  • In this video we spend the day and night testing out a few items of new kit, including the Phoxx EV1 tent by OEX, a Gary Wines folding knife and a few other smaller items from the pack. The weather was quite nice for a change so I thought I would take the opportunity and have a relaxing day. Sorry it`s a long one. Put the kettle on and put your feet up. The links to some of the kit used in the video are below. Thanks for watching...…...

    Beautiful woods, when I saw the Blackberries, thought, oh boy, better watch out for the bears.... then I remembered, you don't have bears. Great video, thanks for taking us along.

      Hi G B, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) LOL, no bears unfortunately. You get the odd scrounging fox though. We killed all our large predators years ago. The last to go was the wolf. I think the last one was shot in 1860. That's people for you. We couldn't even let the last one die of old age. Have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)

      Sad face. Totally ignorant American, thought you just didn't have any large predators because you were an island; like Ireland doesn't have any snakes. ... People are mostly foolish, and have no clue about the synchronicity of Life, the balance of nature. You have a great weekend as well.

    Cracking film Mark. Just having a brew and saw this pop up. Nice tent and it worked well. Did a Wildcamp with the wife at South Stack, Anglesey but used the Gelert Trek 1 a budget tent (a Christmas present). I was amazed how warm it was and only used a wool blanket and had a great nights sleep. Both you and Rick do the midweek camps and it seems a great idea. Have a great week and thanks for the share. Cheers Sel

      Hi Sel, I hope you had a nice bank holiday mate :) I like it around Anglesey. Most of the time I just drive through it to catch the ferry to Dublin. Yeah, I prefer mid week. Everywhere is quieter. Plus I usually get a day off in the week. I have a nice woods about 10 minuets walk from home. But during the school holidays and weekends, it is a noisy old place :) Thanks as always Sel...…. It is always great to hear from you mate :) I will look forward to a video when you get the time :) Speak soon, all the best, Mark.

      Hi Sel, Im also a mid-week-wildcamper and really do suggest you try it out! its quite fun and in fact, even though I am quite tired sometimes the next day, I find work to be far more enjoyable that day as well!
      Just be aware that your packing up might take a bit longer so add in that extra time for packing up and heading out to be at work on time ! haha
      I upload my mid week camp sessions if you wanted to take a look.
      Cheers

    Thanks Mark, another great video. I think you may have just sent the long handled spork manufacturers into receivership? How simple is that?and so obvious???? Must also make access to the food a lot easier, oh well I’m sure I have thought of something useful, maybe once!
    The tent, I was just thinking to myself that looks like a big hooped bivi when you more or less said the same thing.
    That folding knife looks an awesome piece of work, very nice tool.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Dave, I hope you are keeping well :) LOL, maybe the short handled companies might send me some money ;) Yeah the tent was small. I'm quite small, and you had to slither to get in. If you only had the tent and you were soaking wet, you would never be able to get unchanged and into dry clothes in the tent. Everything would be soaking. Then it makes you think, If I am taking the tarp, is it worth carrying the tent? The questions we have to ponder lol. Thanks as always Dave.... it is great to hear from you. All the best, Mark :)

    Hi Mark... I don't think there is much better entertainment on RUclips than watching someone get out and use their gear and giving their opinion of it, so helpful to get unbiased information on gear. Loved the video and it's presentation alas I can't say the same about the tent and knife. I think you summed it up for me when you called it a coffin and glorified bivi bag. If I'm taking a tent I want one I can sit up in. As for the knife... I don't want to take anything away from Gary Wines, as I've said before I own his LT Wright bushcrafter, a brilliant bit of kit. The knife looked very well made and I'm sure will serve you well but speaking for myself I find the blade profile ugly. Can't all like the same stuff though can we? Thanks for sharing man, look forward to a gander at the new jacket. Be safe and be lucky mate, Wol.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Wol, I hope you had a nice bank holiday mate :) I agree, I love sitting down and watching others with the same interests, showing off their latest wares lol. Yeah the tent was a bit too small for any kind of comfort. I did mange a good nights kip though. But if you were going away for a few nights, like you say, you at least want something you can sit up in. Yep, different strokes for different folks when it comes to knives. I suppose that's why knife makers can get away with putting so many different types out there. I like the blade shape. The knife reminds me of one I had as a kid. But I'm sure I didn't pay anywhere near £50 for it lol. I like the look of the Gary Wines Bushcrafter. There were a couple of vendors at the show selling them. You can't fault LT's knives. For the money they are always top quality :) Thanks as always Wol. It is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark.

