Peter Green's 10 minute solo on the Fender Bass VI? One of the most underrated guitarists of all time on one of the most underrated instruments of all time. Awesome is too small a word.
Hey Colin you still there? OK, so i always thought it was a bass solo (tho by McVie), but then someone told me it was a regular 6 string where PG was using the bottom strings. BUT i had the original broadcast, and the mongy emcee actually says, "Peter Green changed guitars with the speed of an eagle". He's clearly got a wah wah for the bass bit. Is the high-pitched end bit also on bass? I guess so. Don't spose there's any footage of this or similar - not that i'm totally obsessed or anything... :-) And finally, why he fudge was PG doing a solo on a bass? How long had he been doing that for? Soz 4 all the questions.x :-)
I knew that Peter would play these awesome Bass solo's on "Green Manaleshi". An anecdote I heard when Aerosmith was talking about their love for them was that Danny Kirwan would play one as well. Triple bass attack. It appears, from looking at the guitar, that the option to use it as more of a "baritone guitar" instead of a true bass is there. Just....spitballing, but I suspect that is what is going on.
I've not seen any footage, but there's several pictures online. Search Peter Green Bass VI. That should bring up a pic or two. You can actually hear him flicking the pickup switches from time to time in this recording. I own 2 Squier versions of this instrument and they're awesome.
@@colinmoore5991 Yes I love the sound of the switch flicking! I used to think he was tapping the guitar body! It actually fits into the rhythm! Yes baritone guitar is a good way to describe it I guess.
This is simply mind blowing. Peter Green exhibits a direct connection between his head, hands his fingers and a higher power. The genius of Peters playing shows that he was a spiritual being open to many ways of expression. The Green God is showing us why dispute his passing his music will live on. RIP Mr. Green
A rare example of the instrument playing the player. By that I mean the feedback that occurs when a string is plucked and the resulting vibration is not only sound but the vibration is felt in the spinal cord. It becomes a spinal chord, resonating up and down till it becomes connected to the higher power of ? The green manalishi? 😂 Namaste 🙏
I recorded this off the BBC radio in about '87 when i was 16 coz my cousin was into the Mac. The Green Manalishi blew my brain completely.. and still does. I played it to whoever would listen.. "with the lights off" - one lad would take the p1ss. I'm just glad that it's finally in the public domain again, coz i lost my TDK D90 copy a while ago! As mentioned below, it's way way more powerfult than the Boston Tea Party gig, i spent some very hard-earned cash on that trying to get hold of this version on vinyl. Eventually the BBC released it, but faded it out! Only the Beeb could be so stupid.. I subsequently became a massive Hendrix & Cream fan (not to mention early Floyd, Zep, Free, Purple etc etc) but this one song for me is the ONE piece of music, if i had to choose. There is no soloing like it, it's unearthly. Seriously, if anyone knows of anything like it please can they say, because i want to hear it!
I feel you bro/sis! Although I would have to say the the Grateful Dead suppoert slot version is a much more powerful performance than the Boston Tea Party gig. But and I mean but strongly, this is the best version of Green Menalisihi, that I've found. Only just the other day, having worn out my original LP. Beautiful performance. So awesome to fins another to appreciate and to compare and contrast. By far, imhon, the greatest Peter Green & Fleetwood mac track. I am a big fan of raw performance, hence my reasoning for this track. :)
I'm a Peter Green fan and all and this is great but I've always been more partial to Hendrix myself. Like machine gun live at the filmore east. You said to share if I heard anything like it...nothing beats this IMHO ruclips.net/video/l2vmm9hGwJM/видео.html
@@tomasom4497 Hi, its blocked for me sadly, but thanks. I've always loved Machine Gun live - in fact, I've always been surprised it doesn't get more credit as it is stunning.
I am blown away. Did not know that was Peter on bass. Also Mick’s a great drummer, he went in every direction Peter was going, outstanding performance !!!!!
I finally found it. This is the version I was looking for. It's leagues better than the Boston Tea Party album version. His lead guitar solo, and the bass solo on wah wah pedals. This is the true freakout version.
I just heard this song for the first time about a week ago and I can honestly say I'm pissed this song has been around my whole life and I've missed out on the joy of listening to it until now.
+scroggs56 I completely feel your pain. Only came across this two years ago. But it only gets better once you're aware. So so so many versions of this track. Check out Green's solo track "Slabo Day". Just guitar and purely sublime.
I've had the bootleg with this song since the 80s, been rocking to it ever since. Boston Tea Party 1970 has a longer version on the back end but Green's solo isn't as good as this one.
Live April 9th 1970, Paris Theatre, London recorded by BBC radio. The entire BBC broadcast is out now on vinyl, as well as; 'Live at The Roundhouse Chalk Farm' April 1970. Peter had given in his notice by this point, the imfamous 'Munich incident occurred on 22nd/23rd March 1970, with Peter giving his notice to quit shortly afterwards. BBC recorded many live performances at that venue, including; Deep Purple, and Motorhead.
The only cover of this that comes close to doing it justice is Arthur Brown's Kingdom Comes Version but no one beat this & without Peter Green I simply can't acknowledge Fleetwood Mac as what it was as it obviously had a massive regression after their leader, lead guitarist, songwriter & singer left.
Agreed. They became a boring stadea pop band of bland insignificance.Rumors was so over produced it would be banned by the food authority for being over refined if it was classified as food. Keep the faith!
Lucky enough to hear 'Friday Rock Show' live on BBC in 1970. Searched in vain for this 15 minute version with the bass coda for about 40 years with only my cassette recording (ugh!) for consolation. Thank you djw612 and RUclips.
I dont know . Both are great. I heard some were. It sopoussed to be even a better one, some wher I have been looking for it for quite a time. Excuse my bad englsich :)
So the video footage spliced in toward the end is of the band's arrival in Europe just before Peter purportedly cracked up at the commune in Germany somewhere. The Bader-Meinhof dude and his supermodel girlfriend Uschi Whatshername cast as the villians, the Green Manalishi. I'm curious how long after this event, Peter kept his incomparable skills... how long was the the path to the decrepitude of his latter solo work.
I absolutely love this song always wondered why I'm a big Judas Priest fan never knew they redid the song always thought it was an original my mistake love Fleetwood Mac
Peter Greens spirituality dominated Fleetwood Mac & only Danny understood what was really going on with the master. Peter Green, your star will shine longer than the sun!~

