After replacing a variety of ac components, I took my truck to an auto mechanic and he couldn't find the reason for the ac clutch not engaging. Been driving it for quite some time with the inside windows fogging over, not fun. So today, saw your video, replaced the short oem vac lines at the junction you pointed out (they were dry rotted) and was able to get ac clutch engagement and full heat with air movement from the defrost vents to the floor vents! Thanks so much for the tip!
Was having the same problem with just air coming out the defrosters . Figured I'd be having to tear the dash apart to find the problem, but then I watched your video and found that when I changed the fuel filter I must have knocked the line off . Thank you for posting this and saving me the aggravation !!
After searching video after video and dreading removing the Blend Door motor (huge job) I found your video and within 20 minutes the problem was solved finding a small 1/8" vacuum line under the hood broken. Patched it with a temporary rubber sleeve. Very thankful for your post!!!
Thank u. I wasn’t think a vacuum line under the hood. U helped me out a lot I appreciate it there’s a storm coming I needed this fixed. Wasted my day changed the thermostat. Didn’t realize the vent controls weren’t working till after
The vacume line for the heater controls on this 99 dakota had been cut inside the engine compartment...i used a couple inches of rubber tubing to splice the line back together....the heat controls work now and there's heat now too...thanks brother..👍
The vacuum was exactly my problem. Not only old dry rotted leaking hoses but further along that hard plastic tubing manifold along the firewall it had separated and needed splicing together with some small diameter vacuum hose. Replacing the dry rot and rejoining of the manifold allowed vacuum build-up and regaining control of a/c output vents!
You have a new subscriber!! I had no idea where to start, RUclips rocks when it comes to things like this. This definitely save a $175 diagnostic fee I'm sure would have been charged by almost any shop. Mine had become disconnected and had not been working for some time. Hope it fixes my cruise control too.
Bro my wife just came in and said the ac only blows out of the defroster . So I watched this video and boom it’s fixed , thank you for the heads up , so cal heat is nothing nice in July
With hindsight I should have checked vacuum lines first; however after fixing the same issue on my son's 2004 RAM with the HeaterTreater kit I bought the blend door kit for my 2001. After installing the HeaterTreater blend door connector I realized my mistake. Found this video and then immediately found a cracked vacuum line in the engine compartment about 3" from where the line entered the firewall near the AC lines. I was able to make the repair by sliding new vacuum hose over this small vacuum line.
I Love you man! I had the same problem on a 2002 Diesel. I followed the vacuum line around to the front driver's side of the engine where there is a vacuum pump. Old cracked boot was the problem. Thanks!!
I just want to say, thank you so much for sharing this information!!! You just saved my day!! Been driving a solid black cummins for 2 months with no ac and I couldn’t take it anymore, and because of this content I was able to get everything working like normal again!
On the second gen rams the hvac unit has doors that use a vacuum motor to position the door; the vacuum motor responsible for air coming out of the defroster vents all the time is the one mounted on the far left of the unit there are just 2 ways for it to fail, loss of vacuum or mechanically when a small plastic pin breaks off which is what happened in my case. The fix was easy, I drilled a hole in the door arm and put in a bolt and nut, it's fixed forever; at the far right side of the unit is the door for fresh air or recirc air. When the A/C is in max A/C mode the air is being recirced. As for temp control, it will control the blend door either with a mechanical cable or a stepping motor. Hope somebody finds this info helpful
Because of your video I found out the vacuum line was missing. Replaced the vacuum line. Ac ducts now work correctly. This also fixed my cruise control. 2001 3500 diesel.
Wow Im having the exact same issue with mine and couldn't figure it out. Did what you said in the video and come to find out that that vacuum line is completely broken off 😂 Gonna replace it and hopefully that's the only problem. Thanks man!

