That bendy thing.....oh yeah I had to have it. Never used it for sewing but my son has used it making designs to carve into wood on his various projects. I am a sucker for rulers too. The Purple thing I have found useful but most of the things I had to have not so much.
I loved this,it was like being with a friend who always cheers you up.I've sewn for over fifty years and my sewing kit never had as many tools as it has now.Have I used them,only a few.My biggest expenses came after buying a new machine I convinced myself I needed to purchase numerous different feet for it.I have rarely used them ,why? because,as you so rightly said,I didn't really need them.I bought the duck bill scissors and used them once,they were brilliant but I can't find where I put them as I wanted to keep them safe.The truest and saddest thing you said was keeping fabric until you lose weight.That is me.I now need to re-think how I feel about myself(dancing naked is a step too far,at the moment) and accept who I am.Thank you for this and I love your glasses.

I have three sewing machines and one serger. One of the sewing machines is a lemon, one of them is very old and I cannot see well enough to thread the needle and the other one is a great basic machine with an automatic needle threader that I love. The biggest lie I tell myself is the fabric one. I admit that I am addicted to buying fabric. Great video Claire and I love the cowl top you have on. You look wonderful!
OMG thank you so much for making this video!!! I just made a toile for a pair of pants out of fabric that long ago (like 2012?) was going to be a skirt, but then something prettier came along. Didn't really have the length for the legs, so there's a seam between the knee and the hem, but the fabric got used and the toile can now be made up in yet another fabric from the same era. It will take me more than my lifetime to get through my fabric collection!!
I love this new energetic and healthy Claire! I'm guilty of saving the good stuff (fabric, yarn etc.) for someday. My dear friend Sarah was dying of cancer and called four of us to take her expensive and cherished yarn stash. I told her I was planning on making something special with it and she said "do it now". I took the most beautiful of all of it and made myself a fabulous sweater. I think of her every time I wear it. So cut into that gorgeous paisley and make something amazing (but make a toile first)!
Loved the video, and am guilty of all of those lies. The biggest lie I USED to tell myself was "I don't need to measure." I took your advice from an earlier video, and now measure for each project, and measure AGAIN if it has been awhile since I cut it out. :/ had to color block to add a couple inches to a jacket I cut for my son back in Jan. but haven't sewn until now. He grows faster than I sew. 3 sewing machines; but 1 is technically hub's, as it was his father's for sewing camping gear, and another was given to me for my son to deconstruct. It is older and the manual has such great detail that I was able to fix it and make it work again. I recently bought a used serger, because my sewing machine likes to eat knit fabric and I am tired of sewing on tissue paper and having to then remove it, that is a PITA.
OOPS, I forgot about the little hand held Singer machine I bought at a thrift store. I planned to use it for faux embroidery, I like the chain stitch. Learning embroidery was the safer alternative than using that gizmo.
I also have lots of "Too pretty to use" fabrics. BUT they do look so pretty nicely folded on my shelf in my sewing room, I think they are now part of my decorating. Thanks for making me see all my "lies".
It's like you're inside my head. All of these! My biggest lie is that I am going to use the fabric but then I decide it is too pretty to cut it. Thanks so much for this video! I currently have 2 sewing machines, a Pfaff and a vintage Singer that I got in a thrift store for $26 and fixed the tension problem myself. The Singer is a workhorse for sure and goes through denim like butter. The Singer is so old that it doesn't have an on-off switch or a light, so I have to sew on it in daytime only, by a window. The $75 Pfaff Hobby machine from Salvation Army online (via eBay) won't go backward and I cannot get the part from Germany, otherwise it is a dreamy machine.
You made me smile too, lovely to see you so bouncy and energetic. I am a well practiced procrastinator, not just sewing either! I only have 3 machines, the sewing machine bought last November, to replace the one hubby and son thought they could fix for me, which is still in a box in bits, but I am still counting it as it is fixable. Now my newest acquisition, an embroidery machine that I am just beginning to get to grips with. I also have lots of lovely fabric, but sewing has been minimal. I'm calling it lockdown lethargy well one excuse is as good as another when lying to one's self.
hahhaa I love you, you're funny, honest and to the point. I can't sit for too long sewing due to back issues so I do like to see how you manage your sewing projects to see what would also work for me and I like the smaller things you make which I feel I could do..beginner stuff really. I can't say I'm at the stage of making any garments yet, but I certainly did buy too much fabric under the guise of repairing the other halfs much loved.. won't let me throw out...clothes, jeans, work wear etc with the "it will get used he's always wrecking his clothes" notion ringing in my head. I almost got that stretchy metal button hole guide thing even though it was going to cost a fortune to get it shipped to the UK. Luckily I had left in in the basket and fallen asleep, the next day I saw it and looked how to use it on you tube and well....I'm not making any clothes hahaha....yet! I also have a bendy ruler from my tech drawing days and it did come in handy when i wanted to make a curve shaped pattern for a mask so you never know, maybe i will use it again. I just love your energy....and I am guilty to many of these so called 'lies', but most of all the first one is my biggest! I buy beautiful fabric with wonderful plans that realy don't get done! I have 2 Brothers and a Singer that belonged to my Grandmama. It's almost 65 years old and needs a couple of replacement parts but I dearly love it because I learned so much using it and it was wonderful bonding time with Grandmama. Love this vid. From America.

