In this video I talk about my long term use review of the ECHO RB-60 broadcast spreader. The ECHO RB-60 is a very durable and well built broadcast spreader perfect for applying materials such as fertilizer, lime, moss control and weed and feed to lawns. There is however a design issue that you need to be aware of to ensure tool longevity and application accuracy.

Mine was delivered on Friday 6/25/21. Took it out of the box put it together. My wife hauled the box off with the other cardboard to the recycling center. On Saturday 6/26/21 I filled it with 4 pounds of superphosphate. I set up my test run area to test its throw and then to calibrate it to put down 2# per thousand. I started my fist walk down the driveway got to the end of my test run shut the lever off to turn around. At that point I noticed the lever didn't seem to shut down all the way. I re engaged the lever to start back up the drive and notice very little was coming out. At that point immediately discovered the fertilizer prills were jamming that disc up you just displayed. I did several runs in the drive and it happened every dang time. Called Mowers direct they will not work with me on returning the product because the box is gone. I've contacted echo can't get a human on the phone, contacted through their site form page. Waiting on a response. I don't think they are going to help as well after reading reviews on echo customer service. I did google echo rb 60 and looked at the star rating it gets a ton of 5 stars. But when I click on the one star ratings I see that a lot of them are having the same issue with the fertilizer jamming up under that disc therfore throwing off your calculations so you will not get the right spread per 1000 square feet. I have $200 dollars worth of fungicide to apply on July 11th 2021. I want dare use this spreader for that product or any product. Maybe grass seed. Anyhow I've had it for 3 days it's never been in the grass. It's looking like I might be stuck with this thing. I hope echo delivers some good news this week and allows me to send it back to them since Mowers direct is not willing to help. I will say if it was not for the issue with the disc jamming with fert and the fact the agitator seems to sit a little high the spreader itself seems like an awsome strong durable unit. But if it will not spread correctly its no good to me I will not waste money on over feeding or under feeding my tall fecue.

@bogieman101 . I bought myself a solo chest spreader. The best thing. Never jams and it's not dependent on my walking speed to propel the rotor. Gears are all metal construction. I've been using it for almost 2 years. It's great. Never had a problem. The echo still under the house. Shiny and new. I might sell it one day. Never ever heard back from echo. And I have never bought another echo product.
@@scotts1111 First, I'm admittedly not knowledgeable on lawn care, which is why mine is looking liked crap, and I was thinking, what is a "chest spreader"? After looking it up, it looks like a great spreader/design. But, I have a bad back, and my yard is about 1 1/4 acre and will need a lot of work so I don't think it will work for me. So I thought, well I bet Solo makes a great push spreader-nope. Why not? Looks like they would make a heck of a push spreader. I can't believe the cheap build quality of all the push spreaders I've looked at, even the 5-600 dollar spyder doesn't impress me, looks like the knob adjustment is a weakness. Anyway, I appreciate the response..
I bought one last year and my guys use it primarily on my commercial properties and we love it.
Yeah it a nice unit for sure. Built tough. Just has that potential for granules and residue to get stuck between the two plates and cause issues. As long as it stays clean it works great. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the review on this. I was evaluating this model but went with a Lesco 80lb spreader. The lesco has the rod and addressed most the concerns with this. Unfortunately they are very expensive but you only buy it once, verse the cheaper models which can cost the same over the long run.

I picked mine up at a `Southern States' store, last spring. The main reason that I chose this unit, was due to the fact that the broadcast rotary spreader plate, is higher that the top of the wheels. If you look at any of the `Scotts' rotary spreaders, you will find that the rotating plate is below the top of each wheel, and therefor a lot of product ends up inside of the wheel , not out onto your lawn. the
It’s too bad they just don’t last though. Hopefully yours serves you better and longer. Mine didn’t even last one season before it was useless. Had other chime in with same experience. Too bad because overall I like the majority of the design and size and build. It’s just all the important moving parts seem to be an afterthought. Thanks for watching.

Yeah unfortunately it’s completely garbage. I would not recommend it. It actually broke some more after this video. I’ve also talked to a few more people who had them and they all had problems with it. Thanks for watching.
Consider an opening mechanism with a metal push rod. I'm pretty sure that would eliminate the issue with spilling due to obstruction.
Yes I thought about converting it to a metal rod in place of the cable. I do think that would be better. I’ve had other spreaders in the past with a rod and they rarely fail. Thanks for watching
I have one. Used it last year, first couple times it was good, but after that it kept getting stuck. This year, it is worse, the damn doors either get stuck open or shut and I clean it out after every use with water. I also noticed that the top spring is not keeping its tension as much as it was last season. It is a POS wish I would have just bought an Earthway.

