This is Great information!!! I have been looking at videos about my Figs for over a year and you are the first person who has explained this so thoroughly and scientifically that it makes perfect sense and I know how to inspect my plants to make sure they are healthy. Thank you so much for your information!!!
Omg. Seriously you are my favorite person of the day!!
You're so helpful and so easy to understand
I'm so glad! Thank you!
super helpful! my little fiddle has been pushing out a ton of new leaves but the last few have had edema and i was freaking out... so glad to know it's not dying lol
My fig leaf is tall.some new leaves
are large and some small.
Thank you so much.
The talk is very informative and helpful to apply.
Thank you so much for this video! I am a worried fiddle mom! lol!
Thanks for this! It’s happening to my new leaves that I told you about yesterday. I feel better now 😃
That is great to hear!
Thank you so much! I was stressing out wondering what the heck was wrong with my Little Fiddle. The plant looked fine otherwise. I also had mine close to a south facing window. Such a relief.
Very welcome!
Nicely explained🙂
Wow. What an informative, awesome video! You rock, thanks so much for making it and sharing :) I just got my first FLF today and it's been outside so a bunch of the leaves have holes, cracks, dry marks, you name it! Well I just learned from you, what I thought was Edema is actually a sunburn! I'm hoping I don't have any pests but I'm keeping it away from my other plants for now just in case. I may take it in the shower this weekend to really give it a thorough cleaning. I'm going to go watch your video on root rot now. Thanks again, just subscribed!
So happy I was able to help! Wishing you the best of luck in nursing your fiddle back to health.
Thank you so much for solving the mystery of the red spots!!
Happy to help!
This video is so thorough!! Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy Growing!
Thank you! What an interesting and educational video, don't understand why you don't have more subscribers. Today I learned something new and that makes me very happy! Subscribed! The only thing is the audio was a bit too low.
Thanks I've been working on the plant for two weeks, the spots really disappointed me.. now I'm happy that my fiddle leaf fig is still healthy :)
Congrats!
I noticed a few of these popping up while I had some new growth, and almost didn't fertilize for fear of hurting it more...but now I know to go ahead and fertilize!
That is great! Happy Growing!
Very informative! Thank you so much!
This really helped me. I recently purchased a fiddle leaf bush and was happy to see lots of new growth only to see edema on the new leaves so worried me a bit. I'll keep a look out and hope it makes a turn for the better and goes away.
Glad it was helpful!
Glad I found this video because I was thinking I was not watering enough
Happy to help!
Thank you so much for information.
This is exactly happening to my plant. It’s almost the end of winter. My plant sits closed to a south-facing window and put up a couple of new leaves with little brown spots.
I had been worried about it and searched for a solution. Thank you so much for the video. I am feeling much better now that my plant is still healthy and will replant it to a terracotta pot to help with the drainage problem. ❤️
So happy my channel was able to help you :) There is an article on our website about edema as well, if you want to learn more: fiddleleaffigplant.com/edema-on-fiddle-leaf-fig-leaves/
Great, informative video!
Really needed this!!! Thank you✌️🇨🇦
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this. This is happening to my plant. I am also getting little tears. Why is that?
I have a question. I have a whole new branch with around 15 leaves, but they never seemed to have reached maturity. The leaves are completely different than the rest of the plant, much thinner and a lighter green. This branch has leaves that look like newer leaves but they are not deep green and thick like the rest of the girls. It's been over 2 years so they should be way past their teenage years. Also one of the leaves in this branch never made it to being a fully grown woman. She is stunted while having all the resources to be her best self. I move my plant sometimes so not sure if she's just upset because I'm moving her around. she forgets that she lives here for free! She even gets facials with a leaf cleaner. Her pores look better than mine.
Very good video. Thank you.
Happy Growing!
Thank you so much!!!! Omg. I was panicking
Thank you so much for this video!! I have a small Fiddle Leaf and this happened to the new leaf!!
