Can I notch after I cut the top to propagate? The lower section is leafless. TIA
@@cincyshawn Yes, you may want to wait a few weeks after you prune before attempting to notch. Make sure your plant has a lot of light after notching so it has the energy it needs to push the new branches out. Happy Growing!
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thank you!
Thanks for the great information
This is absolutely great stuff and I just loved the way you record it with all those closeups!! Kudos to you and the team.
Thank you so much! I wanted to share exactly what it looks like to notch a fiddle leaf fig. Good luck with your branching attempts!
You mention marking where you make a notch. What do you use to make a mark?
I’m so happy you made a longer video really explaining. I watch every single video of yours and also I get all your products, couldn’t get the scissors cause it was sold out. Lol, I got my Fiddle “Claire” as a smaller plant and was scared to death it wouldn’t make it, so I started watching every single video about it but specially yours. Bought your soil and smart gravels for fiddle leafs and moved to a new pot with more drainage holes, bought the fertilizer, the indoor plant multivitamin, a grow light and humidifier. HAHAHHAHA. Soooooo, so far she is growing and doing very well. 😍 thanks
That is so wonderful to hear! Thank you for being a big supporter of our small business! Happy to hear your plant is thriving!

Thank you for watching and your supportive comment! Good luck with notching!
I just lost a leaf and it scared me out of my sleep😂 I immediately looked and sure enough, there was a leaf on the ground. I will be moving my plant out of the corner, watering and notching today. Love your videos. Thanks♥️
Sorry to hear that, these plants are very resilient and will come back given enough light, nutrients, and water! Happy Growing!
I followed this and it worked! Thank you! It took 1 month and I made sure to hit sap. I applied Keiki cloning paste.

Ethel is 10 feet tall! I've had her since she was a baby. Her pot recently sprung a leak!! I just bought a larger pot to put her in including her original pot. A gardener said not to try transplanting her or it might shock her. I hope to get the transfer done this week when I can get a muscular friend to lift her, pot and all. You've been such a great help. I've taken several cuttings over the years and they've done well.
Good luck! That is fantastic to hear that your plant is doing well! congrats!
My Fredrick is growing crazily. I notched and took the top off last year and It’s growing stems out the sides times 4!! And the top has grown two huge stalks. It’s so wide, tall and bushy, I think I need to buy a bigger house 😅. I bought him at Walmart 4 yrs ago he looks so small. Dehydrated and lifeless and he’s been very happy since. I give him miracle grow 202020 and it seems to help him flourish. I also took a bottom leaf of a couple yrs ago, places in water and it grew roots. Now that plant is over 2 ft high.
Do you grow all your fiddle leafs in singular pots or can they be doubled in a pot. Mine are a foot and half tall, all straight. How tall before I begin notching?

I just recently bought a small fiddle leaf fig and it lost all its leaves but it’s now budding and growing again. I made two small notches and trimmed the tips of both branches. Crossing my fingers this works out for me; a huge tip for keeping this plant a live is don’t move it a lot and make sure you have a watering pattern. I use an app to help me set reminders and trouble shoot what it wrong with my plant.
Great tips! Good luck with the notching attempts!

Thank you for the advice. The buds are still very small but definitely more there than before the notching. They are green and pointy, but haven’t developed the papery brown covering yet or anything like that. The main stem is also growing robustly (I had pruned it), so not sure if that apical growth could be keeping these buds lower down from continuing to develop. I’d add a photo but I don’t see a way to do that!

Hi Claire! This video was so helpful and made me feel way less nervous about trying notching. I rescued a FLF that was struggling with mites, and though it's pest free now it did drop many leaves from the stress of repotting and relocation. It's about 3.5 ft tall but only has 4 leaves right now. Would notching it help the plant fill out and get more energy or do you think I should wait til it's healthier and we're closer to growing season? Thanks so much I appreciate your work!!!!