I only have one basic Singer and very pleased with it so I've never really felt the need for more machines but everything else is so relatable! The idea of not wanting to cut my fabrics because I'm not happy with myself is giving me a little existential crisis 😰
Claire, I found you by accident, and I absolutely love you! I am a 73 yr old, been sewing since I was 10, and still love it! I'm a 22-24 size woman and I can relate to so much of what you say! Keep up the great videos..cause I'm still learning!
Lol I guess I'm glad that I have a really limited budget because I haven't been able to burden myself with a fabric stash, huge pattern library, or a plethora or tools. But I do lie to myself about the amount of time I'm going to sew or how much I'm going to get done. And my biggest lie is that I'll keep my sewing space tidy and clean as I go. 🤣
Ha-ha. If I put something away I'll spend all my available time looking for it. I have tried using project bags like those used for counted cross stitch and yarn projects. Unfortunately, I moved in April and I still haven't found two of my project bags. One has a springtime dress and the other an afghan project!
Yes, the weight loss one has been a favotite of mine for years!! As well as all the other lies you mentioned. I finally started to sew my fabric favorites. I figure I can always take them up if I do miraculously lose weight! Thank you for the humor.
I enjoy your videos. I have four sewing machines. One of the machines I will be giving to my daughter next month. I will be teaching my daughter how to sew. I bought a vintage machine in August off of ebay a Singer 99. I am restoring. Once I have the cords replaced, I will be able to use it.
I have 5; a 1977 Kenmore, an 11 year old Brother, a Brother Serger, cover stitch and my son gifted me a Brother quilting machine last Christmas. Great video.

Oh, how true these are! I have stacks and stacks of pretty fabric I bought with ideas and they’re just waiting for someday when I have the time to do a project. I have two sewing machines, but one was a gift (and it stays in its box as a back up because I hate to give away something that was gifted.) Each was in the $40-50 range when purchased, though, so nothing high price here! And so, so true about waiting to cut into the fabric! I wait for when I’ll look better or this magical ‘someday’ when I’ll have more time. And the lies we tell ourselves about sewing after work! Eek! You caught me on that one, too! I have lots of fabric too precious to cut! It’s not that I don’t want to cut it I’m worried I’ll make a mistake in cutting or waste it. I love my sewing machines - they’re my friends, I don’t want to replace them! My Dad paid for a new sewing machine (my first) as a birthday present 7 years ago, it’s a Brother and I love it! Another birthday he also paid for a 2nd hand Singer overlocker (it took me 7 years to be brave enough to get it out of the box!) I bought my own Janome Coverstitch a couple of years ago and then last October I snapped the lower looper on my Overlocker during Lockdown, ordered a replacement immediately as I was using it so much, so I now have 2 overlockers!
My biggest lie is making (or dreaming of making) all sorts of wonderful special event clothes when I am a retired lady who quite literally never goes anywhere, living in a hot climate. I need shorts, tee shirts, maybe little cotton skirts and sundresses. Guess what - I have a closet full of shorts, tee shirts, little skirts, and sundresses. Not only that, I even have a nice selection of fancy clothes already, in case I’m invited to a wedding or something.
Oh Heck! Make some anyway - it's fun. And when you're retired, take commissions from others to make "fancy" clothes for them and make some extra money.
I make quilts not clothes, but I can relate to everyone of these. Buying clothes not making them with the losing weight one. I have fabric that is waiting for the PERFECT pattern before I cut it up because it is too beautiful to cut. I have fabric and patterns to keep me busy for years but buy more. I just got my 7th machine, a serger because I might someday make clothes again. For the curious the other 6 are: 2 Berninas, an old Kenmore, a Longarm to quilt quilts on. A 1950s Singer Featherweight (they are the cutest!) and a 1913 Singer 115-1 treadle that works. Or it will when I replace the band thing on the wheel. And I use all but the treadle and the Kenmore (my ironing station is on top of it's cabinet).
Ha! Okay, I’ll try to answer this through tears I’m laughing so hard. Three machines, old Singer Quantum Stylist, old old mechanical Singer for heavy duty sewing (always has a leather/denim needle on it), newer Baby lock Imagine serger. But, none are on the shelf. They’re all set in sewing tables. Lol. I have vintage, indie, folk, and…Amish patterns. I do use my fabric notcher. Do I get something for that? I don’t draft patterns but I have actual textbooks to learn. I don’t have to check fit when I use 1970-80 patterns?!? They fit when I made size 12 and they fit now…I’m not a 12…and they look great. I acquired fabric and patterns over 45 years, I just retired, and I am using everything! It’s amazing to reach this dream. I have the time and the materials and equipment, and I don’t have to spend a penny anymore. 😂. Well, some thread has rotted. Keep up your great videos. You are fantastic. Thank you. I have an Imagine serger (air threading!). I bought it used; a Juki that only does a straight stitch, but I adore it; a vintage Pfaff that sews like a dream, cost $1,200 but has none of the convenience of the newer machines; a second, identical Pfaff because...parts; a Janome CoverPro that does amazing hems and has been sitting unused for years because I can never remember how to work the thing. I also house a couple of machines for family members who don't have the room in their places and are planning to become amazing sewists one day. Oh, and a huge Pfaff Grand Quilter for my Bernina frame (both purchased used). It sat unused all through lockdown because there is absolutely no information available for that particular combination, and, because I was too busy washing my vegetables and the reusable plastic bags they came in, I didn't have the bandwidth to become a pioneer at the time.
My biggest fat lie is that I'm a smaller size than I physically measure. There's some kind of magnetic field surrounding me that alters tape measures I guess.....
Two sewing machines, a mechanical & a computerized. One overlocker. I keep a rough spreadsheet of my stash (60 meters) to try and keep me in line- but it doesn't work, lol. Creativity doesn't work that way. I've fallen for most of there except making a practice garment (and tissue fitting and hand basting) is my way of procrastinating actually starting the real sewing. I also don't sew when tired anymore because unpicking takes so much annoying time. Thanks for laughs!

