For sure some Skmei are absolutely bang for money. I've bought a 5600 clone, and I have to admit the strap is surely more comfortable, the functions are similar, the backlight is glorious (double green led Casio, double green led. Not a amber shitty lamp bulb from 80's or a crappy led. On an entry level watch!). The precision is... meh, not perfect but I don't care too much to gain or loose a second. My plan was to use the parts for other projects, I'll happily keep it. Oh, the plastic glass is horrible, but if you add a glass protector you can avoid scratches! All in all, I have ordered another Skmei (1848), let's see the overall quality. Ah, you say the big digits are more visible than the little ones... Yeah, becsuse tou have to think it like a cardboard on the top of a mirror, the bigger is the cutoff, the more you'll see the things. Ciao!
Oh yeah, the SKMEI 1628 (5600 clone) is a favourite of mine too! 🙌 Especially that epic backlight 🤩 Agreed, it’s a great option to keep around just for parts alone!! I put one of these in the freezer in a container of water for 16 hours. Frozen solid. Removed the strap to make sure the module got all the way frozen. Removed the ice with hot water, let sit for a few hours. It's perfectly fine.
@@goatreviews Yeah it does! Anyway, I've been wanting to do some stress tests on a Skmei for a while now. I was prepared for it to be destroyed. A really crappy watch will have water inside just from rinsing it with soap and water. I'm pretty impressed. I was skeptical if it could handle the dishwasher. It's fine! I've had different quartz watches that have lost time when left in the cold. It kept time perfectly the whole time. Thanks for letting me report my findings here lol!

Using this for a while now. I would say for the budget this is a excellent deal. Like where i live the casio is literally a luxury, f91w costs over 2k. So getting a low price beater nothing goes hetter than skmei.

I picked up a Skmei 1647 as a way to try a negative display before buying a negative Casio and I have to say, I was pretty thrilled with the quality of watch I got for $5. My big issue is the bracelet feels like poor quality, so perhaps I'd change that, but that's it. The viewing angles are much less generous, but for me that isn't an issue. I'm usually looking at the watch dead on anyway. The EL backlight is insanely good, putting some modern Casios to shame, even. I got a royale clone coming in, so I'll see how it holds up. Loved the video, and glad to see more Skmei reviews. My heart will always be with Casio for their quality at their price, but....these Skmei ones are great if you're on a budget, and awfully tempting to buy as beaters if you're not.

I agree, I don't like when SKMEI pust "SPORT" on the bezel. The 1628 is great, but it says "SPORT WATCH". I'd rather it says "SKMEI" or some sort of model name. But I do like SKMEI watches generally, value for money wise they are great.
It can be quite off-putting. I'm certainly glad I went with this colourway, where the "SPORT" text is at least somewhat subtle... Some of the other colourways make it a bit much! 😂 I too would prefer the text to say SKMEI, or even be left blank (I'm not the biggest fan of the SKMEI name in general TBH)
I used to wear a full metal Skmei-shock but recently got a cheap DW-5600 and put an after market metal kit on it. Happy with both. The genuine Gshock with the kit is better in my view but the Skmei is good for the money.

Here in Thailand these type of watches are everywhere as the locals are not able to always afford a casio. I even picked up a Sanda 6014(here in Thailand)as a beater watch, and it's been great

3:48 It looks like the keeper is on upside-down, the connected bit probably has the tab that softly locks on the strap, that bend on the separated side fitting to the bottom strap shape. 6:30 I've noticed that the clasp is a weak spot by observing my B640WD's bracelet. That being my absolute beater watch, I'm morbidly curious to which part breaks first on it. I'm assuming the different alarm test sounds have to do with some janky design in it's ICs. As long as it works reliably it's fine though, hard to hit a race condition (programming jargon) in a watch like this. 9:16 That's simply how polarisers can work. It's arranged to block the top polariser's light as it enters the crystal filter. Where it'll let the light through on activated digits. It's simply the opposite of normal positive LCDs.
Great point regarding the keeper! There’s definitely a chance that it’s been assembled upside down. To revert this, I could try removing the buckle and swapping it! 🤔💭 Interesting! I’m curious to see the results of that too. My clasp underwent quite a bit of force to get bent - I was swinging my arm at V-Ball and the corner of the buckle got caught on the net. Interesting… Agreed! 💯 the difference is barely perceptible, so not big deal - but noteworthy nonetheless! Ah cool, that makes sense! I wonder if it uses more battery power to keep a larger segment of the display “active” if you will. Also, I do think this SKMEI has substantially “deeper” looking digits that the other negative displays I’ve seen, as if there’s a larger gap between the layers 🤔

I actually like the acrylic glass, the scratches are not too difficult to buff out with polishing paste or even toothpaste. I really dislike mineral crystal though which the majority of watches use, it might be harder to scratch but when it does you can't really fix it. If I can't get sapphire glass on a watch, acrylic is the next best thing. The bezel on this watch put me off buying one but I suppose it could be glued on. 🤣

I can see where your dislike of mineral glass comes from for this reason. Personally, I am yet to experience any scratches on my mineral glass watches. Only the acrylic! 6:55 i think i can see why is that. in every watches with this exact same alarm function as skmei 1988, If you hold start at the main screen, that will be the sound of chime(it beeps everytime an hour as passed). if you hold start at the chime screen, that will be the sound of alarm

