- With the Settle & Carlisle line due to re open on the 31st of March after the major landslip at Eden Brows I decided to put together footage taken over the last seven years covering the climb from Carlisle to Aisgill summit . A tough climb that would severely test the crew and loco . Apologies for the poor edit at 32-43 .
No one has given this stretch of Line better coverage over the years than you Steve, and this is a stunning compilation of your work over recent years...Thanks for all the effort you've put in....Bob
Thanks Bob , praise in indeed and very much appreciated ! Took a while to find all the footage I needed but worth it I thought . Regards Steve
Cracking compilation Steve, let's hope we can enjoy scenes like this again soon. Many thanks, David.
Thanks David, I must admit while it has been shut we notice just what we are missing out on . Steve
A terrific compendium of locos and trains there Steve, on, er, God's Wonderful Railway, ahem; Can't wait for it to re-open. A very enjoyable video, well edited and put together. Many thanks for sharing Steve. Cheers, Alan
Thanks Alan , be good when it reopens I must admit . Steve
each scene is bliss. As if nothing else in the whole world mattered.
simply waiting for steam, the sound of birds the cool breeze.
how I love the gallop thst only a 3 cylinder loco can produce.
a shame Green Arrow is not running.
i think the v2 just sounded so good
i think your last scene at 38 m 20 sec would be the penultimate scene.
i think it sums up steam and the landscape to perfection. It doesnt get any better than this. I just cant imagine anything better
Thanks Steven , sorry for the very late reply . Can't beat a good day out steam filming in my book . Steve
Wow! I never tire of this clip. Super stuff.
A nice compilation of shots. Whilst it lovely scenery it's a punishing climb for the engine and crew. Nicely put together Steve. Well done
Thanks Anthony , many a crew and loco have found it hard going on the long climb . Stve
What a compilation and sorry I've not commented before and that last scene summed it up so beautifully I know it sounds corny, but who back in '68 would have thought it possible to see scenes like that in the 21st century? Or even in the mid-1980s before someone suddenly discovered that the cost of repairing Ribblehead Viaduct was only one third of the original estimate? Many MANY thanks for all the hard work you put in to producing these videos and to all those involved in running these wonderful trains!
Thanks David , I wanted to do this video for some time so glad you enjoyed all the action . Steve
Some great memories there Stephen. I'm a professional photographer & my home is in The Eden Valley. My Collies & I have walked the S&C many times over the years & can recognise most of these locations. In fact at 28:32 Birkett Common the Collie barking was mine, Jack. Very sadly he died 1st Dec 2011 18:30, bladder cancer. I think about him every day. Anyway thanks for the memories & role on March!
Thanks for the very kind comments . I remember you and Jack at Birkett that day and sorry to hear has sadly passed away . Regards Steve
Great compilation, Galatea sounds fantastic. Enjoyed watching, thanks.
Thanks Brian, sorry for the very late reply. Regards Steve
Steve, you've excelled yourself! What a wonderful anthology of superb filming. Loved the bit where cattle flee the train in both directions. I was intrigued by the location at 19.00 which looked totally outside anywhere I have ever been. Anyway, great stuff, and a "look again" marker!
Thanks Alan , the shot at 19-00 is before the viaduct at Crosby Garret and is accessed via the public footpath . Regards Steve
That last shot at 37:47 was beautiful!
you left the best for last, great videos thanks for sharing, I've just realized I've watched it twice
Thanks John , took a while to put together but good fun all the same . Regards Steve
Wow! And a wonderful closing shot.... Thanks
Thanks Stephen , must admit the last shot is one of my shots that had all you need for a steam tour . Regards Steve
An excellent compilation Steve showing just why we all love the S & C and how much we've missed seeing locos and crews battling up to the summit. I'd pick the final clip as an example to show somebody what the S & C was all about.
Thanks Austin , must admit it is a big miss when it's not open for any length of time . Regards Steve
Many thanks for an enjoyable video.....38 minutes of pleasure and it also brought many memories flooding back. I was most impressed at your obvious fell climbing abilities too...I bet it was cold up there on the snow line? Superb videography with natural sounds...including the dogs in the background. I have subscribed and look forward to many more of your videos. Rob.
Thanks Rob , many a day in the wet and wind , up hills and all the stuff that is par for the course but worth it in te end . Best regards Steve
Love steam more so when working up hill. Lovelly steam music!!!!
I've thouroughly enjoyed it!!
Thanks tons
Richard

An excellent compilation of a wonderful line

An utter JOY to watch!!!!!
Thanks Peter , pleased you enjoyed the video and very sorry for the late reply . Regards Steve
Fantastic,.... Great Days .
Magnifique paysage sauvage et wonderfull steam locomotives ! Content de voir cette ligne magnifique continuer de vivre, c'est le cadre idéal
pour faire évoluer vos magnifiques trains britanniques. La passion du train est une institution chez vous......
Thanks Joel , must admit we are so lucky to see so many steam tours using the S&C .