I did escape part of the lies just because I didn't sew any garments as long as I was a working person. I started it again only after becoming a pensioner. And of course I do have a stash - and still hoping I'll use them all. At least I know what pattern I'd make of each fabric...🤥 Oh, I almost forgot - the new frame suits you wonderfully!
This is such a refreshing video. You have a real comedic talent. I too love to collect sewing gadgets (and kitchen gadgets and cleaning tools, etc.). Another thing I do is get so excited and get the pattern, the fabric, the notions and then come home exhausted and continuously put off even getting started. Or, I'll start, I will have measured not once but twice but when I sew up the toile it doesn't fit. Then I can't get back to it! I own one machine. It's a Singer that is rather new. My Kenmore had given up the ghost and went out to the curb. No serger or cover stitch for me. I do french seams or use one of the fancy stitches that came with the machine for finishing seams. FYI, I enjoyed the little dance that you did. Keep these videos coming.
You hit it on the nail for all these lies. I have a large fabric stash- so much that I don't know where to put them all.I have enough patterns to last me for two lifetimes. I don't do toiles cause I am afraid of them- as weird as that is. Let's not even talk about waiting to slim down before I am worthy enough to wear a certain pattern and fabric. Great video. So many fabrics, so many patterns. Never enough. I have to make myself stop. Stop looking at others progress. I can copy a pattern but it never feels the same unless it has a touch of not the pattern in it. Lol. I have my old Betty from 1911, a treadle. Fixed her up, just really needed some love. Also had to find the magic box of accessories that goes with her. I did. And we were happy. I love her. She was lonely and needed a sister so MJ (My Janome) came to stay. And we love her. And we were happy. We needed to make masks and quick so obviously 🙄 we needed a serger. And we love her and we were happy. Lol.
Lol! Well said and all true! If it makes anyone feel better, I will admit that I have 4 working sewing machines, 2 antique machines, 2 sergers and 1 coverstitch. And an embroidery machine. None of which make me a better sewist 😁!

