- We hit Beverly Hills with the Pentax 67 and the Canon EOS-1. The most slept on 35mm film camera, in my opinion. Let's see what photographs we can take. I hope y'all enjoy this one!

Big announcement in October… Maybe a book??? Nice shoot Mike! And you managed to rescue some underexposed!
You may be right!!! Haha thank you
i was thinking the exact same thing! i'm hopeful
the smile after you say "pentax 67" 🤣
All day haha
Love all your stuff I use 35 all the time and you do get some hit and miss. But for me is the fun and the experience
Miguel
Thanks Miguel!
Curious to what's dropping and I have no idea. But sure am just glad that there's a new Mike Gray video. Always stoked for what's in store for you, my man! Much love.
Indeed!!! Thanks
My guess is a book in October. I would love to have one of those!
Maybe!!!!!!
The shots in the car was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks bro!
Beautiful video! Great shots! My EOS 1V meter underexposes by about 1.5 stops and I’ve learned to use my light meter with success!
Thanks a lot Matt! Honestly mine may have the same issue. No more shooting without that light meter.
Lmao that smile after “Let me move my Pentax 67” 😂 These shots were dope man! Good stuff!
Hahaha thank you!
i'm tapped in! i'm gassed there's gonna be a lot more videos this year
A lot more!!!!!
As always great photos and narrative, look forward to the next video
Thanks Jason!
Love your channel and this shooting
Thank you!
What a beautiful model, her personality shines through. A real character ! I am loving the car too.
Thank you!
Well for the ones you showed us in the end, damn, what a collection. 💯
I appreciate you.
Love this channel… your videos keep me going in my own film portrait career
That means a lot. Thank you
Good to see you back with another great video. Interesting and artistic. Nice work everyone. Best wishes, David in the UK.
Thanks David!
Thank you mike again, you humble me so far as photographer
I appreciate that so much 🙏🏾
that face you made when you moved the P67 out of the car.... had me laughn
I love my Pentax haha
Gave me an idea for my next shoot😎, thanks Mike
I love to hear that!
Will always be here to watch you grow, I guess a book is coming our way ;)
Thanks so much for always supporting
The fireplace shots 🔥🔥
Thank you.
You did a good job salvaging the underexposed ones. Good reason to do another photoshoot with Audrey and her car. 😀
Oh it’s going to happen again for sure! Haha
🔥🔥🔥as always! Love the B&W!!
Thanks!!!
Book, Exhibition or he finally shooting his own digital medium format!!! if I have to go full What If:-marriage--- LOL. Nice video as always!!!
Hahah we shall see Warren!
🔥🔥🔥🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Let’s goo!! This is smooth 👌🏾
You killed it bro!!!
Dope work my dude, that Standing in the bath tub B&W photo was my favorite.
I appreciate you
How did you underexpose with the EOS? The meter is great. Did you set ISO correctly? Wrong meter setting? Exposure compensation set wrong?
Meter was correct .
I had my Eos-1 under exposed on me recently too! Don’t know what happened. I think you may want to check the built in meter against a reference (say a handheld meter) and see how much it’s off. Another possibility is you accidentally moved the exposure compensation dial on the back to under expose if you were using aperture priority mode. I would lock the back dial when I’m not needing it.
With film, I general prefer over exposing one stop if possible to make sure the shadows are exposed somewhat. Denser negatives capture more details.
I love the intro. I love your vids. Dope as always. Love you!
Thanks a lot Oliver!
Another great video Mike, thanks.
I recently added a Canon EOS1 to my (ever growing) camera collection. I use a Canon 5D IV for most of my digital work, so I've started putting the EOS1 iny bag as well.
Only a couple of rolls through the camera so far, and with good results. And it means I've got a film camera to use with my EF mount lenses.
I love that Nick!
Love the video as always. I just got my Pentax 67 recently and I’ve been shooting with it a lot lately. I have a 105mm f2.4 I have noticed when I shoot with it in studio I miss focus a lot but out side I focus perfectly. Is it possibly the amount of light in studio that’s messing me up? I know your thing isn’t instructional videos but it would be nice to know what you do with lighting when you use it. Great videos though I have still learned from them. Can’t wait for the next one.
I’m not too familiar with the 105. I’ve used it only twice but I know that I’ll be making a lighting video very soon!
The fireplace shots, sublime! My Pentax 645n and 67ii internal light meters never let me down, like you Mike, I put my trust in them, but I also carry a light meter. Greeting from Ireland.
Using my light meter from now on haha
I got bullied into making a comment so here it is LOL. Always great seeing how you go from a simpler setup to the more elaborate ones and ALL of the random issues, makes me want to get the camera out and shoot. Salute!
Thank you!!!!
I want to know who bullied you into making a comment?
@@tylershieldsvideos 😂😂😂😂
I'm impressed most about a K-car being still on the road!