Hi Abigail, thank you so much for your kind words! I would definitely wait until your plant is really healthy and actively pushing out new growth. This additional video on notching secrets to success may be helpful for you as well. Good luck! ruclips.net/video/Xt5jlFXN0zg/видео.html
I've had a FLF for 3 years which needed a jolt. Placing it outdoors in direct sun was not a good idea. I will notch to replace burnt leaves with new growth.
I notched a Schefflera last spring and it did not branch until this winter/fall.
I thought I had found some bogus horticultural technique, but this video was such a great in-depth explanation.
I'm really pleased to hear this video was helpful! Thank you!
Trying this today!
Let me know how it goes!!
@Claire, The Fiddle Leaf Fig Girl it didn't work :( but it did sprout more leaves from the top. It's just sooooo top heavy.
Thanks for the great information! I'm curious if you might have a higher success rate if you use Cytokinin instead of Auxin, as auxins promote apical dominance and suppress lateral root growth, while Cytokinin promotes cell division.
Hi Gran, thanks for the feedback! Propagation Promoter has worked very well for us in both rooting and shoots development. We include sea kelp in the formulation because of the naturally occurring cytokinins and auxins both present in the extract. These hormones respectfully stimulate shoot growth and root growth. Happy Growing!
Thank you for the video. Should I do several notches at the same time or wait between them? And if so for how long?
Great question! I recommend doing a few notches so you increase your chances of at least 1 being successful. Good luck!
I love your videos. Thank you so much. Will it still work if I don’t use the rooting hormone?
Yes it will, it just may take a little bit longer. Happy Growing!
Another question...The new leaves on my plants have red spots. What causes this and will they go away as the leaf matures?
Thanks for the info. Can notching be done anytime of year? I just brought mine inside with the drop in temps.
Of course! If your plant is happy with your indoor conditions and continues to thrive and put out new leaves, notching can be done at any time during the year.
When notching will the new branch be below or above the notch?
Nice video
Thanks!
Hi Claire, thank you for your informative video. My tree has a very long, empty thick stem and one branch leaning to one side. Im trying to promote a branch on the long base to balance it aesthetically. Does it still work if I notch the thick base on several locations or it has to be on the younger thinner stems?
Hi Lailee, great question! Notching works very well on stems that are thick and bark covered. On young, thinner stems, you most likely will not be able to create enough of an 'injury' when you notch to promote the redirection of the dormant leaf buds. Hope that helps!
Thank you for your amazing info!! I have a fiddle that I unfortunately had to cut down. And I’m having trouble getting it to grow from the top. It is thriving from the bottom. Do you have any recommendations on how to get some new growth from the top?
Great question! If growth is happening on the bottom and not the top, it is a sign your plant is stressed or unhappy. More light will help the plant to gain energy to grow. Make sure it is siting directly in front of and up against your brightest window. For more support, please join and post inside our helpful community! facebook.com/groups/FiddleLeafFigPlantResource
Thanks for the helpful videos. What should I do about 2 branches growing off from the mother tree at the base, just above the soil level? Each is about 12-16" long with several leaves. Both are healthy, as is the mother tree, they just look weird sprouting out from the bottom and falling over a bit. I think they're too big to propagate because of all the leaves on them. Should I train them upright alongside the mother tree? Would the mother tree be healthier with them gone? Thanks so much
Hi Kelli, that is a great question! You could propagate those branches, they could be cut down into multiple cuttings for multiple plants. Most likely you will find energy redirected to the main stalk of your plant once the lower stems are removed. Happy Growing!
Thank you so much. My fiddle has been very forgiving. I think the two I have are beautiful but they grow and then the leaves turn brown and they fall off. Just recently I have tons of new growth at different heights. What could’ve caused this? Like growth at the base and coming from the top. Everything else is just a tall stem. Like at least 24 inches on one and 36inches on the other from top of soil to top of plant.