I'll be chuckling over this video for days to come, I LOVE your attitude and your humor! I've been sewing for over 60 years (Mom and Granny started me very young) and have slowly managed to overcome most of these lies. HOWEVER, I DO have one of those bendy rulers (with numbers!) and used it only once. Waste of $$! I also have one of those little pattern notch cutters and made the same mistake as you did assuming I could mark fabric with them - not! But I DO use them a lot when I cut a final pattern based on a fitted toile, they come in VERY handy for that. How many machines do I have? Well, at the moment, I have 14, all but 3 of them vintage, plus a serger. But I'm a collector as well as a sewer (or seamstress or dressmaker or whatever term you prefer) and look for decent models that don't need too much work in order to run properly. I use them all to keep them in running order once I've refurbished them and because some of them do things much better than my modern ones. Among them I have a little Kenmore 3/4 size model that is brilliant with double needles. I use it to make undies, t-shirts, practically anything knit or stretchy, etc. It's 40+ years old, runs like a top, takes up very little room and is particularly easy to use. My serger is rarely used anymore because I like the little Kenmore better. This "mini-Kenny" can make lovely hems in knits that look just like they done on a coverstitch machine - something I refuse to buy as they are too expensive and I don't need it. I also have a 67-year old machine which chomps through upholstery fabric and up to 8 layers of denim as though it were butter. It has a 1.5 amp motor and rather than a belt, it uses a chain drive. It's an ugly old girl but boy can she sew heavy duty stuff! And I just acquired a BEAUTIFUL glossy black, Japanned-finish Singer 301A that's been perfectly maintained for all it's almost 70 years; it purrs like a kitten and sews exceptionally well. Can you tell I LOVE vintage machines??! . . .and sewing, and quilting and craft sewing. Please keep making your DELIGHTFUL videos. They are funny, charming, and informational. This "old dog" can still learn new tricks!
Well, I just cleaned out my fabric stash the other day. It had gotten totally out of control. By the time I was done I had a HUGE bag stuffed full of fabric and I gave it to my niece-in-law who sews and does crafts. I also gave her my basically brand new Juki serger. I used it about four times and hated it. Pain in the ars to thread. So I gave it to her and bought a Brother serger and I LOVE IT!. I still have a small stash. I did find about seven yards of a gorgeous fabric that I have no idea why I purchased it or what I planned to make with it. I'll have to start digging through my patterns. Thanks for the video!
I have never made a quilt in my life but…. I have all the gear (including the swivelling cutting board, fat quarters, rulers, rotary cutters, quilting how to books, etc, etc) to make one. When? Dunno. Have a hoard of dressmaking fabric to get through first. I no longer call it a stash since I have acknowledged it’s an addiction. However, I have genuinely run out of hoarding space so need to unsubscribe from temptation emails - that’s a start! And get sewing. Loved your video; rang so many bells!!!
😱I've got two surgers, two basic Brothers, a Brother Project runway, a Brother felting machine, A Sailrite... A Husqvarna basic, a Singer treadle that was made in 1887 that I learned on, another later singer treadle my aunt left me. a singer 200 year anniversary special edition that is completely self threading💓, a Singer slant in a table, a Singer from about 1959 electric in a table, a heavy duty Singer... So... I guess... I have...Eleven sewing machines, Two surgers & a Felting machine... They are all in great shape & ready to go. The Brother basics & the Husqvarna, I let others use when I'm teaching someone to sew. I use all the others on different projects, & have one set up for zig-zag, one for button holes... The zig-zag is used to wind all my Singer bobbins, except the 1887 model, it uses a shuttle bobbin.. The two treadle machines sew leather like it were cotton... .I'm seriously considering getting a long arm, just because it would be easier & cheaper to quilt my own fabrics for coats & jacket linings instead of hunting it down. I live in a small town in eastern Oregon, so it's quite difficult to source material... The only ones I bought new, are the special addition Singer, the surgers, the project runway & the Sailrite. the others are second hand... not bragging, this is the first time I've thought about it & taken inventory... My Spousal Unit says I have a Sears Kenmore set up to free-style quilt... (gee thanks honey) Urgle!!
I own three machines: my grandmother's Singer from the mid-50's, my mother's Singer from the late 60s/early 70s (not in great shape), and a Kenmore from '77 with unclear origins that came through a family member who got it from another family member. I've never bought a machine, but I'm a very beginning sewist, so we'll see how long that status holds. I can certainly see the appeal of getting a new machine, and I find myself eyeing newer models on occasion. Your video is such fun. Glad I came across you. New subscriber here! 😄

9 have a gifted viking that's older then me. A current Janome, and a surgery I'm saving for a cover stich, embroidery, and a nowhere sewing machine either an industrial or one with a large throat so I can work on bigger fuller projects
Fun video, I have 8 sewing machines, 2 overlockers and a coverstitch. All of them have personalities. A couple are slow and steady, one is super fast, and one is really stubborn and a proper diva! but I love them all. Xx
I just wanted to tl you how delighted I was at this big fat lies video. You were hilarious and yes I have told my self every bloody one of the 10 big fat lies. The one that really struck home was the one about our treasured too good to use fabric. I have several treasures that are possibly 30 years old. I vow I am using them this winter
I have my “just have to haves” separated by types: brocades, knits, linens, wool. All purchased with the idea to have on hand when I retired and would have more time to sew. Well, ten years into retirement and there’s been minimal movement out of the stash, but oh my has there been more incomings!😱
I used to be #1. Decided to become a minimalist, donated everything that I didn't have for a set project for this year. And I only buy more fabric when I am finished with the first one on my list. I keep a list of 12 projects at all times, whenever I finish number one I crossed it off and write a new number 12 and go buy fabric for it. I have two sewing machines. One that works and one that doesn't. You got me guilty on #6.
I have my great grandmothers old Singer that doesn’t even use electricity. I also live part of the year in 2 states so have a serger and sewing machine in each state. Before my divorce in 1991, I bought many remnants so even if I had no money after the divorce, I could still clothe my kids. I also have some beautiful Pendleton wool and some silk that I was going to sew up, but medicine the doctor prescribed caused me to gain 70 pounds in one year, and there was no way I was keeping that weight on so I saved the fabric till later. That was also in the 1990s. It wasn’t for lack of trying that I didn’t lose weight. This year I started using EatLikeABear and lost 50 pounds, but now I’m retired and don’t really need a Pendleton wool blazer since I winter in CA. I have boxes of fabrics that I’ve been going through. I’m teaching my daughter-in-law to sew and she shops here.
Oh my gosh! Have you been in my head?!! I can relate to every one of these lies especially the one about buying fabric just to have it - I love looking at my stash. It's so beautiful. How much should I buy in case I have a pattern at home that will work with this? The other was about losing weight before I can use the beautiful fabric that I've been hauling around for - not years - but decades! Thank you for the fun watch and good laugh.
I'm definitely guilty with the fabrics, I also bought the blue curve ruler myself. I've never bought patterns but I've downloaded a lot and also haven't come around to using them too. In my defense, I keep one serger and one sewing machine at the cottage. I also bought four of them used and got great deals. I do love my machines. I am also thinking of lending one to a friend that wants to try it. Ok, I also bought a notches, also like you, for when I draft patterns. Haven’t used it yet either. Duck billed scissors though are my go to scissors quite often. Mine are great quality and they can avoid some accidental cutting of a second layer. Great, especially if working with lace or any time you need to trim close to a seam. Love your humour.

