Maybe but judging by the rant, it seems like McG is clueless in handling the situation, he just sat back and pretended he didn't see it happen. What director even does that?
@@Onmysheet Any director with any common sense would be firm, tell his lead actor he won't tolerate abusing the crew on the set, and demand he calm down and apologize before filming continues. McG just standing back and doing nothing shows how unprofessional he is.
@@seamusburke639 actually any good director wouldnt have crew members fucking with lights while the camera is rolling so that this kind of thing doesnt happen. Bale was over the top with it yes but he absolutely had a point. And McG is a carbuncle on the backside of humanity.
2:17 "I need some milk. It's been four days since I have had a decent source of calcium. Please, if you are out there, go to the fridge. Semi skimmed. This is John Connor"
Agree with Mark entirely regarding the reason for Bale's outburst - he realised that he was making a terrible movie and took it out on somebody who he perceived to be getting in the way of him possibly salvaging it.
I'm eagerly anticipating his Dark Fate review. Also, in defense of McG - Bill Murray has famously had physical smackdowns and verbal altercations with MANY people over the years. He punched Chevy Chase, dragged a producer across a table by the shirt collar when he was told he couldn't go home for a weekend (forget which movie that was but I think Jay Mohr told the story a while back), and had beef with Harold Ramis for years after Groundhog Day. So I wouldn't say it's a huge feat to piss off Bill Murray.
T1 was made for just over $6 million, T2 was nearly $100 million. I think people sometimes forget just how cheaply made the first Terminator was - and it only really shows during the scene in which Arnie is reparing his face, which was a bit rubbish. I often think people dismiss the film for that scene, but it's actually one of the last great sci-fi/action movies that was made completely without CGI and what they did on the budget was UNBELIEVABLE.
The repair scene is extraordinary. Can we tell that an animatronic was used? Yes, but it was a very, _very_ good animatronic, and shot very smartly. I’m consistently baffled by suggestions that the scene is poorly done. It’s like saying that King Kong is rubbish because we can tell that it’s a model gorilla. The face is done extremely well for its time, not simply for its budget.
I love T2. But the first Terminator is my favourite. I prefer the low budget, gritty realism to it, seems more terrifying. T3 is almost like a spoof. Salvation was a major letdown for me. The script wasn't good, the idea of Sam Worthington's character didn't work, the action was boring. It just didn't do the story arc justice at all. The only thing I liked in this was Anton Yelchin's perfomance as Kyle Reese, I think he channeled it pretty well.
Haha...Kermodes reviews are awesome! They are always brutally honest with no holds barred, ive stopped getting depressed and frustrated by the lack of good cinema because i know Marks reviews of trashy films will be entertaining. A national treasure!
My favourite part was whenever the terminator got its hands on a human, rather than crushing the humans bones or tearing it to pieces it threw them away, hardly the actions of an efficient robot killer & despite having an inbuilt targeting system & super mechanical strength that would mean recoil would not affect its aim, the terminator shoots worse than storm troopers & they also take humans as prisoners instead of killing them :/
+AgtX999 - I'm with you there. Remember the first film with that insanely awesome police station shootout - he hit's every copper he aims at. And he beats a guy to death with his hands, and punches his fist straight through the abdomen of another guy. I guess Skynet thought those models of Terminators were too violent even for machines.
yeah, n getting christian bale onboard was just a huge promotional item for the film, and I think Bale realised that himself. no wonder he lost the plot.
@I'M BATMAN - IT'S A PLANDEMIC But It's absolutely boring. There's no tension, you don't have any drive to root for the protagonist. In T1 & T2 it shows you how difficult it is to take a terminator down, even T3 showed it too, in Salvation Connor takes down 2 terminators with an assault rifle in the first 15 mins of the movie. Great movie logic right there!
@I'M BATMAN - IT'S A PLANDEMIC But the point is, the action scenes are boring. The future war we got in Salvation was NOTHING what we saw in the first two Terminators, all we got was this Mad Max style desert wasteland. We all know McG had no interest in making a Terminator movie.
The sad thing about the Terminator franchise is that after T2, by far the best thing to follow was the Sarah Connor Chronicals, and that got cancelled just as it was getting stupendously good.
I agree and can add more to that. T1 is the scariest, the most violent, the best soundtrack and the most seriously handled of all the Terminator films.
