It was a dream of mine to own one. When I finally got it, I never pooped so long as when I played Phantasy Star IV. My parents must have been so confused.
Man I appreciate every single one of your videos been watching since 2010 just got back into game collecting and the nomad is pricey but next on my list 🔥🔥
@@FlyinBlaney Its a portable Turbo Graffix 16. It was released around the same time as the game gear and game boy and could play the console cartridges/chips, but it quickly fell into obscurity or notoriety depending on your stance because of its $299 price tag at the time. That was in the 90's so imagine how expensive it would be if it were released now.

This console originated from the Sega Mega Jet in Japan, which were Sega Megadrive/Genesis consoles that were intergrated with airlines. The Mega Jet did not have a screen, nor did it take batteries, but it was a handheld that hooked up to a screen and required an AC adapter.
As for the lines / physical design... it was the 90's! It's right at home. I had one of these back in the day - and while I did think it was awesome - it is true that I basically always had to use the AC adapter - and that screen was pretty bad. But hey! It was a whole Genesis that fit in a lunchbox.
God I wish I could go back an relive my childhood. Even though we were so broke. we had to save up, just to be poor. It was still a hell of a ride and so much memories. :)
I still have my Nomad from when I was a kid. It's still awesome, but I wish I would've picked up the rechargeable pack for it. Standard travel fare was a backpack with a large battery charger, and about 20 rechargeable batteries, lol.
I got mine back in the 90's. I still have it and it still works today. It was great back in the 90's to play my sega games on the go. Yes the battery pack is def a must have for it. It takes forever to charge the battery pack.
Love the show, Mark. If you want to get the most from that Nomad I'd recommend getting the lcd screen replaced and getting a rebuilt rechargeable battery to power it. With those two modifications you'll get great screen resolution and about 8.5 hours of battery life.
I got a box of old sega video games cartridges given to me, & on the bottom was a Nomad. It was in perfect shape, & still had the protective plastic on the screen. Battery pack, AC, etc. was all there. Sold it on Ebay to some chick in Italy for $50.
This is so true. The screen was also pretty bad with lots of lag and fade - though not quite as terrible as the Game Gear. That said, I absolutely loved this thing as a kid.
+TheGlasses61 Like I said poor execution. There is a reason why Nintendo waited until 2001 with the GBA to re-release their 16-bit SNES games. Nintendo was less ambitious with experimental hardware like the Sega Nomad and their bottom line showed it. Nintendo has never had a loss leader console or handheld and is still surviving in the hardware and software sides. It's a shame Sega didn't see the right path.
War Zone The Game Boy just had the right formula. It’s hard to explain why it was so successful. Was it because of Tetris, Pokémon? The Sega Nomad was not the right path. Unless you had an AC adapter and you were near an outlet it wasn’t very useful.
I am a proud owner of one of these great handhelds, the cartridge plugs in without no tries at all. I stuck Duracell Ultra Power batteries in mine and it gave me a solid 2 hours of game play, I am currently investing almost $40 for 6 of the best rechargeable batteries on the market right now. I only bought 4 of these special batteries because of my limited budget at the time. And only two of these batteries kept my game boy color on for almost two months constant!
Don't recommend anyone buying this. Just get a PSP, a Genesis emulator and you can fit the entire library of Genesis games on one Memory card. Not to mention that the PSP is a much better system in terms of size, screen quality and battery life, and can do more than just play Genesis games.
Sad truth. But the PSP emulation really makes it up to you! I got 8 bit, 16 bit and arcade emulators that run perfectly. PSP needs to be on a golden pedestal for its emulation capabilities.
Chalkaspis Me too. PSP is the most underrated gaming device IMO. It can do so much, and for me it's way better than the DS. I have the entire collection of SMS, Genesis, NES, GBA, Arcade, and SNES roms on a 32GB card with a bunch of PS1 and PSP games also. I love that I can make my own PS1 isos and play my entire collection any time, on a nice screen pixel perfect (better than it will look on my TV which will be stretched and pixellated).
***** Only if you don't mind touch screen controls. I like having physical feedback when I press a button. At least for serious games. For touch screen games, it's obviously better, but none of these emulated games are touch screen based.
I had one of these as a kid. I never really played it 'on the go' because of the dismal battery life, which was even worse with the batts we had back then. I don't think I ever got more than about half an hour out of them. The only time I really used the batteries was when I was in the middle of a game and needed to switch to a different power outlet. But, it was great for taking over to my friends house. With the 2nd controller port and the ability to hook it up to a TV, it was so much easier than packing the full-size console. I miss it now...
I just bought a refurbished Sega Nomad with a new LCD screen from ebay, and this thing is incredible! Looks and plays just like the Genesis, and it looks better on a small screen! I absolutely love it. I've noticed that games seem to flicker once at the beginning of gameplay, but only once so its not a big deal at all, and its probably just my model. I love this machine though! I paid 180, and it was totally worth it. By the way, this thing kicks the Gameboy Advance's ass, which was years later!
