    My fiddle leaf was basically an almost dead stick … I started putting cut up bananas (with skin on) and egg peels inside the soil. Lo and behold…2-3 months later it came back to life and started growing teeny tiny leaves. Fast forward, 2 years later… it is a one healthy bush! I even propagated it bc it grew so many branches.

    Hi Claire!!
    After a severe root trimming on my previously healthy fiddle leaf fig tree, it looked as though the tree was dying.
    She dropped a good amount of her leaves and the other leaves hung listlessly for quite awhile. She is in an outside courtyard, in the shade but lots of reflected light.
    I grieved that I had killed my lovely fiddle leaf and I reached out to you. You gave me hope and calmly told me to keep the tree moist. I had been about to throw her out, but I patiently kept misting her several times each day. I also misted the soil each time I misted her leaves. I ordered some of your fiddle leaf soil and vitamins and gave her regular vitamin doses.
    After a couple of weeks, which seemed like ages, one of her leaves started to perk up, then a new leaf grew, then all of her leaves started perking up.
    Now, she is the most beautiful fig tree!! She has branched out on top, and much fuller than before. She is absolutely lovely, full and healthy!!
    Thank you so much for your advice and for giving me hope in the midst of my fiddle leaf crisis!!
    Blessings,
    Nancy Telling

      Nancy, girl!! This is what i'm going through right now and i came looking for video help on youtube. I just chopped off a lot of roots . They were twirled in circles in the pot, so i thought "this is too much". Stripped her of all the old "spongy" soil from her walmart days, and added regular dirt... ALL of her leaves have flopped. She looks bad. But they haven't dropped. This has all happened over this past weekend. I keep her in my classroom so that could also be an issue, the environment.
      I need help! What kind of soil or fertilizer are you using? Should i water more (2x a week?) to wake her up?

    • @nancytelling8166
      @nancytelling8166 Год назад +2

      @@circe... ~ I changed all the dirt in the pot to the fiddle leaf fig potting soil that is sold on this channel. I put some planting rocks under the soil in a pot with good drainage. Regular soil can keep their roots too wet. I also gave her fiddle leaf vitamins once a week with water, kept the soil moist and misted her every day. She liked having a good drink every day, but not having her roots sitting in it. All of her leaves fell off except one. I kept nursing her - kept her moist. My friend said ,”get rid of it, it’s dead”. But then she started growing leaves and she is more beautiful than ever!! I did all the nurturing outside in summer, then brought her in when we were going to get frost. They don’t like to be moved much. She is still doing great, but not needing as much water. One thing I learned~ not to freak out. Give her some time and I do suggest getting the fiddle leaf soil. Mist her and keep her soil moist. I also gave her a little citric acid in water once a week to encourage her roots to drink. Let me know how it goes. Now I need to figure out what’s wrong with my lime tree!!

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant

      If the cutting has a node and you removed it from the plant, you should be able to place it in a vessel of water and wait for roots to grow. Then plant in soil when you have multiple roots that are more than 1-2" long.

    Great help Claire! My Fiddle leaf is improving and actually getting taller. I wonder if I should stake it it or cut it back at one of the nodes. It's very wobbly. Thanks again and i love your channel and Fiddle Leaf health advice. I also have a new leaf coming since I move him to the brighter spot in my living room. I transplanted with your recommended soil and used the root stimulator. I also use you plant food on all my house plants weekly and they are happier! Mahalo!

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  3 года назад

      Sounds like you are caring for it very well! If you continue to gently wiggle your tree regularly, it won't need a stake. The trunk will begin to thicken and grow straighter. If you cut it back or pinch any new growth off, branching will occur at that spot. Happy growing!

    I had one that was growing decent and i went on vacation. Before i left i watered. Normally 2 weeks was fine and it didnt need to be watered before that. When i came back it had dropped about 10 leaves and the rest were droppy. It was completely dry. Not a bit of mousture. It had become somewhat root bound, that with the temp increase and me not running a humidifier daily (i think a humidy level of about 60 kept the soil moist longer than the normal 30 the room has) had caused my fig to drink up the water super fast and in turn had gone (from what i can guess) most of the just over 2 weeks with no water.
    Im hoping to save it because it was so lovely before.

