- Artisan Market Baskets mix scrap yarns of any weights from fingering to bulky, and mix any fiber types! Make a beautiful tweed basket in a small or large size.
Artisan Market Baskets are excellent sellers at craft fairs! Recommended pricing: at least $40 for small baskets and at least $80-100 for large baskets. Popular with other crafters and great for storing yarn. Makes a lovely housewarming present when you put a house plant inside!
Artisan Market Baskets are crocheted with 7 strands of yarn held together as one. 8 mm hook. All single crochet stitches in US terms.
Skill level: advanced beginner because it can be tricky to crochet with 7 strands at once. The single crochet stitch itself is simple.
Crochet pattern: Artisan Market Baskets from my book Crochet Southwest Spirit: Over 20 Bohemian Patterns Inspired By The American Southwest. Available on Amazon here: amzn.to/3Wodr0J or check it out at your local public library!
Small basket requires about 1 1/4 pounds or 550 grams of mixed yarn scraps, fingering to bulky/chunky weight. That is about half of a typical plastic grocery bag full.
Large basket requires about 2 1/4 pounds or 1 kg of mixed yarn scraps. That is a full plastic grocery bag of yarn scraps.
You can tie knots to join yarns, leaving 3-inch tails to crochet over as shown in the tutorial.
Long handles required about 60 inches (152 cm) of 3/4 inch wide (2 cm wide) faux leather strap per basket. Short handles require about 18-20 inches (46-51 cm) strap. Here is the faux leather strap I used on Amazon: a.co/d/j8n6KHF.
I use a Susan Bates brand 8 mm aluminum crochet hook with a bamboo handle. You can buy it for $5.49 USD at Joann.com. www.joann.com/susan-bates-bam...

I had a stroke 5 years ago and have struggled to regain my crochet ability. I've always been a craft crazed maniac and I just tried this method of the bulky 7 strand and larger hook just to see and I can do it!!! I'm so excited and thankful!!! I'm ordering your book today and will be getting one going this week!! I must have been guided to your channel...Thank you so much.
Amazing! I am so glad you can crochet this project. Good for you for getting back to crafting. I am a neuroscientist in my day job and I love to hear about the ways our brains heal.
😢
That’s what I did after my stroke. I have cancer as well so knitting n crocheting or quilting w larger needles has really helped me get my strength back in my hands. I’m looking at a really big surgery on knee and femur so I’m looking for projects to do while laid up.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉Yay!!! May your stroke symptoms get better day by day. May our God heal your body and strengthen you with His hope. You are not alone. You ARE loved, forever ❤
Could you do an oval pattern??
You get the RUclips award for excellent instruction, as far as I’m concerned!! Your video and detailed instructions are incredibly helpful. I am 5 rows away from completing my first (large) basket, and I am hooked! Pun intended! Thanks for this video, but more importantly, thanks for making the world a kinder place by putting it out there for all of us.
Superior instruction, indeed!
I TAUGHT MYSELF TO CROCHET WHEN I WAS 72YRS.OLD WITH HELP FROM UTUBE TUTORIALS. BAG O DAY, JAYDA, LOTS OF ENLAND TEACHERS. I CAN'T READ A PATTERN
This is one of the best how to do anything videos I've ever seen!!! The angle of the camera is perfect and her explanations are simple helpful and not overly verbose. I can see and understand everything she is doing. Teachers stand up and take notes.
Wow!! Thank you so much for showing us how to make this basket!!! Your instructions are clear and I think I can do it. If I start now I may be able to make them for my whole family for Christmas. Really, that was very generous for you to take 2 hours out of your life and share that for free. Thank you for your kindness!!!!
❤
This tutorial is a blessing for me! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have so much yarn scraps and just couldn’t throw them out. I’ve saved this tutorial and know I can refer back to it when I need help. Again, thank you.
Carrie
One of the super things I find about this project is that I can use different weight yarns, some thin, some thick, all together. This is perfect for me as I am learning to spin cotton thread and right now my yarn is a little inconsistant, to say the least. Slubby, thick in parts, thin in others, etc. I can use this imperfect yarn for this basket and nobody would know! Thank you for this tutorial. It was awesome!
I have used ice cream roving yarn for blankets and I love how the thickness of the yarn changes. It just adds a little character to them. So I dont consider inconsistent yarn a bad thing. Just thought I would share that. Enjoy your yarn!
