Thank you so much for this video. I bought the Retron 5 a year ago but only played NES and GB games on it and it was great. Until I tried SNES 😂😂 the input lag with my original wired controllers was awful! I was gonna sell it but I’ll look into the retronfreak firmware! New sub here
Thanks! Yeah I understand that you can get the retro freak firmware to work on the Retron. Make sure it’s up to date if you want to use it with the Game Gear adaptor
It’s awesome, it’s all I’ve been using exclusively for the last three years. I use my NES, SNES and Genesis 8bitdo wireless controllers with it. Fantastic set up. I like the fact that it preserves my cartridges by loading the ROM one time instead of playing it from the cartridge the whole time. Saves wear and tear on my cartridges. It’s a shame so many people still don’t realize you pull the cartridges out from the right hand side, lifting up and they come out easily every time. I wouldn’t be without my Retron 5. Hopefully they make another one in the future upgraded. Will be a day one buy for me.
Yes it definitely makes it easier to get the carts out one side at a time. Think if they make a new one they should make it a little less tight, but like you say it’s good that it doesn’t put that much wear and tear on the carts!
For all my clone systems with overly stiff pins, I put some silicone oil onto a cartridge, then insert and remove to spread. The pins still make great contact but you'll no longer struggle getting cartridges out. This is something I've done on the Retron 5 HD, as well as the handheld SNES "Retroad 5", and the similar SupaBoy SNES.
That’s a useful tip. Does it have to be any particular type of oil? And do you leave it a while to dry after???
For the worry about inserting and pulling out the top loaded cartridges there's an easy way side to side inserting and pulling out. That method makes it smooth and easy which I wish they put that info into the booklet it comes with but I heard from another that owns one and tried it with mine and was the relief when using my games in the top slots with their firm grips. Also a tip about the different language cartridges I've learned if you have the SD cards with dedicated folders for the games you intend and have a language patch on them, there's folks that manage to play other languages cartridges in the language they wanted with that work around with that SD card feature loaded into the system.
It’s such a shame that they didn’t make the cart slots just a tiny bit bigger and then this would have never been an issue. Evercade did the exact same thing which causes problems too
Great review of the Retron 5. Very accurate. Personally, I did hack mine to run an altered firmware. It is nice to be able to dump my cartridges along with the saves. But like you noted, not every game works. For the highest compatability, there are flash carts for each console, but generally, this is an awesome option.
Edit: Mega/Sega CD roms can be played on a hacked a Retron 5. That's the only reason I did it.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video.
That’s great you can get Mega CD compatibility that way. I wish there was a way to get 32X compatibility too.
Have you tried to insert an actual 32X in the Retron 5?
I have a Retron 5 that I use from time to time. Although for personal reasons, I typically prefer to play on original hardware. The Retron is mostly just there to apply fan-made translation patches and bug fixes to games that I can physically own.
Although some games tend to have weird graphical quirks. The biggest one I've noticed is in Final Fantasy 6. If you switch the battle type to Active, then the menus are significantly darker than they're supposed to be in battle, and you also get a weird effect of half the menu being darkened while in shops.
As for the controller, my main issue is that they thought it a good idea to give it an analog stick for games that are all designed to be played with a d-pad. While sticks are great for when you have full 360-degree movement, they're awkward and clunky for 2D games, and can be misleading when playing a game that only allows you to move in 8 directions.
Ah I forgot to talk about being able to add fan translations and other patches with the console! Good call.
And yeah the controller was just poorly designed. I don’t mind the stick but certainly isn’t best for most games you’d play on the supported consoles
@@GeekBattleGaming It's very handy, but also kind of niche in that many games don't really need that feature. Still, it's extremely handy for playing imported games in English (assuming a translation patch actually exists), and while most retro games I've played function well enough, some of them were broken, buggy messes that pretty much require the update of a patch to be played as they were intended.
@@gurvmlk the only one I played with a patch was Sweet Home for the NES. Finally made it so I could experience it in English
@@GeekBattleGaming I mostly use that feature for the old Final Fantasy games. Not only were some of those not released here at all, but several of them also had a tendency to contain rather glaring bugs that made certain features either not function as intended, or outright not work at all.
But I'm sure it would also be great for people who like playing rom hacks, and the like.
Ive used mine since around 2016 and am overall satisfied. It definitely has its quirks like just yesterday my Genesis top 3 buttons just quit working. I ended up trying a Retro bit wireless and to my surprise they worked again! So I plugged back in a wired Genesis controller and it worked again. Weird but I was relieved.
It’s weird how things sometimes stop working like that. Glad you got it working again ok. It can sometimes be hard to find controllers that work with older or clone consoles
@@GeekBattleGaming funny you mentioned that the 6 button controller that was giving me problems and only working in 3 button mode was built by Hyperkin. Ended up going back to the old school six button controller from the nineties. D-pad is loose and worn but still works great.
@@dad7275 the older stuff was built to last better. I still play my original Master System and Atari!
@@GeekBattleGaming I have the Power Base converter, and the adapter for the Retron 5 that lets you play Game Gear, Master System, and those cards but no actual Master System. I do play Atari. I have the VCS, 7800, Lynx, Jaguar, Jag cd, and 5200.
@@dad7275 wow you have a Jaguar CD? That’s great. I’ve always wanted one of those. I have a Jag but have only ever seen a CD add on for it once in the wild and it cost a fortune
I still have my original Retron 5, brilliant system. It has its faults, mine doesn't run Gynoug, or Over Horizon or Thunderforce 4. Three amazing games, i have tried messing with settings but no good. Any ideas ? But it does run a lot of stuff really well so.
