- Retron 5 review! classicgameroom...
Classic Game Room reviews the Hyperkin Retron 5 video game system that plays Sega Genesis. Super Nintendo, NES, Famicom, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, Super Famicom and Sega Master System games through HDMI using magic... or something. The Retron 5 is a hotbed of controversy because it plays games digitally instead of using analog outputs like a real Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis or anything else made in the 20th century. The games are incredibly sharp and crystal clear with that "emulated" look, although the Retro 5 gives many filter and scan line options. It works with Super Nintendo, NES and Sega Genesis controllers which is great because the wireless controller that comes with the Retron 5 is garbage. CGR Hyperkin Retron 5 video review features gameplay from a wide variety of games being played on Retron 5. It works well with Gameboy and even plays Super Famicom and PAL Super NIntendo games!
"Just screw it all! buy a Neo Geo!"
Great words from a great man.
I think the only controversy is the way they stole and profited off other peoples work, namely the emulators they used.
Exactly, did you see the 'apology' they wrote? It's akin to 'if i hurt anyones feeling then i apologize'. I hope they get sued out of business.
No one gives a fuck
Medicint20 I hope you didn't pay for the whole seat.
Medicint20 Apparently you gave enough fucks to respond and tell everyone how much nobody supposidly gives a fuck.
Worldgate989 I see you everywhere dude! Hi !

This system is meant for those who wish to enjoy some of there favorite old games with out having to buy an old console and CRT TV.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for not doing the "Wah but it's a emulation machine blah blah blah" comment.
To each their own I guess. For people that do collect cartridges and don't have space for 5+ consoles in their entertainment center and don't mind the emulation side of things, the Retron 5 makes sense. I understand people are pissed at Hyperkin for using the emulators in the console without permission from the developers, but it is what it is. Bitching and moaning about it is beating a dead horse. They (said bitch and moaners) aren't going to stop the people that want a Retron 5 from buying one. Of course the retro gaming enthusiasts whine about the emulation but that is literally nitpicking, they don't have to buy one, but they also need to get over it and move on as there is nothing they can do about it.
You have many people around commenting to just use an emulator rather than using old consoles and cartridges. Those are the ones who are ignorant in the enjoyment of classic/retro gaming and game console and game collecting. Not everything in life is about doing everything the cheapest or easiest way.
but even though CRT tvs do make a better image you can use HDTVs only that the image is sorta bad compared to CRT
TheMistakenGoomba HDTVs make a better image, thats a fact. It's just that old game developers used the shortcomings of CRTs to their advantage. Pixelation was made softer by the fact that everything sort of blends together with the low quality signal. Interlacing was used as a trick to allow more things to be drawn onscreen, and when a modern TV deinterlaces it, the true image is revealed.
So I wouldn't go out of my way to say they make a better image because they don't. If the goal of a TV is to be able to reproduce an image from a source, LCD wins.
In my opinion this has a place. I may have the old systems and games and controllers but this is one system i can hook up and have all my games for casual play. Less clutter attached to my tv is a great thing. I do agree all of these new controllers blow.
"I don't have an engineering term for you. I draw a comic book about a squid that flies through space"
= )) You sir are the best
will it play retron 5 games though?
Nope, not compatible.
Try Retron 17. It plays Retron 5 games on Wednesdays, as long as you have the Retron 13 adaptor disk and Retron 4 Composite-to-HDMI splitter-adaptor-cartridge-exploder pack inserted into the Retron 6 pro-trinity-infinity co-axial-to-USB-to-S-Video converter...
Provided that you sacrificed 9 Retron 11 cartridges on the night of a new moon 4 days prior to playing the Retron 5 game. Hope that helps.
@@Synathidy I hope you're proud
@@itadapeeza8559 lol you beat me to it
@@Synathidy Pretty good fucking neo geo
You can bypass the "unknown cartridge". Just press start... its that easy.... Pier Solar works
On the other hand I think controversy shouldn't be viewed as positive. They stole someone else's emulator work, put it on their systems, which they sell for profit. That's bad.
It's open source emulator. I'd call that a grey area since it's free to use. But I do agree that charging for it is a little shady, but the argument can be made that you aren't actually paying for the emulator, but that this emulator comes pre-installed on the hardware that you did pay for.