Indeed! Haha
Your one of my favorite photographers man! Love the videos
I really appreciate that.
I really enjoyed this video! You may have underexposed a few…but your photos were awesome. The banter between you and the model really adds to the presentation.
I appreciate you!
Medium format just has an amazing look.
Agreed Chris.
they were still awesome. definitely went with her vibe
Thanks John
Great job Mike!🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!!
Love the indoor shots, great work! What is the continous light your using for that setup?
Video coming very soon on lighting!
Mike Super! Thanks for share :)
thanks!
Your amazing learning how to teach someone how to pose from you 🤞🏾🤞🏾
I appreciate that!
Sick photos man! I like the underexposed look but also agree thinking how you'd shoot it with the Pentax!!
Can I ask how you did lighting for the fireplace shot?
I’m going to make a lighting video very soon! Thanks a lot man!
Great shots! I am curious why you go away from the portra colors when you are using the EOS 1?
It was underexposed heavily so the colors are lost unfortunately
Absolutely liked this one. I love how you're always working with the models and the playful banter you have with them. It creates beautiful images that come through. As for the October release are you saying theres a new Pentax camera coming that we don't know about??!!
I appreciate you watching and supporting! Not a camera announcement on my end . I’ll tell you that haha
Man, glad to see I am not the only person to struggle with the light meter accuracy. I have a Mamiya645 Pro which I love but every time i got scans back i was wondering what was off with it, bought a light meter and realised the internal light meter underexposes everything. Light meter is a must purchase for anyone trying to shoot film haha
It happens to the best of us lol
The initial vibe I got was Jackie Brown. That quickly turned to Boogie Nights, it just needed roller skates.
Then you mentioned gangbangin and I lost it 😂
Great photos either way 🔥
hahahaha i'm weak. Thanks a lot!
Did you put Portra 400 in the Pentax 67 too or did you switch the films up for the medium format? And I was also wondering about how many rolls would you say you use per shoot?
I used Portra 800 in the Pentax 67. This shoot total I shot 3 rolls
What's up good guy? I didn't love the photos in this one, but the video at the beginning was FIIIIIIIIIIIIREEEEEEEEEEE!! That gave me a vibe.
I respect that. Thanks for the honesty!
@@MikeGrayFilm thanks for not taking it offending. I appreciate your work overall. You're really a professional.. oooh man, that beginning sequence... wish to shoot soemting like that.
of course bro. Every shoot isn't gonna be a banger. That's what comes with it haha@@iammz81
Dope ass video man. The 35mm shots were still good, just different.
I appreciate it bro
Just let us know when that link for the photobook goes up! Definitely need that in the collection
:))))
You two are a match in heaven
she killed it haha
Killer video as always dude!
Thanks a lot bro!
Great work as always Brother Gray.
We would like to see some of your digital work sometime. I switch between film and digital more these days with the cost of film.
Wanting for your announcement in October.
Peace ☮️ ✌🏾
Digital coming very soon!!!
I actually really like the underexposed shots. They give it this really old-school vibe.
I appreciate it man
Me too
They do have a great, retro appeal
Yeah, I like the underexposed look
Nice video bro. Keep up the good work 📷
Thank you!
I don’t understand this. I’ve used Weston and Sekonic light meters many times over many years but also internal meters in Nikon, Olympus, Leicaflex and Canon film cameras. I’ve owned 4 EOS1n’s, an EOS3 and others and never had a problem with their meters, if used sensibly of course.
Could this be the developing lab or scanning issues? Or was the ISO mixer? Which is possible given the override function which TBF is fiddly to set, spot or reset?
Going to have to give it a look but I won't take that risk again lol
Talented bro and so calm
Thanks a lot
Book, exhibit, or a class but crispy shots as always! 🔥🔥🔥
:))))))
yo mike! would be dope to see how you lit the interiors!
Next video!!!!
Keep strivin', Mike! The EOS1 photos weren't that bad...
I appreciate it Charles
When she said "I use the Sony alpha", Mike was like 💀.. 🤣 I can't think of something more opposite to film, than Sony alphas.
😂😂😂
Mike you need to try this! Get a magenta cc30m filter and use a full plusgreen gel on your flash. You get correct skin tones for your subject with a sick purple sunset sky. Shoot during sunset or blue hour. You can adjust the magenta white balance in lightroom if the effect is not strong enough.
send me the filter and I'll try it hahaha
@@MikeGrayFilm a seller on flea bay is selling a 77mm one for $10.. That's almost free
"Let me just move my Pentax 67" 😁🤣
Just wondered if you routinely overexpose Portra (e.g. rate at 200). I usually overexpose by a stop just to protect against this kind of thing happening, because in my experience Portra falls to pieces even if underexposing by just a small margin. Gotta say though, i did like the images from the EOS1.
Portra on 120 i shoot at box speed for the most part. I appreciate it David!