What a great tutorial! I hadn't picked up my hook in quite a while. I am almost done making my first basket and I can see how these would become addicting. For this basket, I just picked up all the odd scrap yarns that I had left over from projects past. When I initially started, I couldn't deal with fussing with all the different skeins, so I stopped, unraveled the beginnings and went ahead and rolled all my yarns into balls. My husband came up with the brilliant idea of throwing them into a large wire cage type basket and running the various yarns thru different spots in the cage, so they never get tangled. I did have to move up to a larger hook, but the result is still beautiful. Thank you!!!
Susan, thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your gorgeous craft with all of us who love crocheting.
Thank you so much for your tutorial and especially for not using any music! I have a hard time understanding voice instructions whenever there is background "noise" at the same time. I have crocheted for more than 60 years, but I learned something from your video that will help me to improve my work!!!! I love it when that happens!🤣
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video!!! Unfortunately, I did not get to finish the bag. My princess decided it was for her instead and now all the cats want one, and the family's cats, and the neighbor's cats and small dogs, and friends...
I love this. ❤️
Looks awesome! I’ve done 3 at once. 7 strands seems ambitious. I will give it a go! Thanks for the ideas! ❤🎉 I bet without handles and a bit shorter they would make great pet beds!
Yes! I can attest to that - my toy poodle crawled up into my basket several times while I was working on the sides... LOL!
I literally stopped working on a cardigan to start this basket 😂
OMG, same!!
Susan, I just ordered your book :D Since discovering your channel last week, I've made one small bag (7 strands) + 1 Hamper, 15" high -- both with sewn-on faux leather handles, and two 24"x36" rugs (also with 7 strands each. the rugs are very kushy :).. (For the hamper, I made 2, set one inside the other and crocheted together at the top; double-walled, much stronger -- rather heavy haha -- LOVE them all :D Still going thru stash yarn, working now on an interior 7-strand basket to place inside an existing one [think: Guinness for strength haha!] Thank You!! On the hunt now for thrift shop leather bags so I may use the real leather straps on the next bags or baskets I make.. LOVE this pattern - thank you so much. GBY Susan!!
I'm not only a yarn addict, but a colorful big bag addict too ! That's a very fair price for them too, Susan. If I'm able to hold a hook this size, I'm giving this pattern a try. 🥰
Have you ever thought about put each ball of yarn in a soda bottles. Like cute it on the middle and pull the yarn string from the top or maybe a plastic container with 7 holes or those wine cartons boxes that have separations. It might work. Just some ideas 🤷♀️.
So glad I stumbled across this video. I now know what to do with my moms stash of yarn that i inherited. She had so much I was overwhelmed with the amount. Now I'm glad I got it.
Thank you for sharing. I'm 68yrs. I've been crocheting off and on for yrs , never made basket 🧺 before.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial! I have been a knitter for 40 years, but have only been able to master single crochet. This video has given me the confidence to delve deeper into crochet! I started my large basket this morning and just finished it! It's fabulous 🎉❤
I’m going to try these for grocery shopping when I go to farmers markets thank you ❤
I just can't get enough of your designs! Thank you so much Susan 🧶💜
I went right to Amazon and ordered the strapping and I started a bag/basket. I'm about 3/4 finished!!! So excited. I took 3 hrs today and caked up yarn on the winder. I held 3 strands together and made cakes! I thought this would be much easier to manage!
I'm addicted now!!!!!
My husband loves them too. He would like me to make a tall one for a clothes hamper in the bathroom. I'm going to give it a try!
Thank you again! 🧶💛
Please come back and tell how it went. How tall you made the basket and how much yarn (weight) you used for it.
I'm from Kenya ,please can guide me on how I can get your book?
What a great idea! ❤

Unfortunately, I don’t have the mental capacity to watch your beautiful work. However, I did want to stop and tell you how beautiful your bags are.
I love your pattern can’t wait to try it
What a brilliant idea to use the yarns that we bought for other projects that did not come to light. Or the hook! I love the idea of using different weights of yarn. So brilliant! Appreciate the mention of the price. Currently, not there at being a vendor but as a Nana my beautiful granddaughter keeps me busy with ideas that at times keep me away from the sewing of quilts. Thank you for sharing such talent that is so inspirational and connects with life.
