- Gravity defying marketing with Cliff, unfortunate results for the dev team. In April 2018, Boss Key released a statement that the game failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep the game sustained. On June 11, the game was made free-to-play on Steam with a notice that the servers would be shut down on September 14, 2018. As of September 14, 2018, LawBreakers was removed from Steam and is no longer available for purchase.

I think the rudeness of this guy helped it fail
Cause he betrayed his core audience. You can't spend years building a core following only to then turn your back on those people who gave you the funds to build more. I think this downfall was completely justified on account of his rudeness as you put it best.

@@truthpurpose Overwatch was bad from the start. Played the beta and was already bored. The only reason people played it is because of the anime/comic-ish artstyle and everyone wanted to play Tracer. Thats literally the only reason people kept playing it. It had zero redeeming qualities except good short-films.

Even saw another game where the cops had glitched out with 90 or so of them just standing outside. Guy could’ve went for a higher score but choked hard at the end.

To be fair, it was a pretty intense game. Just like after playing a game of Quake Champions or Titanfall 2, it left a pretty intense feeling in your body.

Lawbreakers looked like a lot of fun. By the time I had heard it was shutting down I didn’t even realize it had released.
It was insanely fun. Super unique combat with the Zero G zone, and had INSANE ceiling for movement tech etc. I actually have a couple clips of the kind of movement you could do in it saved. I really miss it.
Too bad Cliff is a braindead idiot and the production company (nexon) just didn't know AT ALL wtf the market was doing at that time. Collapsed so fast.

This one really shattered the credibility of even well regarded independent critics. Funnily enough it was a perfectly competent arena shooter which was fun, Cliffy B just couldn't resist marketing it to every edgelord 'high skill gamer' and found that market, despite its immensely loud voice, consisted of about a hundred people. RIP.

@@The.Orange.Wizard given how Dark Souls is notorious to many as a very challenging game, far more difficult than many AA and AAA games of its time and to some extent even today, Cliffy likely threw that line around to be very clearly smug about how Lawbreakers is a game that only the most super skilled pro FPS players can play.
It would have made more sense and perhaps less cringy if he compared it to Quake and Unreal Tournaments, multiplayer games known for having a skill floor high enough that only those with the skills and tenacity can keep up
The worst part about its failure is it was legitimately fun
As I’m revisiting this video, yeah this honestly looks better significantly better than Overwatch and I wish it hadn’t died before I got a chance to play it.

It was a game which was done better with forge in xbox 360 halo games using gravity lifts and gravity wells
I think one of the reasons that lawbreakers failed was because 1) it was a exclusive so not everyone could play it and people thought it was scummy. And 2) the fps genre is so oversaturated that there was like 2 other fps games that did what lawbreaker tried to do but better
it's honestly nice to see games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky outgrow the content we see in Crowbcat's compilations, but the schadenfreude in this video will continue to age like a fine wine

It feels weird looking back on this, since there's a lot of decent points that Cliffy B touched on that are legitimate complaints, but he just went about expressing them in a terrible way, or learned the exact wrong lesson from them.
1. AAA games were incredibly oversaturated in 2015 with old I.P's.
2. Leading with PC first *does* allow them to port onto consoles more easily if they do a lot of the legwork and establish a solid PC build first.
3. eSports was overhyped (and we're now currently living through its bubble bursting), and felt like it was crammed into every game.
All of these are valid, and somehow he just communicated them in such a caustic way that nobody wanted to touch it.
He may have made some good points, but the game just wasn't good. That's all it comes down to.

It’s a shame the game died the way it did. When it went free to play, it actually started finding its niche audience. But by then it was already too late. Cliff was too stubborn sticking with the “$29.99 none of the” schtick. If he made the free to play decision sooner, it would’ve lived much longer. I guess he thought going free to play would be like admitting defeat, and he was too proud for that.

its literally because this was released in the prime of overwatch being around as THE hero shooter everyone was caring about, and that high movement, no baby hand-holding dumbing down of game mechanics, fast paced games are hard to sell.

The thing that's most painful to me about all of this is that Lawbreakers was actually fun as hell and had a massively high skill ceiling which is exactly what I enjoy from shooters like this. Problem is Cliffy B actually is still living in the 90s and thinks he's still 18. I'm surprised he didn't whip out "gnarly", "bodacious", or "tubular".
I think the shirt actually said "FUCK" but the stem of the 'F' was cut off, making it look like a little angular 'c". But the bigger crime here was the doughy thug life facial expression with the corgi on the Days Inn bed in the background. All he needed to complete the look was to aim sideways toward the camera an airsoft Glock and have an aromatherapy kit in the background.
All the 90s game design heroes have become parodies of themselves: Cliffy B, Chris Roberts, Peter Molyneux, Tim Schafer, etc. Oh well, Unreal was a landmark and it's very impressive how long its engine has been relevant.

UT2K4 is dead as fuck. Still boot it up every couple months or so and search for games in the background/idle and see if anyone appears. You can find people playing Deathmatch, but not much else.
Also Ross Scott, who runs Accursed Farms and Freeman's Mind has UT2K4 PuGs that get pretty big.

The sad part is that the gameplay looked actually a bit fun , but that marketing murdered the fan base before launch.

One of the best shooters I ever played. I was a Beta tester and preordered the game based off what I had played, however it not being free to play was a real kick in the nuts to most people who were interested in it. Then there was also a problem with how the release version of the game made some shitty nerfs to characters, made the game run worse on older hardware than the beta, and released the stupidest most broken character ever that nobody wanted to play anything else.
It was a great game. Cliffy really fucked everything up, especially when he decided to charge $29.99 for the game instead of keeping it F2P. It was one of the best shooters that I've played to date because it reminded me of the good ol' days on Quake and UT.
I played it it wasn't bad... maybe a bit too fast and some abilities were maybe a bit too strong etc.. but that's to be expected at the start of a games life cycle.
Never really liked quake etc but this was'nt bad...
But never go from f2p to paid like what the heck?