I have a 3.9L 01. Saw a broken vacuum line by the passenger side firewall, is this the one your talking about? And couldnt figure out where it leads to…
My problem is that my ac blows fine, but when I am accelerating my ac will switch itself to coming out the defrost vents, until I am not accelerating and then it goes back to the top vents. I asked people and no one I know has a clue what to check.....driving me insane!
You have a vacuum leak. Check your vacuum tank for a leak. The vacuum tank builds and saves vacuum for when you have minimal vacuum under acceleration.
That's crazy, I would have never thought of vacuum lines for something electrical, thank you for the post, I will check that out. I had already replaced the temperature control panel new about a year ago so I don't think it's out that soon and I also put in a new fan motor too at that same time so I know it can't be those things
Pretty sure this is my problem. Had a shop replace the brake booster on my 97 12 valve and ever since I got it back it only blows defrost. I’ll check this tomorrow.
My truck is a 2000 dodge ram Laramie slt quad cab long bed 1500 it has ac works good, and the heater works good and strong as well but through the vents in the cluster bezel and the passenger side dash pad vents, but when I put it on defrost it doesn't work heat still comes out of dash bezel vents and the passenger side dash pad vents..
I would check the vacuum lines on the engine side first, if there are no issues pull the climate controls and see if the issue is in the controls or dash.
My 2005 Dakota defrost and floor vents worked but not the dash board, I beat the shit out of my dash, took apart a few vacuum lines and blew in them. Advanced auto employs morons so I came to you tube. It is now working and blowing out the vents ! My hand hurts so don’t punch your dash
I have a 96 1500 gasser and i found out that my vacuum line was completely unplugged. For the guys who also have one it will be on the left side of the engine bay right by the fire wall.
My 98 At a stop, the AC blows cold as it should When I take off- it stops blowing through the front and starts blowing up through the defrost vents Once I let off the gas I can hear a vent flap smack close and the AC air returns to blowing through the front vents H E L P ! ! ! !
as a second gen owner the last thing we want to do is pull the dash apart
Ain't that the truth
Yeah my dash is perfect but took a chip out of my bezel taking it off
I need to replace my heater core and I’m getting more and more nervous
I still have to pull it off the rubber hose cracked right at firewall
I have no dash😢

Thank you sir for this, mine was completely cracked, 2 min fix because of your wisdom, thanks!
You saved my ass with time and money! Can’t thank you enough for diagnosing my issue, appreciate it brother 😅
My vent selector just stopped working. Thank you for the video! I'll definitely be checking the vacuum line first!
Definitely, this is a very common problem

Jim. Thanks for confirming the finding I just discovered. The line is missing and I was wondering if it was suppose to connect to the vacuum pump.
Awesome! Thanks, glad I picked to watch your video first.
30 second fix, line came apart, didn't realize.
Glad it helped.

Great info
Thank you for taking to time to help.

Thank you man! I would have just took my whole dash apart and the problem was just a disconnected vacuum line.
Exactly what was wrong with mine! Thanks a bunch!
Glad it helped
Thanks!!!!!! I appreciate you doing this you damn sure saved me a couple hundred bucks sure enough it was a vacuum line
Glad it helped

Thanks, man...! Fixed my 2001 after checking line.
Thanks man! I must've knocked one of my lines loose when I changed my fuel filter

You ever figure out the Cruise control I’m having that and this problem right now

I’ve never been more pissed but happy at the same time I didn’t even fix them yet I touched them and it fixed my problem now I gotta change them out
I found a vacuum leak and it's the hose leading inside to the cabin do I have to take apart the whole upper dash to fix it?
you saved my day....thanks for sharing this...you rule!
Glad it helped

Where does the end of the other side of that hose go to? Mine is missing

This worked for me! thanks!
Can somebody help me please???? The line that’s running inside the cab what does it run to???
Excellent! Worked for me. Thanks!
What would mine be then, only turns on at max ac and only come out hot and from the top/defrost
I would check the vacuum lines on the engine side first, if there are no issues pull the climate controls and see if the issue is in the controls or dash.
I had a vacuum leak on my 99 Ram 3500 diesel. The line was cracked where it passes through the firewall. We spliced it back together.
Thanks man fixed mine!
no shit. My line was disconnected under the hood wow thank you