New growth is great! But it sounds like it may be struggling a little if the new growth is concentrated only at the bottom. Continue to care for your plant by watering when the top inches of soil are dry and ensuring the water is draining properly out the bottom drainage holes. Place it directly in front of and against your brightest window so it is getting the light it needs. Thanks for explaining how to notch. I have heard that notching is done on woody, older stems rather than newer green stems. Is that correct?
Yes, that is correct! Notching only words for mature plants that have woody stems. If you have a younger plant, pinching will be the option for you to create new branches. This video may be helpful! ruclips.net/video/6O0ercfJ7TU/видео.html
Great video. I’m looking to purchase a Fiddle Leaf. Just haven’t found a nice one yet. Do you ever do videos on caring for Variegated Rubber Plants?

I love your informative video and I’m excited to try notching mine! It’s gotten huge and I actually need to prune it back quite a bit first. Is it okay to notch right after pruning about four branches? Also, I’m in Michigan and it’s not quite springtime here yet. Should I wait?
Hi Carrie, I would try pruning first and wait for the plant to recover then attempt the notching if the pruning did not produce the branches as you wanted. If your indoor conditions are consistent year round, any time is a good time to try notching! Happy Growing!
This is very helpful!!
My fiddle leaf got black spots on some leaves.
No, I didn’t over water. I water only after the soil is dried
No pests, and I kept the plant in indirect sunlight
Any suggestions to save my plant? Thanks in advance!
Let's help your plant get back to full health! Was your plant recently exposed to any colder temperatures? Blackening of leaves will happen after cold exposure. Hi. Thanks for the video. Can you notch on the trunk??
Yes! The trunk can be notched for branches.
Q-My ficus is seven years old with one main trunk stem I have observed the center portion of the leaves are yellowing, some of them are even opaque. It seems the leaves are losing their color. There are also areas of dark brown spots.
Thank you for any assistance,
S. Wright
Thank you for your question! It sounds like natural maturation of the leaves. The older leaves will discolor and naturally drop as the tree focuses its energy on pushing out new growth.
I have two beautiful fiddle leaf figs in my house. I will try this since they have only grown up on one branch. How big of a pot do they need? Thanks!
You want to make sure there is enough room in the pot for the root ball and a couple inches of soil in diameter. You don't want to go too big and run the risk of the soil staying too wet for too long. For more, you are welcome to join and post your questions inside our helpful fiddle leaf fig community! fiddleleaffigplant.com/community
Great video now I know why I have failed previously
Glad I could help!
I'm excited to try this, but my plant generally only grows new leaves during the summer months. Should I wait to notch?
That is a great question. Notching would be most successful when your plant is actively growing. However, you can try to notch and use a propagation promoter and ensure the plant gets a lot of light to increase the chances of success during the darker seasons.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant AWESOME info!!🍃🌿🌱
Hello Claire! Question: I pruned my Fiddle Leaf on Mother's day (2023) and now have like 25 or more new leaves and new branches that are growing larger quickly. I would like to shape my tree more because it got very leggy looking with 5 straight branches and I would like to do some notches lower down the 5 old branches that I cut to prune. Would it be ok if I did some notching at this point? Can you notch and prune at the same time, or will that mess things up? Thank you! Your videos are extremely helpful!
Great question! Congrats on your pruning success and all of the new branches and growth! You can notch in a few areas to see if new branches will grow just below the points where you notch. Happy Growing!
Thank you! I’m going to try this for the first time soon. Is there any time of year that’s better to do notching?
The growing season is best for notching however, if your indoor conditions are consistent and your fiddle leaf fig gives you growth year round, then notching can be tried anytime!
Thank you! 🌿
Hi Claire, How long after a notch, and a successful/unsuccessful taking, can I attempt another few notches? Trying to gain a lot leaves as I lost a ton with repot shock/overwatering.
Great question! I would wait a good 3-4 weeks before attempting the notches again.