@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess thank you I will check it out. I thought I was doing something wrong, but when it continually happens, I was beginning to think that the spreader was flawed. Sure enough, there are other channels out there that mention the same issue. I called Echo and they were no help, the customer service rep said it was the granular I was using. SMH.
I haven't experienced your problem yet but I'm just a homeowner that bought one of them and have used it about five times already spreading fertilizer pre-emergent. the only problem I have which is kind of aggravateing like if I put a 50 lb bag of fertilizer in there it's hard to get the last two or three pounds out.
I think I know what you mean. Where you need to shake or jostle the spreader around to get the last of the fertilizer to funnel to the discharge chute. I have noticed that occasionally as well depending on what I’m spreading but it’s something I’ve experienced with many different types and brands of spreaders over the years. Thanks for watching.

I'm thinking of upgrading to this unit. I keep buying those crappy Scott's ones and they don't last. I only put fertilizer on 5 lawns a season.

For professional use does the 80 ib stainless steel lesco spreader beat the echo.
I have not used the lesco but they do have a good reputation for spreaders. Honestly the echo is so bad and I have heard from so many people disappointed in it, I’d say anything would beat it. Thanks for watching.
Great job on the video, looking to buy this or a 50# Brinly. I hang my spreader up after use, do you think inserting a putty knife between the plates and rotating the drive wheel would clean or hitting with a garden hose would be the best option? Would only use 4 or 5 times a year.
Just spray it with water using a garden hose. Cleans it up easily. Any bigger fertilizer granules start to dissolve instantly and fall out. If your just using it for your own yard it should last many years. Especially if your cleaning it after each use. It’s when it gets neglected and residue starts to build up and more fertilizer pellets start collecting between the plates that issues start happening. As mentioned in the video even with commercial use it took a few months to start to develop problems. So knowing what I know now I think it would be fine even used commercially as long as it’s cleaned at the end of each day it’s used. Thanks for watching.

Brother my dealership told me they won't be selling the Honda commerical mowers no more , have you heard anything like that my uncle also told me and he lives 5 hours away from me. Are they going to make a new honda commerical ?

Is it made for commercial use only
No I don’t believe it’s classified as commercial use which may be part of the problem.
it is made for 2 uses per season with that design flaw. even if a home owner uses it multiple times through out the season it won't last. It is junk.
I have always had the habit of cleaning my tools after using.

I don't know how many times this POS has been used commercially, but I am very disappointed with the RB-60. I've been using Echo machines in my business for 2 decades, so obviously I thought this would be a similar though machine. Boy what a disappointment!
1, As others have found, the plates easily stick with the granules and don't seal properly, often spilling out. 2, The rotor is made of cheap plastic, it has to be replaced after two periods of fertilizing, because it wears out (it literally disappears), the support shoulder also wears out, so the rotor sometimes just pop ups, the granulate starts to drip out next to the shaft even if the plates are working/ they are closed. 3, The adjustment of the measuring plate is unstable, it is easily worn out and moved to a different position. 4, The position of the rotor is too high, the last handful of granules will not come out unless you do a serious tug.
Honestly, it's fine for home owners, but not for commercial use.
If you took one minute to read the manual, it says clearly in multiple languages "Wash spreader with garden hose after each use" by the looks of yours you haven't cleaned it ever!
It also says it’s not for commercial use. That did not stop ECHO from sending it to me to try out. That’s why I said in the video your probably fine if you wash it out or a home owner using it. For commercial applications though it will not hold up. After this video, It’s since broken the cable and the plastic agitator in the middle. Thanks for watching.
This is a 100 dollar spreader. It has a 5 year consumer/residential warranty and a 90 day commercial warranty lol.
I know that, but ECHO sent it to me to test. They know I would use it commercially. That’s why I said if your a home owner it will be fine and last years. It’s too bad though. The rest of the unit is built just as well as some commercial units. It’s just the whole mechanism and cable that is a let down. Thanks for watching.
I bought this spreader last Fall. What a mistake that was! For the life of me, it is absolutely useless. Grit is constantly getting stuck between the spreader plates. Constantly. I can't do two rows without a complete misfire. And Echo customer service is worthless. I highly recommend users to look elsewhere for another model that doesn't use this design. Outrageous that this device can be manufactured and distributed with such a serious design flaw.
I agree it’s garbage. Mine did not last 6 months before it completely broke the cable as well. Having to Jerry rig it together with clothes hanger. Crazy thing is even with the issues and people complaining ( look through the comments) they still continue to sell it. When it first came out it was $99 and now it’s over $200 some places. It wasn’t even worth the $99 when it came out. Thanks for watching.
I used it for about 3 months is not that good and is not a commercial unity I got me a Earth Way that much better. That's my opinion
Fair enough. I would consider it middle of the road. I’ve used better spreaders and I’ve used worst spreaders. The best spreader I’ve used was a Spyker brand. It had a stainless steel bucket looking hopper and a metal rod instead of cables. I used that spreader commercially for 10 years without issue. Thanks for watching.