I'm going to show this video to my 85 year old mother. She always has a stash of wool and enjoys new projects. You have such a beautiful smile and a lovely energy, thank you for this video, it is very inspirational and uplifting :o)
Very much appreciate your beautiful and useful baskets. Thanks dearly for sharing how to crochet them and add straps.
My hands are aching watching this!! But, that won’t stop me!
Same! I’m trying to convince myself to at least try but it still looks painful.
I just found your channel and I subscribed. My daughter and I always used leftover yarn to make crazy Afghans. I made baskets before, but not like this. My friend wanted me to make different size baskets for her daughter's toys. I looked online for ideas, but never could find what I was wanting. Then I found your channel. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Hi Susan, bought your book last year when another RUclipsr promoted it following their trip to AZ. Slowly working my way through your projects online and from the book. Love your patterns and tutorials! ❤
Wonderful video and beautiful bag. Thanks for sharing ❤
I love the baskets you make. Thank you so much for sharing the technique.🎉
I am making a basket with 4 yarns because 2 are chunky and the other 2 are bulky. I tried with an 8mm and had to switch to a 9mm. It's coming out tight. It is definitely likely to not be a floppy basket. Thank you so much for the tutorial! ❤
This bag cost me over 60.00 to make. I used cotton yarn.(with fake leather straps- I bought two thin belts at a discount store)
And I only did the 10 rows of the round part.
It took me about 6 hours to make.
I do also just cotton 😅 and it is expensive 😢.
@@lydiakress6570 yes. If you want to take it up a notch, use twine from the dollar tree and mix in one strand. It makes it more of a beach bag.
And sturdier. And it’s not as expensive as the yarn. I think I used 5 of them.
I'm not sure what it is but sure that I will look it up thank you blessing.
I'll bet this would be a good stashbuster
Male plarn... from plastic bags for free (unless your city charges for grocery bags).
I did it. finished my first small basket. Made it the perfect size for a plant holder I have. and thank you so much for the inspiration.
I am glad you mentioned the pricing !! This looks like a great basket/bag. I have tons of scrap I have to use up.
I am do excited to try this. My crochet skills are the beginner level. I am pretty sure I can do this 🙏
This is my 2nd basket now and I still absolutely love your video tutorial- it’s calming and meditative for me ❤
Thank you, I now know what l’m making my mother in law for Mother’s Day.
Her variety of textures is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone *luxdups* .
Thank you dear lady for keeping us informed. Yes, we must hold compassion for the children and continue to pray for them. 🙏💫
I am starting a crochet group for older crocheter day the senior apartments and I am going to share this videos so we can use up all our scraps . I did this with a blanket using 3 strands and used so many different colors . It came out great and everyone loves it . I made it for my son . His friends have made requests for scrapghan . But I have to make this basket
You must be a living Saint with all the great things you do for others.
Best CAL ever!!!!!!❤
These are gorgeous and I have so much yarn. I need to make some of these to get rid of some of it. Thank you. You are amazing
I am proud to say I bought the book crochet southwest spirit. And I really love it . Thanks 😊
Thanks for your support! 💗
I absolutely love this watching you do the whole tutorial on how to make these bags. Thank you very much.
Hi Susan🫶🏼 you totally crack me up when you say something (like sew in the ends one at a time so they don’t show) then you subtly giggle. It’s like in your head you are saying “yeah right Susan, as if they won’t show “. I laugh at loud at your wit!
This is a fantastic tutorial and I thank you for your time sharing. 🙏🏼 I definitely want to buy your beautiful book 📕
Great job❣️❣️ LeeAnne Ray
My home state making me proud! Life-long crocheter and I love this! I'll be purchasing your book and making these. Thank you!
Peace ✌🏾🕊️ and blessings 🧶
I attempted to order your book only to find out it was on back order. I made use of the time to collect and sort my yarns and watch your video a thousand times! Pleasantly surprised that it will be arriving in a few days instead of projected delivery mid June! Now I am getting all my chores done as I anticipate doing nothing but crocheting these gorgeous bags for a bit!! Thanks for great tutorial!
I i used one super bulky, 2 thinner strands and 4 of the super saver size yarns. It made a much bigger bottom with fewer rounds...si i just started the side when it felt right! I cant wait for my book to arrive!!
So gorgeous...love them all!
Hi Susan. I am watching your video, sittong in the garden in Boston Lincolnshire UK. Whilst , I can knit I have never mastered the art of crochet. I am going to attempt to make your basket, starting with the small one. They are absolutely beautiful and a great way to use up my scrap stash.....Thank you for sharing. Also, going to look for your book on Amazon ❤
My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was 10. I'm now 68 and still crocheting, among other hobbies! I love this tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to make it. It is very well done. I'm going to get the book.