I loved my Sega Nomad! Saved up a ton of money to buy it (forget how much for). My dad and I would take turns playing NHL and Madden on it during road trips. Wish I still had the thing.
You certainly don't get much like this anymore. Being able to play full-sized console games on the go seemed like an impossible dream until the Nomad landed. True, its hunger for batteries is eternal, but if you can bear that this is simply genius.
Play the arcade version of OutRun with MAME. It's even better. I remember the arcade cabinets of this game in the 80s also had some cool gimmicks such as a vibrating steering wheel (when the car crashed) or even a moving arcade cabinet! Yes, the entire machine rocked both sides when crashing :-). Also try OutRun 2006, which was released for PSP, PS2, Og Xbox and PC, which is a pretty decent arcade driving game.
I've had mine since I was a kid. Good review, It's all true about the battery life and the game turning off if you bump it (though you have to bump it hard) I don't agree with some of what he said though. The speaker in his must be defective because I am always amazed how loud and clear the little speaker is on mine. Same with the screen, very very bright and vivid for it's size (this is why it DESTROYS batteries!), and mine is still as crisp as the day I got it.
I had one of these babies back in the day! It was good for times when my brother wanted to play a different Genesis game on the console than me. All I had to do was fire up my Nomad and get down to playing what I want without bothering my bro!
I would even say the screen and speaker are nearly as good as modern handhelds like the DS and PSP. The controler port works perfectly, though it is a little hard to have both people play on such a small screen. Another thing he didn't mention is that it has an video out port so you can hook it up to a TV (works great for hotel rooms) and you can even use the Nomad as the controler 1 and player 2 plays by the controler slot. It uses a Genesis 2 power block if anybody is wondering.
I actually have the Nomad still modded with an LED screen and a modded battery for up to 9 hours of game life before having to recharge it. Best damn system for portables of its time. The Game Gear was fun too but this one was the best.
@evilgamers1 - yeah the reviews of it are old and the picture quality is terrible. I'm gonna upload a new one in a little while actually so stay tuned, and subscribe to me so you see it.
love this machine. Classic. Musha looked great on the nomad by the way. One of the best system names ever. "Nomad". Can you feel your tattered cape blow in the desert wind? On the journey of a exiled Hero. With only the Genesis games of his homeland to guide the way.
I am oldschool always and forever. I love my Sega Nomad. I usually plug it into the tv to play. Wouldnt trade it for anything. Now I have my favorite sega and nintendo classics on my galaxy note android phone which is the same screen size as the ps vita.
@miguelthegamer The Mode button allowed support for games that have issues with 6-button pads. It is to ensure compatability with older games that for some reason or another will not work with a 6-button controller. It also served as an extra button for some SEGA Genesis games.
I'm pretty much a fan of old consoles, like the Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, and the Nintendo Gamecube. I still have them and I played them, and I wouldn't sell them though. They still made history in my opinion.
I got my Nomad last year for like 50$ with battery pack, wonderful purchase, never regretted it since. It really gets way too much flack--yes the battery life is atrocious and you can't beat X-Men on it and you have to hold it steady, but who cares? Its a portable Genesis! And its a Genesis that can double as an ACTUAL Genesis at home (where you can also plug it into a wall)! I use it for road trips, always a good time killer. Games like Super Hang-On and Columns play like a dream on it.
Man I miss SEGA handhelds, I use to love playing my GameGear for hours on end, when at one point it was my main game system, then i got the Genesis and was blown out the water at the time, then my oldest bro who was living in collage at the time came down for a visit with the Nomad, and it just blew my mind at the time lol. Good times Good times.
What's crazy is I have the external Game Gear Rechargable battery pack that still holds a full charge after all this time. It powers the Nomad as well, though for a shorter period of time. if you can find one of these batteries that still works its the best way to power the Game Gear and Nomad on the go. Battery life I get is 6 hours per charge on the Game Gear, 4 hours on the Nomad.
The nomad can be hooked up to a tv and be played (obviously) but the controller port is not for player 1. It is for player 2. It can be used while player one uses the nomad and player two looks at the screen and plays with a second controller or it can be used on the tv. Just to clarify. If you hook it up to a tv player one has to use the nomad as their controller.
Cleaned your game cartridge(s) by using a Q-tip & some 91% alcohol on the contacts, then your games won't stop when you bump the cartridge. That's what I did and now it's solid, as long as it doesn't get pulled outwards. I got my Nomad for about $66 total. I also have a few games for it. :) I use NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, I have 12 so I can switch 6 out when needed. I'm not exactly sure how long it lasts.
Thank you, someone with common sense. Just use a now retro and cheap but far far far superior psp with a better screen, battery life, less weight, less bulky, etc with the ability to carry the WHOLE genesis library on the go. Screw purism.
I remember years ago, a guy made one of these to play Atari 2600 carts. He had several newer and newer versions. It probably looks really good nowadays.