Soylant Green!! Rabbits love people. I lost it after that
I AM OUTRAGED THAT THE CONSOLE I USE TO PLAY THE THOUSANDS OF ILLEGAL ROMS I'VE DOWNLOADED RUNS ON STOLEN CODE!!!
I was really hyped to get a Retron 5 but after your review I think I'll pass. I can download and play emulated games myself, I don't need an oversized-overpriced box for it. Thank you!
I'm a fan of the Retron 5 for its convenience. If I ever want the real experience the consoles are there, but for all other times I can keep the Retron 5 hooked up in my living room and save whenever I want. The HD output is fantastic as well.
I knew this would be a good review, and you didn't disappoint. Thanks!!
I bought one back in June of 2014. I found it to be a good way to enjoy those old game while condensing all those consoles into one unit. Output to HDMI was find with me.
I now have on my gaming shelf the ability to cover all the generations of video game consoles of the past 30 years.
I'm a classic/retro gamer, and an everyday gamer. This system fits me like a glove. HD, save states, multiple console support. Sure there's a few minor issues but what clone console doesn't have a few issues. My vintage systems are getting old and need to be retired, that's where this comes in. It shouldn't matter how you enjoy your games. I love how my 25 year old games can look like new again.
RETRON CD
Turbo cd, Sega CD, Satrun, 3do, juaguar cd, PS1, Dreamcast & PS2.
Lunitaproductions Santana Lorenzo and CDi
No PS2 gamecube instead
You literally just predicted the polymegas cd console
Sounds way too expensive to make and could take a lot of space
'Why would you stop playing Thunderforce 2?' Well, if they had a 2-in-1 cart with Thunderforce 2 and Truxton, you might have a point. But otherwise? Come on, Mark :)
I think this console is absolutely great. I personally own all of the systems that this console plays however I still find a use for it. The main thing is it plays all of these through the use of only one HDMI port (which is great because then all of my inputs aren't taken up. The picture is crystal clear. The wireless controller is far from terrible but of course I prefer the originals. With built in save states, game genie, and the ability to use TRANSLATION PATCHES/Rom Hacks (which no one seems to mention) I think it's a no brainer to own one. Compatibility updates happen often with firmware updates and I've had no issue getting any games to work and I have literally hundreds of games including Reproduction cartridges. I don't understand why this is getting such hate from reviewers.
I bought my system before the controversy with the emulation software started and if I'd known that before hand I wouldn't have purchased it. Other then that it works pretty good for what it does. The biggest problem is how it holds onto the games. I let my 8 year old use the system and he messed up the pin connectors in one of the slots trying to pull the game out. So then I had to send it back to be replaced. So moral of the story is don't let your child have fun with something that supposed to be used to have fun.
Atleast they replaced it. I live in Canada and got told they refuse to honor the warranty for Canada and that to get a working one I have to go buy another one. The retailer I bought it from told me that I had to go to Hyperkin to get it fixed. Now I am stuck with a $200 console that does nothing and I paid more than Americans did because of the Canadian dollar being weaker.
Yeah I'll never buy anything from hyperkin again. I was so pumped for it and it was the biggest let down.
Capn Cummings
I am going to file a complaint with the better business bureau against them. Even if it doesn't gain me anything it still leaves a mark on them. I have already cost them a bunch of sales for the console because I have told everyone about how faulty they were and that Hyperkin won't replace it.
I won't ever buy their stuff again either. They are a shitty company who won't stand by their products and companies like that don't deserve support.
There is one major advantage to owning a Retron 5. With a recent update, you can play English translations on your actual Japanese cartridges with the help of translation patches. The Retron 5 dumps the ROM from the cartridge and applies the patch on start up. I was able to play through Seiken Densetsu 3 in English, then load the save back on to the cartridge after I beat it. This alone makes the Retron 5 completely worth it as it gives me the justification to collect more Japanese games.
The sound that controller makes made my day!
I lost it at the Soylent Green part! "Rabbits love people! Mmmmm... protein!" XD
The big thing is it's convenience. If you want to play all your oldschool games on your big screen HD TV. Also you never have to use that horrid controller, you can use any controller (NES/SNES/GEN) to navigate the menus.