Thank you! 💗 I love crochet. So peaceful and productive.
My aunt taught me around 5-6 yo & I've been crafting ever since.

Thank you for sharing your lovely bag ! What a great idea for using up your scraps
What beautiful baskets! Great instruction! ❤️
I just found my next project (or two or three). Great idea for gifts too.
I make pretty much the same thing but crochet the handles also using my scrap yarn and going with up to 12 strands at a time. I call them my forever bags. The one i have kept i crocheted over 20 years ago.
I used to teach young girls from 9-14 how to knit and crochet with me providing the yarn leaving me with many acrylic (cheaper) leftovers. On top of that people have been very happy to give me their mom's stash that they didnt want to throw away as many dont realize thrift stores will accept them. Sometimes i do them totally random, when one ball ends i just grab another random one. Sometimes i have combined randome with one color stripes or to create a heart on one side for instance. The straps are wide enough to enable you to carry alot of weight. One time i weighed out the library booksi i was carrying and it was 23 lbs but still easy on my shoulder.
Have also used it for refrigerated or frozen foods because it is like an insulated bag ensuring things are still cold when i get home.
If something leaks its ok because i can just was and dry on heat which tightens it up a little so it never gets stretched out of shape.
I never had a problem selling them for $75-$100 each depending on the style which would vary a little. It was always feel like an accomplishment to complete one for someone because it was personalized for each person, they were quick to make, cleared out my stash and since i have always done them in single crochet so they never required total focus.
Glad to see someone else doing the same thing.
this is an amazing pattern and fairly quick to make up! at the time stamp 49:55 where your dog barks scared the bejeezus out of me! haha! its 1am here and I've got 2 babies under 2 and i thought my dog was in the other room and was barking at the door.. i had the heartstopping panic of "oh no! theyre gonna wake up!"
Thank you! Sorry, I probably should have edited out those barks. My Rosie pup is a nanny dog for sure. She only barks when a man comes to the door or when my 3 boys are playing too rowdy! 😅
I enjoyed this tutorial even as I was on a different crochet project. I felt like I had a crochet buddy. Very ASMR too.
So cute, thanks for sharing!
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing 👍🏼
I have lots of yarn that I was going to sell. Now I am going to make baskets instead! Thank you for sharing! I just ordered your book , cannot wait to start!
Thank you so much for your generosity in providing us with a complete make of your lovely totes ! I’m going to start !
A million Thank Yous❤ Love from South Africa❤
Absolutely love these ❤
These are beautiful I can’t wait to try them
One of my favorite things to make! Thanks for the tutorial ❤
Oh, mah- goodness, meticulous!!
Thank you for tutorial.
Made a few scrappy baskets from another video(lil too fast)
Today found the errors of my ways!
Excited to try this pattern🤗🤓
❤ This is a great way to use scrap yarn. Thank you.
I just finished making one of these and I am so pleased by how it turned out! I used one strand of a bulky 100% wool and two strands of a fingering-weight thin yarn held together and it is a nice sturdy basket with a few less strands than you used, but I am so pleased to be using up some of my stash yarns that I did not know what to do with! Thanks for posting
I luv this basket!!! Ty!
Goodness gracious great balls of fire. I’m making one. Thank you for instructions ❤
I love this!
These are so beautiful! Thank you so much for showing us how to make them!❤
I lived in Bayfield Colorado in the 80s. 😊. Loved it there. Planning on making these as gifts. Thank you
Brilliant, thank you for sharing, Love it.
Beautiful work! I absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing! ❤
This was fantastic. Thank you.
Beautiful baskets Susan! Can’t wait to make one!!☺️🧶
Yay! good to see you!
I'm working on basket 2 of the small version. The 2nd is a gift for a friend who keeps helping me when I cannot return the favor. I'll see her next week and plan to give it to her as a thank you. I've had to figure out how to get the occasional stray popout on the inside to go back inside, but I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have found this video! Thank you for allowing us to make and sell your basket idea! This will help me repay a small loan I just had to take out to fix my Subaru, and I find yarn stashes all the time I can use to make these beauties!
What an Excellent Tutorial!!! 👏🎉Thank you so much!!🌸👏