Can't beat the old puff puff trains, the sound is wonderful.
Thanks Simon , a few years worth of footage but worth it to cover the stretch of line . Regards Steve
Americanese..."puffabillies"
Great video , thank you
The second coach in the rake at 23:00 is particularly unusual. I didn't even realise there was a single pre-nationalisation coach main line certified but this GWR coach proves me wrong and it extremely refreshing to see! Does anyone have any more information on this, or any other -pre-nationalisation vehicles certified for main line running (excluding the VSOE stock!)?
Thanks for the kind words and the very good explanation . Regards Steve
Might be a daft question - they’re climbing those banks and the pistons are going like mad, yet they’re not really going anywhere. Why not treat it like a car and go slower, but with more power?
mnic1234 brings back happy memories of a special journey made to Chester in the 70s to see the GW Vintage Train and I think, KGV or 6201. In which days, wooden coaches were still permitted on the national network.
Then the policy changed and the pre- War coaching stock was banished forever.Huge shame because the rake they assembled was very elegant indeed.Alistair
Thanks Alistair for the kind comment as it's much appreciated . Steve
😊 ty so much !
Excelente video!!
saludos desde Spain.
Thanks Juan , much appreciated . Steve
Wooooowww..., I've never seen such a stunning video footage in my whole life about railways on youtube. Fantastic video report about the most beautiful line in northern England, my opinion. Please never close this line while I am still alive, use it as much as possible for diversionary moves instead transfere passengers onto coaches and board them again on trains as seen on last West Coast Mainline blockade.
Thanks for the very kind comments and so sorry for the late reply.
Hi Steve. very good indeed. Cheers.Dave
Cheers Dave , took a while to find the footage on the external hard drive but worth it . Regards Steve
Hi Steve , yes I use external drive saves keep buying m/cards.Thanks for reply .Cheers .Dave
wonderful
Thanks John , much appreciated . Steve
PS As James Callaghan said: "Poor edit? What poor edit?" didn't even notice.....
Great compilation. Pity you were not around to film 850 and 46229 back in early-mid 1980's..
Thanks Stephen , I as around but totally oblivious that steam was still running sadly . Regards Steve
Nice to have no wind noise.
Thanks Martyn , I have decent sound from the external mic and the Rode blimp. Sorry for the late response. Steve
Beee-eautiful !
Thanks Jasper , sorry for the late reply . Steve
This is Wales right? At least the UK.Its beautiful there.
It’s in Cumbria and thanks for the kind comments. 👍
No problem brother. My blood is from Scotland & England, but I'm American.Thank very much for your reply sir.Oh & thanks for the videos. Not only the scenery but the trains are beautiful as well.Your camera talents are amazing too.
A decent run up the settle and carlisle line with steam locomotives I must say, been down it before but would love to do it again. No thanks to this corona rubbish its not been possible to do this.
As in a fairy tale :) beautiful movie
Thanks d=foe the very kind comment and sorry for the very late reply . Steve
20:38 to 21:14 for the sound.
The sound of 46115 hard at work especially with Gordon Hodgson on the regulator is a sight and sound well worth seeing . Steve
It's wonderful to see the old steam in action. Modern electric railways are an ugly blot on the landscape.
Thanks Fred , very sorry for the late response and I’m pleased you enjoyed video. Steve
46115 is my favourite 4-6-0.
Must admit I do love the sound it makes . Steve
Man! That's railroading!
Thanks Tom , pleased you liked the video and very sorry for the late reply.
Such music!
Ah, another Thompson compilation...Best grab a Motorcycle part and the Solvol for a hour -and try to have finger ends left when the vid finishes....You're RUMBLED.Mr T !!! Lovely Jubbly !
Thanks for the comment I think .
It IS ,actually, a compliment ! Watched 2 back-to-back while working on a Royal Enfield 250 restoration. Superb stuff - and I finished up with a nice shiny rocker cover by the end ! That 8 makes a lovely sound............
Thank you very much for the kind words . The Royal Enfield 250 sounds like a fair old project for you .
Long drag`s the other way !! From Settle Jn TO Ais Gill !!!!!
Thanks Sam , so it is as my other video titled The Long Drag Hellifield to Aisgill shows that . ruclips.net/video/B5wDFAFGhyE/видео.html
Nice steam train.
I get fed up with most photography when they don't pan there shots...
I don’t mind doing a pan shot but most shots on this video mean you can’t physically pan around either due to trees or whatever being in the way . Regards Steve
I get fed up with people who get something for nothing, then complain about it.
28.30 nice video
Nothing like a little subtle speed increase in the video to make those trains look a lot faster than they actually are.
All clips are actually as it happened as I don't like to mess with my footage as I can't see the point LOL .Steve
union of south africa steam engine, can do this clime at speed, no problem, but apparently she needs a new boiler, & they say it isen,t worth while, so it sits idle in some museum in bury, its begger,s belief how some people,s minds work, to me if it needs a new boiler, then it should definatly have one, no questions asked