This is so helpful! Maybe you could give me advice on my FLF: I got it maybe a year and a half ago and put it in a bright north facing window. It was very happy and putting out new Leaves very often that were large and rich in color. The stem was still thin and green and not similar to tree bark yet. About 6 months ago I moved and my plant is now in a bright west facing room, and it was in the middle of putting out a new leaf when I moved. Well 6 months later and the new leaf hasn't darkened or increased in size, and there's no new growth at all. The stem however has become noticeably thicker and more wood-like. I didn't change watering or anything, but I'm concerned by the lack of new growth! Any advice is appreciated!!
Hi Morgan, it sounds like you are caring for your plant very well! Sometimes the plants focus on growing the root system before any new leaf growth pushes out. Is your plant happy in the pot size it is in? If the plant is looking to be outgrowing the pot (roots wrapping around the inner edge and/or coming out bottom drainage holes) that is an indication it needs more space to grow its roots which in turn will grow more leaves and support branching.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant thank you for your thoughtful reply!! I repotted it into a bigger pot a few months after I got it because I noticed it was root bound, and I will check but I don't think it has already outgrown its newer pot.
Do I have to remove a leaf to have an available node to notch above? Or can I notch above an existing leaf? Thank you for the informative video!
Hi Vivian, no you don't have to remove any leaves. However, you won't be able to grow new leaves from the space where they once were. The idea is to notch to direct the dormant leaf buds to grow at the spot below where notching has occurred. Good luck!
Amazing video! Just wanted to know if notching will work on green stems?
Thank you so much! I don't recommend notching on green stems as you run the risk of cutting too much and pruning since young, green stems are not as thick and strong as woody, bark covered stems / trunks. Happy Growing!
Definitely going to give this a try..
I have a question, actually a cry for help..
My fiddle fig leave are falling off and there are brown spots around the leaves just within a day..
I keep them indoors and they get indirect sunlight, water them once a week.. what did I do wrong please help 😭
Are they getting enough water and light? Are they sitting right up against and in front of your brightest window? Best to join and post a photo and questions inside our community! facebook.com/groups/fiddleleaffigplantresource
Can you use this technique on other house plants like a arrowhead vine or even a peperomia??
You can try, but pruning may be more of an effective technique.
Hey I need help with my plant it’s getting brown leave also what the best the best fertilizer to used n where to get it Thks
Hi Sandy! Thank you for your question. I recommend figuring out the cause of the brown spots. Dry, crispy areas mean the plant is not getting the adequate water it needs. Dark brown, spots that spread may be an indication the root system is sitting in soil that is staying too wet and in a pot that is not properly draining out multiple holes on the bottom. For fertilizer, a 3-1-2 NPK ratio plant food is best. We have a certified 3-1-2 NPK Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Food available on Amazon. fiddleleaffigplant.com/food
What about the bambino type of ficus lyrata, is it good to notch it as well?
Yes! If you have a mature plant that has a bark covered stem, you can try notching.
Hi, can this be done on a bay leaf plant? (indoor plant,) some of its leaves went brown and I'm trying to help it out.
If your plant is mature enough and actively healthy and putting out new growth, it may work!
Will this plant tolerate having the stem buried? Ours is leafy only at the top with about 1-2’ of bare stem at bottom.
Hi Sherry, the root ball should be properly potted with fast-draining soil and in time, if you spy aerial roots at the top of the soil that is ok. The aerial roots act as the system that brings oxygen and moisture down into the root system itself.
I already have some rooting compound, can I use that.
Definitely, give it a try!
How does the newly growing branch looks like? Cause i made some notches 2-3 weeks ago, now there are some whitish, ~1cm, spindly growths visible below the notches... But i wonder ... Are they branches? if anything they look more like roots 😂
Hi Claire, I’ve followed your instructions and notched my fiddle leave. However, instead of new branches on the plant, I have seen the introduction of new ‘stems’ sprouting from the roots and not on the actual existing stem of the plant. Not sure how this happened and whether this is good or bad. Please can you advise.
