I was more into jazz....grooving, sharing, umm....that kind of stuff, and like but Link Wray, man. Link Wray affected me so much that first of all, alot of my style, alot of my chords and stuff I got by copying, you know? I saw him on TV man. I'd never played guitar, and he had his guitar that looked so offensive, it was phallic...Rumble, man.....Rumble just blew me away. That's what turned me on to playing guitar. He's the father of the power chord. I still remember it as one of my strongest memories, man. It just burned itself in my mind. I heard Rumble....it was '58. When I heard that, what I heard was, dirty, man. What he was doing was saying, f#ck man, kiss my ass, you know, real rebellious shit, you know, without saying it, you know?' -John Cipollina
Quicksilver Messenger Service initially held back from signing a record deal but eventually signed to Capitol Records in late 1967, becoming the last of the top-ranked San Francisco bands to sign with a major label. Capitol was the only company that had missed out on signing a San Francisco freak band during the first flurry of record company interest and, consequently, QMS was able to negotiate a better deal than many of their peers. Quicksilver Messenger Service had appeared on the movie and soundtrack album Revolution.
Quicksilver Messenger Service released their eponymous debut album in 1968. It was followed by Happy Trails, released in early 1969 and largely recorded live at the Fillmore East and the Fillmore West. According to David Freiberg, at least one of the live tracks was augmented with studio overdubs and the tracks Calvary and Lady of the Cancer Moon were recorded in the studio just before Gary Duncan left Quicksilver Messenger Service.
These albums, which have been hailed as two of the best examples of the San Francisco sound at its purest define the classic period in the group's career and showcase their distinctive sound, emphasizing extended arrangements and fluid twin-guitar improvisation. Cipollina's highly melodic, individualistic lead guitar style, combined with Gary Duncan's driving rhythm guitar, feature a clear jazz sound, a notable contrast to the heavily amplified and overdriven sound of contemporaries like Cream and Jimi Hendrix. In 2003 Happy Trails was rated at #189 in the Rolling Stone Top 500 albums survey, where it was described as the definitive live recording of the mid-Sixties San Francisco psychedelic-ballroom experience. Archetypal Quicksilver Messenger Service songs include the elongated, continually re-titled suite based on Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love?. Additionally QMS had a reputation for joining their fans in the use of LSD during their live shows.
QMS's guitar work shimmered with a brilliance and clarity which made other bands seem murky in comparison. Unlike most members of the other San Francisco acid rock bands, who were often folkies converted to rock, John Cipollina and Gary Duncan were rock musicians before forming their band. Gary Duncan's playing clearly had the broadest scope of any guitarist among the S. F. bands and he had an expert facility to deliver it. Equally expert was John Cipollina, who also had the clearest vision of how he wanted to sound. Cipollina's playing was so completely given over to that vision, and he presented it so well, that the question of scope never arose. John's electric guitar playing was the musical essence of electricity itself, as though he was playing the current directly and the guitar was the valve that allowed him to do that.
This looks like the kind of concert that when it was over you didn't know which direction was home.

It's been a long strange road for me since 1973 and now it's 2020. We danced hard to this in 1973 and some of us old hippie boomers are still out dancing hard , waving our freak flags as "Stupidity and Selfishness" fight it out to the death.
John lived across the street from me on mount tam we called it rock and roll hill as Santana lived on the other side from John about once a month John would come over out of smoke and he would clean all my pipes and get the resin out and we would get so fucked up and sit for hours John would tell me story’s of mount Tam.he knew about all the places the live stock hung out.John would baby sit my son Sean when my wife and I would go out. he lived i a real small cabin and he had a open coffin that he called his bed and he would sleep in it and he had a pet tarantula that romed around the room. I miss our friendship he was a good guy.

So grateful for this video! I am a San Francisco native, born in 1951, and went to almost every Quicksilver concert between 1967 and the mid-1970s when Cipollina, my idol, left the band. This video is one of the few I have seen on RUclips that truly captures what the experience was like to hear Quicksilver live. So glad the concert was recorded and preserved!!!