I find it kind of funny that Mark mentions that Michael Winner supported Christian Bale's outburst, considering that Winner has been accused by multiple people of being an abusive asshole on set.
Someone doesn’t lose his temper like Bale did over just a lighting issue. This is the kind of meltdown that only happens if your anger has been building for some time and probably due to several reasons. I’m sure Bale was unhappy with how the movie was turning out, regretted that he’d signed on, and didn’t like the people he was working with like McGeeeeeeee and the cinematographer. That’s not an excuse for his behavior, just an explanation. Bale’s career recovered. I can’t think of anything McGeeeeeeee and the cinematographer have done since this movie that’s noteworthy.
It was essentially a Sci Gi remake of The Great Escape Complete with a Motorcycle jumping an X shaped Barb wired fence , prisoners in train cars too etc on and on. Plus unfortunately it made humans looking dumb by falling prey to such loud crazy stomping machines and robots.
@ryanstiles I think Bale overreacted but he was absolutely right to get angry with the DP, especially after he had been told not to move the lights around beforehand. Still, you have to wonder why someone as talented and quite often daring as Bale would sign onto a movie this soulless.
Bale is probably quite aware of how bad the performance was- we're talking about a guy who lived on nothing but fruit for months on end for one performance. He'll be far more annoyed with himself than he would be with any reviewers for pointing it out.
I know. I'm pretty sure I first listened to this live and I was dying of laughter, especially because I had seen the film before the review. I was so excited to see the video but it never came. Maybe the cameras were broken...
McG is a knob! He describes Christian Bale's outburst as a moment where he just went overboard in a passionate atmosphere. Not quoting, but that's along the lines of what he said. Whilst Christian Bale is an intense and very focused actor i don't see him being someone who'd lose the plot like that unless it was for a very good reason. McG hasn't a clue how to direct on a movie set, nor has he the ability to coax good performances out of actors. This Means War is another example of how he can make great actors look vioristic and dire.
Terminator 3 is a good film in it's own way, it just lacked the emotion of Terminator 2. It's 10 years old and the effects are still great to this day.
@sanitybug Also check out the review of Mamma Mia (if you haven't found it yet). It's my favourite one. Kermode's delivery is just great all the time, but it's best when he either hates or adores something.
The idea behind it was a step in the right direction, (I don't think I could've tolerated seeing Arnie traveling back in time yet again), it was just poorly executed. I couldn't stand Bale in it, why didn't they just use Worthington in the role?
I believe sometimes actors have to accept certain crap roles from production compaies in order to be awarded roles they really want. I understand this is Bale we are talking about, but to be honest I would not be in the least surprised if even A list actors and the top movie stars still have to go through this by the way the world is turning.
I enjoy watching T4, Salivation, cos it is like Arnie will be old in a nursing home and his drivel will shortcircuit him. Promethues, A.K.A Cameron will do something interesting (T2 aside), and he'll use any realistic effects whatsoevah, like a snake with a lisp, promethus, promethus, promethus.
no sorry, i was with you all the way until you mentioned loach - the man who makes films for people who already 100% agree with him but who enjoy feeling guilty about not being destitute.
I knew it would all end badly as soon as they insisted on making so many sequels for the Terminator. I mean fuck it, why not just complete the set and make a 'U' certificate film? Terminator was NEVER meant to be a family friendly action series. The original was a dark, violent dystopian tale with a hint of hope. PS: I like Christian Bale. Yes he's an intense, complicated character, but he often puts that into his performances, which is why I wasn't surprised by his outburst on set.
When he said "Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, I'm being directed by McG", I couldn't stop laughing :D
Great Review !!
jack wilson He's so right though McG is a shit director he's as bad as Michael Bay
As much as I don't like Michael Bay, i would watch any of his movies 365 days over a McG movie.
+Onmysheet true there mate same
Same. An insightful and hilarious take on that whole situation.
This is one of Mark Kermode's funniest reviews and I come back to it from time to time whenever I need a laugh.
heehee. that's what I'm doing here now. we're dining out on this one for years
"Life threateningly dull" is a phrase I need to use more often.
I think Bale's meltdown was his attempt at trying to get himself fired.

