This brings back so many memories, I absolutely loved this game when I played it. It was one of the few CoDs that I can say that about before I gave up on the series.
By far the most memorable and influential game of the series for me, Black Ops was well made and fun but that's just it, Black Ops was fun, not like this, the eastern front of WW2 can be described as many things but "fun" wouldn't be on anybody's list. It's by far the darkest of the series, and rightfully so, the Pacific Theater and Eastern Front of WW2 were some of humanity's lowest points, the Normandy landings looked like a fucking friendly game of football compared to the shit that happened on a daily basis on either of those fronts, I mean for Christ sake one of them contained the bloodiest single battle in human history, and the other ended with the first and only use of atomic weapons in war. Modern Warfare had it's share of dark moments, but nothing in those games could compare to the things you see in World at War, because all the crazy shit you see in Modern Warfare or Black Ops is all made up, but World at War? most of that shit is real, the things you see happened to somebody, sure they take a lot(a LOT) of creative liberties for the sake of gameplay, sometimes frustratingly so, but they succeeded in displaying the hateful evil nature of war.
The way this whole show is orchestrated almost brings tears to my eyes but most certainty gives me goosebumps. Gotta love the Imperial Japan theme, it brings heightened senses when the beat drops. You feel your eyes open wide and you go back to the first mission in the night. Stepping into traps unknowing of where the enemy is. You could be far from their sights or they could be right under you.
You reminisce the memories you created while tearing through the Eastern front and the Pacific.. You thought it was finally over, and that you could move on to Black Ops 1... Only to wake up on an airfield next to a burning plane, surrounded by shuffling and running figures with glowing eyes.