I have a question, does this thing run bootleg cartridges?
I was happy with my pie but when I try the retron 5 and compare them the colors definitely look more vibrant on the retron5 .
I'd say if anybody's worried about the cartridges sitting in too tight and if you're bringing your own roms with your memory card just look for certain cartridges that fit better for example electronic arts games are definitely thicker also some older games that are worn down a little bit fit in and can be taken out alot easier 👍
The Retron 5 isn’t perfect but more than good enough for most of my carts. Also getting them out is sometimes about technique
I bought a retrofreak a few years ago and i find it head and shoulders above a retron
I would like a Retro Freak. Not sure how easy they are to come by these days, but would be good to do a side by side comparison
5:26 Thank you, finally someone who agrees. I do not understand scanlines, this is not something I ever experienced on a CRT with my Master System, Mega Drive, NES or SNES
They don't add any authenticity they just look bad
Yes!! 100% agree. When I put my old crt tv on side by side with a hdtv with scan lines turned on it looks nothing like the old tv
It's probably because the scan lines are artificial, rather than authentic. On a screen that generates them naturally, they blend into the picture because they're part of it. But with how the Retron does it, it's more like placing an overlay onto your screen.
@@gurvmlk yeah this makes sense. If they blended in on an actual CRT tv then they wouldn’t be noticeable like these filteres make them
@@gurvmlk That's a good point and well made.
The space at the back is for the power base converter.
The Master System converter?
@@GeekBattleGamingyes. It plugs right in and works. Tried it myself.
I wish more people were like you in their regard for scanlines and pixels. Artificial scanlines look absolutely nothing like a CRT tvs. If TV looked like that back then, we'd think something was wrong with the tv set lmao
Yes exactly! No CRT Tv looks like these filters! 😄
Tried modding my retron 5 and got the white screen of death . Now I’m trying to undo the damage I did lol
I love my retron 5 but my gripe is their customer service they haven’t released a update in a long time a system like this needs updates to keep there emulators in top notch
Yeah I agree. I had a real nightmare getting the update on mine to use the Game Gear adaptor. Their website for it was really outdated
Apparently there's a firmware MOD that was ported over to this that makes everything way better.
I’ll have to look into what’s available. Would be good to get this running as well as possible
Is the Hyperkin Retron 5 Hyper Beach a better version of the original black Hyperkin Retron 5?
As far as I know the console is the same either way. They’ve released updated firmware for it a few years ago but think any more recent versions just have that on. I do think there are community versions of the firmware that improve things a fair bit too!
It's a little better, but you still have to have an SD card and update it for more ease of use, they only have a lightly updated stock version for it when buying it, so it's still suggested to do a SD card downloaded from the site system update for the Retron 5 consoles no matter the model. But I still went for the Hyperkin Retron 5 Hyperbeach edition because it was the newest model of it, and the colors were great to my taste, at least to say on that note.
@@NataSenpai mine isn’t the funky colours but think the bubblegum look is better for handhelds
You forgot IPS patching so you can play japanese games that are not in english. Obviously this wont be available for all games but definitely for the better known titles.
Yes this is a good point. Someone else mentioned it too. Annoying as I had used it just once on a copy of Sweet Home so should have known to say
I want to be a part of the controller community
So you are a controller person.
The issue I have with this unit is with the quality. I have had 3 of them fail to work. I sent one in for repair and they "fixed" it yet it never worked after they worked on it. I like the functions of this unit but I can't trust it to last.
Yeah that sucks if you’ve had that. I’ve had a few games not work which I know will work in actual hardware which is a shame
@@GeekBattleGaming I really want to like this device, I love what it does. I just wish it was made better.
@@CaptainFrugalReviews yeah it’s not perfect, but I’m just glad it exists. I would have never imagined when I was little that I’d put my SNES and Mega Drive and NES games in all the same system
@@GeekBattleGaming I agree, I loved it when it worked. If they would make a new version that was constructed better I would purchase it on day one.
@@CaptainFrugalReviews I think they’re still making new consoles and they just said about a handheld Mega Drive. But not sure that they still do much with the 5 in one Retrons
Get an Analogue Pocket, use the Retron 5 as a rom dumper for your Pocket, done!
That’s one way of doing it. Haven’t got it set up to use the Retron as a rom dumper. But do have an Analogue Pocket!
I don’t want a console that's so tight that it could cause damage to my games or to the system itself.
Yeah it was a silly way to design it. Slightly too big would have been better than too tight
@@GeekBattleGaming I wonder what it would take to get them to do a recall since it does seem to be a common problem.
trading in my RetroN5 for the Polymega.
I’d get the Polymega and test it first. Heard there’s a few issues here or there. Will get one myself at some point, but will likely keep both
@@GeekBattleGaming Yeah i ain't gonna get rid of the RetroN5 but honestly, I haven't used it in about a year 1/2 due to it no longer receiving updates. I got the polymega more so for disc-based games anyways and did a ton of research on it before pulling the trigger.
@@smokeyarcade what’s it like? I’d mainly want it for Saturn games, but also PSOne and whatever random systems I may not have in my collection
@@GeekBattleGaming Don't have it in my possession yet, but from what i've been seeing from others, it's a really solid console. Should have it sometime next week if all goes well.
@@smokeyarcade hope it all works great. I’m tempted most just by the Cd unit but you can get the others for not a huge amount extra
downside if you buy game copies like fire red and the rest of gba games it will show as unkouwn game and of ppl want to use cheats the retron 5 uses it wont pick it up
The retron77 is more better
I’ll have a video on the 77 at some point. Just covered the Atari 2600 plus and compared the two
