  • Quicksilver Messenger Service with an outstanding outdoor performance in 1969. From Ralph J. Gleason's "Go Ride the Music" produced for KQED. This excerpt is presented under fair use for educational purposes.
IMHO the finest Quicksilver Messenger Service performance available on video!
    :)
P.S. You might want to consider buying the DVD; it's inexpensively packaged with "West Pole" and has a ton of previously really rare & unreleased material on it.
    :)
    quicksilvermess...
True concert footage of Quicksilver Messenger Service remains rare, and any hardcore fan of the band will want to get the limited edition 3 DVD set "Recoil" which includes never before seen video (seen by me anyway) of Quicksilver Messenger Service live in concert! A truly bitchin' extended psychedelic version of Who Do You Love is my personal fave! Watching the duel lead guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan is something to see!
anyway, get "Recoil" here while it's still available

This video is from Sonoma State College in April of 1970. This was a free concert for the college students and local community. This is a well-recorded video/ audio for it's time. What was truly amazing was guest artist, Nicki Hopkins, playing a grand piano somewhere in the background. I was there with my friends, dancing in the fresh spring air. What a different world it was! So glad that this showed up on you tube.

Best kept secret treasure truck buried in a back of Chevy trunk about to get stuck on train tracks before you kiss me back and let’s not just drive let’s kiss the sky goodbye and yes I like to drive. But I can also float a boat out to furthest corner of flat world we can fold and seal with a little blood and wax just one kiss so I can spit it back. Is the end of the world or the beginning of eternity. If you make that face one more time I’m going to have to leave you here and come back someday? What? I have my universe and you be in reverse. Merry go round style? Or round about, spin your partner. Who who calling a square? Im so high I can fly. But I’m much better down on the ground and breaking glass and showing off the thing I love and do best which is dance

@cullyred ....DAMN, I went to Sonoma State University from 1982-1984. Would've been nice to see shows like this. They used to call it "Granola State".....Those rolling hills that can be seen in the backround has a place called GRAVITY HILL....We used to do bowls of skunk and sometimes trip on L, and freak as our car rolled backward while going uphill !

I loved QMS, saw them several times, in 1968-1971, John Cippolino was such an excellent guitar player. My husband and I were lucky enough to go ona New Years Eve cruise of the Oakland/San Francisco bay, in 1981, John was playing in the band that night, at the private party we were invited to, it was awesome 👏

Ahhh Beautiful. I miss this peaceful hippy scene. People alway criticized this culture, but it was peaceful and no one was out burglarizing the cars. Every once in a while someone would sell you a purple sweet tart and tell you it was purple haze but that is another matter ..... Let's start a new peace movement based on protecting the environment ....

Thanks for this particular version of QMS playing Mona! It has a distinctly hot live sound.
Has it been remixed and retweaked? Because the guitar sound and the rhythm section are
clear and right there. Besides loving QMS the sonic, driving tone of this version is right in
your face it almost makes me feel or its 1967 again; and I'm seeing them again! And that's
good. Hoping there's more groovadelic versions of the them mixed like that! Thanks again
    more people need QMS.

That overstated, pushy, little phony "Chet Powers" or Dino Valenti ruined the band. He is utterly incongruous, bumbling around, shaking his shoulders. Fortunately he was in jail for QMS first two albums. Hard to believe he wrote such an excellent song in the form of "Get Together" as performed by the Youngbloods.

The true Acid Cowboys of the Purple Sage. Blues with a distinctive spin upwards with scents of whiskey, leather, incense, and patchouli.

Kudos should go to bwaje who originally posted this.. it's only recently became commercially available along with West Pole, I think you will absolutely love the 2 DVD set and it's a tremendous bargain. IMHO.
I've noticed (when radio intrudes) a bit of PCs have changed everything, but a 128 track studio in ones home does not replace the hard work, practice, and constant live shows these folks did.
Some things will never be the same...

So you got a band already on their way to being legendary basically just playing out on the grass somewhere that looks like a free concert? Yes, those were the days. John Cipollna gets the credit for their great guitar sound, but Gary Duncan drove much of it. You can see him do that here. Maybe not that easy to catch given the camera work and editing, but he’s definitely the star.

Yes, Nicky Hopkins is playing for this show, you can catch just a glimpse of him on another of the QMS videos of this same show on "Go Ride the Music".
My information is that this lineup lasted until early 1970.

I saw this band in L.A. a few weeks before this gig. A great show at the old Olympic Auditorium in downtown LA, where they used to have the wrestling and roller derby!! If you can find an old EMI English import LP called the Best of Quicksilver Messenger Service, the cover photo was shot at the Olympic. Gary Duncan was one of my favorite players. Along with Jerry Garcia, they inspired me to pick up the guitar.

This is absolutely wonderful, and somewhat miraculous, for the age, considering camera and sound equipment in 1969. Truly a great clip. QMS were the best. Tragic they were separated in their prime by the repressive marijuana laws of the day.