What I love about my Retron 5 is using the save and load buttons right on the controller to help me beat games I've never gotten to the end of before. My first games I tried on it was GB: Pokemon Yellow, GBA: River City Ransom, SNES: U.N. squadron, NES: Pinbot. I haven't tried it with the native controllers and yea the controler that comes with it needs an upgrade. I also like the filters it will add to soften the pixels or add scanlines to give it a very authentic feel. I've never really owned a Genesis and don't have any games, but my local used game store has plenty and I can't wait to buy my first Genesis game.
Personally I'd rather have the Retron 3. It plays less games, indeed, but it's a console-on-a-chip rather than an emulator that won't play roms from USB/SD cards. If I want to emulate I'll get a Raspberry Pi or just use a PC.
You can just use the device you're on right now, just get a USB or bluetooth controller and you're good to go. The Retron 5 uses the same emulators (which they didn't get permission to use) anyway.
That's my point, except personally I prefer actual hardware, even if it's cloned.
THERE IS IT AGAIN! Had the message for this video in my inbox a few days earlier. I couldn't find it on your channel when I later checked though.
He still remembers the Hyper Scan!
Nice Mark! I've been waiting for your review ever since.
It is basically an emulator machine... it rips the ROMs straight off the cart when you insert it, runs it from internal memory via stolen "open source" emulator code, and deletes it again when you remove the cart.
I've heard that the most recent firmware updates fix that massive compatiblity flaw of it being unable to run unrecognized carts too, but not owning one myself I can't say for sure, so be sure that your firmware IS up to date... I think it updates via SD card.
I have one and I have all the old consoles. I use the retron so I don't wear out the old consoles.
Hey everyone, I am a proud owner of a black Retron 5. I have the real consoles and controllers and such. I even have a Retron 3. I love playing my games the real way, but...I am a father of a 2 year old. I have quite a few friends who come over to play games. My dedicated game room is not spacious. It is great for 3 people, 4 in a pinch.
I have the Retron 5 in the living room on the HD TV, Games look great on it. I like playing around with filters, but I don't really use them, except for the scan lines. I use scan lines for everything but the game boy/color/advance games. As a dad and full time employee, I don't have a lot of time. i don't cheat with it, but I do use save state to save me some time.
The controller is mostly garbage, and it is all because of the stick. Why didn't they just use a Dpad? But like he said in the video, you can use any controller for any game. That solves my problem of not loving the genesis controller. I can play Contra Hard Corps with a SNES controller.
There are some regular games that are still incompatible. Mach Rider, never worked on the Retron 3 and still doesn't work on the 5 last I checked, there might be a new update I don't know.
Don't pay a ridulous price for it, but it it works for your life, then get one!
Been subscribed since 100k,love these reviews, been my birthday recently too, didn't have a big party, but watched a review and it made me happy:D
I can tell you what it does, it saves me alot of cash if I want to review older games on any of the consoles it can play as well as saves me the trouble of having a million cords for several different systems running all over the place.
Look at the.....Swag that our Mark handles this review with! You really get the very FEEL of the product in question threw your God damn computer screen! I have you know that this is not an easy thing to pull off! And yet he seems to do it all with such ease! It's awesome, I really don't have anything else to say!
Why WOULD you stop playing Thunderforce...?
So you could play 3 or 4, which were both way better than 2 :-)
Couldn't agree more, 2 would have been great if not for the god awful top down gameplay. The horizontal stages are actually quite fun.
This would be really cool to have!
Don't get it it holds on to the cartridges too tight and over time the pins will break in like a month if your lucky
It does the job well but I regret getting it. It feels wrong just like Mark said.
Go with the retron 3 instead
Hey Mark, love the reviews. The reason that it can output in HDMI is (probably) because they've omitted the video DAC and just dump the original internal format, RGB, from the framebuffer to HDMI. PS: it seems to dump the game nevertheless, which makes me think there's emulation going on on some ARM processor.
That rabbit was licking Spongebob's hand so apparently it loves spongy people as well.
I don't understand this console. Even if you don't have the original game console but you want to play on a real hardware, it's pointless because this is just a big emulator. If you don't care about real hardware and stuff, you don't buy a Retron 5, you download a free emulator on the net!
It's just pointless.
