Thats Reeve. I went to the stage door after watching the show and everyone was so chill and professional and then we saw Reeve and there was so much awkward energy as if it was his first show. Either thats some serious methood acting or Reeeve is the most awkward person I've met. (For refrence this was Febuary 2020, so far from his first show) Probably why he was cast for orpheus.

Yeah I just saw the show for the first time yesterday and thought the song was a bit on the nose as commentary on current affairs. Was shocked to find out it was written a decade ago 😂
It did when I saw it last fall! Honestly the show got a lot of laughs, often in moments you wouldn’t know just from the soundtrack, right from the moment Hermes leisurely walked onstage.
Anaïs is a lyrical genius. One example that I can't get over is the line "all the rivers will sing along, and they're gonna break their banks for us, and with their gold be generous" like there's both river banks and banks are what keeps money and gold really can be found in rivers, so it all works so well, and it makes me so happy c:

@@GuiHppn I didn't know if it was situational, or a consistent thing. The Gods of the "overworld" in Greek mythology never really liked Hades due to his attitude and behavior. Hermes is a more neutral god, and thus tolerates Hades more than most (while still being cautious of him). For me, I didn't know if it was in the character to turn away for his appearance or if was just happenstance.
I'm too used to Amber Gray as Persephone since she's been playing the role for forever, but I'm loving Miss Kimberly as Persephone! I don't think I've had the privilege of hearing her before.

During the first song I was like "this is a really weird band, why are there so many lead singers" and then they were like "this musical" and I was like OH.
I didn’t realize this was broadway at first, just thought it was a big band. And I was like, who is this goofy looking dude just kind of awkwardly standing there mouthing the words while everyone else enthusiastically sings and dances??
4 years later, I’m still coming back to this video. I’m still struck how everyone on stage looks like they’re having the time of their lives. Except Reeve, who looks like he’s stumbled out from the dressing room in the wrong direction and ended up there by accident. Special mention for Jewelle Blackman, who has more charisma in her shoulders than most performers have in their whole body.

I saw this show in its infancy, performed in a parking lot in Montpelier Vermont, with Anais as Eurydice. I had heard that she had developed it further for the Broadway show. I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m thrilled. She has enriched it and polished it. She has kept the heart of it and added the details it needed. Impressive.

My husband and I have been following Mitchell since her concept album in 2010. It was the only CD I would listen to in my car for two straight years. The concept version of "Wedding Song" was our wedding song--impromptu cheesy dance choreography included. Listening now to this heartfelt and haunting music and seeing how it has transformed into a full-fledged musical on Broadway gives me so much joy and anticipation of where it will go next--and where I and my family will grow as well. I'm pregnant and sitting here holding my belly and crying a little bit thinking about how I want to share my love of music and storytelling with my little one and how this musical and Anaïs Mitchell's songs and spirit will be a part of growing up and growing together. Thanks for this Tiny Desk Concert and thanks for all of this incredible love and devotion to creating beautiful art and story.
I only discovered the original concept album after I learned about the musical. I can only imagine how cool it is to be so connected to a project like this, and to watch it become what Hadestown has. I've seen a few musicians do projects like this with the explicit intent to turn them into staged shows, but they rarely ever get put on, let alone given the full Broadway treatment. It must've been really exciting to hear that an album that meant so much to you was made into a Broadway show like this (but in hindsight, it's not surprising, considering how GOOD it is).
I know, it’s been very similar for me! My parents had been big fans of Anaïs for a long while so I grew up with Hadestown around. It actually took me a while to adjust to seeing it as double the length but every extra minute is incredible.
Agreed! I've honestly listened to this, no joke, four times since it came out, and I haven't been able to get "Way Down Hadestown" out of my head. I've never been the biggest fan of musicals (they're fine, but they've never really excited me like it seems they excite other folks), but when I heard that THIS is what Hadestown is, I got viscerally upset that Broadway can't be up and running for a long while.
I don't know how anyone could listen to this magnificent performance of the masterpiece Anais Mitchell poured her emotional, creative, and musical lifeblood into for over 10 years and their only critique be "it's extremely corny" or "I can't get into broadway cheese". Every single performer in this video, including each band member, has more talent in their pinky fingers than either of you will ever attain in your entire lives.