I like the Boston one better.
Some music resonates in your gut and spreads to the rest of your body. You feel it more than hear it. This is that.
I can't listen to the non Peter Green Fleetwood Mac. Compared to the brightest star in the night sky Peter Green imo Fletwood Mac died when he left.
Great version, have listened to over and over. Can't get enough
Me too. I listen to it a couple of times a month. It's so damn good.

GREEN GOD
Really into the emotion of these tunes!
Totally. Some sadness being expressed in his choice of notes..
Thanks for the upload. This just blow my mind, it's even better then version on Boston tea party vol 1.
Yep way better :-)

Wow. Just wow.
is peter green playing lead on this??? the guitar solo is amazing, 3:45 sounds sick

wicked but I still consider the 1970 warehouse in new Orleans the opus of this song

Peter Green is probably rolling in his grave on Judas Ps version. I hate it.
Was he using a Fender VI six string bass guitar in the solo?
See comment above by Colin
Yep.
yep! Frampton had to be majorily influenced by this
Interesting. I was surprised at how tasty and unusual Framptons solos were. Found a blog that explained it, odd jazz modes or summat.
thought i was trippin , got so lost in this . . .
Billy Gibbons, Kirk Hammet (playing “Greeny”) and Mick🥁 Nailed this classic live.
When? Is it on RUclips?
Peter soloing this time haha
Wish the recording better. Because this is amazing.

Oh, and the 'mongy emcee' was the legendary Tommy Vance!
Martyn I'm fairly sure it wasn't, he had a very different, lighter, higher voice - I had the entire gig taped off the radio.
Judas Priest sings it awesome too!