I loved this,it was like being with a friend who always cheers you up.I've sewn for over fifty years and my sewing kit never had as many tools as it has now.Have I used them,only a few.My biggest expenses came after buying a new machine I convinced myself I needed to purchase numerous different feet for it.I have rarely used them ,why? because,as you so rightly said,I didn't really need them.I bought the duck bill scissors and used them once,they were brilliant but I can't find where I put them as I wanted to keep them safe.The truest and saddest thing you said was keeping fabric until you lose weight.That is me.I now need to re-think how I feel about myself(dancing naked is a step too far,at the moment) and accept who I am.Thank you for this and I love your glasses.

I have three sewing machines and one serger. One of the sewing machines is a lemon, one of them is very old and I cannot see well enough to thread the needle and the other one is a great basic machine with an automatic needle threader that I love. The biggest lie I tell myself is the fabric one. I admit that I am addicted to buying fabric. Great video Claire and I love the cowl top you have on. You look wonderful!

OMG thank you so much for making this video!!! I just made a toile for a pair of pants out of fabric that long ago (like 2012?) was going to be a skirt, but then something prettier came along. Didn't really have the length for the legs, so there's a seam between the knee and the hem, but the fabric got used and the toile can now be made up in yet another fabric from the same era. It will take me more than my lifetime to get through my fabric collection!!
I love this new energetic and healthy Claire! I'm guilty of saving the good stuff (fabric, yarn etc.) for someday. My dear friend Sarah was dying of cancer and called four of us to take her expensive and cherished yarn stash. I told her I was planning on making something special with it and she said "do it now". I took the most beautiful of all of it and made myself a fabulous sweater. I think of her every time I wear it. So cut into that gorgeous paisley and make something amazing (but make a toile first)!
Loved the video, and am guilty of all of those lies. The biggest lie I USED to tell myself was "I don't need to measure." I took your advice from an earlier video, and now measure for each project, and measure AGAIN if it has been awhile since I cut it out. :/ had to color block to add a couple inches to a jacket I cut for my son back in Jan. but haven't sewn until now. He grows faster than I sew. 3 sewing machines; but 1 is technically hub's, as it was his father's for sewing camping gear, and another was given to me for my son to deconstruct. It is older and the manual has such great detail that I was able to fix it and make it work again. I recently bought a used serger, because my sewing machine likes to eat knit fabric and I am tired of sewing on tissue paper and having to then remove it, that is a PITA.
OOPS, I forgot about the little hand held Singer machine I bought at a thrift store. I planned to use it for faux embroidery, I like the chain stitch. Learning embroidery was the safer alternative than using that gizmo.
I also have lots of "Too pretty to use" fabrics. BUT they do look so pretty nicely folded on my shelf in my sewing room, I think they are now part of my decorating. Thanks for making me see all my "lies".

It's like you're inside my head. All of these! My biggest lie is that I am going to use the fabric but then I decide it is too pretty to cut it. Thanks so much for this video! I currently have 2 sewing machines, a Pfaff and a vintage Singer that I got in a thrift store for $26 and fixed the tension problem myself. The Singer is a workhorse for sure and goes through denim like butter. The Singer is so old that it doesn't have an on-off switch or a light, so I have to sew on it in daytime only, by a window. The $75 Pfaff Hobby machine from Salvation Army online (via eBay) won't go backward and I cannot get the part from Germany, otherwise it is a dreamy machine.