@@goatreviews my first was the 1123 which blew me away, then came the 2100, I don’t think it looks as good as the Casio GA, but in terms of comfort its better on the wrist. Then came the 1988, I’m kind of warming up to it, and I’m waiting for the 2126. because it looks good and it’s one of the few skmeis that have the backlight Button on the upper right. It’s not arrived yet, but I’m having high hopes for this one 😜

You could easily avoid featuring the word "SPORT" in that case 😄 True! It would be interesting to find a way to scratch if off without damaging the rest, and then colour matching the paint 😉

I totally understand the ppl who can't buy Casio watches, because they're either too expensive for their country or entirely accessible. What I will not understand is the ppl who promote this watch as a better and cheaper alternative to Casio, especially despite living in countries that are well off. What these clowns are doing is supporting companies that exploit cheap labour, and don't give a shit about their employees. If you want to buy Chinese goods, at least buy quality ones from well established companies, not Casio copycats like skmei.
My question would be, who decides on this definition of ‘expense and accessibility’, before it becomes ‘understandable’? IMHO, it’s not up to us to decide and judge other people’s circumstances. The best person to do that, is the person themselves. All I know is that my initial perspective on SKMEI was changed, thanks to numerous viewer comments imploring me to give the brand a try. I’m glad I gave it a shot, as I went from thinking of SKMEI as a “cheap rip off”, to “actually pretty good value” after owning one. Also, in terms of quality, while it’s not perfect - believe me - there are some DREADFUL clones out there that have made me realise that SKMEI is doing quite a good job. 😂 In fact I’ve just recorded a video in which I do some further comparisons and cover this specific topic. The reason for me? It was the most suggested watch by my viewers! So I bought it. The reason for other people? From what I’ve heard in the comments, some counties simply don’t have access to Casio products, and others just straight up can’t afford it. Have you owned a SKMEI before? In Thailand these are what the locals can afford. Lots of underdeveloped countries buy these, here in the USA I'm lucky to be able to afford a $50 casio. But I do wear a Sanda or SKMEI when I know my watch might end up damaged.

These watches will break down in a year's time, and even during that time they'll have numerous issues, such as poor accuracy. I still have a £10 Casio from more than a decade ago that still works and functions well, the time is barely off by a few seconds each year.

@@goatreviews my first was the 1123 which blew me away, then came the 2100, I don’t think it looks as good as the Casio GA, but in terms of comfort its better on the wrist. Then came the 1988, I’m kind of warming up to it, and I’m waiting for the 2126. because it looks good and it’s one of the few skmeis that have the backlight Button on the upper right. It’s not arrived yet, but I’m having high hopes for this one 😜

Cool review shame about the scratches and was just thinking the same about a 3d printed replacement bezal! Think I would repaint the Skmei 1988 on the back of the screen

For what they cost, it's a great deal! I wouldn't trust them to last anywhere near as long as a G-Shock though - You get what you pay for.

The SKMEI 1988 is very similar to a GBX-100, so you should be able to use a screen protector for that model.

I totally understand the ppl who can't buy Casio watches, because they're either too expensive for their country or entirely accessible.
What I will not understand is the ppl who promote this watch as a better and cheaper alternative to Casio, especially despite living in countries that are well off.
What these clowns are doing is supporting companies that exploit cheap labour, and don't give a shit about their employees.
If you want to buy Chinese goods, at least buy quality ones from well established companies, not Casio copycats like skmei.

IMHO, it’s not up to us to decide and judge other people’s circumstances. The best person to do that, is the person themselves.
All I know is that my initial perspective on SKMEI was changed, thanks to numerous viewer comments imploring me to give the brand a try. I’m glad I gave it a shot, as I went from thinking of SKMEI as a “cheap rip off”, to “actually pretty good value” after owning one.
Also, in terms of quality, while it’s not perfect - believe me - there are some DREADFUL clones out there that have made me realise that SKMEI is doing quite a good job. 😂

I own this watch and it isn’t my favorite skmei watch. I have the 12€ skmei 2100 and I prefer it to my casioak. Another one should arrive in the mail soon. This one is admittedly a bad example, but the quality skmei offers for the price is amazing.

The reason for other people? From what I’ve heard in the comments, some counties simply don’t have access to Casio products, and others just straight up can’t afford it.

In Thailand these are what the locals can afford. Lots of underdeveloped countries buy these, here in the USA I'm lucky to be able to afford a $50 casio. But I do wear a Sanda or SKMEI when I know my watch might end up damaged.

With Casios being so cheap, there is absolutely no excuse to buy a knockoff like this. Total trash is what it is. And that goes for the buyers too.
Casio's are relatively affordable - However there is definitely a market for this watch. From what I've heard from viewers, some demographics simply don't have access to Casio in their country, nor can they afford the $200 price tag.

Even my first ever digital watch wasn't even a Casio, despite how cheap they are in my country, it was from some unknown Chinese brand.
There's nothing more I find it infuriating than cheap misers in well off countries buying shit watches from child slave labour companies.
These watches will break down in a year's time, and even during that time they'll have numerous issues, such as poor accuracy.
I still have a £10 Casio from more than a decade ago that still works and functions well, the time is barely off by a few seconds each year.