I love Eva, and I love Reece and I love Andre, but I’m not gonna lie that the thing that made me really want to watch this are the Fates, specifically when they sing “you get a knife in the back”, and that drop and chest pump. I was obsessed. Can’t say how many times I’ve replayed those few seconds. Sass and power.

Absolutely can't get enough of Jewelle Blackman's alto, that power and the sneer she puts on the 'nooooow's are just golden. You don't see the low end of the chorus get the melody very often, as a bass singer you love to see it.

Everyone is so expressive while performing, but for Why We Build the Wall everyone (especially Eva) drops the expressions since everyone is dead and tired in Hadestown and I love that so much
This was so good, hearing Anaïs singing the beginning of flowers reminded me of my love for the earliest recordings of her songs and why we build the wall gave me shivers as per usual!
Tara Lang It really is! I do love the broadway recordings but the original with Anaïs and the original cast recording (c2017) have special places in my heart. I’m so glad the new broadway recording includes some songs from the first recording that aren’t in the original cast recording to- like how long and flowers.
okay i love how during the dialogue and interactions the other cast members eyes swap between the speakers totally engaged as though they haven't heard it a thousand times. you can tell they love the material and enjoy each others performances
Reeve and Patrick’s vocal ranges will never cease to amaze me. In fact, this whole cast is epic. Can’t wait to see them back up and running when everything is safe again!
According to Anaïs (I hope I spelled that right), most female parts written by men are very difficult to sing, but she had the opposite problem; she wrote the female parts knowing they weren't too outlandish and then got to the men's parts and was like "yeah, that should be fine". Patrick Page even commented "It's interesting because you composed on guitar where most compose on piano. On piano you can visually see 'no no, these notes are too way over there, that would never work'". I probably butchered what both of them said, but the quotes are from the "Talks at Google" interview.
It's really wonderful seeing Anais Mitchell enjoying what she made. Hadestown is a wonderful album on it's own and the musical is just as great. (By the way, if you haven't heard the original album, it's a folk bluegrass marvel. Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco, Ben Knox Miller. All wonderful)
I just noticed at 7:18 when Orpheus says "I also play the lyre", Reeve kinda looks back at the guitar since he isn't actually holding one xD I love this musical
The first song gave me chills. The second song made me cry. The third made me bob along. The fourth made me look up Anais Mitchell to see what else she's written. The fifth...chilling.
I love how they tried to recreate outfits from the stage production with their wardrobe. Yes, the cast is dressed more colorfully, but the style itself is still recognizable especially witj Orpheus, Persephone, Hades and Hermes. Ultimately I think it's a nice mix of characters' "fashion" and actors' personalities👀
I come back to this video SPECIFICALLY to hear her half of Flowers. I love the cast album, no question, but she gives it something insanely unique in this live performance. Delicate, pensive, aching, and beautiful.

This show specifically benefits from the raw, immersive feeling that you get from watching it as an audience member (or with an audience, on a bootleg). They polished the sound of the cast recording for the music's sake, and the music sounds beautiful, but it necessarily loses some of the spontaneity and feeling of a live show.

I saw this show in its infancy, performed in a parking lot in Montpelier Vermont, with Anais as Eurydice. I had heard that she had developed it further for the Broadway show. I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m thrilled. She has enriched it and polished it. She has kept the heart of it and added the details it needed. Impressive.

