No video will ever do justice to seeing this live. It was truly an incredible experience. I still remember when the theater shook as the walls opened up in “Wait For Me”. How the lights of the helmets blinded me as the ensemble looked around. How every note rumbled through everyone in “Doubt Comes In”.
Loved Levi’s Hermes something just itched my brain in the perfect way he felt so perfectly New Orleans and matched the vibes it was great!! He’s little quirks that he had were amazing
I saw this touring cast and literallly didnt know a thing about the original cast. Which is good because I never compare original vs tour, and this cast blew me away. I was so in awe of the vocals and the damn set design!
This cast was amazing, I really enjoyed their performance. I would say the main thing to compare was how the ending changed since the stage doesn't have the same mechanism as the original. I liked it but i felt it didn't have the same impact.
If you haven’t heard the Broadway cast recording, you should listen to it! I think the tour is great but I think you’ll be impressed by the Broadway cast.
@@miraeshin8652 I thought the same regarding the ending, when I saw it in NY with Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney, the finale absolutely tore my heart out, and the use of that descending stage mechanism made it absolutely perfect, but sadly not every theatre has the capability or stage capacity to be able to add that in.
I actually was in tears today thinking about how all of these touring members are now gone. I loved this cast beyond measure. I wish there was an audio recording somewhere.
tysm for posting this !! I love the Hadestown tour cast SO much. Nicholas and Morgan in particular are a stellar Orpheus Eurydice duo. Nicholas has this insanely flawless voice and captures Orpheus’ youthful optimism perfectly, making it incredibly heartbreaking when he breaks down completely in Doubt Comes In. Morgan adds an intense edge to Eurydice that certainly feels like she’s been alone her entire life and her progression to sheer determined optimism at the end is wonderful. Their version of Doubt Comes In is so visceral and makes me feel things I hadn’t rlly felt before in that song
Thanks for uploading! I was really interested to see how Eurydice’s exit in Doubt Comes In and Persephone’s entrance in Road To Hell Reprise changed for the tour. To be honest I still prefer the Broadway version since the lift makes it a lot more dramatic and also makes more sense imo because Eurydice is going down to hell and Persephone is going back up.
It doesn't quite work as well when Eurydice has to disappear behind a wall instead of through the floor. And during "Doubt Comes In" it works better when she's in darkness until she starts singing - the reveal of having her come out from the darkness right behind Orpheus when it's her turn to sing, not before, is more visually and emotionally impactful. I saw the show on tour before seeing in on Broadway (from front row center), so for me the show got much better the second time. Went back to NYC a year later to catch it again during Eva Noblezada's final week.
I love this cast! I wish they would have made a recording. I saw this cast twice earlier this year in AZ and saw the Broadway cast last month, and this is still my favorite. Thanks for sharing a short clip so I could relive the amazingness.
Everyone complaining !!!! I felt every emotion !! Stop comparing tours to bway!! THINGS HAVE TO BE CUT! Because no stage a tour goes to, has a lift. The voices are beautiful!! The story telling is beautiful!! Every character is doing it !!
thank you so much for sharing this with us! you didn't have to but you did and now so many more people will be able to appreciate this amazing cast of people! 😊❤️
I am so grateful beyond measure to see this ! Thank you ! I’ve seen other vids, heard both sound tracks ( NYTW & OBC), and have been fortunate to see on Broadway three xs. Seeing the Tour in Feb 2023 ! ( Have my tix!) . But I am obsessed with show. Been a huge fan since its nascent beginnings in two thousand @ six ! I just now SOBBED & SOBBED when Orpheus turned around and Eurydice was lost ! 😢😭 ( sigh ) Oh well ! Maybe it will turn out NEXT time ! Bravo to this STELLAR Cast !
Great to hear the US tour cast, they're such a different vibe to the Broadway cast, thanks for uploading this. Hades I don't think has as much menace to him as Patrick Page, however I love Orpheus' voice. Maybe I'm just so used to Andre De Shields, but I'm not sure I like Levi as Hermes, perhaps I just needed to see the show in its entirety with this cast to get used to. Also I quite liked the reimagined solution to not having the descending central part of the stage, obviously the finale with Eurydice literally descending back down into the underworld was absolutely gut wrenching, and nothing will ever match how that's staged at the Walter Kerr/in London at the national theatre, but they made it work! I adored the OBC when I saw them earlier this year, and I will never forget seeing them as long as I live, but I will be very interested to see another cast if it ever comes back to the UK, because there are so many potential interpretations of each role.
Not a very good way to have Euridice go back down to Hadestown. Such a letdown from the power of her sinking back into the pit. Very glad I go to see the OBC. Although, I really love Levi's take on Hermes. Beautiful voice!! Great voices all around too.
It's not likely that every stage can be adapted in that short period of time though. This is a clever work around, and I give credit to the set designer who had to solve this problem.
for me, it really works because when you see him break towards the end it really hits how much orpheus meant to him, regardless of the “performance” he’s putting on
Thanks for recording this for posterity's sake! Always love to see new interpretations of Hadestown, but this Hermes just really doesn't do it for me. André de Shields is just so unbelievably good at this role that anyone else makes me feel like there's a huge chunk missing from the performance. That said, this Hermes does have an amazing voice when singing Road to Hell and Way Down Hadestown.
yeah he was really playful which to me made it seem as if he knew what was going to happen and was happy or proud that he just let it happen which i guess was realistic since myth Hermes was kinda a trickster😅 but he does have a great voice
@@miraeshin8652 i am one of the ppl that enjoyed Levi’s portrayal of Hermes. I love Andre’s interpretation a ton, but Levi is so different and is just so fresh. He has an amazing voice and gives me so much gay uncle vibes haha. I would say he watches orpheus and eurydice go to hadestown just like how in real life uncles like to tease you and let you have that experience as kids. I think his hermes is in that mindset and even knowing the outcome, he would rather have a positive attitude telling the story of orpheus(after all he’s the closest thing to a father figure orpheus has). And yes also he did lean into the entire “god of mischief” thing a ton. It’s a nice touch
I agree. When I first listened to the tour clips I wasn’t so sure how I felt about him, until I heard him sing Road To Hell. I think he has a great voice, but Andre is just so good at the role. I think if I hadn’t heard Andre’s version I probably would have enjoyed it a bit more.