Glad it helped! Happy Growing!
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant ❤️🥰🙏🏼
thank you for this very informative video
Glad it was helpful!
This is interesting because I have 3 stems 2 off them are smaller stems both of them have red spots on the leaves the bigger stem does not I have repotted my fiddle leave about 2 weeks ago I water regularly and I use liquid fertilizer when watering I will monitor my Fiddle Leave I didn't realize that this plant is so popular also here in Atlanta I ran into a woman from Florida who had a Uhaul full of plants so I took a chance and purchased a large plant for $20 and lol she gave me 2 Aloe Vera's
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great video , thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you! I looked at my new dwarf FLF and saw all those spots on a new leaf! Your video helped a lot it is definitely edema. I had a couple of orchids with white blisters that someone told me was scale, turned out it wasn't....too much water and it also caused blisters. On my FLF I am using a very fast draining soil, added bark and perlite. Don't use anything on the leaves, I've only had it about a month and it is in a nice size clay pot, also worm castings for fertilizer but it's too young to need fertilizer, isn't it? I think I know the problem: cold and dry ( air conditioning) and I also have it on a second shelf where the air does not flow. It had been on the shelf above and was doing fine. I think if I move it back out in the open and let it get a little more light, that should help. Thanks for your video..........very helpful and anxiety reducing! I thought it was a virus at first!!!
Glad our video helped you! :)
Thanks 🙌 😇 perfect video really helpful 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful
Thank you
You're welcome!
tx for all the detailed info! though i still can't really identify my issue as i just noticed these greyish dark spots/marks which are quite equally spread across only the underside of the matured leaves... while my fiddle leaf fig is still sprouting new leaves since a week ago after repotting with fresh soil with some aroid mix (so i'm assuming it should be pretty healthy). and based on your vid, edema only appears on new leaves so i'll have to rule this out. what else could be the problem with mine? :( i dont see any insects... could it be fungal/bacterial? any advice appreciated!!!
Hi, thanks for the tips. The audio was pretty quiet on your video though and difficult to hear without turning my speakers all the way up.
Thank you! I am now following you on Facebook.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this !! Baby leaves on my fiddle leaf seem to have edema based on what you described but they are also falling off within a week. Thoughts ?
You're very welcome, happy to help! Generally, if you are seeing edema and dried up/dying new growth, that is a sign of a watering issue. New growth needs more water than other parts of the plant, so it is often the first place to display symptoms of a watering issue. Check out the links below to learn more:

Hello. Need help. Bought my FLF online amd it started to develop brown spots. Read about it online and the possible cause is root rot. So i took it out of its pot and saw dark brown, dry roots. I dunno if this plant will still survive
Mine looks healthy but I have no new growth, I repotted her recently and she’s doing fine. I really would love to see new growth. Next watering she’s getting coffee!
Great! With repotting, it could be your plant is now focused on growing the root system. Once it has and is comfortable in its new pot size, you will notice new growth on top of the plant. Happy Growing!
This is great!!! My FLF is going through a growth spurt with edema. I was planning on repotting with better drainage tomorrow. Do you recommend waiting until after the growth spurt to repot? Thank you!!!
Great question! Yes, you can wait until you have the new growth established and then repot.
Thank you for the information! Can I use an aroid mix soil for the fiddle leaf fig?
I would recommend using our FLF potting soil: fiddleleaffigplant.com/premium-fiddle-leaf-fig-potting-soil/

Thank you for your help, I’ve got edema 😢.
That is ok! When fiddle leaf figs have growth spurts, edema is normal! It will disappear as the leaf grows out.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant I thought I was crazy wondering what happened to the first leaf I seen this on so I understand now. I had it and three good ones and the next thing I know the last two shows edema I have to get right with this guy but I’m on the right track now. Thanks again!
