It's not just a pot-stew of jammin' & licks either. The Guitars don't crowd out each other or the band. There's still space for the listener to hear everything. Delightful.
In 1968 and '69 I was a student University of Manchester I'd been listening to Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield; Steve Katz; Eric Clapton; Otis Rush. Me mate suggested I give a listen to Fleetwood Mac. The guitarist was amazing... Peter Green had all the delicate nuance, unexpected changes, and power of Clapton on Beano. At the time I didn't think anyone could ever match Clapton's Blues guitar mastery. And to this day, they are the Janus of Blues Rock guitarists. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

@@ScooterPAK: Fleetwood mac wasn't as commercially successful in the 60's as they were in the mid 70's. However, i appreciated their music more in the blues based 60's. Sorry to hear about peter green's passing.
This never fails to astonish. The extraordinary freedom of Peter Green's playing in the tight structure of the piece, and of course his total control, the tone he produced in all registers. Genius.
What an awesome jam session. My favorite FWM cut. I wonder if there is any video of them playing this. Mick Fleetwood was just dynamic on the drums in this. You can recognize Danny Kirwan's sound on guitar. I have this on the 3 CD set Men of the World Peter Green is one of the greatest guitarists.
To all the people, that don't get Mick's brilliance on drums: This whole thing here should show his abilities christal- clear... Creative drum work, complementing rather than only holding the groove..Musicality, groove... Shuffles, sharp and precise, than loose, what it's needed, he does it, and does it on point..
Right? Sickest tone ever, and there's nothing to it. Literally just a guitar into an amp. The tone sounds so good because their PLAYING is so good. For a period they had Orange amps and later Fender amps. No pedals. They turn the amps up LOUD and then use the guitar's volume knob to dial it back. Their flawless technique and vibrato is the result of years of playing along with blues records. Literally the only way you can get that good. You're not born with it.
I missed an entire lifetime of extraordinary music. Not sure what I was doing or where I was, but I f'&&d up real bad. While I tuned out top 40 AM in Detroit and tuned in WABX to hear real music, I missed real music. This is...extraordinary.
no man ..youre too hard on yaself..but ya i dig..feel the same way when I "discover" someone new to me.if i had to pick one decade..one era it would be here..in the 1960's IMHO the best decade for music. try FOREVER CHANGES by LOVE. Give a listen
First the rhythm riff and the drums create a backbone and a pocket, and then that fabulous climactic guitar riff at 10+ delivers the Mike Tyson uppercut that puts the lights out. Yep.
absolutely their best album, i think if they reased this as a double album, with this recording as an entire side the album would have been legendary outside of Peter Green Fans
I've never heard this until now. This was brilliant from start to finish. So spot on and coherent, every part, no one ever put a foot wrong. There was some serious telepathy going on with those lads on that night. The guitar tones were so sweet, lots of subtle double stop comps from PG. Such great interaction and fluidity. Thanks for posting this Gem. I will return.
I am blessed to have just discovered this post. I’ve listened to Then Play On ever since it was released. One of my five favorite albums of all time. But now is the first time I’m hearing the live jam. Holy Cr**‼️ What a band 👏👏👏 Everyone’s in the Zone 😎
This comes from the "Then Play On" (1969) sessions . A great extended jam. One note, the "Wee One" Jeremy Spencer did not play on the sessions for this album. So what we are hearing is a massive guitar duel between Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. This is great stuff!
