Chappell Roan: Tiny Desk Concert

It’s become a Tiny Desk tradition for artists to leave a small offering on the shelves - a tchotchke, a toy, a signed album or piece of swag, a guitar pick, that sort of thing. Usually, those pieces get absorbed into the visual din, but sometimes, they change the look of the Tiny Desk permanently. All of which is to say that when Chappell Roan finished her magnetic performance, we immediately sought her out to sheepishly ask if we could keep her wig.
Roan’s marvelous debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, came out last September - just in time to fit into the window of eligibility for the 2025 Grammys, hint hint wink - and it finds the singer toying confidently with a persona inspired in part by drag performers. Flanked by a pink-clad band, she wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to serve up an absolute look, complete with white makeup and a towering wig (bolstered by a wadded-up trash bag tucked inside, as well as an assortment of stubbed-out cigarette butts), which now sits comfortably atop a skull Cypress Hill left us.
It’s only appropriate that Roan would forever alter the Tiny Desk. Because, at the risk of sounding hyperbolic, this is a stunning set: Performing five songs from Midwest Princess, Roan worked through songs of youthful heartache (“Casual”), queer liberation (“Pink Pony Club”), mournful alienation (“California”) and two decidedly different forms of chaotic seduction (“Picture You,” “Red Wine Supernova”). In every mood and every song, she’s utterly commanding - witty and whip-smart, vocally assured and charismatic beyond words.
She didn’t just leave her wig; she left a mark.

the lipstick on the teeth, the matching eyeshadows, the insane wig- she's one of the most "committed to the visuals" gen z artists out there!!!!!!!
Her videos are amazing. Super high concept and at the same time goofy. What an artist.
😂😂😂
I love her bc she's not trying to be "pretty." She's succeeding at being art.
There is no way you can try to make gen z sound cool in any way

So real! As a swiftie and Chappell Roan fan
This is SO accurate. After the first song, I was like "Ooooohhhhh! *This* is what my daughter feels when she listens to a Taylor Swift song." I had never heard of Chappell Roan until this Tiny Desk. She's gained a new huge fan!!
Swifty here. Her song Coffee hits me in the feels every time💖🫠😔

her breath control is insane! she can be dramatic and theatric and it never bleeds into her vocal performance
I kept thinking about the lipstick on the teeth which almost looked like a faux lipstick teeth mouth guard. Whatever it was, she sang like it was nothing!
Her art really resonates with me. She combines LGBT-Themes, Drag, those warm Midwestern Vocal Stylings and just colorful catchy production. Really so out there, theatrical and vibrant. Raw and unfiltered lyrics just round it out perfectly to me.
PERFECT description.

I agree! Gaga used to be camp but....now she has achieved mainstream popstar fame. Roan brings new, fresh energy to the scene.
The live versions of these songs are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the recorded versions - the vocals, the arrangements, the strings.
Right! Her voice really shines here
I really hope they get a live version on spotify!!

Oh my god yes. I prefer live studio recordings like this to begin with but it doesn't suit everyone. It really ratchets up my love for an artist when they perform live so well.

Unfortunately I don't think she'll be up for Midwest Princess next year since Dan Nigro was nominated/won for producing her and Olivia's songs this past Grammys, but if she doesn't win the first time she is properly nominated I'm gonna riot 😤
No the cutoff date for eligibility last year was Sept 15, 2023 and the album was released the following week. The album would be a part of consideration for next year’s awards. Any songs released prior to the album can be reconsidered for the eligibility period in which the album was released.

my thoughts exactly
real
I like how she only dresses like “Chappell” when she performs. In interviews she dresses without any of the glam. It makes this feel less like a persona for the sake of virality and marketing and more like a genuine passion project, an art piece just like for a drag queen.
We gotta shoutout the backup singer, Mia Pfirrman! HOLY COW! She was not PLAYING!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Millennial mom here. My 3 year doesn’t like the music I listen to but I was playing this and my daughter stopped to watch and listen. i love popstars who can sing and write at the same time like UGH
ME TOO
She has the lyricism of Taylor Swift, a voice like Olivia Rodrigo, the epic instrumentals of Lana del Rey, and the camp and glamour of an 80s/90s/ early 2000s popstar! An icon in the making
do not compare her lyricism to “now im down bad cryin at the gym” “maybe the 1830s, without all the racist”. Taylors newest songs are flat out embarrassing.
the backup singer is FIERCE
totally !! I love her
shes on spotify under Mia Pfirrman
Came here looking for more of these comments. She was amazing

Her voice really shines when she’s not running all over stage. She also gives me a similar excitement to watching lady Gaga rise to stardom. It’s exciting to have a pop girl like this
Couldn’t agree more. I disliked watching her concert performances she did last year, but this is really very special.
This is pop?? Omg…feels like the white version of soul, to me. 🤣🤣 I never liked pop because it feels so darn vapid. Maybe I get to listen more…cause this is beautiful music!
So real. Honest. I feel like she is me. 🤣💕🥺🙏🏾

@@christibradford8499most "pop" that gets overplayed on the radio is just one type of pop. Pop music can actually be really good and doesn’t need to sound watered down

my sister passed away in January this year. it hurts stumbling onto these videos and thinking "I know she'll love this! I'll share it with her", only to be reminded that she can no longer receive it.
Chappell has such an amazing style + character and her music is absolutely lovely; it reminds me of the special woman my sister was, so full of love, character, and killer style to boot.

Gotta tell you, lots of tiny desk shows i just pass over but this one, well, I'm glad I stuck around.
I’m sure they had all the number one fans, family fiends of the all the band members there that could fit there. She said it was her Super Bowl. That says a lot! I’m already checking more of them out
Their excitement brings even more joy. Check out Lizzo's TDC too. People were so into it and it was super fun to see.
@@tordre1Used to love Lizzo, but after being revealed as a terrible person by dozens of people, I can’t support her anymore.
The upcoming one will be Soul Glo- first hardcore punk band they've ever had here, the energy from the crowd is crazyyyy but that's expected for a band of that genre- they get the credit for the first ever tiny desk push-pit lol

Starting off with casual is the best introduction that I could fathom.
When she dropped the Casual video (which is a masterpiece), RUclips served it to me in “suggested for you” and I’ve been obsessed with her ever since. She’s an astounding talent and it’s been so heartwarming to see her talent be rewarded again and again this last year. Go Chappel!🎉
Genuinely this is one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen. Her concept, the commitment to the bit, the drag queen of it all, the arrangements, HER VOICE?!??? This is high art

Violin taking the electric guitar part... Fire!
Which song? This is my first time hearing her
Pink Pony Club. Checkout the music video for that, it's fun!
I got a little weepy at the end of Red Wine Supernova, I don’t know why. The joy her band takes in playing these songs with her shows that she’s not only a great songwriter, singer and performer but a great bandleader as well, which is genuinely heartwarming to see.
Me too, I’ve never heard of her before this but for some reason I burst out crying in the last bit of that song. There’s something so joyous and genuine about this whole tiny desk and it speaks to me straight through the screen. Definitely going to listen to her frequently after this
I saw this comment thinking no way it could make someone this emotional. And here I am at the end with tears in my eyes. The joy is oozing out of them
