I remember black cats being the first mission I successfully completed on veteran, to this day I can't get that trophy, and I've been playing world at war since 08
Seriously I got that achievement in one go. But then again I had a mind set of the Japanese had weak armor and leading my shots and I was on regular mode.
What I also liked about this mission was that it showed a part of WWII in the Pacific theater that isn't really covered all that much, even in documentaries. Of course, other things aren't as widely talked about in the Pacific theater, like the B-17 Flying Fortress and P-51 Mustang and such, probably because they're seen as more symbolic of the European theater, but P-51s did escort B-29s.

Yes, yes. I'm pretty sure all lot of this particular soundtrack tries to create a sense of the things you are doing in the level. Such as that warship-like alarm going off in the background of this song. And the soft background ambience of 1:44 gives a sense of the wavy ocean, perhaps?

Open up comms! Major Gordon... Vessels are now in visual range. Unmarked Japanese merchant fleet, designation unknown. Gordon: (over radio) They're probably re-supplying the enemy on Okinawa. Booth: Legitimate targets? Gordon: (over radio) Affirmative. They're part of the enemy war machine. Permission to engage. Over and out. Booth: Roger that. Laughlin, Locke! Get to your stations! Start picking targets! Booth: Open fire!!! Keep it up!! Laughlin: WHOOAAHH!!! You see that shit blow?!!! After Mantaray passes the first merchant boat. Booth: Get on the rear gun! Taking MG fire on our six!!! Landry: Good job, Locke! Laughlin: Booom!!! Damn right they're resupplying the enemy! Decks are loaded with ammunition! After passing the second merchant boat, Harrington can be seen flying by. Harrington: (over radio) HEY!... Watch your fire there! Mantaray comes across the third merchant boat. Harrington: We got infantry on deck... Laughlin: Take 'em out. Booth: PT boat sunk. Nice shooting! Mantaray passes the third merchant ship. Booth: We're going in for another run. Harrington: (over radio) Echo that. Mantaray makes a turn to the right. Laughlin: Shit!!! Anyone see flak guns on that first pass?!!! Booth: Taking evasive action!... Everyone hold on! Booth: Damn that was close! Locke?!!! Shit! Tell me we've not lost our gunner! Landry: He's okay... Laughlin: What the fuck are merchant ships doing with that much firepower?! Locke's turret runs out of ammo, and the Zeroes close in for the kill on Mantaray, but in slow motion, they explode and fall into the ocean. Booth: How did we do? Landry's answer to Booth's question depends on how many men the player saved. Landry: We struck out! Just get us out of here. Landry: We only got one... Let's pray he makes it. Landry: We just got two, and they're in a bad way. Landry: There were too many damn Zeroes... We only got three. Landry: Locke did pretty good, we got four. Landry: We pulled five men on board. Good job, Locke. Landry: Bunks are full. Thanks to Locke, we got six men. Booth: Okay... Taking us home. Laughlin: Halle-fucking-lujah...
The music design of this mission is amazing. They use Japanese percussion instruments to sound like anti air fire while you are in each turret. The design of the soundtrack is literally interpreting Japanese firing towards your ship. GOD I LOVE THIS GAME!!! Every bit of this game has a fucking purpose to enhance your experience.
Hammerhead: I think it will hold as long as we don't run into any trouble with the enemy *Distress call* *Zero sound* Hammerhead: SH*T YOU HEAR THAT? Booth: ZEROS COMIN IN FAST
I prefer the Liberator mission from Big Red One. I felt like that one was even cooler, especially when you think of the limited resources they had to work with. A shame that they were forced/chose to go back on their word of making WWII games (In the premium edition of BRO, there were mini videos, and one of the things they mentioned that they wouldn't stop making WWII games)
This mission... I don't think I could take the blood pressure anymore. The music makes it sound like something's rattling the hull of the plane and it could fall apart at any moment. Plus the ever-decreasing effectiveness of the craft, as you run out of ammo and you've got to balance rescuing sailors and shooting the boats. And in those last few seconds, you've only got a few shots left and... Just at the last second, reinforcements arrive, ending quite possibly one of the best COD missions to date.
Look at this comment session, this is the REAL Call of Duty, that inspire people, not that trash that they invented today. I miss those good old days :/
I think it says a lot about how good the presentation of World at War was that one of the best missions in the game is basically just one big on rails turret level. But it doesn't feel like it, yeah? It's so intense.
Anyone else still hearing the kamakazis' diving and crashing, the sailors cry for help, and the shouting between your crew mates during the second half of this music?
Really captures the essence of what was happening in game. It was a suicidal run to save as many lives as possible. The Cats went in knowing they would likely never go home, but it isn't presented as a hopeless endeavor. They fly in like winged horrors, ready to spill their own blood.
How to be a comeplete badass on Men of War Assault Squad 2: Step One: Play as the Imperial Japanese. Step Two: Play this song. Step Three: Banzai Charge American swines. Step Four: ??? Step Five: Profit.
6:56 I really like this part of the song since it brings plays the theme of Sullivan's death/the music that plays during the pearl harbor part in the opening, almost like the music is trying to remind you why you're fighting
Also the transition scenes added a lot of realism when youre moving from the nose to the blister turrets and what not. The gunners moving around and ducking out of your way so you get past added a lot of detail.
When I first played WAW I didn’t really pay attention to the soundtracks but when I started replaying missions I listened to black cats I literally had chills 😂
Not true. Unless by "Real" you mean like WW2, and it was about war, no the characters. (Mactavish! PRICE) bc Ghosts and MW3 and 2 were good. Black Ops 2? A fucking JOKE
I really hate that they made characters in call of Duty like halo wtf? Just make it total war!! No character connection at all that's really stupid ...
The feel of this mission is so amazing. This music is absolutely perfect for the night flying and turret gunning, putting the tempo up for when you're performing those strafing runs and when you're on the water with Zeroes flying all around. So awesome.
God I’ll never forget this mission. This game made you feel desperate, not for yourself but desperate to save those around you. This game makes you feel like a soldier, not a hero, and I love it for that.
Listening to the soundtrack, it amazes me how terrifying it is, 8 year old me playing it then, now understanding that the developers did an amazing job communicating the horrors of war through the darkness and music of the game, only other cod that has a similar feel is a few missions on rising sun.the darkest and best cod for me
Like.. Dude... This is art... If you haven't noticed yet, those drums, seem to be heavy guns shoting. Then.... They accelerate.. A fast-paced beat to emulate the power of the bullets smashing on the pt boats Pure fucking art...
This was the best cod in my opinion captured the concept if war better than the rest. This song really hypes the explosions and gunfire and gives real anxiety to all the kamikaze pilots just dropping in at random
Just a reminder, Treyarch devs built a wooden 1:1 scale model Catalina inside their studio just to get the motion capture right for when you switch turrets. Their dedication to this game was honestly amazing.