That must have been marvelous my parents always played this then my mother moved on Dad raised nine of us I'm in the middle Brothers the oldest. So when David come home from work and kick back he would play some of this what you going to do about me. So hush Little baby. Spectacular music from Days gone by but never forgotten it stays alive in my heart mind body and soul. Along with all the other unique music he would listen to
I attended Fillmore concerts and Winterland in late 60s early 70s. QMS was always one of my favorite groups. With Cipollina wailing on guitar, and top of the line vocals, it made for an amazing evening
Saw them opening for The Dead and they just blew them away. They just weren't commercial enough for the time.
The Dead were brilliant at their best but awfully inconsistent from one gig to the next. When they had their timing down and Jerry was playing inspired solos they were a very interesting band but at times they were simply a mess.
From everything I've read, the labels were trying for a while(the Dead, Jefferson, Moby,et al) , were all making it big and the record companies wanted them. But QMS weren't interested. Just wanted to play.
I clearly remember a friend sitting me down on his couch and telling me "you ain't never heard who do you love like this" as he put on Happy Trails album... he was right... still is. Fell in love with Cipollina and Duncan. To this day that album remains a favorite.
Great clip! These guys played at my High School (Pleasant Hill HS) in 1966 and just blew all of our little Beatle minds....

I first commented on this some 8 years ago, got it on vinyl and CD. I’m 79 now but still play it. This just might be one of the finest examples of real rock and roll. So called musicians of today just can’t compare.

Saw QMS, Grateful Dead, John Mayall, and It’s A Beautiful Day, all in one concert in Houston in 1970. All for about $10. All were great but QMS complete Who Do You Live Suite was the stealer. Even surpassed Mayall’s Room to Move.

I followed them everywhere…from S.F. all the way to a beach in Santa Cruz…hundreds of shows! They were my favorite! John C….a huge crush! I was young!
One, if not, the best of the '60's guitar bands: incredible jam of a Bo Dudley song that for years defined guitar jams with a Rock'n'roll vibe and rocking beat. One of the best of the psychedelic '60's bands, especially live. Long live Quicksilver Messenger Service!!!

An exceptional performance.
Love the danseuse in bright white sneaking to the front of the stage -- quite the visual "blast" for those with dilated pupils and/or heavily influenced brains. Quite the show. Was only ever exposed to the album version; this is a wonderful rendition by a famous SF EXPERIENCE! QMS must have given The Dead a real run for their money! Yes, infinity kudos to whoever arranged for filming and a great job on sound engineering (usually the most thankless job for concert recordings -- consider Woodstock 1969!!!). Thanks so much for posting this seldom seen gem!

I am so glad that someone captured this event, as. Quicksilver in their prime with those2 guitarists was one of the best bands of the time, and there were few people who preserved these concerts. Rare. Too rare. Jefferson airplane and others were very good but ... the dead, of course, had the master, jerry. There will never be another quicksilver, and their talent is all the more precious because they did not last long, and, as I understand it,had their flat nights, and they had to contend with Dino.".....all the rest of the guitarists of the time, including jerry, recognized cippolino as a unique guitarist, but I would also like to acknowledge Gary Duncan. How many bands have had 2 great guitarists
Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop in the Butterfield Band. Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, and Derek Trucks in the Allman Bros. John Cipolina and Gary Duncan in Quicksilver. That's it.

@@macmccreadie8541 right on, i can see that...... i was 14 yrs old in 1968..... i don't know if u were around but one thing we all forget is just how new ANY volume was in late 60's...... the only loud music on the planet was at Winterland and fillmore type places....no one had big systems at every lil bar....no kids owned big amps in the bedrooms...... so you are not wrong, there was a ton of noise that on tape sounds like shit..... but live it was exciting and frickin loud as f#$k....... Rock concerts were rare early on..... more of an event...and more experimenting w/ equipment.. cheers...

In the 47 years since this album dropped, no one has ever really duplicated Cipollina's signature sound.....a screaming guitar pitch that grabbed you by the balls and could etch into your bones at high volume. We played the Who Do You Love? album a thousand times back in the day.

wow, my friday night here and remembering how lucky we were...i saw QS for a 2$ ticket along with Country Joe if memory serves....they rocked the house and I still listen and feel like I am 14 yo and knew the score....we probly did compared to the circumstances now...60s and 70s were amazing and intense, thank you!
Can't imagine anyone on stage now in just a tee-shirt & jeans. Not enough 'staging' for modern sensibilities; to bad. Pure music here.
They are one of the best rock bands I ever saw/heard in the 70’s and after. Their songs are unforgettable!

Gary Duncan was always under-rated as a guitarist, because of John's amazing playing, but,man, Gary really shines here.

