  • In this quick video we take a look at the Paramo Pajaro jacket. A jacket designed for the great outdoors with the great British weather in mind. And alongside that I thank a couple of good friends who have kindly sent me a few items to use and try out. Thanks to everyone who left a comment when I broke the camera, so now it's back we are up and running again. Thanks for watching...…...

    Excellent review and great scenery, I always use military surplus clothing (cheap and do an excellent job especially the British made gear) especially aircrew smocks as their fire resistant.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      Hi Connell, I hope you are keeping well my friend :) Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I agree, ex military gear is excellent for spending time in the woods and outdoors. I wear a lot of it at work, especially the waterproofs. They seem to last forever. I will have to check out the air crew clothing. I tend to use the army issue gear, but fire resistant is always a bonus. Like I mentioned in the video, that was a draw back with the Paramo jacket, it not being fire resistant at all. Thanks again Connell, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

      @@markbailey2981 I think the point he's diplomatically making is your lack of basic precautions when using a burner, with a very long flame when exposed, placed directly on the forest floor and very near to highly combustible undergrowth. Did you note wind direction? As a outdoor/bushcraft enthusiast, and woodsman, I'm sure you realise there's a fundamental principle to be strictly followed here.

      Hi Scott, I hope you are keeping well :) many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I have tried the citronella candles a few times in the summer here and they work a treat. I would imagine that the bugs in Korea would be a thousand times worse. Have you tried the Wilma 'Nordic Summer' insect repellent? That stuff keeps most things away. It has a real strong smokey smell to it, which I don't mind. But whenever I have been in insect prone areas, it has worked well. It could be worth a look. Great to have you back up and running Mark, Appreciate the fact that you not only share your Knowledge but actively share other peoples Crafts and Skills. Really like the Pajaro jacket bit expensive for my wallet but if your getting a few years wear out of it well worth the money, I like the drop back and the Large pockets. I primarily use ex army kit as it is cheap and it works but have recently been purchasing Fishing related kit as they havnt jumped on the Mountaineering / Fashion bandwagon just yet so the price for decent kit is reasonable. Thanks again Brother for the upload and be safe.

      Hi Brother, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice day :) Yeah it is good to be back thanks. I have still been out, but it felt weird not carrying a camera around. I agree, Paramo is an expensive brand. But the last jacket lasted about 15 years. Then you can recycle them back to the company and you get discount off a new one. I also like ex army gear. Most of my water proofs are ex issue what I wear for work and I was recently given a 30 ltr day back which I have started using. You don't have to spend a fortune to get out and enjoy your self. I was looking at some of the Fjallraven jackets and they were around £450. Gone are the days of rolling around in mud in one of them lol. Best way to wash it is with nikwax make sure your clean or the washing machine draw to remove any other trace of detergent etc etc... After washing do the same with tx direct wash in.. But DO NOT SPIN OR TUMBLE DRY IT JUST PULL IT OUT DRIPPING WET AND LET IT DRY NATURALLY... I have never had a jacket leak in me even on all day hikes I'm some really heavy rain..... Hi Gamebashers, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Northwich is a great town. It is only 20 miles or so from here. I remember working on a building site in Northwich when I first left school. They were the days lol. I have noticed that most people selling the Bramwell frying pans tend to be in the States. I was lucky that a guy in Canada sent me a couple as I was struggling to get hold of them too. If I remember correctly, a lot of the sellers on eBay will ship to the UK, but the postage was quite high. But if you don't mind the postage cost, they are worth the money. They are very light and well made. Thanks again for taking the time. have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

    A recent convert myself - I crossed over to the Dark Side a couple of years ago . 2 Paramo garments now in use , the Alta 3 which is my go to Winter Mountain jacket , and a Velez Adventure Smock that covers all bases from Bushcrafty outings to general kicking about in outdoors and walking the dog .
    I'm mightily impressed and can't see myself going back to Goretex unless I'm up close and personal with sharp rock in scrambling situations - Paramo in this area aren't as abrasion resistant . Get the layering right , and you can't go wrong with Paramo . Working hard uphill with a pack on , all I need is a decent base layer underneath and its job done .
    Good to see you back out Mark - not sure about the beans & burgers though , i'll have to take your word for them I think 👍🏼

