I’ve seen a lot of people upset over the changes that they made and while I can understand where y’all are coming from all I can say is if the original creator of the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, was fine with it, there’s nothing more that can be said. And we have to remember that the stage and the big screen are two vastly different forms of media and changes are going to have to be made. I am honestly glad they didn’t make it a scene for scene copy of the Broadway musical. The changes give it a breath of fresh air imo.
I agree! The stage and screen are two different ways of telling a story and therefore changes will need to be made to make it more appropriate for the viewing, whether on stage or screen. And you make an excellent point! If Lin-Manuel Miranda himself didn't like anything particular in the movie then it wouldn't have made the final cut!

Folks who've never seen the broadway show will be stunned, & folks who already know & love the show will be blown away. I couldn't imagine a better translation to the big screen!
Watching those 8 minutes I can't imagine it being filmed any other way now! There's so much energy and happiness in every shot! They've truly done it justice! 😄
I'm loving it! I was totally laughing! The choreo in the last chorus is not only super fast, but it is SHARP. Those are not easy moves to do at that speed And one thing stood out. They pumped up the diversity among the dancers. Sometimes in movie musicals you can spot the professional dancers, but I saw more than a few shapes and sizes among them. They really captured the lifestyle of the different kinds of people they want to highlight. Can't wait for this weekend!
The diversity is one of my favourites parts of this clip! And the choreo is SO GOOD! I realised why I'm in love with the choreo and it turns out John M Chu and the Choreographer Christopher Scott worked together on the films Step Up Revolution and Step Up All In!!! If this is the choreo for the opening number I can't wait for 96,000, the Club and Carnaval Del Barrio!

In The Heights is one of the best movies I've seen all year!!! The songs were BEYOND CATCHY, the cast was amazing, basically the entire film was a absolute blast from start to finish!!! I got the soundtrack yesterday, and I have been listening to it nonstop!!!
I have seen it twice. Absolutely brilliant, moving and captivating. Go see it. Enjoy yourself. The ridiculous criticisms about skin tones and representations are to be ignored. This is the film that we all need to see, share with friends and love!
This first 8 minutes is more than enough to make me hysterical. And when I saw the whole movie, I just want to explode. If this movie don't get enough nominations on the 2022 Oscar or win some of the Oscar, that would be the strangest thing happen in the movie industry.

Having watched the full film now, my mind is blown. I had seen the show on Broadway, and it was great to see Lin-Manuel and Chris in there as competing vendors.
it was so hard not to watch this or listen to it on spotify. like. PERO LIKE. once this came out and i after i caved in, i knew it had to be good. besides some actor choices because of their vocals, the film was an expanded version of the stage production and i cant wait to see what awards it’s nominated for next year. i saw the show on broadway with the obc except for mandy gonzalez. krysta rodriguez played nina in that particular matinee i saw. and she’s obviously amazing. my friend group and i fell in love with the show and it still has a deep connection between me and only one other person from that friend group. this opening scene is what i saw on broadway times infinity. the ending with all of them dancing in the street is just the beginning to a celebration of latinx culture(s).

I got to watch the entire movie last night. No spoilers, but you're gonna love it. Where the story changed from the original show is not distracting. 96,000 is as electric as you think it will be. Nina and Benny dancing is as beautiful as you think it will be. Carnaval is a big damn party that will have you dancing and singing at full volume. It is a gorgeous film with all the colors the trailers and posters have displayed. You'll laugh loudly, you'll sob like an infant, you'll celebrate this cinematic achievement. I can't wait for you to see it!! *squee*
I just got home from watching it in the cinemas and it is everything you described! I was completely starstruck while watching it! Lin-Manuel Miranda, John M. Chu and the entirety of the cast, crew and creatives did such an amazing and beautiful job with this film! 😄

2:30 I honestly prefer Abuela's verse here in the movie than in the original Everytime I listen to the original version I kinda become concerned because Abuela sounds like she is having a heart attack because she is so bombastic and loud lmao😂, here she is more relaxed and chill

From what I can tell there is no Mrs Rosario which means Enough has been cut with her character. Gonna have to wait and see the film to see what they did with her character!
I havent seen a musical since i was little kid. I just finished this movie and I have to say I enjoyed it alot,and its left me both eager to see more Musicals in Film like Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY,but also more critical of how Steven Spielberg represents the Puerto Rican culture that is heavily prevalent in the material and was heavily Whitewashed in The 60s original. My biggest question I'm left with is where the the black Musical version ? I'd love to see a MUSICAL that celebrates BLACK CULTURE with a heavy influence on the early 90s NEW JACK SWING style of music like Bel-Biv-Devoe,BOYZ 2 MEN,New Edition and Bobby Brown.
That’s amazing to hear that seeing the film has made you eager to see more musical film adaptations! I believe Steven was very active in making sure that people with latin backgrounds were cast in the film so that there wasn’t a repeat of the 60s whitewashing. Unfortunately back in the 60s there wasn’t a lot of accessibility for Latino actors/actresses to be in big films which is why it was groundbreaking for Rita Moreno to be cast and win the Oscar for Anita. I think now that Hamilton has come out there is definitely going to be more musicals coming out with African American and RnB influences! And there is definitely more room and opportunities for musicals with those influences to come out now then there were years ago!
A musical centering on African American culture would be really cool, but I will say with In The Heights there was an opportunity to include some black culture. Irl Washington Heights has a pretty large Afro Latino population so it would have been cool to see that reflected more in the film.

