  • The quarter windows on my 65 Thunderbird hardtop were slow and at times stopping mid way, in this video I get them back in order with very little effort.

Will be doing this on my 64 convertible this summer. Neither rear window works The passenger side rear "sorta" worked and was very slow last fall, but now, nothing. Thanks for the walk-through. I was very wary before watching this.

A thing of beauty. That works nice and smooth. After 60 years that old grease resembles old cheese.
A tear down ,clean up and lube and things often work like new with no new parts needed.
    Great stuff, Thx.

Thanks Doug, and it isn't that hard to do on these old Thunderbirds, well worth the time. 👍

Many decades ago I had a 66 standard hardtop. I had it in high school and was driving back from a band meet when I hit a huge pothole in a construction zone. It flexed the car so badly that the right door window made a slipping noise when trying to move the window up or down. When I took it apart I found a rubber centered gear just like the one that you show here and it was broken from the force of the flex. I went to the local Ford dealer and paid big bucks for a replacement gear that was a new design with the springs. This is the first time in all of these years that I have seen another of the original rubber gears. It has been a long time but I have also regreased and cleaned the rear quarter setup. This is a good refresh. Hope you get some good miles on this nice 65 this Summer.

      Hi Jeff,
It sure did help take the load off the motor by cleaning & lubricating the tracks.

THAT was a real repair, well done sir! I'm intrigued by those buttons for repair. Many years ago, the rubber had sheered in my driver's window. I couldn't source the replacement rubber and being a poor teenager, I made my my own spacers (like the buttons you showed) from doweling and some plastic tubing. Seeing those made me feel somewhat vindicated in my choice of repair at the time. Thank you as always ~ Chuck

The little dowels are not hard to replace, but a little tricky to get them all aligned while pressing them in.
I bet the price for one of the gear drives back in the day wasn't cheap, and most likely would have been only available from Ford.

@@J_R_Shop I think I tried the dealer, but they were getting low on parts by then. The local junk yards didn't have salvageable units either. That's when my dad taught me, "The most powerful tool in the garage is your brain, not your wallet" and I came up with the idea for the dowels and plastic tubing for sleeves. I think Dad was proud of me. Oh well, water under the bridge. Once again, thank you for your videos, highly educational and fun to watch. ~ Chuck

Thank You Ivan: Nothing on a old Thunderbird intimidates me more than window regulators with maybe the exception of removing of a heater and or evaporator core. My 64 hard top has lazy rear windows much like yours was. I yank it up and push it down.
Your demo video is excellent! I cant believe I let the winter go by again without tackling this window issue. It is not like I have to work outside. We have a warm, dry, roomy well equipped shop to work in. (Embarrassing) I am thinking after watching your video that in real time it probably takes four or five hours to do one window. I am ready. Great rainy day project. Thanks again Ivan.

Walt, don't be embarrassed, time slips away so quickly, and more so as we get older. ⏳
You are correct, it will take a few hours, overall it's an easy project, with little cost...well worth the time spent.

These are tricky windows for sure. I still haven't gone back to work on mine. This video will be a big help. Thanks Alvin

Another great video. I have this project coming up soon, mine have been out for a few months. I plan on going through them before reinstalling them. Keep up the great work!

Thank you...it was well worth the time to do them, it's always been an issue on this hardtop ever since we bought it, no longer a problem! 😊

    Hiya Alvin!
Well I gotta say, that is a really good idea of fords. Why can all manufacturers use this setup? I’m sure my son and I will have to do the same thing to his T-bird when the time comes, so thank you for the heads up on how to recondition these window containers.
Keep up the great work, and as always I look forward to your next video!

      Hey Troy,
It is a nice setup, just a few bolts, and out on the bench where it's easy to work on!

    Alvin,
Good work, my friend. I'll be glad whe I can get back to working on Pearline, but the backlog of my old radios and speakers has got to be worked out. They've been waiting far too long. But I'll get there.
    Regards,
    John

It's nice to have a variety of different projects, you'll be back working on the 66 when you're ready, and you do a great job on the radio repair! 👍