I could tell that was the eos-1 from the sound of the motordrive lol. I have had a few of those
I love it haha
I'm just happy the light meter lived to fight another day....
It will always lol
I’ve been a Nikon film camera shooter, I’ve shot F90x, F100, F5 and now I shoot on the F6 as my primary body and the F75 as a secondary body… None of their light meters have ever failed me. I only shoot on aperture priority on all my campaign jobs and the Nikons have always nailed the exposure perfectly. Everyone should give Nikon a chance 🤙🏽
I think i may have to give that F4 or F5 a try one one of these days.
Bummer about the EOS1 light meter. I ran a test roll out of the one I bought months after and the light meter was fine but the flash hotshoe didn’t work 😢. And it was past the eBay return period
It will get better haha
With camera light meters - it's always quicker and more convenient to use the built-in one on the camera. I test my camera light meters against a phone app in widely varying conditions to get a feel for their accuracy, before I use them with film. If they are inaccurate or only work in certain conditions then I use a light meter. If they are pretty accurate I use the built-in meter. Unfortunately this does tend to make me favour the cameras in my collection with accurate light meters a lot more (Pentax 6x7, Minolta XD-11, Mamiya 645, Canon A-1). I've never had a problem with point-and-shoot cameras and exposure.
yea. I should know better.
What light did you use for the photos inside the house?
video coming soon!
Is it legit to call it or any other medium format 7 x 6, 8 x 6 if you shoot vertical all the time? Yea, I got a 4.5 x 6 camera.
lol!
Definitely want to verify good shots before shooting the good stuff, eh? Although I don't use an actual light meter, I have sometimes used a phone app. BUT, I ALWAYS verify with a digital camera first - every film shoot - by setting my ISO to the film speed and dialing it IN first. I start shooting digital first because it's "free" and it allows both of us (photographer and model) to warm up a few minutes. Once warmed up and everything is flowing great, grab the film (prefereably already loaded) and shoot just as fast as you were on digital. Some people have a tendency to slow down because it's film. I like to shoot like it's digital, because if I change even the speed at whoch I'm composing or feeling shots out, they won't be the same...they won't come out right.
Dude, wish you could have shot 6x6. I enjoy looking at the 6x7 format I am just partial to the 6x6. Old man here and I like the record and CD format 🤣.
lol it hurt not having time to use it but i had to make the hard decision. lol. You'll see that hassi in action next week though. lol
Photobook coming October 2024!?👀👀
:)))))
That's odd with the canon light meter.... I have a really cheap eos-m and it's been just as accurate as the minolta A mount camera i use regularly.... I guess its always to err on the side of over expose no matter the camera or as you say... use an external light meter
100% man. Learned my lesson!
I recently picked up an Elan 7e and everything was underexposed. Sold it. Is this a Canon Issue. Film expired?
I don't think so but may be a factor!
You must be checking your emails. I left you another comment last night on your Contax G2 video and it was all complimentary. Really do like your style and your young ladies look like so much fun to work with. I'm thinking I must do some female portraiture this year after years of street photography only. Best wishes Jake E.
Do it Jake!
Is Pentax going to send you their new film camera?
Probably not but they should! lol
After a P67, no other shutter sounds right anymore... maybe except a Graflex SpeedGraphic focal plane shutter.
No lie haha
That is the only thing with film, you get it wrong and it will kick you. I always used a Pentax spot meter.
indeed!
Oct exhib/book incoming?
:)))))
I like mixing at same time using 35 and Medium format…. And never is in camera light meter!!!! Only hand held
True!
Also did you check iso setting and ex compensation…
Gotta be a book lol
maybe you're on to something? :)) lol
Go wide for the Bill Brandt look.
i love the wide
@@MikeGrayFilm and Ive been looking at one of those canon cameras, the 1NRS...supposed to be good or 1v which is expensive but one of the last of those film DSLRs.
On the 35mm, it may have been a little under exposed, but the composition and posing was nice. On a whole, l like the shoot. I have an EOS 1N that I use every now and again. I'd like to use it more, but the price of film....Yikes. It's a lovely camera though. Now, let me see if I can guess what's coming up. Hmmmm....you're getting married. Lol.
hahaha not quite, David! lol

Thank you.
Re-subbed! Keep feeding us fam!
damn sad to hear I lost you for a second :(. WE ARE BACK!!!! NO MORE STOPPIN'!
the B&W are creasy
Thanks!!!
gorgeous model, great photos especially in the car. October? You will be pregnant or what 😅
Thanks! Haha I guess you’ll have to find out.
and the Hasselblad shots???noooo
Ended up not using the Hassi :/
Hi Mike, like your style always entertaining and your model has a delightful sense of humour from when she first waves her lollipop at the camera. But will you please tell all your friends in America that Eos is the Greek goddess of dawn light and you do not need to spell her name out anymore than I would call you M I K E. I know you won't take offence. Best wishes Jake E.
lol fair enough