Was so sure mine had edema.. but theres a little hole.. plus the soil its in is really good draining soil. Like so good im scared it doesnt get enough water lol, cuz ill water it and the water runs right out. I also read tho, that too much moisture can also cause the red spots.. so idk.
I also have a humidifier right next to it, and it gets direct MORNING sunlight from a southern window.
Its fall rn but for some reason mines putting out new growth now.. so im a little confused whether i should water *more* because of the new growth.. or *less* because its getting colder?
Hi Samantha,
If there are tiny red spots on your new growth, it is definitely edema. Have you checked out the following article? fiddleleaffigplant.com/how-and-when-to-water-a-fiddle-leaf-fig-a-routine-for-your-unique-plant/ I know that watering properly can be tricky at times. That is why we also recommend using a moisture meter, as this will help you more accurately measure the moisture content in your soil. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XXFC7R3/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=indigomarke0c-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B07XXFC7R3&linkId=52253c5100122eef694cc520cd337a5d
I had bought a moisture meter but it wasn’t quite doing the job.
That's ok, some of our fiddle leaf fig lovers in our Facebook community swear by moisture meters, some use their fingers to test the top few inches of the soil. Whatever works best for your plant! Happy Growing!
Hi, thanks very much for the video. It is so useful. My three new leaves all have Edema, two are getting better with it growing into bigger leaves. But the middle leaf start having lots of white powdery spots, I want to take the leaf off, do you reckon it would be ok? Thank you!
Before you remove anything, I would research the tap water in your local area to see if you have hard water. Many areas do, and when a person uses that hard water on their plants, the minerals in the water can remain on the leaves after the water has evaporated. This is called "hard water spots" and they appear as a white, powdery substance on the leaves. You can read more about this issue and how to deal with it at our article here:
fiddleleaffigplant.com/hard-water-spots-on-fiddle-leaf-fig-leaves-3-simple-steps-for-removing-white-residue/
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant thank you for your reply. The article is so helpful!
Hi! Thanks for this video! It looks like my fiddle fig could have rust as the spots are also in the older, lower leaves. I had misted it a couple of times this past week. How do I treat it? And should I re-pot my fig? Thanks in advance!
You can safely clean the leaves and see if the spots can be removed. fiddleleaffigplant.com/hard-water-spots-on-fiddle-leaf-fig-leaves-3-simple-steps-for-removing-white-residue/
I don't recommend misting the whole plant as that can spread bacteria and fungus to other leaves. If you find your brown spots are spreading, I would repot into a sterile container with sterilized soil and help it recover with lots of light.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant I wish I watched your video before misting it. It was perfectly fine right before I started misting. I know better now. Thank you!!!
Hi Clare, I’m hoping you can get back to me. I have a new leaf coming out on my FLF and he’s so cute but he’s starting to curl under from the top. Does he need more water? I’m so scared of overwater him cause I just saved him from root rot. My moister meter is reading in between 3-4 ! Thanks so much!
Hi Lindsay, it sounds like your plant is ready for a drink! Water when the top inches of soil are dry or the meter reads a 4 or below. Make sure the water is draining well out the bottom drainage holes. For more help and support, please join our fiddle leaf fig community! fiddleleaffigplant.com/community
I’m currently propagating in a glass of water. I see roots starting to form, but also see edema. This wouldn’t disturb the propagation would it?
No, that's alright - you can just leave it be!
How do you feel about Neem oil as a leaf shine and pest treatment?
Neem oil can be effective, but it is definitely a harsher product, so you just have to be careful! I recommend using our leaf shine formula, as it can be a lot more gentle on the plant. fiddleleaffigplant.com/houseplant-leaf-armor/
Hi. Great video. So if we find that our soil is wet after using a meter should we immediately repot and switch soil or wait a few weeks? Thanks.