MARK!!! I MUST KNOW WHAT THIS SEXY MUSIC IS!!! I DEMAND CLASSIC GAME ROOM TO PROVIDE LINKS FOR YOUR MUSIC!!! But in all seriousness, i've been a long time fan of the show and I love every episode. Good luck on your never ending quest to review everyrhing
What is the game at 4:19? I thought Roundabout came up with that concept.
Great, the makers are incompetent AND criminal. Double Combo!
"It has the pure digital emulated look", because it's an emulator. The only thing it does different than a normal emulator, is that it doesn't run downloaded roms, it rips the rom file from a real cartridge. It's still playing roms through emulation.
Also, anyone that has a Retron 5 that has the ability to run roms on it, because I know it's possible with recent updates using certain methods. Would anyone be able to run an NES Palette Viewer rom on the Retron 5, and get a high quality screenshot of it? I'd like to get the palette that it uses for NES games, and no one seems to have gotten it yet.
Yeah Mark makes a good point, people so much into these retro games will just own the consoles. I feel like this system was made for more casual retro play (nothing wrong with that) but in that case, a wii virtual-console should do the job for them.
Here is why I like the system:
You don't need the retron controller, just press up and start to go to the menu. You could throw the controller in the trash lol
You can translate foreign games into english
You can use a digital to analog converter if you want to play it on a CRT
Little to no lag on modern TVs, although you still need to put the TV in game mode
Since firmware 2.1, the original gameboy games are in color now, uses the color schemes that the gameboy color uses
Not sure about this one but I heard you can play 32X games with the 32x adapter without using the AV cables.
+bluemetal04 what do you mean it translates foreign games? can that be true?
+a subterranean dork Yeah... Sounds like bullshit to me.
a subterranean dork You can use ROM translation patches
James Cree You may want to do some research before you call something BS. It can use rom translation patches to translate games.
+bluemetal04 That's not a feature of the retron. You can do that to any ROM and play it on anything capable of playing said ROMs. So yeah, bullshit.
I think the audience is people who don't want to keep switching between their multiple systems. I have a famicom. super famicom, megadrive, playstation, playstation 2, NEOGEO, Gamecube and a few other systems and switching between all of the old school stuff is pretty annoying.
It appeals to me because I like playing games with the original controllers and on the original cartridges, but also I'm keen on the perks of it - one console that takes up one HDMI port (and upscales the output) instead of a stack of old consoles that take up co-axial and composite ports willy-nilly. Also be convenient to have the Famicom, Super Famicom and American NES/SNES/Genesis support since I don't own those consoles or converters to work with them.
Nonetheless, I'm disappointed with how lacking the company was with this prior to its release, and of course how difficult they are to get hold of in the UK without paying inflated eBay prices. So I'm saving my cash until I can get hold of one of these at the £50 mark, or a better alternative is released :P
I have the black version. When I got it, I did not even need to use the crappy controller that came with it. I just plugged in a Genesis or a SNES controller and was able to navigate through the menu and settings with those. I have the original consoles to play the games on. Just happened to got another Genesis 1 console the other day. I prefer using the original hardware, but the Retron 5 is a cool device to have in a game console collection. Kind of neat how it upgrades the graphics and you can save games and can come in helpful if an older console dies and you want something to play your game cartridges on. Since it also plays Famicom games, I might even start collecting a few of those games as well as a Gameboy Advance games.
Ah, corrected. Based Mark :) Still doesn't change the fact that it's an emu machine, so I couldn't give a damn about it lol. If I want to emulate i'll buy something cheaper, if I want to play my real games I'll play those.
Whats the first game video you had ? Looked good.
I had sooooo many tiger handhelds as a kid... even that same double dragon one... lol
I'm the market for this. I didn't already own the consoles, and I didn't want to have the clutter. So I bought this and a bunch of retro games. Also, it works with translation patches, so I can buy a real cart from Japan and patch it into English!
The big problem with the Retron 5 is that Hyperkin straight-up stole a lot of the emulation code to make this thing work. It doesn't really matter if the product is good or bad because the creators should not be financially rewarded for stealing. Not a knock against your review Mark, but this is something people need to know about.
Idk, if i'm not gonna play it on the original system i might as well just download an emulator for PC and play with a 360 controller? works fine for me
I'm leaving for College in a few years, so I'll probably buy one. WHEN the build quality improves or a newer better model comes out.