I wish it didn't take someone's passing for me to start listening to this stuff, Peter Green was amazing, the whole band was amazing, and Mick Fleetwood must be included in my ever expanding list of top ten drummers 🎸🎸🎸
The band are firing on all cylinders here and thanks for the download. Peter plays with his heart, head, his fingers and a Higher Power. During the British Blues Boom of the 1960's Peter showed his superior feel, tone and understanding of playing slow enough to feel every note and yet add to the balance of the song. He did not feel it necessary to stand out as the guitar God but a member of a band, his lack of ego made for a better overall sound, each band member felt and was part of the finalized product. Even though Peter Green past on his music will comfort us. RIP Peter
I got the muscles, just never played this tune. I mention that simply because I've heard a few bands mangle this beyond recognition attempting to cover it. For a bassist this sounds like a cool pocket to get into and just groove. Had a chance to play "Crossroads" with 4 hot guitarists who understood ensemble playing and how to stay out of each other's way. As much fun as is humanly possible standing up fully clothed. And if you like Frisell and McMurtry you either have serious chops yourself, whether listening and/or playing.
Agreed. I saw them do Madge for a half-hour at Fillmore East, late night show, about 1970. Arguably the most memorable and mesmerizing live performance I've ever seen. I guess I have to rely on my memory...
"Mick, what kind of music did you play when the band first got together?" "Well, Stevie, it was quite a bit different from what you and Lindsey are used to. For one thing, we had two and sometimes three guitarists back then." "What did it sound like?" "I'll tell you what. Let me put this old tape on, and you can hear for yourself."
Exceptional narrative peonwarrior! BB King is obviously a tremendous influence on Peter and BB King is quoted as saying that Peter Green is the only one that gave him the cold sweats... Major accolades from the original! I couldn't agree with you more!
This is the REAL FM that I like! stumbled on this channel looking for the Searching for Madge that was on the album I no longer have. This is just plain great. I love their early stuff.
Thanks so much for uploading this, Peon. It's fantastic. Agree with others who think it's better than what actually made it on to "Then Play On". Gotta wonder who was calling that shot. ALSO - I don't think Mick and John get enough credit as an absolutely awesome rhythm section. They are bedrock...just keep picking 'em up and layin' 'em down. What drive. This made the hair on my arms stand UP! Cure for the common cold if you got one. What rock n roll used to be all about. Thanks again. Absolutely dynamite.
Tom Murray The people "calling the shots" were Peter Green and Danny Kirwan. It isn't an example of musicians forced to play certain music by record company executives.
Tom Murray back when l had Then Play On (also had heard the band playing on same bill w/ others at the Filmore around 1969). unless you had a reel to reel you got what records you could pretty much.
Last couple weeks for no specific reason I've listened to "Future Games" almost daily. McVie's playing started to stand out for me through these repeated hearings. In all the FM recordings I've heard and the 3 times I've seen them live, rarely is he high in the mix, but man does he create a foundation. Because he and Mick are there always to serve the music and the people in the front of the band, they've had enduring artistic success.
this is real cool, love hearing this sort of free jamming style, which was a huge part of the early Mac's magic...absolutely fantastic...thanks for making this available, great sound too!