HELL YEAH! I still have my nomad with both super hang on and strider! 1 game I love 2 play on the nomad with friends are some of the fun 2player games like Streets Of Rage and Toejam and Earl. Everyone is trying 2 focus on the small screen and what not. My screen is still in good shape, and is still very bright after 10+ years. And as I noticed in your game gear review you were smart and got some double AA energizer rechargeables, which are a big help. This system rocks, 1 of the best from sega.
@Snotnarok Fair comment dude, I can understand what your sayin. thing is, in the video he says he's been playing Strider on the Nomad, Strider has no battery backup on the cart so there are no save games to take into consideration with that particular game. Anyway I know what your saying about nostalgia and I respect that
MUSHA is a Great and RARE game....Wii owners should definetly ...DEFINETLY consider purchasing MUSHA, especially if you're a Vertical space ship shooter fan.
you are absolutely right! touch screens are not good for playing in my opinion too: they don't give the right feeling and when using them you are covering your visual area with your fingers, but the xperia play has its own playstation controller so you got all the benefits ;) cheers
I basically had the Genesis all my life and when the Nomad got really cheap back in 1999 even though I was only five I decided to get the Nomad because it was only fifty bucks! It was either the new Gameboy Color or a PORTABLE FUCKING GENESIS!!!!!
man I like this reviews of old game Consoles and games I played Strider but I did not get far hehe but I loved to play RASTAN I have still somewhere Sega Master System 2 I think it still works I have not played them for a long time
Meh CGR doesn't beg for money and he actually reviews games as opposed to randomly curing for whatever reason. Point is he hasn't worn out his welcome and has kept his schtick fresh and entertaining. In my opinion of course.
Great review, I have a question though. I am considering buying one, but the seller advertised it is "missing battery compartment cover". What is this and is it worth finding another one that does have it? I'd assume it's the battery cover, but does it affect how comfortable it is to hold?
@TomNeilThompson1981 Yeah but the Nintendo Gameboy was it's own system. This is playing a home console in your hands and take where ever. Sure, the screen could have been a bit bigger but it still works. Gameboy has it's own games and not it's own home consoles like Mario Bros or SNES game at the time. This handheld for SEGA is like playing the Wii or Xbox 360 on the go which would be pretty cool.
Get a car power adapter and it's great on road trips. Like he said if you have a large collection of Genesis games you have to have one of these. I still have a working Genesis, but find myself only using the Nomad to play my old games. Starflight laying on the couch, nothing beats that!
This must've been awesome back then :) ... kinda weird to think about that a thing like this needed to be this huge and eat so much energy when now I can play (almost) every NES, SNES, Genesis etc. Games on my slim PSP for many Hours! :D
I still have my Sega Nomad and it still works! With the rechargeable battery pack it would last longer than a hour. I did take that with me on the go when I was a kid. Just get yourself a book bag put the Nomad in their with the games you want to play and there you go. I know that is crazy talk now but back in day you did what you had to do.
Ahh, back when you lived on Earth.

I use NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, I have 12 so I can switch 6 out when needed.
It probably looks really good nowadays.
i want one I'm not even a sega fan, but being able to play genasis games portable is so cool
My local gamestore has this, I'm definitely getting it for christmas
Did you get it?
Sadly nope, my parents didn't know exactly wget I was talking about.
Teaze that sucks. looks like you got a switch tho...
They're both great, now lets all be friends and hug.
I had a game gear back in the day but i've never heard of this until now.
@Snotnarok Fair comment dude, I can understand what your sayin. thing is, in the video he says he's been playing Strider on the Nomad, Strider has no battery backup on the cart so there are no save games to take into consideration with that particular game. Anyway I know what your saying about nostalgia and I respect that
Great review as always!
MUSHA is a Great and RARE game....Wii owners should definetly ...DEFINETLY consider purchasing MUSHA, especially if you're a Vertical space ship shooter fan.
"Sir, I'm going to have to give you a ticket for texting while driving."
"I wasn't texting, I was playing Truxton!"
Reminds me of the wii u controller
you are absolutely right! touch screens are not good for playing in my opinion too: they don't give the right feeling and when using them you are covering your visual area with your fingers, but the xperia play has its own playstation controller so you got all the benefits ;) cheers
@bazfanv2
The Nomad CAN be connected to a TV, via the same cable that the Genesis model 2 and 32X use.
It's amazing how the Nomad and PSP are alike! The two of them only give you 2 hours of play time on the go!!
I remember my friend had one of these and we used to try to play 2 player games using the little display for both people.
this guy is the egon spengler of video game reviewers
Sega was ahead of their time with this stuff.
Great revew, keep them coming!
there's a few people who don't like this thing... Good on them... But I wouldn't mind having this thing... looks fun for a bit...
"let's crashin', for fun". What a nice end
So I did have a handheld console when I was young that played sega genesis cartridges and not those crappy Game Gear games.... YAY :D!