I only have 3 machines, the sewing machine bought last November, to replace the one hubby and son thought they could fix for me, which is still in a box in bits, but I am still counting it as it is fixable. Now my newest acquisition, an embroidery machine that I am just beginning to get to grips with. I also have lots of lovely fabric, but sewing has been minimal. I'm calling it lockdown lethargy well one excuse is as good as another when lying to one's self.
hahhaa I love you, you're funny, honest and to the point. I can't sit for too long sewing due to back issues so I do like to see how you manage your sewing projects to see what would also work for me and I like the smaller things you make which I feel I could do..beginner stuff really. I can't say I'm at the stage of making any garments yet, but I certainly did buy too much fabric under the guise of repairing the other halfs much loved.. won't let me throw out...clothes, jeans, work wear etc with the "it will get used he's always wrecking his clothes" notion ringing in my head. I almost got that stretchy metal button hole guide thing even though it was going to cost a fortune to get it shipped to the UK. Luckily I had left in in the basket and fallen asleep, the next day I saw it and looked how to use it on you tube and well....I'm not making any clothes hahaha....yet! I also have a bendy ruler from my tech drawing days and it did come in handy when i wanted to make a curve shaped pattern for a mask so you never know, maybe i will use it again. Keep it up these are all great tips and I certainly would fall into plenty of those categories had I not seen this!!!I Love your videos, they make me smile every time. Many Thanks from the UK ❤

I have 2 Brothers and a Singer that belonged to my Grandmama. It's almost 65 years old and needs a couple of replacement parts but I dearly love it because I learned so much using it and it was wonderful bonding time with Grandmama. Love this vid. From America.

I only have one basic Singer and very pleased with it so I've never really felt the need for more machines but everything else is so relatable! The idea of not wanting to cut my fabrics because I'm not happy with myself is giving me a little existential crisis 😰

But I do lie to myself about the amount of time I'm going to sew or how much I'm going to get done. And my biggest lie is that I'll keep my sewing space tidy and clean as I go. 🤣
Ha-ha. If I put something away I'll spend all my available time looking for it. I have tried using project bags like those used for counted cross stitch and yarn projects. Unfortunately, I moved in April and I still haven't found two of my project bags. One has a springtime dress and the other an afghan project!

I enjoy your videos. I have four sewing machines. One of the machines I will be giving to my daughter next month. I will be teaching my daughter how to sew. I bought a vintage machine in August off of ebay a Singer 99. I am restoring. Once I have the cords replaced, I will be able to use it.

I have two sewing machines, but one was a gift (and it stays in its box as a back up because I hate to give away something that was gifted.) Each was in the $40-50 range when purchased, though, so nothing high price here!
And so, so true about waiting to cut into the fabric! I wait for when I’ll look better or this magical ‘someday’ when I’ll have more time. And the lies we tell ourselves about sewing after work! Eek! You caught me on that one, too!

I have lots of fabric too precious to cut! It’s not that I don’t want to cut it I’m worried I’ll make a mistake in cutting or waste it. I love my sewing machines - they’re my friends, I don’t want to replace them! My Dad paid for a new sewing machine (my first) as a birthday present 7 years ago, it’s a Brother and I love it! Another birthday he also paid for a 2nd hand Singer overlocker (it took me 7 years to be brave enough to get it out of the box!) I bought my own Janome Coverstitch a couple of years ago and then last October I snapped the lower looper on my Overlocker during Lockdown, ordered a replacement immediately as I was using it so much, so I now have 2 overlockers!
Your humor is the best! I haven’t told myself many of these lies (Yet!) but I know it will happen.
My biggest lie is making (or dreaming of making) all sorts of wonderful special event clothes when I am a retired lady who quite literally never goes anywhere, living in a hot climate. I need shorts, tee shirts, maybe little cotton skirts and sundresses. Guess what - I have a closet full of shorts, tee shirts, little skirts, and sundresses. Not only that, I even have a nice selection of fancy clothes already, in case I’m invited to a wedding or something.
Me too. I don't need to sew! I have actually not sewn in a while. I've been crocheting.
Oh Heck! Make some anyway - it's fun. And when you're retired, take commissions from others to make "fancy" clothes for them and make some extra money.
I make quilts not clothes, but I can relate to everyone of these. Buying clothes not making them with the losing weight one. I have fabric that is waiting for the PERFECT pattern before I cut it up because it is too beautiful to cut. I have fabric and patterns to keep me busy for years but buy more. I just got my 7th machine, a serger because I might someday make clothes again. For the curious the other 6 are: 2 Berninas, an old Kenmore, a Longarm to quilt quilts on. A 1950s Singer Featherweight (they are the cutest!) and a 1913 Singer 115-1 treadle that works. Or it will when I replace the band thing on the wheel. And I use all but the treadle and the Kenmore (my ironing station is on top of it's cabinet).
Ha! Okay, I’ll try to answer this through tears I’m laughing so hard. Three machines, old Singer Quantum Stylist, old old mechanical Singer for heavy duty sewing (always has a leather/denim needle on it), newer Baby lock Imagine serger. But, none are on the shelf. They’re all set in sewing tables. Lol. I have vintage, indie, folk, and…Amish patterns. I do use my fabric notcher. Do I get something for that? I don’t draft patterns but I have actual textbooks to learn. I don’t have to check fit when I use 1970-80 patterns?!? They fit when I made size 12 and they fit now…I’m not a 12…and they look great. I acquired fabric and patterns over 45 years, I just retired, and I am using everything! It’s amazing to reach this dream. I have the time and the materials and equipment, and I don’t have to spend a penny anymore. 😂. Well, some thread has rotted. Keep up your great videos. You are fantastic. Thank you. I have an Imagine serger (air threading!). I bought it used; a Juki that only does a straight stitch, but I adore it; a vintage Pfaff that sews like a dream, cost $1,200 but has none of the convenience of the newer machines; a second, identical Pfaff because...parts; a Janome CoverPro that does amazing hems and has been sitting unused for years because I can never remember how to work the thing. I also house a couple of machines for family members who don't have the room in their places and are planning to become amazing sewists one day. Oh, and a huge Pfaff Grand Quilter for my Bernina frame (both purchased used). It sat unused all through lockdown because there is absolutely no information available for that particular combination, and, because I was too busy washing my vegetables and the reusable plastic bags they came in, I didn't have the bandwidth to become a pioneer at the time.
My biggest fat lie is that I'm a smaller size than I physically measure. There's some kind of magnetic field surrounding me that alters tape measures I guess.....