I don't know what current RnR HOF policy is but as of 2012 they would let touring bands in for free & the last 1/2 hour to 40 mins before close (& before soundchecks) was always free to the public, that is enough time to check any new revolving featured Artists. That said, QSMSx Deserves But Do Not need no Stinking HOF. They are running out of Artists & for 5 to 7 years have been forced to add older & newer artists they Never would have before, imho that all got traction when Patti/PSG/The Patti Smith Group got in~(Lest We not forget Guitarist Lenny Kaye who put out "The NUGGETS" compilations), but in the end Album sales still are a big part of it & the many comfortably numb Pleasant Valley Sunday honcho's there. Bests, dtf Ps, QSMSx still gets Indie & College RADio Airplay in Chicago, it depends on the DJ's tastes but even if it's not their thing all those stations here take & play requests & have QSMSx in their Libraries as well as much of/most of the main Lineages going back to the roots & DJ's will bring records from home to spin too. Since 1972 through & till '93/'94 & Seattle Grunge WXRT Chicago & Later WMSE Milwaukee & WORT Madison Wi played QuickSilver & their ComRADS Often at night~The Best time imho, now they like many are hindered by corporate manAGEMENT & Are Run By the KGB Like "Audicy/Audicey"~sp, i know the WXRT DJ's tastes & the DJ's still go to Big & small mostly touring gigs and they do what they can with a Heavy Heart of being hindered. Last time i was in SF was 2011 & SF RADio for me had been in Decline, i was in shock! But KFJC (89.7 FM) ia non-commercial college radio station in Los Altos Hills, California & DJ Maybelline who i met at a Patti Gig was/?is a Friday?Saturday Eve GR8 DJ.& not the only GR8 1 there, Be Well, Bests, dtf~the name was bequeathed to me in "79 by fans & bands & club owners/Workers from a KINKS song. Ps, nothing like QuickSilver in the fog or if you have been dumped.
They remind me alot of the Allman Brothers. What is hidden in all this sound is that they were tremendously proficient as musicians.

@@andrewarthurmatthews6685 Both groups were psychedelic. Pink Floyd was experimental in this fashion until the second side of the album Meddle. David Gilmore mentioned this. Quicksilver was a San Francisco underground band. They could have become much more popular as they were tremendously talented as musicians. In contrast, Pink Floyd sounded kind of experimental, noisy, and undisciplined until the album Meddle.

@@andrewarthurmatthews6685 Actually, Quicksilver was a psychedelic band like early Pink Floyd and jammed early on like the Allman Brothers. They weren't just a bunch of long hairs. At times, they would turn on the proficiency.

This band had two great lead guitarists, some of the best keyboardists in the business, solid bass and drums, and three players who could sing lead vocals. Not too shabby!

Right on, its mind-blowing that some people listen to today's music at all. Sometimes I'll walk past my teenagers bedroom, I hear some pretty horrific stuff on the other side of that door sometimes. Is that the evolution of music? Haha..

Aye Bonnie what Legends the Quicksilver are! Wish I'd been able to c them live in the Bay Area! John's guitar 🎸 Style is very powerful he is the master of the Tremelo/ Whammy Bar!! Never seen anyone use it as Savagely as John Great Sounds from his SG! Welsh Rockers loved the Vibe n Sounds of the Bay Area! John Guest's on Mans Superb Live Album Maximum Darkness! He Introduced himself but the Man Band didn't Believe he was John Cipollina! So they asked him to do the Growl which he did! And that's how he came to play with them! I love Maximum Darkness! And Happy Trails 👣! Would love there to be More Live Album's of their's! As Performing live they were at there Best! Some Bands r More Studio Orientated! But Quicksilvers Sound n Performance is Best Observed at a Live Gig! Like their fellow Bay Area Giant's The Grateful Dead! Live Band every times over Studio Album's! Sadly John's passed away! True Legend of Mine Along with Skydog Duane Allman Rory the Irish Wizard Gallagher! Sinner Boy done good! And Koss of the Superb Free! He was the King of Sustain No Effects Pedals Needed! Koss on! This Quicksilver concert 🎶 well captures the intellectual and social zeitgeist of the times.
Gary said his favorite music is Coltrane, Miles (Davis), and Jobim. I can hear a lot of Trane in Gary's modal solo here. What an amazing, and grossly underestimated guitarist he is... His concisely succinct and beautiful solo on "All In My Mind" blows a lot of Jazz guitar players away. No other rock player (except for Carlos Santana) could emulate such magnificent tone of his guitar no matter what guitar and amp he plays. The guy's a true genius!! Saw J Cippolina when he was near his end at a small club im the south bay. Leon Russell, D Frieberg, Edgar Winter, Barry Melton were all there. Twas quite a nite... I’ll never forget it!
@@Rich915 omg!! So lucky!!! I love QMS but born 10 years too late to see them live. Grew up with Leon Russell~JJ Cale aka the “Tulsa Sound” and lots of live music. Bumped into Leon when 19 at a small venue; had no idea who he was at the time. He was alone, playing his upright piano and there seemed to be a glow surrounding~emitting from him. Long gray hair/beard. It’s hard to explain but I was totally mesmerized; still picture visual today, thanks for the memory.