I wear Gore-Tex when I'm working around the fishery and I can tell the difference. I agree, the fabric isn't as durable. I tore an Alta scrambling up Tryfan one winter. Paramo were great. They replaced the panel on the jacket free of charge and even cleaned it. But that was back in the 90's. I'm sure things might have changed. I was looking at the new Valez smocks. I had an early version I used to use for fishing. Like you say, they are versatile. From walking the dog, to heading off in the mountains in winter. Thanks for taking the time Neil. I've been enjoying watching your videos Mark, thanks for sharing your thoughts! It was the Pajaro that brought me here as you're one of few who's covered it and I would enjoy to hear how you got on with it long term and in poor weather. I dislike gore-tex and was thinking of layering a Paramo over a Buffalo System which should work well together...but I'm finding it a tough decision when the Pajaro is in a similar price range, pack weight, etc, as the bomb proof Swazi Tehr.

    • @markbailey2981

      Hi Cookie, I hope you are keeping well. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I have been very happy with the Paramo clothing that I have had over the years. I have had a few jackets and winter mountain sallopettes and I have always pleases by how well they perform and the ease of cleaning and proofing etc. Plus they suit the activities that I do. I like the rustle free fabric and the bonus that they can be punctured and still remain waterproof. They are quite warm at this time of the year due to the lining, but the Pajaro is a well vented jacket which wicks away moisture better than Gore Tex. But the lining helps in the winter. I usually just wear a thermal base layer and mid fleece if I am walking or working. I find the winters are more wet than cold here nowadays. If I was doing a lot of hard activities where the jacket is going to get dragged and scraped across rough surfaces, then I would look at something with a tougher fabric. Paramo fabric is quite durable, but I have tore a few whilst climbing. But as long as you don't damage the lining they or you can repair the face fabric and the jacket is OK again. In my opinion they are a great jacket. If you have a local stockist it would be worth nipping in and taking a closer look. Thanks again, all the best, Mark 😀.

I can learn by watching your videos and others but I wouldn't want to get into trouble by harming the forest; chopping down branches or clearing space on the land. What licences do I need? Hi Juntus89, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. If living in the UK, the best advice I can give you if you want to do all the things mentioned above is to try and find someone who has a bit of private woodland that you can use. We all try and adhere to the law to the best of our ability, but eve taking a knife out into a public woodland which isn't a UK legal carry knife can be classed as an offence if stopped by someone. When it comes to simple things like fires, there are bylaws which prohibit anyone from making fires unless on your own private property or if given permission by a land owner. I can't quite remember the exact figure, but is it something like 95% of the UK is owned by someone. Whether it is a local council, The church of England, forestry commission, private land owners or water companies, there isn't much common land around to be used. Of course it depends in which country you are living, but most things in the UK seem to be illegal nowadays. That is why we try and leave things as we find them don't chop down trees that don't belong to us, as again that could land you in court if the landowner wants too. If you google any of the things you mentioned like trapping/snaring rabbits, open fires etc, the government website usually has all the information and laws available. Sorry that it all sounds depressing and a non starter, but as long as you are carful and keep out of other peoples way, you can get away for a night or two in the woods without anyone knowing. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

      @@markbailey2981 I'm well for now! lol Just bought the exact same jacket...lovely bit of kit...still got drenched through to the skin when I was out for almost 6 hours in heavy rain...just re-proofed it...will test it again after the lockdown.

      Nice jacket, thanks for the review 👍 Not convinced with the burger & beans though; I'd go a tin of chilli or stew from a supermarket for a third of the price!

    Interested in this jacket, but irritated to live through merchandising for 8.50 minutes before you bothered to review the item in the title of your video. Even then nothing that is already on the Paramo website.

      Hi Dale, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I agree, that can be the problem with some outdoor gear.... the cost!! The last one lasted about 15 years, so fingers crossed I can get my moneys worth out of this one. Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)