+KaBlamBandicoot64 Aparently the ones with the black dust cover are a newer model and they are generally better, still shit controllers though.
Retron 5 has one more huge thing going for it. It allows patches. Which means being able to have your Japanese games translated without having to buy a flashcart or reproductions. Also being able to play game hacks like sonic mega mix and mario unlimited.
I can't wait to see how companies like Hyperkin do clone consoles for optical media. Has there been anything from any company about how they plan to make clone consoles for the PS1, original Xbox, or Gamecube?
I doubt it'll happen for original Xbox, as there was actually an emulator being made for it and Microsoft shut it down, so..
yes the same company DOES that already
Retron 5 and RetroFreak are the way to go. The Retron 3 looks better than my Super Famicom. The only system I really like original hardware is the original Red White Famicom. Looks GREAT. But clone/ROM consoles are great too. I collect consoles and I like any company like Hyperkin interested in my needs.
I might pick one of these up one day just to backup saved game data
The deleting saves off a cartridge is a bug. Update to the newest firmware.
thanks for showing briefly the double dragon lcd game. i recognised that!
I don't see any problems. I was going to buy it before and still am.
well a few years later i guess they really fixed this. i picked one up the other day and its great. even plays my reproduction cart of SweetHome on NES. also the carts dont get stuck
There is a black version with slightly loosed cart slots, i want one of these for my TV setup i have limited space for my (active) consoles and old games look terrible on flat screens so this seems like the perfect solution however i only have 2 hdmi ports on my TV, shame this doesn't support component or something
.
Now we just need a disk based version that does Saturn, ps1, Mega CD, CDi, neogeo disks,... ect
If you have all or most the consoles this system plays and a lot of games for these consoles then the Retron 5 is a good buy. Especially if you own a modern 4K TV.
"I was about to stomp on this thing"
I want it! It looks like it's for those who want to play their old games all in one place via HDMI.
I don't like how my SNES looks on an HDTV, this more or less solves the problem, as well as providing an HD solution for Gameboy games.
Now Mark get yourself a Super Retro Trio so you can see what a truly awesome clone console is. Sure you don't get the save states and HDMI, but what you do get is a console that plays move games than the Retron5. The only game that had trouble on the Sega Genesis side is Virtua Racing and it's a simple mode on the game cart that fixes that problem. The Super Retro Trio is superior to the Retron5 in all ways possible, even if it only has S Video instead of HDMI.
It's so weird that they went with a stick instead of a normal d-pad for the controller. Sure the stick would be nice for fighting games, but it's not ideal for platformers. Why didn't they include both? At least they let you use your own controllers, but putting the ports on the sides is pretty dumb. They should at least put the player 1 inputs on the front.
It's also really bizarre that you have to hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn the damn thing on. The super-tight fit of the carts is the dealbreaker for me though. I'm not putting my precious SNES and Genesis carts in that thing and then have them get almost stuck in there.
This could be useful if you're short on space though, and have a ton of carts laying around. Might as well just emulate on PC or PSP though, since that's all you're doing with this thing.
They've fixed the power up issue w/ a patch. Now it's barely a second.
I imported a Retron 5 quite some time ago, it was well worth the investment as it means I don't need to have 4 systems set up to play my retro stuff and I can play them all on my HDTV with a SNES pad.
Maybe some 'hardcore' game collectors will look down on me for it but at the end of the day it makes my playing experience so much simpler.
My one complaint would be the build quality, it does feel cheap and the pad is kind of rubbish but given how much this system does and how much easier it makes playing retro games on new TVs it is a small price to play.
you sound so cool with your retro stuff. gtfo loser. my pc can run all your retro games way better than their original console. you console peasants make me sick.
Cvtyuc That is some poor poor bait.
Cvtyuc Yup clearly trying to be a troll but failed lol
***** wow, need a tampon? Good thing the retron 5 has a speed load button. And is wicked fast, so yeah, many of us like to collect and play.
Dude, no worries. Many hardcore gamers like Mike Matei and Alpha Omega Sin have a retron 5. I do as well. :) it's freaking cool.
Concerning removing the cartridges: to make it easier- lift out one side of the cartridge first before lifting the other side out which will make it easier to remove cartridges.
Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, When I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this!
+Lord Karnage The makers of Retron 5 created and sold it using emulator code without the emulator developer's permission. It is literally several emulators in hardware form.
