I went to the Theaters to see this and there was no one except me and my friend in that theater so we could literally get up and dance whenever we wanted to. It was a vibe
I saw the movie twice in theaters and the theater was nearly empty both times. Which was kinda sad cuz I saw both black widow and a quiet place in theater and they were packed so I can’t blame the pandemic for it. I still loved it tho.

Colorism and anti-blackness is very prevalent in both West Indian and Latin countries, just like it is in the US and literally most of the world. Latin America/Caribbean’s post-slavery caste system was literally based on skin tone. Pointing that out is not racism. Also, as someone who grew up in NY, Washington Heights is indeed mostly Dominican, and brown/dark skinned folks at that. So it’s not racist to point out that reality either.

So it was awesome to see this with them, and it be the first time we've gotten together in over a year-and-a-half. I'm still replaying the music, but I loved " No Me Diga," "96,000," and "Carnaval del Barrio." Lastly, shout out to you for addressing the Afro-Latino controversy. So many ppl didn’t like the movie because there wasn’t many dark skinned Latinos but at the same time we have to remember it’s a movie. How ppl play the roles matters, we shouldn’t give a white person a role just because they are white and we also shouldn’t give someone a role just because they have dark skin. The cast knew how to act, sing, dance and had great chemistry which is what matters in a movie, also Latinos come in all shades of brown.

I believe Lin’s vision was to create a story about Latino groups and their struggles, with the Heights as the back drop. This is not a documentary about the Heights. In addition, the film was filled with different skin colors, two of the salon girls as an example: We have to stop the drama, and take this as the first step towards a goal. This is only one story out of many to be told. I don’t believe there were complaints like this during the 2008 stage version. The momentum has been ruined. Now I wait for the next writer, producer, composer to proceed on taking Latinos forward. In all honesty, hopefully it’s a Afro Latino. Let’s move on and grow.
There were complaints about the broadway musical. Especially when they cast an italian. The point was Speaking roles. Sure there were a diversity of background extras. that's true of most all movies. The problem is, if you're going to represent washington heights, it's not hard to be a little better about having a more accurate representation You can't really tell a story about latino groups and their struggles when you exclude some of their voices. These are people living in poverty, many probably paycheck to paycheck. Idk about most people but as a second year teacher, that’s close to 3 years’ salary for me, so yeah, I’d be pretty excited too…

Was the issue not having any Afro-Latino in the movie or not having any of the main characters being Afro-Latino?
The main characters I think, a lot feel that Afro-Latinos keep getting placed in the back and not front and centre which is a shame because there’s a lot of Afro-Latinos out there that deserve to be main cast in anything but Hollywood tends to not cast them
I believe some people took issue with the lack of darker-skinned Afro-latinx main characters.