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  Год назад

      It will bounce back! Make sure it doesn't get dry again and if the soil has become hydrophobic (water immediately drains out the bottom and is not soaking into the soil) you can soak the soil / root ball thoroughly and then water again when the top inches of soil are dry. You are caring for your plant well, it will completely come back with your same care routine now that you are home. Happy Growing!

      As you've said, I will replant to have a drier soil & really look for a place inside my house & put a light on it. It's been months now, no sun at all.
      Anyway do you think it'll grow leaves again? Should I cut that long branch with no leaves now? Pls help😩

    Hi Claire, thank you for the tips, mine is root bound so I am glad to hear I do not have to repot because it's already in a decent sized one. I just ordered your potting soil. Many Fiddles have dark green leaves but mine are more of a lighter green. It is by a big picture window that gets plenty of light. I have fed it your plant food every watering for over a year and it's growing great so that's the only issue...any ideas how to get it that deep green color? (it's quite large, about 7 feet) Thanks!

      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  3 года назад +2

      Hi Linda, it sounds like your plant is very happy! Keep doing what you are doing, over time a more mature tree will have darker leaves. It may be the root bound system is not adequate absorbing the nutrients from the soil and our Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Food. Repotting is a great step and continue to use our Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Food at every watering. Happy growing!

    As instructed in this video, I had fertilized my fiddle leaf fig at every watering and I have burns in almost every leaf and I have damaged by Fiddleleaf fig and I’m trying to figure out how to salvage it, but I think that it needs to be known that there is a such thing as over fertilizing any plant, and the damage that that can cause

    I don’t want to do too much at once but I have a tree that I just did 3 notches in a few days ago and moved away from a heat vent today. Its “trunk” is skinny but it’s about 6 ft tall and it seems to need repotting based on how insecure it is in the pot (it needs stabilizing and can move around more than seems healthy). Thanks for the advice on going with a smaller pot, I suspect it would like that! I got the smart gravel already (and the beautiful trimming scissors) and now just need the new soil. Appreciate all your videos! 💚🙏🏼

    Hi Claire, I wrote to you about 3 wks ago. My plant had lost all the leaves and I was ☹. I took 4 cuttings from the stem, dipped each in root hormone and left them in water on window sill. Lo and behold they all have buds appearing on them including on the remaining stem in the main pot. I'm so happy😀. The 4 stems do not have any long roots, but beginnings of roots which look like white spots.
    1. Do I wait until the buds get much bigger and when the roots have grown out about 1cm or so and then plant them out or plant them now?
    2. The buds (leaves)on some of the stems are sitting in the water as I wait for the rooting to take place. Do I keep the buds above the water ie lose some of the water?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 года назад +1

      Great questions! Leave the cuttings in the water with the rooting hormone until you have multiple long roots formed. Then they can be planted in soil where you will want to keep the soil evenly moist for the first month to help the plant get established. Great job!

There is a lot of bare trunk, has lots of bare branches and only a handful of leaves at the top which is now getting too tall for the room - so it doesn't look great and I want to 'start again', can I chop the trunk back to a short stump to let it regrow again?

      This is kind of my issue too. It's a perfect storm of problems but I don't want to get rid of it. My daughter saw it and told me it looks like a helicopter. Two top leaves and one three foot long stem. 😩 A couple months ago, it was SOOOO lovely. I was waiting til this Spring to lop off the top to make the top a new cutting and get the bottom to start branching out. Then it started dropping leaves. WHAT? Now I have two leaves left and I'm looking on the internet for what to do. I tend to be an over-waterer, so I slacked off and I think the roots may be too dry now. Not sure what I did. About 6 months ago, the old pot fell off the moveable stand I had and broke, so I went and found a bigger pot, probably too big. So, now I need to maybe lop this one off like Claire told you, use a smaller pot and start all over again. 👍 At least I know i can try.