'McGee is like Michael bays untalented cousin' I think that has to be the harshest insult iv heard in a loooooong time! 😂
Brutal
That killed me 😂
"Ive woken up! Im in a movie directed by McGeee!!"
"I'm in Charlie's Angels 3!"
2:17 "I need some milk. It's been four days since I have had a decent source of calcium. Please, if you are out there, go to the fridge. Semi skimmed. This is John Connor"
Kermode is so funny. A great critic.
6:47 is the best sound ever!!!
"McGeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
One of the greatest reviews
Kermodes' Husky Yorkshire accent* " HE TALKS LIIKE THAT."
Agree with Mark entirely regarding the reason for Bale's outburst - he realised that he was making a terrible movie and took it out on somebody who he perceived to be getting in the way of him possibly salvaging it.

McG wasn't even the only person Bill Murray tangled with on the set of that movie....Lucy Liu, anyone?

I think Aliens was the last sci fi film to use no CGI. The practical effects still hold up very well today.
Greatest Kermode Review Ever.
I just love Kermodes laugh at 9:17
mcgeeee! mcgeeee!
can you stop that now?
no i cant!...because thats his name!
LMAO
the 'almost yorkshire bit' creased me up too

Definitley one of my favourite Kermode reviews
:)
McGEEEEEEEEEEE xD HAHAH
"Oh my god, I'm in a film being directed by McGEEEEEEE!"
...Hmm, never thought of it that way before. Yea, I'd flip out at a DP too.
"mcg is like michael bay's untalented cousin", wow.. that is just.. I can't even describe how awesome his trolling is
Haha...Kermodes reviews are awesome! They are always brutally honest with no holds barred, ive stopped getting depressed and frustrated by the lack of good cinema because i know Marks reviews of trashy films will be entertaining. A national treasure!
Christian Bale's rant is the same as my reaction after watching Terminator Salvation.....

McGeeeeeees start at 04:05.
HAHA So funny
Choosing McG to direct this movie show's you how lazy the producers were. That is enough proof that they weren't taking this sequel seriously.
yeah, n getting christian bale onboard was just a huge promotional item for the film, and I think Bale realised that himself. no wonder he lost the plot.
ASobsessive It looks like they've did it again with Terminator Genesis, by hiring Arnie.
I bought Terminator Genesys and immediately regretted after I watched it. Absolute pants film.
@I'M BATMAN - IT'S A PLANDEMIC But It's absolutely boring. There's no tension, you don't have any drive to root for the protagonist. So far, my favourite Bale film is Equilibrium. I loved the '1984' meets 'Matrix' theme.
The sad thing about the Terminator franchise is that after T2, by far the best thing to follow was the Sarah Connor Chronicals, and that got cancelled just as it was getting stupendously good.
Classic! Love his take on why Bale exploded.
"Life threateningly dull."
XD
McG!
Love the way he says that.
I still remember when Christian Bale was part of the masterpiece that was Empire of the Sun! Anyone else?!
I agree and can add more to that. T1 is the scariest, the most violent, the best soundtrack and the most seriously handled of all the Terminator films.
For real
Oh I know i'm probably a little bit mature for laughing so hard, but whenever Kermode did the McG thing, I couldn't stop laughing
No it is very funny xD McGeeeeeee
I find it kind of funny that Mark mentions that Michael Winner supported Christian Bale's outburst, considering that Winner has been accused by multiple people of being an abusive asshole on set.
The only thing I learned from this video is Mc GEEEEEEEEEE
the whole of history of shit cinema was building to this epic 10 minutes of a review so glad it still lives
Someone doesn’t lose his temper like Bale did over just a lighting issue. This is the kind of meltdown that only happens if your anger has been building for some time and probably due to several reasons. Yes, A Truly CLASSIC Kermodian Rantaphasitc Slaggathon
This is a wild and funny review
Terminator 4...the film is a machine
what annoyed me most was that in this apocalyptic wasteland all of the female characters have perfect makeup
Mc GEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
I watched this now and again it’s absolutely joyful. Hilarious.
Mcgggggeeeee!! Play the drinking game! It's great with this video!
Micheal Winner defends Christian Bale... that's a credential right there.
Yeah I don't think Christian Bale would want that on his resume haha.
Ironic seeing as how he spent years telling people to "calm down dear" in those awful car insurance adverts.
I’m glad someone else picked up on that. When your main defender is an abusive perv 😬
Cameron used dedication to make what T1 turned out to be.
Doesn’t change the fact that guy who plays let’s pretend for a living had a hissy fit