It melts the heart alright, The best, 2022 and still nothing to match his genius.
Well said. My sentiments exactly.
The fact that he’s not in some heaven looking down makes me miss this guy even more.
Mr Clapton, Mr Hendrix, take your seats at the back please. Unreal stuff from P.G and the band. Sonically this is absolutely staggering, rhythmically it's monstrous and the tones? Holy f**k. Doubt I'll hear a better piece of music in my life. I only found this tonight and I've been a fan for years. Bliss beyond words. ✨ ❤
WoW!!! Fighting & Searching for Madge on the album then play on, I have the original album! But man! There was a truck load missing from the then play on original recording, this is so good! I am gasping!! Never ever will this be repeated in any way, shape or form! Gonna take me a while to come down from this incredible jam!!
Jimmy Page sat at Peter Green's feet.
It's not just a pot-stew of jammin' & licks either. The Guitars don't crowd out each other or the band. There's still space for the listener to hear everything. Delightful.
I'm 38 and for me green is a god,!good car music on the highway😅
O
RIP Peter Green. This just rocks like nothing else.
Hard Road by Mayall features peter green and the rythym section, predating Mac.
-Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
this song starts out like a locomotive, slowly chugging along then picking up momentum until it's roaring down the tracks full steam ahead..... then finally slowing down at the end of a thrilling ride.
Roald Arntzen: peter green is great on this track, but the rhythm section of john mcvie and mick fleetwood is excellent too.
Well said...
@@midnightrider7648 people underestimated mick and john cause of the "70s mac" and their aor vibe but they were veterans of the british blues scene. So they knew their s**t lol
@@ScooterPAK:
Fleetwood mac wasn't as commercially successful in the 60's as they were in the mid 70's. However, i appreciated their music more in the blues based 60's. Sorry to hear about peter green's passing.
You're right -that 24 minute "Rattlesnake Shake" is just crazy good!!
This may be the best jam I've ever heard.
Only Allman Bros approaches n matches this amazing outburst...On another level from likes of jam bands like Grateful Dead, etc
Yes it is!!!
I agree. This is just unreal!
So awesome that this was released to the public a generation after excerpts had debuted on And Then Play On. THIS is PLAYING ON!!
Cedric Awspam do you know where it can be downloaded?
This never fails to astonish. The extraordinary freedom of Peter Green's playing in the tight structure of the piece, and of course his total control, the tone he produced in all registers. Genius.
This a perfect example of Peters fire and Dannys ice, These two guitarists were made to play together. This is beautiful to listen to.
They were amazing together. I walk to this on repeat and lose myself.
i have ways described Peter green's playing as cold fire, its so deliciously cool blooded
What about Mick Fleetwood's drumming? Incredible as well!
This was my favorite song on the Then Play On album. This is the unedited version on steroids. Thanks so much.
Credited to John McVie and Mick Fleetwood but written by Peter Green with backing by Danny Kirwan.
What an awesome jam session. My favorite FWM cut. I wonder if there is any video of them playing this. Mick Fleetwood was just dynamic on the drums in this. You can recognize Danny Kirwan's sound on guitar.
I have this on the 3 CD set Men of the World
Peter Green is one of the greatest guitarists.
Absolutely, and I would add John McVie to the list that made this particular recording one of the best in rock history.
Very much this.
I am far far from a musician but this drum work caught my attention
I feel like I'm flying when I listen to this!
I would love to know the person that gave this a thumbs down.....that is just pure raw open talent....
A Rumours fan, no doubt.
babysgottalocomotive
hahaha !
Obviously an idiot or maybe just deaf!
SOME FOLKS MIGHT FIND IT REPETITIVE......................................
These guitar tones!
By the way what kind of pedals they use?
None!! The tones are just cranked tube amps and master guitar playing & technique
It's just never too late ! You do have to listen to FM live @ Boston Tea Party, song called - Rattlesnake Shake (24mn long) ;-)
no man ..youre too hard on yaself..but ya i dig..feel the same way when I "discover" someone new to me.if i had to pick one decade..one era it would be here..in the 1960's IMHO the best decade for music. try FOREVER CHANGES by LOVE. Give a listen
***** Imagine if you never found it at all. A gift from the world
***** I've had a radio in my ear almost 50 years, and I know I haven't come close to hearing it all yet. Enjoy these new discoveries.
Everybody has missed an extraordinary life time of music out there because there is so much extraordinary music out there.
I've been listening to the TPO version(s) of this since 1971 and the riff at 10.15 STILL makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Right after 10:09 is my favorite part of the jam as well, Tim.
First the rhythm riff and the drums create a backbone and a pocket, and then that fabulous climactic guitar riff at 10+ delivers the Mike Tyson uppercut that puts the lights out. Yep.
This always made me feel like I was FLYING!
Love this Jam..this later became 2 songs on Then Play On.."Searching for Madge" and "Fighting for Madge"..Then Play On..the best Mac album🎸🎶🎶
absolutely their best album, i think if they reased this as a double album, with this recording as an entire side the album would have been legendary outside of Peter Green Fans
Yeah Then Play On was the best which is saying something given the quality of the albums
👍 ABSOLUTELY!!! 👍 It's classic, timeless.
Man I Love Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.... Great Jam!....
Saludos desde Argentina!..
I just love Peter Green ... this is flipping awesome... thanks for uploading this
Thanks for uploading this treasure.