Okay kids this was 46 years ago or so. I remember way back in the late '60 seeing this band and it was an amazing experience. The music went on and on every four minute track turned into these amazing jams much like the video you are watching. Like I said amazing absolutely amazing 😎

Thank God that someone had the foresight to record this I was just going through RUclips and I happened onto this Quicksilver recording these guys could just Jam they were so great I wish I had a time machine and could go back to San Francisco to the Fillmore in the winterland and Avalon Ballroom and see all these greats their first album is still one of my favorite albums what can I say they're just too cool man
Bill Graham recorded everything, most QMS stuff was too dark to see much of anything
@@aurora1957A I met Bill (he was tending the juice bar) at a Butterfield gig. It was "10 Years After's" first US visit. Bill said they were the next big thing. They were. I was trippin heavy that night. Quicksilver was always a favorite.

Cipollina, yes;. Dino, not so much (not at all, really).
This performance is astounding. I always did love these guys. Look at what a unit they were. They talked to each other with guitars and whispers. This song doesn't feel like it's being performed toward the crowd, but rather that the crowd is invited to observe the re-creation of it as a free form jam. I have their double LP record, and I love it. This epic piece reminds me of why.
You know, in a sense, it reminds me of that Vanilla Fudge jam, "Break Song," that took up the whole side of an LP.
Astounding is the word. Peeerless is another ..superatilave band.

@@KaiserBlade Did you know that Bill Graham produced many, many shows at Winterlnd? All those plaques on the balcony with pictures of just some of the artists that played shows at Winterlandas seen in The Closing of Winterland video? Those are Bill Graham produced shows...Look it up. Too bad you never went to any of those shows. I went to some of them; they were great. You would have loved them.

John Cippolina and the entire line up of Quicksilver were powerful Haight Ashbury bands. I saw them live nearly every week when I lived there either at the Fillmore, Avalon, or Carousel Ballrooms and of course Sundays free at the panhandle in Golden Gate Park in the Haight. Sadly very few people understood the entire movement because by the time they discovered it in the Summer of Love it was over. In the late Spring of that year, we gathered around a real coffin and most of us old-time young hippies tossed our beads, etc into the coffin and carried it to Golden Gate and buried the Hip movement. You see by the end of 1966 bus tours were all around the Haight. Dark drugs and darker dealers arrived. And the caravan of the young lost abused kids of America arrived and the name Street People came into being. But the music lives on even as my generation is passing away. It was uplifting indeed but not about flower children, flower power, free -sex, etc
but yes it was about Rock n' Roll.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Its easy to romanticize, but the period after seems real dark to me and not romantic at all. I saw some documentaries on it, and it is sad to me to see so much longing to be, left unanswered mostly. I never knew about this ceremonial goodbye, good to hear that it was clear to you that it was time to move to a different place.

Winterland was the first place to have in house video. There was this mezzanine that went round the whole place, where the concessions were....there were a couple of bars and a head shop and the usual merch stuff....hot dogs and such.....the video and the audio feed from the board was distributed to all those locations....there's a great wealth of old Dead shows and other stuff out there from Winterland....Saw many shows there.....best venue ever!

Before the internet it was a challenge to plug into the bootleg tape trading circles and being a kid from a small farming based town I had no idea there were bootleg recordings available until the early 90's (and those were only advertised in the classified section of vinyl collecting mags for wa-a-a-a-y too much money) and I didn't catch on to the tape trading until the late 90's but when I did I made up for lost time and made some great friends who I thank eternally for getting me started with those QMS boots!!