Hello, thank you for your question. I'm not too clear on what has happened but for the best support, please post a photo along with you question inside your online community. facebook.com/groups/fiddleleaffigplantresource
Hi Claire, Thanks for all your fantastic videos. I have had success propagating and notching.
I notched a little deep into a horizontal branch and it has now splinted down the branch about 6mm, the branch is now leaning because of the weight of the leaves, I have staked it, so the branch doesn't completely break. Would I be best to cut the branch and propagate ? Ideally I would like to keep it as it would ruin the shape, however a branch dying with 11 healthy leaves would also be sad. I'm thinking that more growth would now put too much pressure on the weekend branch. Thanks so much for your advice.
Good question! I have also notched too deep and accidentally pruned. It sounds like your brach won't re-adhere to itself so I would prune now and propagate the cutting. Branches will grow from just below the point where the cut happened. Your tree will thrive and throw out more branches and leaves!
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thanks so much Claire I was thinking the same.
I have a few sunburned leaves, when I remove the leaves does it have the same effect as notching?
Not quite however, if you prune the trunk / stem that will encourage branching as well. Happy Growing!
Not about notching. But I definitely will try that once my plant is healthy. My leaves are turning brown from the tips. Any recommendations on solving this issue?
Browning may be due to under watering. When watering, ensure the full root system is getting enough water and it is draining properly down and out the bottom drainage holes. Then wait to water again when top inches of soil are dry. Also, make sure your plant is right up in front of your brightest window.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant thank you! Also are there any products out there that you could recommend to promote health?
My FLF lost the lower leafs and now looks like a tree, can I notch at the lowest part of the stem close to the soil so that I starts growing from there? Or is this just for the upper part of the plant
You can notch anywhere in between nodes! I recommend making 4-5 notches along the trunk to ensure one is successful. Happy Growing!
Hi. Thank you for this helpful video. Just a question. Once you prune the plant and take off a part of it for propagation, will the mother plant still keep growing? I'm scared of taking off a part, that my original plant may stop growing. Thanks.
Yes, that is a good question. Your overall mother plant will continue to grow even if you choose to prune the top for branches.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thank you for the prompt reply 😀
Hey, great video, very very informative, so thank you so much. I am a new FLF mommy, just rescued an almost 2 meter tall fig from an office that shut down. Its top 1/4th is full of leaves, however the bottom 75% is completely bare. So was hoping I can try this notching technique. My question is: I live in Duisburg Germany, and with winter starting, indoor temps can go as low as 8°c, should I notch in these conditions, or wait for spring/summer for this notching?
Hi Sidra, thank you for watching the video! I would wait to notch when the plant has access to the most sunlight for the energy it needs to grow those new branches for you. Or if you have access to a grow light during the winter season, that may be an option to try! Happy Growing!
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thank youuuu sooo much! I will definitely give it a try come spring, and give you updates. You are the only person on youtube who has actually replied to me regarding FLFs. So thank you soo much! you have a great day ahead!
🤩
I just cut about 18"off the top of my fiddle leaf fig to encourage my tall tree to branch out (thank you for the advice on your propagation video!) Would now be a good time to notch in order to influence where my tree branches out, or would that be too much stress all at once?
I would wait for the new branches to grow just below the point where you made the cut. Then after 4+ weeks, you can try notching if you like in the bare areas. Happy Growing!
Does it matter what season of the year it is when you’re planning to notch the Plant? It is currently Fall here in FL and I am unsure if I need to wait until Spring. Thanks
Hi Kevin, that is a great question! If your indoor conditions are consistent all year long, any time is a great time to notch. As long as your plant is getting the light, water, and nutrients it needs, it will have the energy to grow new branches when notched correctly. Happy Growing!
Hi! I have a question, should I only cut one notch at a time, or can I make several notches at once? Thank you!
Make a few! That way the changes of one being successful is high!