      Hi Dave, I hope you are well mate :) LOL, sorry about that mate. I filmed it again and it was out of focus. When you watched that one, they were perfect circles, just like the ones when it is loading up. The condensation in the tent wasn't too bad. But get a cold damp night and it could be a different story. I slept with the door tied back, so it was well ventilated. But all the same, it is small!! It felt like I was doing sit ups evetime I wanted to get up. You would have six pack by the end of the week lol. Cheers for the knife Dave. It has come in useful on a couple of videos. I tend to carry it with me most days. I like that size of blade on folding knife. Thanks as always Dave..... it is always great to hear from you mate. All the best, Mark.

I can see I still have the notification bell on, which should give me alerts when you post a video, but I just came across this video by accident. I guess I'll just have to type your name into the search bar to check if you have posted anything.
    I have to say, that's a great looking knife and appears to be of great quality. I recently picked up a Jeo Tec #39 (New CELTIBERO) knife with cocobolo scales. It's a hand made Spanish fixed blade and it came razor sharp out of the box. They aren't too pricy considering the quality. I'm happy with mine. You may want to check them out next time you're looking for a quality knife at an affordable price.
    I checked out every place online that I could find Gary Wines knives available in the U.S. and was unable to find a folder like the one you have. That's a beautiful folder you have there. I guess it's not available in the U.S.
    Anyway, It was nice to see you again brother. You have a blessed day.

      Dont let waiting for permission keep you from going out and enjoying, the law says you must be prepared to move once the owner asks you to so it is only an arrestable offence if you simply refuse to leave.
      if you have a few minutes you can check my wildcamping playlist to get an idea of both my very urban and semi rural / urban wildcamp sessions and how it goes for me whenever I'm out.

      Hi my friend, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) One suggestion that a lot of people make is that they work more efficiently when used a top lit, upside down fire. So instead of using small twigs and feeding the stove like a conventional twig stove, stack the fuel vertical and light a fire on top and let it burn down. The fire does last longer this way. So it is good for cooking food and boiling water. You can usually get both done before you need to add more fuel. But I still use it like a twig stove if I am just making a mug of tea, as it is usually made in the time it would of taken me to process the wood down the other way. A lot of people also use the wooden cat litter pellets. I haven't tried them myself as I prefer to source my fuel whilst out. But some say they can burn for up to an hour using them. I'm sure you will enjoy using it when it comes :) They are a handy piece of kit. Thanks again, all the best, Mark :)

    Hi Mark, Great video as ever. Looks like you made the best of your day off. Not sure about the tent though, like you I like a bit of room to move around and be comfortable. Also use the Northern Forest insect repellent and find that great. Have used Wilmas Nordic Summer for years and still do in Spain (when the mossies are out and about) they don't come near you with that on! Can I pick your brains? I've just started doing a bit of leather work and have been watching your video making a tinder pouch. I'd like to make one, just wondered what the best option is to cut out the circle of leather? Do you use your standard craft knife or do you use a rotary cutter? I'm sure you could use either but would appreciate your more experienced input. Keep up the good work. Cheers Mel Clarke

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Mel, I hope you are keeping well mate :) It is always great to hear from you :) Nice one, I'm glad you are getting your hand into leatherwork. It becomes quite addictive and everything end up in leather pouches lol. I use a craft knife and cut around a round object. I haven't tried one of the rotary cutters. One thing that surprises me is how large the circle needs to be for a decent sized pouch. It might be worth tying it on some paper before you cut your leather.
      I have got a couple of cans of the Wilmas insect repellent here. I bought it for when I was fishing in Scotland. I watched a good documentary about mossies the other night. They said it is only the female that feeds on blood. The males feed on plant sap and honey dew. They recon the males pollenate as many plants as bees do. So with a shortage of bees, they were worried about the eradication of mosquitos. Just some boring info for you lol. Thanks again Mel..... all the best, Mark. :)

So we can legally carry in public a knife as long as the blade length is 3" or less and it can't lock. So exactly as you say. Anything else you need to have a good reason, like going fishing, hunting and camping or if you use them as a work tool. Again the government treating adults like children. Oh, and you should not carry those in the city or on festivals etc :-) But I think with your job you should not have problems carrying a knife like your Victorinox Trailmaster or LTWK Genesis, right? @@andreborsch2266 If I am working then I can carry what I want. I often talk to the police who stop by at the fishery for a coffee whilst holding an axe or have a knife out doing something. But as soon as I leave private land and go into public areas like towns and in shops etc, then I would have to unsheathe my knife and leave it in the car. But the Gary Wines or the Victorinox would be fine to carry any where and in any circumstance. Unless it was used as a weapon. I read not long ago about two mountaineers being arrested in London. They were on their way to the Alps to do a few peaks and were stopped at the train station as the had their ice axes fastened to the front of their packs. It was only because they had the rest of their gear to show that they were going climbing, and not killing that they let them go free. When I was a kid, everyone carried knives. No we get every single knife crime reported on the TV to try and brainwash the non knife enthusiasts into thinking that they should be made illegal outside of the home. You can see it coming!!