Make sure to keep it directly in front of and up against your window so that it has full access to the indirect light. Also, if you haven't already, water after repotting to ensure the soil and pot drain well. It should perk back up in a week or so. Happy Growing!

    Hi Claire, thank you for all of the wonderful info on your channel. I recently repotted my fiddle leaf fig tree because I was not convinced the soil it came in allowed for sufficient drainage. I am usually hesitant with repotting because I have been unsuccessful in the past. However, randomly I found 2 mushrooms going in the soil it came with so I was afraid the soil was holding on to too much moisture which would lead to root rot. I repotted using a mixture of cactus soil, peat moss, and perlite. After 3 days of repotting I noticed the leaves start to droop. It has now been a week since repotting and multiple leaves have started turning yellow and dropping. I had 8 leaves drop as I was inspecting all the leaves. I have read some info regarding transplant shock and figured that was what causing it, but have I now placed a death sentence on my tree? :( Any advice for this worried fiddle leave fig mom?

      Repotting can stress the plant but it will bounce back. Make sure it is sitting right in front of and up against your brightest window and water when the top inches of soil are dry and ensure the water drains well out the bottom drainage holes. My friend bought myself and me a FLF yesterday from a big box store yesterday. He took mine to his house and I brought it home this morning. They both have some brown spots (he likes to buy rescues for some reason) I understand you don’t want to water plants within the first few days so I haven’t but I’m sure he (Maxwell is his name ☺️) needs a good watering. Is this this right thing to do?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 года назад +1

      Congrats on your new plant! Most likely the brown spots are trauma to the leaves that have occurred when in the store and when it was transported home. It is best to water when the top inches of soil are dry. Water and ensure the soil and pot drain well out the bottom drainage holes. Keep the plant in front of and up against your brightest window to help it acclimate. Happy Growing!

    Great video. I plan to check out more of them as I picked up my first FLF from a big box store. 2 days after bringing it home the leaves started to turn brownish in the centers. The next day it got worse and they felt really dry/brittle. Now all the leaves are brown and brittle. I'll check the root size as I didn't do that. Should I give it a prune now or hold of and see if there is any new growth. I'm so bummed.

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 года назад +2

      It sounds like your plant may be thirsty if the leaves are becoming dry and crispy and dropping. Or it may have been exposed to too cold of temperatures during transport perhaps. That can also cause discoloration of the leaves. Make sure the soil is not compact and is able to absorb the water that you are using. Look at the pot and make sure the drainage holes are on the bottom and not the sides. If they are on the sides, I recommend repotting into a pot that has multiple holes on the bottom. Big Box stores have plants in pots with side holes because they water them so frequently.

I repotted it last week and a few days later all the leaves drooped and now I’ve lost almost all of them :(. Good question! Was it exposed to any colder temps recently? Make sure when you water the water is draining well out bottom drainage holes and wait to water again when the top inches of soil are dry. Also, fiddle leaf figs need a lot of light to survive. I recommend placing them directly in front of and up against your brightest window. Even when they are pulled back 1 foot away from the window, that is not enough light for them to thrive. Hi Claire, I have a ver tall fiddle leaf fig I bought online almost a year ago. It was a little bit damaged from shipping and was immediately repotted. It has been having very very slow new growth and at the beginning had many leafs drop. It seems to be stable now with some new leafs coming out. My question is, what do I do with all the brown leafs that were part of the plant when I got it? It’s like a 9’ plant and I feel it has more brown leafs than healthy and new leafs. Do I cut them? Do I left them be till they fall?

      Hi Emanuel, what a great question! I always recommend removing any leaves that are more than 50% damaged as they are no longer the best way for your plant to expend its energy. You can remove these leaves with sterile pruning shears and just remember not to remove more than 10% of the total amount of leaves of the plant so it does not go into shock. Would you think my fiddle leaf fig would be ok inside, in front of my sliding glass door that faces the west? Would that be too much sun?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant

      Hi Elaine, great question! West facing may get too much direct sunlight on the leaves in the afternoon which increases the risk of sunburn. A sheer curtain over the sliding glass door can turn that light indirect. South-facing windows get the longest duration of bright sunlight, so they make the ideal home for a fiddle leaf fig plant. Facing south, your plant will likely get over 8 hours per day of bright sun, but few direct harsh rays on its leaves. Happy Growing!

