My wife and I loved this song and at her funeral service 12 years ago we played the studio version of Underway and In The Skies by Peter Green plus 15 more minutes of other music she enjoyed while a picture collage of her life was being portrayed on a big screen.
As I've said elsewhere, the Then Play On album is one of my favorites from that time period. In fact it's staring at me from the shelf right now. I'm so glad to hear this extended version - didn't know it (and others) existed. This is what youtube is good for. I was only in ninth grade at that time. I was introduced to Blues and Rock, and Blues/Rock and all kinds of cool music by my big brother and his friends. I was so lucky.
I hear you Albert, I was also tremendously excited when I discovered those extended versions (after a long investigation). This album influenced my life in some ways. Lord bless RUclips!
Seriously original, on the starry way long before the San Francisco sound, unencumbered or tied down by words; yet so articulate. Blues and more, so much more Like Miles in Birth of the Cool, a new standard of sound, feeling and meaning....in and of its own time yet way out front.
I played the paramount theater billed with Fleetwood mac,in 1972..! posters were spend an evening with Fleetwood mac,and my group Jacob's ladder. At that time Bob Welch was playing lead for mac.we stayed at the Portland motor motel..cable did not exist yet,so we played cards after the gig.there was lots of palpable tension due to a pending divorce between John and Christine. She understandably kept in her room, while the roadiies, band members, and a couple of friends, beat mac for 100 dolllars, and a gram of coke. You won't see that in a press release!!! Bob Welch played very well that night, and I will always feel he was not recognized like some other fine players the way he should have been.before mac he was with Aretha franklin
With all due respect, Peter Green number one, Mick Bloomfield number two and Rory Gallagher number three, keith richards number 1001. Greetings Rommel. ✌️
I would agree with your list. Rory played two songs on the Peter Green tribute 2LP set "Rattlesnake Guitar"and was spot on, Rory was able to add to the spiritual input of both songs. Bloomfield was America's answer to Peter Green, never needed to over play the instrument. I also enjoyed early Kim Simmons from Savoy Brown knowing that he was no one of the greats but I did enjoy his playing live, always a good boogie show. He was also produced by Mike Vernon and played on many Fleetwood Mac tours as the back up band.
@@davebeck4288 Bloomfield grew up playing with the blues giants, Rory is one of the best. But both Jimi and Peter's playing, singing, compositions.. very much everything touches me deep inside like no other.
@@guitarmanrommel3865 Spot on , both Peter and Jimi had a spirituality about their playing. I was a big Jimi fan loving his first 3 LP's and Peter was touching me in ways I could not explain. I saw The Experience live at Madison Square Garden in 1967? and was not blown over due to poor planning and management manipulation. There was a round arena with a revolving stage. Buddy Miles was on the same bill and Jammed with Jimi, real cool. After Electric Ladyland I drifted away from Jimi and kept a place in my heart for a tremendous innovator. Jimi wanted to fly but his management wanted him to keep to the hits that made him famous . Jimi's passing was a day I will never forget. Like Peter their music lives on. Stay well.
@@davidbeckerich Experiencing the J H Experience! If I was you, wouldn't ask for more, except watching Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac live and play the music I love. Last one.. me playing my thing , still possible but where I'm from there is no scene..pray for my last wish and you take care,be safe!☮️❤️🎵
It's important that younger people know about this kind of music this wonderful mix of playing skills they had A lot of new music sounds like crap compared to this .. Most of the time ,It sounds a lot different than this , anyway
As a younger person I'd like to say that I wholeheartedly agree with you but I will say that as a musician who plays this type of music we are out there doing this type of stuff but it takes participation from other people to go to shows explore your local music scene you are not alone friend just because it's not on the radio doesn't mean it's not being played go to your local music clubs watch the bands every so often you will hear what you are looking for
Once you hear this extended “Underway” and the complete “Madge” session from the Vaudeville Years comp, you realize what a TITANIC classic (rather than plain ole’ “all-time classic”…) And Then Play On might have been if it had been released as a double album! (And that’s never minding the epic barnburning 24+ minute “Rattlesnake Shake” they played Live In Boston! PHEW - jamming was NEVER any better! [yeah, that’s right Deadheads - I said it!])
I always have been a big fan of the Grateful Dead’s Jams - and always have been a big fan of THEN PLAY ON. This is the quintessence! I totally agree: They should have insisted on the double lp!!! Someone should do this for us 😄
Only since the CD invent 25+ yrs. ago did people start wondering & hearing what happend after that damn studio fade - this is a great example , what only an extra 13 min.!!No matter how long or short it's nice to hear the true ending! One other great unfade is the {only } 8 smoking seconds more of "Puzzles" by Page/Yardbirds on a obscure Japan doublle CD
What 'feel' the man had! Right up there with the immortal greats of blues guitar. I love to hear them just jamming like this, and could listen to it all day. Peter Green and Danny Kirwen, we miss you so much - if only the flame had not been extinguished so early! Imagine them having a career as long as Clapton? What could have been....
1968, and an early introduction to the world of psychedelics, I saw these boys at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. Needless to say a very high musical standard was set for me that evening... So genuine, charismatic, and tight
I MUST ask, is Peter playing harmonica on Lemon Squeezer from these shows? I know Paul Butterfield played with them so just wondering? ....If this was played when you saw them and do you remember?
Many thanks, peonwarrior, for uploading this fantastic version. I never came across it nor did I know that it exists, up to to this day. Thank you. :-)
Great version of a beautiful spiritual song, it always had a calming effect on me. U believe that Peter Green exhibits a direct connection between his head, hands his fingers and a higher power. All the extended versions from the "Then Play On" LP are fabulous and when pieced together make a wonderful extended version of Then Play On. Great input here and bless The Green God!
Then Play On was the apex of art rock of that time period. It evoked emotions I didn't know I had. What a dirty trick that saw Peter and Danny melt away without any more songs to record together. Jeremy also knew he didn't understand their new songs and was gone also. The only good that came of it was Christine. Luckily they left us lots of live and recorded outtakes. Long live Peter and Danny and in their recovery . They were a tremendous influence on millions of people. Thanks

Then Play On is on my "desert island" play list, #1😘 I still have my vinyl LP from when it came out, I was in high school!! 💚💓💚🎶🌟🎶💯
This is fantastic .The live versions they settled into were even better . Sublime doesn't cover it. Music for the gods !

Both Vaudeville Years double CD sets are excellent. A must have for REAL FLEETWOOD MAC fans.

Must have been after Sept. of 72 because Kirwan was the lead guitarist up until then. Welch was on rhythm.
One of their best songs. I can listen for hours to this

When they used to be a British guitar band and I was teenager.
Anyone hear a bit of an echo of Hendrix " 3rd stone from the sun" ?
I love this band so much!
For sure and also"may this be love" .
Sounds wonderful. Great ambient sound. Clearly this has been remastered. Was all the material on The Vaudeville Years also remastered?

'Then Play On' is one of the best albums of all time. But McVie never knew how to properly tune his bass guitar.
Why do they all have the same colored eyes?
Turns out they were all Betazoids...
They were given new eyes by the record company as a bonus ..
Great improvisation from a very good group of musicians. Somewhat like their German counterparts Agitation Free.