Hi Melody, I don't recommend repotting unless you are finding your soil is staying wet more than 2 weeks + or more. That indicates either the soil is not draining properly or the pot it is in does not have ample draining holes on the bottom to allow for the water to drain out.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant thank you so much. I will give it some time. Your guidance is appreciated. By the way, I purchased your Fiddle Leaf food on Amazon not knowing it was yours. It works well!! She's thriving. We just have to get my edema issues down and dry out! Happy Holidays, Claire 🎄
Hey I have a important question and would ask you because your an expert. Can I give my fiddle leaf fig bottled nestle pure life water for his entire life, and is it better then just regular tap better.
You can give fiddle leaf figs distilled or filtered water if your tap water is particularly hard.
Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant Resource Center should you give them hard water, isn’t hard water good for them?
How do u get rid of spider mites? Do the spots go away?
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with spider mites- they can be quite a pain! I think this article should help you out: fiddleleaffigplant.com/how-to-get-rid-of-spider-mites-on-your-fiddle-leaf-fig/
Okay so my FLFs new growth has been falling off!!! What do I do? Lol I’m so lost as to why😩
Did you move it in last 3 months? They don't like moving. Did you provide enough bright lighting? 2000+ LUX of light. Use a lighting app.
I am curious, I have began to mist my fiddle leaf with a mixture of neem oil(1%), dish soap (1%), and water... is this okay or could this lead to issues with my plant’s pores?
same thing I did for my fiddle leaf😌
I have a question that's puzzling me. I have recently, (on May 14, about 4 weeks ago) pruned my Fiddle Leaf, which is in a very healthy state. (I had never pruned it before and it was about to touch the ceiling). There are nearly 12+ new leaves that are opening up. None of the leaves have red spots on them, but every one of them have red veins. I've had the plant for 3+ years and I cannot recall at any time that new leaves in the past had red veins. They are actually quite beautiful but I'm scratching my head. Is this normal? Thank you Claire!
They are young leaves and the coloring should darken and even out as the leaves mature. Congrats on all your new branches and leaves! Pruning is the best way to promote new growth! Happy Growing!
Omg I just cut some leaves off was that bad???
It's ok! It will most likely spur new growth!
I had the same issue but it was due to under-watering. I started watering twice per week and it’s gone
So glad to hear your issue was resolved. We know, edema is no fun!
I’m propagating in water (inside) 😩😩😩😩😩 what do I do?????
No worries about that! Just keep it in the propagation container and pot when you have multiple roots growing!
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant it has some of those brown spots on them. Just leave it in the water?
I "rescued" a flf and I am kind of regretting it now. ☹️
haha oh no why?? I just did too, well kinda. I mean I paid for it but very little for the size. It's been outdoors and some of the leaves are bad!
@@HB-hb5rx wow haha I was really frustrated when I made this comment. 😂😂😂 But its doing very good now! It has sprung 4 new leaves so I have been able to cut off the ugly ones at the bottom. It gets worse actually, then just better and better. 🙂
Oh no I feel so guilty I cut the new growth with edemo ☹
Same. I just cut mine off. I thought it was root rot. SMH......
Eek! It's ok, you live and you learn. Now you'll know for next time!
I just saw these spots on the new growth and I thought my plant has root rot D:
Not to worry! Tiny red spots on new leaves are definitely not root rot. You can read more about edema here:
fiddleleaffigplant.com/edema-on-fiddle-leaf-fig-leaves/
fiddleleaffigplant.com/little-red-or-brown-spots-plaguing-new-growth-on-your-fiddle-leaf-fig-tree-heres-why-and-what-to-do/
I did too. I bought it and it was already sort of sickly. Crispy leaves and brown. I pruned them and cut those leaves too b/c I thought it was root rot. Omg!
Edema isn't only on new growth. It can be on the entire plant this is incorrect.
Edema would be on new growth. If your older growth has small spots on it, I would recommend checking for any signs of insects like spider mites or another root system issue.

Hi !! What kind of soil and plant food do u recommend? Plese !