My husband and I have been following Mitchell since her concept album in 2010. It was the only CD I would listen to in my car for two straight years. The concept version of "Wedding Song" was our wedding song--impromptu cheesy dance choreography included. Listening now to this heartfelt and haunting music and seeing how it has transformed into a full-fledged musical on Broadway gives me so much joy and anticipation of where it will go next--and where I and my family will grow as well. I'm pregnant and sitting here holding my belly and crying a little bit thinking about how I want to share my love of music and storytelling with my little one and how this musical and Anaïs Mitchell's songs and spirit will be a part of growing up and growing together. Thanks for this Tiny Desk Concert and thanks for all of this incredible love and devotion to creating beautiful art and story.
I only discovered the original concept album after I learned about the musical. I can only imagine how cool it is to be so connected to a project like this, and to watch it become what Hadestown has. I've seen a few musicians do projects like this with the explicit intent to turn them into staged shows, but they rarely ever get put on, let alone given the full Broadway treatment. It must've been really exciting to hear that an album that meant so much to you was made into a Broadway show like this (but in hindsight, it's not surprising, considering how GOOD it is).
What an experience must that be to grow along with the music that binds your love together! Hoping for a happy and blessed future for your family ♥️

I know, it’s been very similar for me! My parents had been big fans of Anaïs for a long while so I grew up with Hadestown around. It actually took me a while to adjust to seeing it as double the length but every extra minute is incredible.

Absolutely can't get enough of Jewelle Blackman's alto, that power and the sneer she puts on the 'nooooow's are just golden. You don't see the low end of the chorus get the melody very often, as a bass singer you love to see it.

This was so good, hearing Anaïs singing the beginning of flowers reminded me of my love for the earliest recordings of her songs and why we build the wall gave me shivers as per usual!
Tara Lang It really is! I do love the broadway recordings but the original with Anaïs and the original cast recording (c2017) have special places in my heart. I’m so glad the new broadway recording includes some songs from the first recording that aren’t in the original cast recording to- like how long and flowers.
okay i love how during the dialogue and interactions the other cast members eyes swap between the speakers totally engaged as though they haven't heard it a thousand times. you can tell they love the material and enjoy each others performances

Reeve and Patrick’s vocal ranges will never cease to amaze me. In fact, this whole cast is epic. Can’t wait to see them back up and running when everything is safe again!
According to Anaïs (I hope I spelled that right), most female parts written by men are very difficult to sing, but she had the opposite problem; she wrote the female parts knowing they weren't too outlandish and then got to the men's parts and was like "yeah, that should be fine".
Patrick Page even commented "It's interesting because you composed on guitar where most compose on piano. On piano you can visually see 'no no, these notes are too way over there, that would never work'". I probably butchered what both of them said, but the quotes are from the "Talks at Google" interview.
And to think, they also once played against eachother before...in Spiderman Turn Out the Dark.
It's really wonderful seeing Anais Mitchell enjoying what she made. Hadestown is a wonderful album on it's own and the musical is just as great. (By the way, if you haven't heard the original album, it's a folk bluegrass marvel. Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco, Ben Knox Miller. All wonderful)

The first song gave me chills. The second song made me cry. The third made me bob along. The fourth made me look up Anais Mitchell to see what else she's written. The fifth...chilling.
19:10 - Eva's "you" in Flowers is extraordinary.
I love how they tried to recreate outfits from the stage production with their wardrobe. Yes, the cast is dressed more colorfully, but the style itself is still recognizable especially witj Orpheus, Persephone, Hades and Hermes. Ultimately I think it's a nice mix of characters' "fashion" and actors' personalities👀
The cast album doesn't do Eva's voice and character portrayal justice.
I come back to this video SPECIFICALLY to hear her half of Flowers. I love the cast album, no question, but she gives it something insanely unique in this live performance. Delicate, pensive, aching, and beautiful.

I think the cast album actually let a lot of them down, I don't know what it is about it, but it sounds so half-baked, it disappointed me

This show specifically benefits from the raw, immersive feeling that you get from watching it as an audience member (or with an audience, on a bootleg). They polished the sound of the cast recording for the music's sake, and the music sounds beautiful, but it necessarily loses some of the spontaneity and feeling of a live show.