Two sewing machines, a mechanical & a computerized. One overlocker. I keep a rough spreadsheet of my stash (60 meters) to try and keep me in line- but it doesn't work, lol. Creativity doesn't work that way. I've fallen for most of there except making a practice garment (and tissue fitting and hand basting) is my way of procrastinating actually starting the real sewing. I also don't sew when tired anymore because unpicking takes so much annoying time.

This is such a refreshing video. You have a real comedic talent. I too love to collect sewing gadgets (and kitchen gadgets and cleaning tools, etc.). Another thing I do is get so excited and get the pattern, the fabric, the notions and then come home exhausted and continuously put off even getting started. Or, I'll start, I will have measured not once but twice but when I sew up the toile it doesn't fit. Then I can't get back to it! I own one machine. It's a Singer that is rather new. My Kenmore had given up the ghost and went out to the curb. No serger or cover stitch for me. I do french seams or use one of the fancy stitches that came with the machine for finishing seams. FYI, I enjoyed the little dance that you did. Keep these videos coming.

I can copy a pattern but it never feels the same unless it has a touch of not the pattern in it. Lol. I have my old Betty from 1911, a treadle. Fixed her up, just really needed some love. Also had to find the magic box of accessories that goes with her. I did. And we were happy. I love her. She was lonely and needed a sister so MJ (My Janome) came to stay. And we love her. And we were happy. We needed to make masks and quick so obviously 🙄 we needed a serger. And we love her and we were happy. Lol.

I'll be chuckling over this video for days to come, I LOVE your attitude and your humor! I've been sewing for over 60 years (Mom and Granny started me very young) and have slowly managed to overcome most of these lies. HOWEVER, I DO have one of those bendy rulers (with numbers!) and used it only once. Waste of $$! I also have one of those little pattern notch cutters and made the same mistake as you did assuming I could mark fabric with them - not! But I DO use them a lot when I cut a final pattern based on a fitted toile, they come in VERY handy for that.
How many machines do I have? Well, at the moment, I have 14, all but 3 of them vintage, plus a serger. But I'm a collector as well as a sewer (or seamstress or dressmaker or whatever term you prefer) and look for decent models that don't need too much work in order to run properly. I use them all to keep them in running order once I've refurbished them and because some of them do things much better than my modern ones. Among them I have a little Kenmore 3/4 size model that is brilliant with double needles. I use it to make undies, t-shirts, practically anything knit or stretchy, etc. It's 40+ years old, runs like a top, takes up very little room and is particularly easy to use. My serger is rarely used anymore because I like the little Kenmore better. This "mini-Kenny" can make lovely hems in knits that look just like they done on a coverstitch machine - something I refuse to buy as they are too expensive and I don't need it. I also have a 67-year old machine which chomps through upholstery fabric and up to 8 layers of denim as though it were butter. It has a 1.5 amp motor and rather than a belt, it uses a chain drive. It's an ugly old girl but boy can she sew heavy duty stuff!
And I just acquired a BEAUTIFUL glossy black, Japanned-finish Singer 301A that's been perfectly maintained for all it's almost 70 years; it purrs like a kitten and sews exceptionally well.
Can you tell I LOVE vintage machines??! . . .and sewing, and quilting and craft sewing.

Well, I just cleaned out my fabric stash the other day. It had gotten totally out of control. By the time I was done I had a HUGE bag stuffed full of fabric and I gave it to my niece-in-law who sews and does crafts. I also gave her my basically brand new Juki serger. I used it about four times and hated it. Pain in the ars to thread. So I gave it to her and bought a Brother serger and I LOVE IT!. I still have a small stash. I did find about seven yards of a gorgeous fabric that I have no idea why I purchased it or what I planned to make with it. I'll have to start digging through my patterns. Thanks for the video!