I'm irritated that Kermode has essentially absolved Bale of any blame for his ludicrously childish outburst.
Sadly, I don't think it is.
Kermode is so funny!!
"McGeeeee" is up there with "Zack Snyder".
Bale is probably quite aware of how bad the performance was- we're talking about a guy who lived on nothing but fruit for months on end for one performance. He'll be far more annoyed with himself than he would be with any reviewers for pointing it out.
McGiiiiiii. :D
The original Terminator is one of the best films ever. This is poopey do
Isn't McG the producer on Supernatural.
I still like the A10 Warthog scene even though the pilots were fools
I'm pretty sure Bale's outburst was an attempt to get fired, he didn't even want to be in this movie in the first place.
mcGEEEE!
3:17 nice impression, lol
john conners irish is he ?
"McGee !!!!" hahahahahahaha
I know. I'm pretty sure I first listened to this live and I was dying of laughter, especially because I had seen the film before the review. I was so excited to see the video but it never came. Maybe the cameras were broken...
Kermode rants are really something else.
He's right, the movie fell flat.
mc geeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
re bales vocal performance: but when in the movie does he ever order milk ? so the tension and anxiety in the voice is legitamate
waiting for the kermode rant with bale
@DeckyStrikesBack Yeah, and a CGI Arnie doesn't cut it either.
Yes, A Truly CLASSIC Kermodian Rantaphasitc Cacophanacious Slaggathon

Did you spell that right? Don't get me wrong or anything but I just couldn't find the definition on Google.
What does 'goner' mean?
@sanitybug his review of Star Trek's positive and oddly warm. It's kind of weird hearing the good doctor in praise mode.
Terminator 3 is a good film in it's own way, it just lacked the emotion of Terminator 2. It's 10 years old and the effects are still great to this day.
But did you like it?
@sanitybug Hath portention occurred?
I see.

In what way?

Kermode to Mc Geee : "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!!" : )
Why is that?
AHHHH ! im being directed by Mc Gee!
The idea behind it was a step in the right direction, (I don't think I could've tolerated seeing Arnie traveling back in time yet again), it was just poorly executed. I couldn't stand Bale in it, why didn't they just use Worthington in the role?
It actually isn't that bad - gets better on repeat viewings. Has many flaws, but it doesn't claim to be Kaufman or Nolan
somewhere in amongst the mess of Salvation was a great movie trying to get out..
Really! They should've hired a better director and scriptwriter.
I agree it was terrible.
They needed to have a arch that fit with what was done before. This was just a stupid rehash of what had been done before.
I'd like to see a Batman film where Batman has a yorkshire accent.
I believe sometimes actors have to accept certain crap roles from production compaies in order to be awarded roles they really want. I understand this is Bale we are talking about, but to be honest I would not be in the least surprised if even A list actors and the top movie stars still have to go through this by the way the world is turning.
Why is Bale lisping?
Because he figured out that he didn't need to put the effort into enunciating words for this dungheap of a movie.
Well played Sir, well played.
he actually has a lisp. he does it in batman too.
He has always had an obvious lisp. Even in Empire of The Sun he had it.
Absolutely agree.
McGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I enjoy watching T4, Salivation, cos it is like Arnie will be old in a nursing home and his drivel will shortcircuit him. Promethues, A.K.A Cameron will do something interesting (T2 aside), and he'll use any realistic effects whatsoevah, like a snake with a lisp, promethus, promethus, promethus.
Why did Christian Bale do it? He has no judgement?
Oddly enough, I thought Kermode once said he thought T1 was better than T2.
no sorry, i was with you all the way until you mentioned loach - the man who makes films for people who already 100% agree with him but who enjoy feeling guilty about not being destitute.
I liked T4, not as good as T2 (obviously), but I liked it.
I knew it would all end badly as soon as they insisted on making so many sequels for the Terminator. I mean fuck it, why not just complete the set and make a 'U' certificate film? Terminator was NEVER meant to be a family friendly action series. The original was a dark, violent dystopian tale with a hint of hope.

the terminator 3 is my favorite terminator movie.