I was unsure as well but I just saw him live and I absolutely adore his interpretation. The camera really doesn't pick up the subtleties that he puts it in and his presence on the stage. He has the best energy and the perfect amount of snark on stage. I wasn't a fan of Morgan's Eurydice though.
I've always been fruatrated with the ending because I can't conceptualize a "real world" equivalent to Hades' trial. In most stagings there isn't anyone next to them enforcing it as a stand-in for the God's power in the original myth. This staging allows me to think of the trial as Hades sending Orpheus to walk out of Hadestown by foot, promising to send Eurydice out by train after him, and if the train conductor sees him waiting on the platform they are suppose to take Eurydice back. Also after seeing this staging, I can believe Eurydice chooses to go back on her own after being hurt that Orpheus would ever doubt her commitment. They both have seen that their love was not enough to prevent her from going to Hadestown once, so the added stress of Orpheus's doubt is enough for her to go back to her old ways of prefering to be alone. I'd love to hear your thoughts since you also saw this staging in person.
Yes, Hades does send Orpheus out of Hadestwon on foot with Eurydice following him. I do like the idea of her being hurt and choosing to go back, but I am not sure that is the intended message, since this version is the touring version, I feel like the real message is conveyed a bit better in the Broadway version. In the show in New York, right as Orpheus turns around and before Eurydice can even comprehend what happened, the center of the stage where Eurydice is standing lowers down into the pit below, marking a breaking of a deal with Hades instead of a choice by Eurydice to go back. I'm not sure if you've seen the whole show, but Orpheus made a very clear deal with Hades, that if Orpheus turns around to check on Eurydice she will be sent right back to Hadestown. In this touring version of the show, they clearly don't have access to an elevator in the middle of the stage every night, and the reimagined version gives Eurydice more of a choice to step out of the closing doors, instead of the helplessness of sinking into the ground. Just my perspective after watching the show in New York and then this video.
Well since in their world gods and magic exist i feel like we don't really need someone to be there enforcing Hades' deal. It's more like Disney's Hercules when he gets his power back after Meg gets hurt without Hades knowing his deal was done. I felt like this staging made it look like if Orpheus had stepped out but before Eurídice could he turned and closed the exit leaving her no choice but to go back to Hadestown maybe more hurt by Orpheus but who knows. I liked it but i still prefer the Broadway version since it physically taking her down against her will by an invisible force (Hades deal).
Well, there are tons of interpretation possiblities. The real reason WHY he turned around was never answered by the ancient Greeks. In the OG myth she was bitten by a snake & died. But in any case she leaves him. You could see Orpheus' journey to the underworld as a story of tragedy, sacrifice & letting go. There seems to be no catharsis but there actually is. Orpheus could not explain what happened to him, accept his loss. He denied and fought, he went through literal hell because he held on, driven by despair & rage, still hoping he could undo what had already happened. Hades let Eurydice go all the way back with him to help him understand that she did not belong into his world anymore, it was only her ghost/spirit following him and holding onto her would have given him nothing more than a phantom of grief. She was lost long before he turned around, but when he did, he faced the ultimate truth & the pain of knowing that no earthly measures could give him back what was never belonging to him in the first place. It's a story of life's journey really. That nothing in this life is a matter of course we can take for granted & that no experience of love, no matter how short, is a waste. It's all the things we think we are in control of until we realize we are not, and yet we're not willing to accept it. When turning, he faced the inevitable & therefore his own mortality. Realizing that TRUE worth is only based on limitedness & acceptance of such- the essence of humaneness. It's a truth we always want to forget, but once understood you can "raise a cup" for all the little & big deaths you went through, for all that had to go to let you see what is.
I understand the logistical need to change the staging from Bway to tour, but it really softens the blow of the ending to not have the trap door. On tour they have to walk upstage to get into the portal in the set, but on Bway Orpheus just turns in place and Eurydice freezes and then gets swallowed up by the stage. It's a total gut punch.
Who hates this cast? I don't think I've heard anyone say straight up that they hate them, it's probably just because they're different to the London/Broadway cast, and those who have become so used to them maybe aren't fans of change.
I actually prefer the touring cast if I had to choose, (especially Chibueze Ihuoma as Orpheus who's currently touring) I adore the original cast as well, but I honestly prefer Chibueze's and Levi's vocals. These type of phone recordings just don't do anyone any justice either...I think in person it was flawless.
@@miraeshin8652 I actually recorded the full show at this particular stop a week ago, it isn’t released yet because of editing but, would you like it once it is ready?
when this hermes does his spoken word parts he sounds so monotone without the inflection that the broadway hermes' have. it's so bad honestly. just listen to 4:10 lol this eurydice has a really strong voice but she cuts her notes really early. not a vocalist though so not sure if its a stylistic choice or to make it so she can hit her notes better. regardless she sounds really good, would love to see her live.
I think the spoken word part in Wait for Me II is a conscious choice, based on how emotional he was during the finale. It’s almost like he was trying to stay disconnected emotionally from Orpheus but finally realizes how much it affected him at the end
I know this is the tour cast, but man does it hit different when Eurydice sinks into the pit rather than the doors closing on her