Dunno. Have a hoard of dressmaking fabric to get through first. I no longer call it a stash since I have acknowledged it’s an addiction. However, I have genuinely run out of hoarding space so need to unsubscribe from temptation emails - that’s a start! And get sewing. Loved your video; rang so many bells!!!
😱I've got two surgers, two basic Brothers, a Brother Project runway, a Brother felting machine, A Sailrite... A Husqvarna basic, a Singer treadle that was made in 1887 that I learned on, another later singer treadle my aunt left me. a singer 200 year anniversary special edition that is completely self threading💓, a Singer slant in a table, a Singer from about 1959 electric in a table, a heavy duty Singer... So... I guess... I have...Eleven sewing machines, Two surgers & a Felting machine... They are all in great shape & ready to go. The Brother basics & the Husqvarna, I let others use when I'm teaching someone to sew. I use all the others on different projects, & have one set up for zig-zag, one for button holes... The zig-zag is used to wind all my Singer bobbins, except the 1887 model, it uses a shuttle bobbin.. The two treadle machines sew leather like it were cotton... .I'm seriously considering getting a long arm, just because it would be easier & cheaper to quilt my own fabrics for coats & jacket linings instead of hunting it down. I live in a small town in eastern Oregon, so it's quite difficult to source material... The only ones I bought new, are the special addition Singer, the surgers, the project runway & the Sailrite. the others are second hand... not bragging, this is the first time I've thought about it & taken inventory... My Spousal Unit says I have a Sears Kenmore set up to free-style quilt... (gee thanks honey) Urgle!!
I own three machines: my grandmother's Singer from the mid-50's, my mother's Singer from the late 60s/early 70s (not in great shape), and a Kenmore from '77 with unclear origins that came through a family member who got it from another family member. I've never bought a machine, but I'm a very beginning sewist, so we'll see how long that status holds. I can certainly see the appeal of getting a new machine, and I find myself eyeing newer models on occasion. Your video is such fun. Glad I came across you. New subscriber here! 😄

9 have a gifted viking that's older then me. A current Janome, and a surgery I'm saving for a cover stich, embroidery, and a nowhere sewing machine either an industrial or one with a large throat so I can work on bigger fuller projects

Fun video, I have 8 sewing machines, 2 overlockers and a coverstitch. All of them have personalities. A couple are slow and steady, one is super fast, and one is really stubborn and a proper diva! but I love them all. Xx
I just wanted to tl you how delighted I was at this big fat lies video. You were hilarious and yes I have told my self every bloody one of the 10 big fat lies.
The one that really struck home was the one about our treasured too good to use fabric.
I have several treasures that are possibly 30 years old.

I have my “just have to haves” separated by types: brocades, knits, linens, wool. All purchased with the idea to have on hand when I retired and would have more time to sew. Well, ten years into retirement and there’s been minimal movement out of the stash, but oh my has there been more incomings!😱

I have 4 sewing machines, one that was my grandmother's, a 5 spool serger and a 6 needle embroidery machine.
I used to be #1. Decided to become a minimalist, donated everything that I didn't have for a set project for this year. And I only buy more fabric when I am finished with the first one on my list. I keep a list of 12 projects at all times, whenever I finish number one I crossed it off and write a new number 12 and go buy fabric for it.
I have two sewing machines. One that works and one that doesn't.

I have my great grandmothers old Singer that doesn’t even use electricity. I also live part of the year in 2 states so have a serger and sewing machine in each state. Before my divorce in 1991, I bought many remnants so even if I had no money after the divorce, I could still clothe my kids. I also have some beautiful Pendleton wool and some silk that I was going to sew up, but medicine the doctor prescribed caused me to gain 70 pounds in one year, and there was no way I was keeping that weight on so I saved the fabric till later. That was also in the 1990s. It wasn’t for lack of trying that I didn’t lose weight. This year I started using EatLikeABear and lost 50 pounds, but now I’m retired and don’t really need a Pendleton wool blazer since I winter in CA. I have boxes of fabrics that I’ve been going through. I’m teaching my daughter-in-law to sew and she shops here.

Oh my gosh! Have you been in my head?!! I can relate to every one of these lies especially the one about buying fabric just to have it - I love looking at my stash. It's so beautiful. How much should I buy in case I have a pattern at home that will work with this? The other was about losing weight before I can use the beautiful fabric that I've been hauling around for - not years - but decades! Thank you for the fun watch and good laugh.
I'm definitely guilty with the fabrics, I also bought the blue curve ruler myself. I've never bought patterns but I've downloaded a lot and also haven't come around to using them too. I'm laughing at myself too writing this text. A few other blunders but I've totally enjoyed watching you laugh at yourself. 💕💕💕👏👏👏👏😅😅😅

I am guilty too. I think I have 8 machines and that is after selling a few. I have three sergers, one coverstitch and four sewing machines. In my defense, I keep one serger and one sewing machine at the cottage. I also bought four of them used and got great deals. I do love my machines. I am also thinking of lending one to a friend that wants to try it.
Ok, I also bought a notches, also like you, for when I draft patterns. Haven’t used it yet either.
Duck billed scissors though are my go to scissors quite often. Mine are great quality and they can avoid some accidental cutting of a second layer. Great, especially if working with lace or any time you need to trim close to a seam.