One of my favorite bands, it's too bad they never made it to my neck of the woods. Happy Trails is in my Top Ten LPs, and stands alongside Live at Leeds and Band of Gypsys as best live album ever recorded. While I liked some of the later work, they really really should have stayed a guitar band.
This tune here cements Quicksilver's place in rock history! Man, This is a killer version!
This is how I remember the concerts at the Avalon and the Fillmore! This film has such a dream-like quality to it.

Love the black and white!. Great version that brings out the intricasies of lyrics and instruments! Feel like I'm present at the performance--Wow! Great groove by the drums! Nice blending into one tune bringing in psychedelic nicely after strong upbeat beginning, then back to easygoing followed by excellent psychedelic, ending with exciting beat and sudedenly tearing into final guitars raising the roof! Showing this supremely talented group at a level greater than studio version! Great ride!

Yes. Harold Aceves as drummer #2. A friend of mine. He passed away a few years ago now. I had this footage for years, but couldn't share as Harold was worried that BGP would find out, and he would be in trouble (he was a VERY sweet person, never wanted to step on toes) for it. Cipollina was a "guest" because his band, at the time, was Copperhead, which was the opening band to QMS at this gig.

Excellent! So glad to see this clip. Gary Duncan was/is tremendous, and one of the most underrated lead guitarists ever! Cip got all the attention, and I don't know why Gary doesn't get just as much love. Visually, Cip had the cool factor down, but I love Gary's guitar style and those sort of latin-flavored licks. QMS were brilliant.

they were an incredible pairing..each different from the other and yet perfectly dovetailed. I remember well when the first album was released.. I played it over and over and over and ‘tried’ to play along with them.. It was incredible music.. completely admire them both.. Rest in Peace Cip., health and peace to Gary
Agree completely. Band are beyond compare, really.
Gary was good -excellent even -John was a genius -who's playing is immediately recognizable and singular. Hip factor has zero to do with it a dumb and demeaning thing to say about the finest guitarist of that whole scene played out at the Avalon and the Fillmore West -was John an incredible presence onstage? Yes. He was also the far less prosaic of the two geetar players in that band...a band I saw many, many, times..... Even Duncan has noted in interviews John was the better guitarist.....and live onstage- it was readily apparent -even here his licks are like John made ordinary with standard blue based chops -but clearly back then Gary wasnt happy being the front man and second guitarist -you could see the tension onstage....unfortunately, it destroyed the band -and hurt Garys legacy -as just think of what Quicksilver could have gone on to do with the original lineup -without the addition of the talentless, patently awful, Ego Valenti -but we were all young then....
I'd be wary of chucking the word genius around and the need to play Cipollina against Duncan is, I think, unnecessary since the point is how good they were together. I'd rate their partnership as up there with Clapton (in the days when he was one mean, serious mother) and Allman, as the best I have heard. 'Happy Trails' is the only record I have actually worn out as I played it so much! Anyway yours isn't a post I entirely agree with but it's interesting and good to find a Cipollina-lover as QMS

Damn I can't believe I've never seen this! Gorgeous and heavily instrumental! A time when musicians could write whatever the hell they wanted to. That's quoting someone from QMS interviewed in 1980 when I was in college. Though I love Shady Grove, that live jam is second to nothing! So glad this is getting the exposure it deserves. Aurora you rock!

They were my favorite for a long time...but I do think it's funny that people think of Gary Duncan as the rhythm guitarist when he played just as much lead as John...and probably more in this vid!
Two lead guitarists is how it should be described . But if you listen to alot of people you would think Duncan filled the Bob Weir role .
My older brother Joe born in 49 introduced me to this band with the Shady Grove album still have the vinyl album, Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder is a epic song!!!

amazing rendition...68 my high school heard them at Palo alto lodge dance...they all ways had small American flag on drum setup. remember the fool from set back then. my appreciation of their talent now more in awe, than then sadly..saw them at Fillmore West too...happy trails!

Thank you. Nice to know details of that remarkable period in history. The musicians and obviously dancers learnt their crafts because they loved music and that's why the music was so good. This is an excellent performance too bad this isn't on a CD. Better than anything that came after Happy Trails.

Every time I hear this tune, which is the last five days in a row, I think of the Allman Brothers at the fillmore east. Did the Allman's get any inspiration from Quicksilver? Man, this song is amazing, the way they improvise, especially at the end. WOW, is this tune good! This will be the 2nd time I have heard this tune today. What talent!!!!!