I have never seen this Album or heard these song. I am blown away! A Thousand wishes just answered. Thank-You!
Pappa Michael First time I heard this album... I was also so blown away and I thought : it's a duty to share this gem on RUclips! :-)
Everyone is in your debt that you have allowed us to enjoy this fine recording. Is there more of the same to be had perhaps?
best music ever!!
WOW. I'm blown away at this recording. It brings it all back and I'm so glad I was there back then. Love Peter G.!
Very Very great upload! Thx for this man! Never heard this 1 before..wow! Gotta love Peter Green's genius mind. 1 of the best ever without a doubt!
Go Mick on the lead in. Good stuff. I want this album! Thanks for keepig this magical music alive.
Some of the most amazing blues rock ever played, Perter was the MAN before the LSD fried his brain
Peter God.unbelievable.
I will return.
thank you very much for sharing. wonderful years
28 down thumbs came here thinkin' they were going to hear a goat sing...............you got a God of the '59 Les Paul instead
reversed polarité neck pickup and great hands helps
Classic

Ah yes fans of Miss Nicks have been quick on tbe upside down digit.
@@pressureworks yeah 90% of them would say ‘Peter who?’
Kind of just comes ALIVE! Wow!!
Wow, this is an amazing recording, PAG at his peak. Thanks peonwarrior.
you're welcome! :)
I wish it didn't take someone's passing for me to start listening to this stuff, Peter Green was amazing, the whole band was amazing, and Mick Fleetwood must be included in my ever expanding list of top ten drummers 🎸🎸🎸
Doesn’t it need to stop at 10? : )
I expect Bonham no1eh?
@@leebutton1062 Bonham or Moon !
this is just so bloooody brilliant! never ever have before, not since heard this brilliant a jam!
Magical...pure intense magic!
What a great band they were
WTF 😳🙀that’s some laser-like playing right here. Peter and Danny are like Jedis on guitar
some of the best music ever recorded
some of the best music ever made
quite possibly the definitive music for the late 60's
@@PhukIT1865puts Woodstock to shame.
Thankyou for this upload I personally agree with your write up I listen to various blues groups and I keep returning to pg,s fleet wood Mac.
RIP Peter
Well said I bloody well right, I might add
And that's how you make MUSIC!!!
SaBi NuKi: i agree. seems like it's become a lost art tho.
In my experience as a musician, maintaining a groove like that and for that long takes serious chops.
haha........really. give it some mo time youngblood..........maybe get some muscles on ya.......
And back in the day they had the chops, bloody awesome.
Merci beaucoup ...c est magistral , que de talent ,... juste , que de nos jours cela reste inégalé , musicalement c est la plus belle époque
Wow! This is the top, am blown away with such pure pleasure listening to this oh so beautiful gig!
OVER THE TOP!!! WOW!! so very powerful and strong driving riffs, bass and drums...that DO NOT MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE, do they?
They smoked it:) Would I love to see video of them playing this!
Agreed. I saw them do Madge for a half-hour at Fillmore East, late night show, about 1970. Arguably the most memorable and mesmerizing live performance I've ever seen. I guess I have to rely on my memory...
"Mick, what kind of music did you play when the band first got together?"
"Well, Stevie, it was quite a bit different from what you and Lindsey are used to. For one thing, we had two and sometimes three guitarists back then."
"What did it sound like?"
"I'll tell you what. Let me put this old tape on, and you can hear for yourself."
Now Stevie, do a line off my nut sack. OK Mick
What did it sound like? Kick ass, that's what!
dont see why it has to be either or mac 2 made some great music too . all be it more commercial . green was a blues genius of course
@@twelve-t4c truth both are incredible iterations of one if the most important groups of 60s 70s

Exceptional narrative peonwarrior!
BB King is obviously a tremendous influence on Peter and BB King is quoted as saying that Peter Green is the only one that gave him the cold sweats...
Major accolades from the original!
I couldn't agree with you more!
absolutely amazing musicianship ❤
Epic, amazing jam. Thank you for this treasure.
just listen to them burn, didn't know this was in existence, many many thanks peon
This is the REAL FM that I like! stumbled on this channel looking for the Searching for Madge that was on the album I no longer have. This is just plain great. I love their early stuff.
The two "Madge" tracks were my favs from the album. Glad I found this
the REAL MAC!!! Gr8!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanx, man!!
Great song to play guitar along to
Thanks so much for uploading this, Peon.
The people calling the shots on "Then Play On" had no concept of what PG and Fleetwood Mac were capable of, that being said it's still a great album
Sonhouse77 Ditto, and especially ditto about the rhythm section...haven't heard them pound this hard before. Rockin'
Hi everyone, if you like the song make sure to check out this one also : Fleetwood Mac - The Vaudeville Years - Underway [Full Version] (Rare)
Awesome
Thanks. Love this. Then play on got worn out on vynil (or was that on acid?)
So happy to be able to say I heard this live back in the day. Thankyou for archiving this magic!❤️
Simply stunning, and I had the joy of witnessing them at that time. An experience that has lasted my lifetime. No one ever did it as well.
Isn't it kind of weird that in such a short time these guys have left a huge mark in music . Imagine if they were together for atleast 20 years...
Thats what great musician tend to havr in common they only last for a short time. Like a firework
this is real cool, love hearing this sort of free jamming style, which was a huge part of the early Mac's magic...absolutely fantastic...thanks for making this available, great sound too!

stumbled across this free flowing bluesy blast...thanks for posting this...how good are they... how good , phenomenal... 17 mins of delight and brilliance...
I see what you did!

i can see the maniacal look in mick fleetwood's dinner plate sized eyes as he pours his heart out into pounding on those drums during this session.
