in it, but I definitely would love to do it as a hobby! I will be watching your tutorial videos to help me :)

      So dust off the wildest, weirdest, strangest old one you have! Remember when you were four and wanted to be Spiderman? That translates (for starters) into gymnastics...and teaching. Or ti chee. Or acrobatics. Or...Cirq de Solee! You don't have to quit right away, just let yourself be a kid for an hour a day. Just one hour, rather than mindlessly watching the tube. Great things start with one step, then the second...but the point is to start!

      Do not quit a job for the dream. Start small to find out if the dream can be done. Many seeds do not become trees! In time, if the dream is good, it will MAKE you need to devote full time to it. In the mean time, a dream will keep you from being a slave. Slaves never create, they only maintain. Think about it.

So she goes on talks talking about a ball and how it changed her life. Yes I get "that's the point" but really? Now she goes around talking about it?

      It seems that about 5700 people enjoyed it enough to like it, and maybe some of the 470 000 viewers got motivated, even though we might have not. I usually get my motivation from other sources and personality/achievement types, and it seems that some other people get that motivation from other types, like Dianna David.

    My dream is to become a travel photographer and a filmmaker, so I can see the world and film everything, I love photography and film, it fascinates me, does that sound unrealistic? I just don't really have a massive idea of how to go about doing so, I'm due to study photography at college this year (I'm 18) I know what I want I just don't know how to achieve it, as the saying goes "don't step into cold water blind"

    • @Seekeroftheblackflame

      Sam Kent It's good to be unrealistic.

    • @niceblondegirl8776
      @niceblondegirl8776 9 лет назад

      +Sam Kent Photography can be difficult to sell / make money these days because of the high quality of almost every person's phone camera. That said, your desire is not a bad one - but it may or may not be successful. I'm an adult , my yt name is just for a joke.
      I suggest you start with the 1st step - that is go on a trip and guess where ? You being only 18 here's what i would do : You go a few miles from home, and no matter where you live you will find immense beauty. Often there are lots of photographers who just shoot straight ahead what's in front of them, but a creative photographer tries to compose his landscapes or subjects in a good composition.
      Take your 1st journey to a place you've not been to even if it's just a few miles from home. Try to look at that area in a nice way, perhaps a creative way and take your shots. Learn all you can about beautiful composition rather than just a photo - and start your portfolio of images - online and a few in 8x10 print form. Every journey or dream starts with the 1st step.

      +Sam Kent Totally doable! My production partner is a travel photographer/filmmaker and he's only 25 and self taught. Where there's a will there's a way. Keep your spirit high, and take photo's every chance you get! The resources are all here at your disposal (internet, networking events, colleagues, social media etc). And, to be fair most dreams are "unrealistic", but that's exactly what makes them exciting and worth going after. #Justdoit

    Hey there.
    I don't know what your dream is. I don't know who you are, or what your circumstances may be. You might be in a bit of a rut right now, or maybe a place of uncertainty. It's strange on the edge, and uncomfortable, I know.
    But listen, I have faith in you. Full faith. And I know that if you're reading this right now, it's because you were supposed to. Maybe you just need a reminder of how great you are.
    I'm not trying to be some guru, or something. I'm just a musician. I rap and sing, that's why I'm on here. And my lyrics may not be the best, nor my sound or quality. But we gotta start somewhere.
    So to you, I'd say, don't be scared to begin. And if you have already, then never be scared to continue. You have to want it MORE than you fear the journey.
    Fear is just that.

    Guys don't be disillusioned by those that "have made it". The point of life is to do what you ant to do, but you are also a biological being, you need resources. You need food and water and both are not for free. You need shelter and that is not for free. Remember that anything you do in life has a prerequisite for money. Nothing is free. So in saying that choose your dreams carefully, don't a be a slave to ambition without a means. I am an artist by hobby and passion but I don't want that to generate revenue. I want fucking money to work for me. So I naturally have gravitated to finance and consulting others in how to manage their finances because I am good with people. Enjoy life but not at the cost of you being burnt out by the end. Be smart and don't out all your eggs in one basket.