Just recently it started dropping all its leaves and the branches are very brittle! I notched in between and got white sap but a months later nothing has changed. The most leaves fall post watering. What could be going on?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  4 месяца назад

      Hello! It sounds like there may be a couple of things happening. Is the soil the original soil? It may be hydrophobic and not soaking and retaining any water that you are giving the plant. I recommend aerating the soil or if it has been over 2+ years, new soil is recommended. Plants will use up the nutrients from their soil within 1-2 years so it is best to have fresh, nutrient rich soil for the plant. Also, if it is in the same size pot, the plant can only grow as much as the root system. I recommend going up 2"-4" in pot size so the root system has more room to grow and support new branches and growth on top. Happy Growing!

      It definitely can regrow. I would place it in the sunniest spot you have in the house and water it when the top inches of soil are dry. Fertilize with Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Food every time you water and leave it be. It will regrow!

      Hi Dorian, yes cactus soil is a great medium to purchase for fiddle leaf figs. It helps aid in the draining process. A mixture of cactus soil and potting soil can be helpful for your plant. Happy Growing!

      Hi Trina, is the plant getting enough sunlight? It may be focusing its energy on the root system before new growth appears. Make sure you are watering when the top inches of soil are dry and it is right up against and in front of your brightest window for the most light.

I wish I could show you a picture of them.

    I planted mine with my babies placenta. Do you think this is why it’s dying? I also live in the desert so at this time of year I’m worried if I put it outside it’ll be too cold. What’s your advice?

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 года назад

      I am not sure how placenta would affect the soil and if you noticed a change after using it, I would suspect it did not help the balance of the nutrients and acid in the soil of the plant. If it dips below 60 outside, I do not recommend moving it. Cold damage can set it quick and your leaves will turn dark brown / black and possibly drop. Keep your plant as close to your brightest window as possible and remember to water when the top inches of soil are dry. Ensure the soil and pot are draining will out bottom draining holes. Hope these tips help!

    Does it matter what time of year a fiddle leaf plant is repotted?

      The best time is when your plant has the most access to light as it recovers from the repotting process.

      Most likely just in shock from the repotting process. Make sure it was thoroughly watered after repotting and place it in the brightest spot you have in your home to help it recover. It should bounce back within a couple weeks!

      Oh no! If your stick still is white on the inside, it can be revived! Continue to care for it by placing it in the brightest spot you have right up next to the window. Water when top inches of soil are dry and make sure the soil and pot are draining properly out the bottom drainage holes. You can do it!

    Fiddle leaf is one of the worst house plants in my opionion, i had one that was given to me it was beutiful but as soon as it was moved to my place it started to drop leaves, turn brown and only stem left, getting ready to put it in the garbage, they have to have perfect conditions, not worth it

    • @FiddleLeafFigPlant
      @FiddleLeafFigPlant  2 месяца назад

      I'm sorry to hear that! It is true that when we bring them into our homes, they can drop leaves if not placed directly in front of and up against the brightest window. Most will want these plants in a corner of their home and it isn't enough light for these tropical full sun trees to survive indoors. They are resilient, if you have a plant that has dropped leaves, place it outdoors under a covered patio area and water it when the top inches of soil are dry. Leave it alone and it will flourish!

    She is very knowledgeable, but watching her TALK about stuff instead of actually showing us HOW to do it - the before and after, the techniques - would be more helpful. It's a big commercial for her products. I feel like watching her sit on her sofa or at a table isn't helping as if she were demonstrating the things she talks about. Also, does anyone know where to find a plant expert from the Midwest or Northeast who actually has winter and knows how to deal with the issues we have with plants? Not everyone lives in California!
