- English Electric Type 4 class 40 diesel loco No. D213 'Andania' ran on 'The Cumbrian Mountain Whistler' rail tour from Crewe to Carlisle via the Settle & Carlisle Line on 27th August 2018. The rail tour was ran by Saphos Trains.
In this video we see the train arrive into Carlisle Station before leaving for Kingmoor with the empty coaching stock.
Class 47 No. D1733 was at the rear of the train.
What a lovely example. I used to watch these working on the North Wales Coast main line during the 60's, it sends a chill down my spine to hear one whistling today!
I started liking the class 40 locos also in the 60s when I was a teenager and seen many at Carlisle and Newcastle. They really do have a superb, unique sound. Thanks goodness we have a few preserved to enjoy today. Many thanks for watching and commenting. Regards - Allan.
@@allan5919 Yes it was a good time to be a teenager as I was one in the 60's too. All the named 40's used to pass through Abergele and one 40 got derailed there when it overshot a switch where the old slow line had been removed. I also believe D326 the Great Train Robbery loco served it's last days doing time on the line. They were sort of acceptable diesels after we lost the steam locos and I've grown to like them even more. Thank you for your reply and you're welcome as it was a delight to watch your video. Regards....Tim
That turbo sound under a station canopy wonderful, remember seeing one on WCML at Rugby taking an AL6 and 24 coaches up one Sunday morning when the 25kv was off.
Thanks for watching. I loved seeing the class 40s on the WCML at Carlisle on the Glasgow Central trains in the late 60s. Cheers - Allan.
A great sight I wished I'd been there to see such a classic diesel.

There's something of an echo of modern variable frequency drives in the turbocharger on a 40 (although with a completely different timbre).