I think it’s because the times have changed since the original stage production came out in 2004 I believe. So even though a lot of the cultural, and financial issues that they discussed and dealt in the movie were basically the same as the original, because we still have those same problems today……because it’s years later and it’s with a new generation of people, the energy might be a bit different. Although a few original cast members were it in.

As someone who's never seen the musical, i'd say this was one of the best movies i've seen in a while. I've had the soundtracks on repeat.

Sonny and Usnavi's dynamic is peak family vibes. I love it, especially when Sonny reached around Usnavi to add in the sugar.

Just before the box of condoms shot what I found even funnier was that Usnavi was holding boxes of VapoRub while singing "I got it" .

I got to watch the entire movie last night. No spoilers, but you're gonna love it. Where the story changed from the original show is not distracting. 96,000 is as electric as you think it will be. Nina and Benny dancing is as beautiful as you think it will be. Carnaval is a big damn party that will have you dancing and singing at full volume. It is a gorgeous film with all the colors the trailers and posters have displayed. You'll laugh loudly, you'll sob like an infant, you'll celebrate this cinematic achievement. I can't wait for you to see it!! *squee*
I just got home from watching it in the cinemas and it is everything you described! I was completely starstruck while watching it! Lin-Manuel Miranda, John M. Chu and the entirety of the cast, crew and creatives did such an amazing and beautiful job with this film! 😄

Everytime I listen to the original version I kinda become concerned because Abuela sounds like she is having a heart attack because she is so bombastic and loud lmao😂, here she is more relaxed and chill
not a big spoiler but look out for Hamilton references though this film weather its cameo by cast or more def a great easter eggs!! and this might be my favorite movie of the year so far been listening to the soundtrack since i saw it last night lol

From what I can tell there is no Mrs Rosario which means Enough has been cut with her character. Gonna have to wait and see the film to see what they did with her character!
I havent seen a musical since i was little kid.
I just finished this movie and I have to say I enjoyed it alot,and its left me both eager to see more Musicals in Film like Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY,but also more critical of how Steven Spielberg represents the Puerto Rican culture that is heavily prevalent in the material and was heavily Whitewashed in The 60s original.
My biggest question I'm left with is where the the black Musical version ?
I'd love to see a MUSICAL that celebrates BLACK CULTURE with a heavy influence on the early 90s NEW JACK SWING style of music like Bel-Biv-Devoe,BOYZ 2 MEN,New Edition and Bobby Brown.
That’s amazing to hear that seeing the film has made you eager to see more musical film adaptations! I believe Steven was very active in making sure that people with latin backgrounds were cast in the film so that there wasn’t a repeat of the 60s whitewashing. Unfortunately back in the 60s there wasn’t a lot of accessibility for Latino actors/actresses to be in big films which is why it was groundbreaking for Rita Moreno to be cast and win the Oscar for Anita.
I think now that Hamilton has come out there is definitely going to be more musicals coming out with African American and RnB influences! And there is definitely more room and opportunities for musicals with those influences to come out now then there were years ago!
A musical centering on African American culture would be really cool, but I will say with In The Heights there was an opportunity to include some black culture. Irl Washington Heights has a pretty large Afro Latino population so it would have been cool to see that reflected more in the film.

@@CathlynRoseMcKellar I have watch it several times now and still feel it is lacking something. It is entertaining but doesn't makes justice to the masterpiece that the original script is.
I think it’s because the times have changed since the original stage production came out in 2004 I believe. So even though a lot of the cultural, and financial issues that they discussed and dealt in the movie were basically the same as the original, because we still have those same problems today……because it’s years later and it’s with a new generation of people, the energy might be a bit different. Although a few original cast members were it in.

it was so hard not to watch this or listen to it on spotify. like. PERO LIKE. once this came out and i after i caved in, i knew it had to be good. besides some actor choices because of their vocals, the film was an expanded version of the stage production and i cant wait to see what awards it’s nominated for next year. i saw the show on broadway with the obc except for mandy gonzalez. krysta rodriguez played nina in that particular matinee i saw. and she’s obviously amazing. my friend group and i fell in love with the show and it still has a deep connection between me and only one other person from that friend group. this opening scene is what i saw on broadway times infinity. the ending with all of them dancing in the street is just the beginning to a celebration of latinx culture(s).
