John and Mick in the zone. If anyone ever doubts mick's ability, play them this. Peter, Danny, Jeremy, John, and Mick, the original and best Fleetwood Mac.

I don't doubt it- but I heard Mick say, in a later inverview, that he preferred (though he loved original setup) latter Fleetwood Mac. I did not detect flaw in his speech pattern however I just do wonder now, what he truly thinks of the original Mac and the sound, and talent, and quality of it all! Not "oh I think it's better now". I don't want it to be a comparison (which btw on stage Nicks just stinks, now).

Agreed. Mick Fleetwood is hugely underrated. The Mac came to play our blues club in 67 I think it was, where I was playing bass in the resident band. He was the first drummer I had seen who could play a double shuffle.I was mesmirised!

Thanks to John Peel I found this band very early on when Jeremy did most of the vocals. I only saw them live once on 16th October 1969 in “Green’s Playhouse” Glasgow where I was a student. I nicked the poster from the common room & had it on my Bedroom Wall for years, sadly lost now. They played live better than on record. Sad Peter & Danny died too young.

Not too many cats with the chops to pull off a jam like this. I've played in bands that tried to cover this and it's a lot harder than it sounds. The way Kirwan and Green both shine AND stay out of each other's way is a superb example of improvisational musicianship. Not to mention the persuasive, driving foundation provided by messrs McVie and Fleetwood.

Just discovered this six-year-old post and so glad to find it! Thank you! I think they might have played this to open their set at a little dance hall called the Sound Factory in Sacramento in 1968 or 69. Can't be sure because memory fails on details. I think it was their first USA tour, or at least to California. They looked so young...around my age at the time (19) after a year in the Air Force and just before going to southeast Asia. I was surprised how informal they were and wearing jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. The first thing Peter said was something like "We're a bit nervous, do you mind if we jam a little to loosen up?"
Years later after buying all their U.S. albums (up to and including Future Games) I grew to love "Searching For Madge" (edited version on Then Play On) but only more recently started to believe they might have jammed on it to start that show. Which, by the way, wasn't even a full house in a smallish venue. I had just started to learn to play guitar...didn't realize then what a treasured memory it would be! Wish I could bring up more details on my brain's hard drive...haha. But I do recall them starting slow and eventually building to this same hard charging pace and multiple guitar duels. Just got chills thinking about it. Sorry for the long ramble.

Fleetwood Mac brought a little light, wonder and humor into a period of obscurity and weariness in my life. Listening to it many years later, my sensitivity and admiration I felt for it grew. A difficult listening at first, he lends the orchestral direction of his flayed intelligence, until he draws you inevitably into his universe. Each listening reveals a little more of its mystery, its magic, this work becomes ineluctably timeless “Imperial”🌷

In 1968 and '69 I was a student University of Manchester I'd been listening to Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield; Steve Katz; Eric Clapton; Otis Rush. Me mate suggested I give a listen to Fleetwood Mac. The guitarist was amazing... Peter Green had all the delicate nuance, unexpected changes, and power of Clapton on Beano. At the time I didn't think anyone could ever match Clapton's Blues guitar mastery. And to this day, they are the Janus of Blues Rock guitarists. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Right? Sickest tone ever, and there's nothing to it. Literally just a guitar into an amp. The tone sounds so good because their PLAYING is so good. For a period they had Orange amps and later Fender amps. No pedals. They turn the amps up LOUD and then use the guitar's volume knob to dial it back. Their flawless technique and vibrato is the result of years of playing along with blues records. Literally the only way you can get that good. You're not born with it.

The band are firing on all cylinders here and thanks for the download. Peter plays with his heart, head, his fingers and a Higher Power. During the British Blues Boom of the 1960's Peter showed his superior feel, tone and understanding of playing slow enough to feel every note and yet add to the balance of the song. He did not feel it necessary to stand out as the guitar God but a member of a band, his lack of ego made for a better overall sound, each band member felt and was part of the finalized product. Even though Peter Green past on his music will comfort us. RIP Peter

I got the muscles, just never played this tune. I mention that simply because I've heard a few bands mangle this beyond recognition attempting to cover it. For a bassist this sounds like a cool pocket to get into and just groove. Had a chance to play "Crossroads" with 4 hot guitarists who understood ensemble playing and how to stay out of each other's way. As much fun as is humanly possible standing up fully clothed. And if you like Frisell and McMurtry you either have serious chops yourself, whether listening and/or playing.

In all the FM recordings I've heard and the 3 times I've seen them live, rarely is he high in the mix, but man does he create a foundation. Simply stunning, and I had the joy of witnessing them at that time. An experience that has lasted my lifetime. No one ever did it as well.