The japanese gameboy rabbit game is called “Nakayoshi Pet Series 2: Kawaii Usagi”
One thing missing in this review is that you can play patched versions of the actual cartridges. So if you say have a Final Fantasy V Cart for Super Famicom, you can play the English patch of it on the Retron 5.
This might sound crazy but I really like playing GBA games on my Retron 5 as opposed to the Gamcubes GBA player. I know its a emulation console but its really nice that you get more filter options and it plays in 720p as opposed to the Gamcubes 480p via component cables. Not to mention I'd rather play GBA games with a Super Nintendo controller than a GameCube controller. It just feels more natural and not so bulky like the GameCube controller. This is coming from someone who has a GameCube GBA player.
Ah, I thought so! Thanks for confirming that only SNES controllers with teeth marks on them actually work on this thing. I'll take a bite now!
Do you insert incompatible carts into all the consoles you borrow?
Wouldn't get one from me that's for sure :)
If you plug a 32X in it, does it work?
No, but I'm sure with some modifications, if you're willing, it's possible
Ennui Go
Definitely not possible, even with mods. The 32X has specific hardware requirements that this Android based software emulator cannot deliver.
yea, maybe the Retron 6 could have 32x, n64 and jaguar titles, who knows
so if you hardwired the 32x connector to the Genesis board inside the system, it might work? who's go $160 to burn and test this?
I've seen that the 32X fits in the slot, but it won't play 32X games. However, if you plug the power into it it will act as a pass through for Genesis games.
I contemplated a Retron 5 cause at the time, I figured it does everything I need it to do, but I can understand coming from the whole, "It doesn't feel genuine, it feels emulated even though it's still physical." debate. I would want my actual game cartridges to look and play like they were on the original hardware too.
+LuigiBroMario (SiebayRoo) but we can't do that on our modern tv's
Great idea to get all your friends around and play old games on a simple-to-use machine via HDMI. However, I simply use my Ouya which allows me to play SNES, Megadrive (or "Genesys"), 32X, NES, GBA, GB, Mame and yes, even Neo-Geo! All in lovely clear HDMI on my plasma.
So if it was implemented better (the sticking carts and weird game saves are known issues) I think it has a market, albeit quite small.
And yes, it is emulation.
Slot 1: Genesis / Mega Drive / Master System (with Add-on) / 32X (with Add-On)
Slot 2: Super NES / Super Famicom
Slot 3: NES
Slot 4: Famicom
Slot 5: Game Boy Advance / Game Boy Color / Game Boy
"Why would you stop playing Thunder Force II?"
So that we can play Thunder Force III? Or maybe even Lightening Force?
I'll be going now.
I'll just keep my roms in the mac (Nes, Snes, Sega, PSx), with my Logitech RumblePad I'm just peachy
I'm a fan of the Retron 5. The main reason is because I live in an apartment and having a Famicom, Super Famicom, Pal SNES, SNES, NES, Genesis, Megadrive, and Gamecube with the Gameboy Advance Add-on all hooked up to the TV at the same time takes up too much space for me.
It does have quite a few problems like when it comes to playing flash cart translation games (Like King of Demons or Secret of Mana 2), but I think the system gets a little too much hate for not playing N64 games or Master System games (without the base converter). It plays stuff from more than 7 consoles, and I think that is pretty awesome considering the competition.
Sure ROMs pretty much do anything the Retron 5 can do, and it is quite easy to argue that it does them better, but there is just something special about putting a real game into a real system. The gamers out there under 20 might not get it, and maybe it's just fetishism, but I really like having the actual games around.
Wow, that comment meandered quite a bit.
The biggest hate at this point in time is the emulation software they used without asking to make the system and games work.
Hahaha. I hadn't heard about that.
I hate it because I got a defective unit, and the retailer nor Hyperkin will replace the thing. So I am stuck with close to $200 wasted for a machine that doesn't work properly. Hyperkin can fuck off.
are there plans for a retron 6 or 7 ? (serious question)What third Party console do you recommend?
***** wow, that would be huge...
My opinion probably doesn't matter to you, but I recommend the Gen-X (for NES and Genesis).