I swear to god, COD 5 is probably one of the best Call Of Duties out there. The music, the adrenaline, and the action, no wonder why I played this when I was like 9 years old.
+Redsauce my fav was bo1, just the zombies was done perfectly and the campaign was a cool one with a really nice twist! i really liked the multiplayer aswell and nuketown :P

LOL, I am 13 years old so I played when I was 4 years old.
there was a lot of gore in that game soo 9 year old you were problaly hyped lol
Honestly, this game is more of a masterpiece than MW2. There I said it
Ha. Try saying that back then. Everyone shat on it cuz of MW2. People bitched because they went back to WW2. I remember wanting to play this and none of my friends went back with me. I ended up going back by myself. Honestly it’s kinda weird how everyone is now realizing how good this game was lol.
Wow u r so brave11!!q!
MW2 is just a fake propaganda kind of game. Plus like most CODs it praised war making it look fun. WaW is the only game I know of that pictures war as it should be, a brutal nightmare with men suffering and dying
This game is in my top 5 fav cod games, MW2 included
So brave, and so true.

['Black Cats']
[April 3, 1945]
[South of Okinawa]
[Petty Officer Locke]
[Black Cat Squadron VPB-54]
Harrington: (over radio) Boats, coming over them now.
Booth: Yeah, I see 'em. Landry!
Booth: That must be some pretty important cargo they're carrying.
Laughlin: We need to get below the flak! I can't line up a decent shot!
Booth: I hear you... We got MG fire all around. Take out those fucking PT Boats! They're our biggest threat right now!
Harrington: (over radio) This is getting too risky! Should we abort?
Booth: Negative. We can do this.
Landry: (If something breached in their plane) We've got a hull breach right above me!
Laughlin: Engine number one is smoking! We got smoke coming from our number two engine!
Booth: Takin' her down low! Locke, Laughlin, keep on them... Shoot out those damn spotlights! You put a lotta holes in that PT Boat.
Laughlin: Much more of this and we'll lose that engine! That's a hit!
Booth: Japanese PT boats! 9 o'clock! Get on the left turret!
Laughlin: You got it! Come here, ya little shit!
Booth: Pick your targets, Locke!
Mantaray passes the third merchant ship.
Laughlin: Shit. I think we disabled them, but they're still afloat.
Booth: I'll take us as close as we can... But we need to wrap this up! This is our last pass.
Harrington: (over radio) I think we got 'em all.
Laughlin: Oh, yeah... They're going down.
Booth: Good work, Locke. You've saved a lot of lives on Okinawa. We're done here... Get some altitude. Headin' back to base.
Harrington: (over radio) Echo that. We got pretty roughed up on that last run, Booth.
Landry: Confirmed, Hammerhead... You got smoke comin' from your number two engine.
Harrington: (over radio) Gauges ain't hitting red... We should be able to hold her... As long as we don't run into any more trouble with the enemy.
Landry: Oh hell... Captain... Distress call coming in... The fleet's been hit en route to Okinawa.
Landry: Air support's too far out... At least one Infantry transport ship has already gone down.
Booth: Okay... Locke, seal the ventral hatch. We'll be putting down on the ocean... Let's go get our men.
Harrington: SHIT! You hear that?
Booth: Zeroes! Right below us! Shit! Take down as many of those damn planes as you can! Get firing, Locke! Radio the fleet! Tell them Tojo's headed right at them! We've got Zeroes! Coming in fast!