Retro bit consoles are the best
I suggest just getting the real hardware
Super retro trio is solid. I have it and it's amazing
I'm well adapted to the controller. It's not practical for most games but for fighting games, it's awesome. I hit those hadoken's more fluidly than with the old D-Pad controllers. :)
QUESTION:....and this probably applies to a lot of games that don't have a 'SAVE FUNCTION' on their home systems, anyways, I LOVE Jurassic Park for the SNES, the game never had a save function, so you'd have to complete it in one go, which is a bloody hard task, taking 12 hours ish straight...for me at least, so if their is a memory card SD slot as Mark says, in the Hyperkin, can I save my game seeing as this wasn't possible on the original port a.k.a. SNES????................. AND, seeing as I live in Ireland, what is the best site to buy the Hyperkin on? or is it made only for the US market...with their 2 pin plug/and different voltage levels etc?....cheers, Noel
Please can somebody tell me the name of the game at 4:20
Yes, I wished there was a Retron model just for neo Geo AES/MVS... So much looking forward to snag a "cheaper" solution than the original stuff...
Good god... that the piano black plastic looks more scuffed up than my Genesis 2!
How does the music sound on NES/Genesis games? I know alot of the knockoff consoles have distorted sounding music for those two systems.
I bought the retron 5 as a college student who doesn't have enough room for five consoles and an old school tv in my tiny dorm room.
Mine was great for the week and a half I had it. The upscaling is nice, the controller feedback is acceptable, and the support is adequate. However, the battery backup thing didn't work, and the Genesis slot is so tight that I snapped two of the pins in such a short timeframe. Fifteen minutes later - in the dumpster.
The hyperkin dumpster 5
When i first heard of the Retron i was like wow its kewl.
But after thinking about it and learning more it seems once you get past your first impression, it doesnt have much to offer.
I think this review outlines most of the problems of this thing pretty well.
Lord Karnage vs. GWAR! Id love to see that
I guess if you were a collector that preferred less clutter maybe the Retron 5 would be kind of.... ideal? I dunno. This thing looks like the design of a mad man. I'd rather just use my real consoles.
If you have a Genesis 3, you're covered for Genesis/Mega Drive games from any region. Removing the plastic molding inside your SNES cart slot or using a pass-through adapter will cover you for Super Famicom games. 8-bit Famicom games work on the Top Loader NES but don't fit the molding so another pass-through adapter would be needed. A Gamecube with Game Boy Player will cover you for all GB, GBC, and GBA games with an analog output to boot.
That's 4 machines that really don't take up much room and far more reliable an option.
I know everyone loves to hate on this thing, but at least it allows me to play games through HDMI and stream them online. Also allows me to play GB/GBC/GBA games in decent quality without paying out the ass for Gamecube component cables.
One day, I'll get an XRGB Mini and play/record/stream on original hardware, but it's way out of my price range for now.
I did buy it used, though. Don't wanna pay full price or give Hyperkin money for what is using stolen software.
i don't get why the hate for this thing, if you don't have a use for it, don't buy it, but why would go spend so much energy hating it and trying to make others hate it as well ? i know people that do have a use for something like that, live and let live, geez...
The hate is primarily aimed at the manufacturers being entirely devoid of ethics and exploiting Open Source code provided in good faith to the world by violating the Open Source license it was provided by.
***** EMULATION IS NOT AS GOOD AS GENUINE. my case is settled. id always prefer the original console
TheMistakenGoomba If by not as good you mean often better, then sure. With an emulator you can remap controls (I can remap Doom and other old school fps games to have modern dual stick controls), you can run the video output through filters to reduce pixelation or choose custom color palettes for original Gameboy Games, and you can render old 3D games in native HD.
I ripped legal roms from my cartridges and I've been having a blast. There are a few bumps and compatibility issues here and there, but for the most part I would never go back.
GlassMufasa well. good for you. im just more oldschool
There's 2 reasons for the hate. Or at least, 2 major reasons. One, it's emulation. A lot of people originally thought it was going to be real hardware like the other Retron systems. But then found out when it was released, that it was just emulation. People complained. Especially people that insist on using real consoles.
The other reason being that they stole a lot of stuff when making the Retron 5. Coding and files from other free emulators. Stuff that has a license attached, making it clear that it's not supposed to be sold. Hyperkin went and stole that stuff, and sold it, despite legally not being allowed to.