Harrington: (over radio) I am trying! The controls are shot to hell!
Booth: Hold it together, HARRINGTON! HOLD IT TOGETHER!
Harrington: (over radio) Mayday! Mayday! We are going down, I say again we are going...
Hammerhead's damaged engine explodes, sending the PBY Catalina corkscrewing towards the water below after the wing is sheared off by the blast.
Booth: HARRINGTON!!! DAMN IT... We lost Hammerhead! We're on our own... Okay, people... the fleet still needs our help... Anyone want to back out? Didn't think so... We're going into a hot zone. I want everyone sharp and ready for anything. Bastards wiped out most of our ships.

Laughlin: Shit... Poor bastards...
Landry: We better not be the only ones responding to this distress call. We ain't got room for all of them.
Booth: We'll do what we can... Taking us down.
Mantaray drops to the water, and begins floating towards the destroyed American fleet.
Laughlin: Kamikazes! 2 o'clock! High!
The kamikaze planes crash themselves into the American ships.
Booth: INCOMING! RIGHT SIDE!
Landry: Sink those damn PT boats before they rip our men to shreds!
Booth: Zeroes!
Laughlin: 3 o'clock! High!
Booth: Shit... More PT Boats! 5 o'clock!
Landry: This is Black Cat Mantaray 54... The fleet is down. Repeat, the fleet is down! We have multiple casualties in the water! Taking heavy fire from enemy aircraft. Requesting immediate support!
Booth: Landry! Any word on that air support?
Landry: I'm getting nothing on the radio.
Booth: Keep trying... We better pray that they show up! INCOMING! LEFT SIDE! That was close!
Booth: 9 o'clock! Take out those fucking PT Boats!
Laughlin: Where the hell's that support?
Landry: There's no response!
Laughlin: Shit! We gotta go!
Booth: Not yet, Laughlin. We can't abandon our men!
Laughlin: Sons of bitches! 9 o'clock! 7 o'clock! 10 o'clock!

Mantaray shakes violently.
Booth: DAMN! We're hit! Laughlin! Make sure we're not taking water!
Laughlin: I'm on it!
Booth: Locke! Take his place on the dual 30.
Laughlin: Port side's pretty torn up, but we're holding!
Booth: Zeroes!
Landry: They're all around!
Booth: Keep 'em off what's left of the fleet! Locke! You need to take out some of those Zeroes before I can take us up! Stay on that trigger. It's all on you...
Zeroes begin to fly by.
Booth: 1 o'clock!
Laughlin: Shit! Ammo's running low! Right 50 Cal.'s almost out!
Landry: That ain't good!
Laughlin: Shit... Our right wing's torn up! 1 o'clock!
Booth: 1 o'clock!
Laughlin: Dammit! I'm out! Right turret's out of ammo! Left 50's almost out!
Laughlin: We got fire in the engine! Shit! We're out! Left turret's out of ammo! Booth, we gotta get out of here!
Booth: There's too many Zeroes! Let's hope there's enough left on the front! Locke! Make those shots count! 12 o'clock! We got Zeroes! Coming in fast!
Three Zeroes fly towards Mantaray. Locke's turret runs out of ammo, and the Zeroes close in for the kill on Mantaray, but in slow motion, they explode and fall into the ocean. Three American F4U Corsair planes pass over Mantaray, having shot the Zeroes down in an ambush with their own .50-caliber machine guns.
Corsair Pilot: (over radio) Black Cat Mantaray 54. Havok 26, coming over you now. We'll take it from here... Get yourselves back to base...
Booth: Landry, prep for takeoff! Laughlin, patch us up as best you can. Okay... Taking her up...

Probably one of the best moments in COD history. Soundtrack and level were both epic as hell.

That + this music = love.

Thou must agree with this squire's statement.
I came here to relive the good old WWII era of COD. And to also say how I feel bad for killing all them Japanese Soldiers. WAR SUCKS! ;-;

But it doesn't feel like it, yeah? It's so intense.
I love that WaW portrayed WW2 as the dark, gritty, horrifying experience it was, rather than glorifying and romanticizing it as many often do
The drum beats and the ship sirens really add to the adrenaline-rush factor of this song imo

Also the transition scenes added a lot of realism when youre moving from the nose to the blister turrets and what not. The gunners moving around and ducking out of your way so you get past added a lot of detail.
Imagine this shit with the technology of today. That'd give a hell of a lot of adrenaline. And PTSD
