The actress playing Abuela Claudia is reprising her role. She originated the role on Broadway. Her singing is incredible.
Good to know and her singing really is.
Her song is actually one of my favs. My experience as an immigrant was not quite as trying as her character's, but boy did it hit pretty dang close to home for me.
It was really lowkey racist when Claudia was dancing with black dancers dressed as slaves knowing that white cubans that left to the USA were slaveowners, meaning her mother was one
I was really surprised that she was really singing it herself.
omg SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL
Don’t feel stupid my mom asked if Washington heights was a real place, she’s lived in New York for like 30 years.
BAHAHAHAHA
may we have an oof in the chat
@@SaraSong-mw3zm oof
Oof
Omg before this comment had 2 likes (I liked it) now it almost 700!
"The ensemble is huge"
Wait until you see the pool/96k scene and tell me what you think of it LMAO.
Ahahahahhaha exactly what I was thinking
Literallyyyyy
That part is THE PART of the movie and musical
Yo jimmy ever pulled off that trick?
I was thinking the sameee thingg
Also! Can we talk about how in the ensemble he isn’t centered. As if to emphasize that they’re telling all of their stories, not just his
Yess
I also thought it was interesting that the story doesn’t have an antagonist (bad guy)
@@femke3868 i think the antagonist might be his want to get out, bc by the end he realizes where he’s supposed to be
@@emilygrove884 that is true but an antagonist is traditionally a person or thing, not a concept
I just thought it was interesting that the story works so well without a specific person or thing working against the characters
@@femke3868 unless you count that evil sun 🙄
@@TeddyTrashvt gahahahhahahaha trye
basically the idea of the show is that he's telling a story about his time in washington heights to the kids. (the ones on the beach)
Just in the movie, though. That’s not in the original show
On the beach. ;)
@@aggie5668 """"on the beach"""
His kids more specifically
not technically, if you watch until the end it turns out something else
In the movie, when Nina's dad is on hold with Stanford, the hold tone is "you'll be back" from Hamilton as a little easter egg. And yes please react to the whole movie
Yesss that was my favourite
I saw that too lol
I was about to scream when I heard that! It's just FABULOUS!
I love that Lin does little musical queues like that one. Very Rodgers and Hammerstein of him lol
Yeah I noticed that when I saw it
Fun fact, Anthony Ramos’s sister and mother were actually dancing with him for the huge dance for the beginning song, and the ending song…..the camera actually pans directly to them.
And lin Manuels parents and wife were in breathe I believe
And Lin’s wife was in the crowd in the finale
time? i can’t find them
His mother was also who said 'no me diga' in 96,000 and was also sitting on the bench towards the end of when you're home.
Wow that’s so cool!!
I am so happy that Anthony Ramos is finally getting the recognition he deserves. His voice is incredible and HIS SOLO MUSIC. AHHHHH.
Mind over matter is a bop
FRL THOUGH
Relationship is SO GOOD
Just FYI, "In The Heights" is not a sung-through musical. Also, the first 8-mins video does not show the actual first minutes. There is a short clip explaining that he is telling his story to a group of children in the future.
Yeah and this is just the first song which introduces all the characters and what their songs are going to sound like, which I love
Lin’s writing is chef’s kiss
yeah. ‘in the heights’ is one whole song
The things is, the beat is a mix of latin genres, its moving because as a Latina growning up in western countries I never got to hear this. Some of the lyrics are in Spanish so you get exited to hear it. Cafe con leche is coffee with milk a staple of Latin America. Abuela talking about patience and faith is something most of us grew up hearing. It's moving because in the first 8 minuets you see the latin community being represented in a different light than before. The hard working, dependent full of life latino. Not the drug addict or thug. This movie represent family, support and love. Being proud of where we came from. I hope that gives you a bit more understanding as to why this movie /musical is so important :)
Couldn’t have said it better myself. As a Latina, this movie makes me feel something I can hardly describe and it means so much to me
Exactly! As a Latina, I cried when I saw it because it’s so rare to see our stories represented positively in media! It’s such a beautiful musical and it’s way more personal than Hamilton. This musical is so insanely important for showing the immigrant story
exactly and the part where he’s singing about the things he sells he’s holding a bunch of vapor rub which made me laugh so hard lol
"Growing up in western countries"
Ummmm, all Latin American countries are western countries.....
This comment warmed my heart
And I couldn’t agree more
one of my favorite things that the movie adaptation does it adding the huge ensemble in the background. it makes the barrio feel more fleshed out and like a real neighborhood, as opposed to the stage musical which has a limited number of cast members. love that they took full advantage of the movie format.
I completely understand where you are coming from but that is the reason that I have not actually watched the full movie yet. I personally feel that they went too big with the ensemble and that just distracts me more from the content of the song. Especially in this song and 96,000 where it seems more like a few friends just chatting. But that is just my seemingly unpopular opinion I thought I would share.
Favorite thing is, though he's telling his story, he's telling multiple peoples stories from Washington heights. He is just the narrator, the story isn't mainly about him. So he's part of the ensemble, the narrator, the focus of some scenes, and so much more. Each person has their own story going on and that's why the music will change and why some of the things seem so inconsistent and unimportant.
I would love to see a reaction to the whole movie. The whole “talking to the camera” thing doesn’t happen anymore after this first number. Almost all of the songs have some sort of fantastical aspect to them. It’s a movie about a lot of things but one of the more prevalent themes is dreaming/being a dreamer, and I think they really tried to portray that in a lot of the songs with the way they’re filmed in a way that they couldn’t really do on stage. It’s a beautiful movie, visually and musically.
Yessss
In the musical (I haven’t seen it bc I was two years old but from what I’ve heard) Lin does talk to the audience a lot, but the way they’ve incorporated these things is Anthony telling it to the kids
The scene change would make more sense if you watch the whole movie but it’s kind of hard to tell you what happens without spoiling it.
I mean is it?
Because you can just say he’s telling the story of life in the heights to kids on the beach and that’s why it cuts to them.
I don’t think I’ve spoiled a lot
I feel like the majority of this video is just her going "why are these ordinary people singing about ordinary things" LMAO
I mean, the musical is about just regular people and what goes on in their daily lives. Normal problems, their jobs, relationships, etc. What exactly were they supposed to be singing about LOL and no its not like Hamilton, the film does have a lot of regular dialogue
YES.
Exactly.
😂😂😂
Let us just enjoy a story about people of color that doesn't have to center drugs and violence. Just every day hustle and grind. Damn!
This
If you loved the ending of these first 8 minutes, you’ll love 96,000. Tons of people dancing and singing together in a pool, doing flips, etc. super super cool
96000 is a work of passionate art. I hope the choreographer gets recognition for that accomplishment
idk how to explain but they sing about irrevelant things like what he sells, her security deposity and his coffee order because a big part of the musical is the feeling of mundane and comunity with no big WOAHS and that this in it self should be a big woah
Yeah to them these things aren’t irrelevant, they’re extremely relevant.
They are very much relevant, everything that he is mentioning, every word in every rap song is exactly what Latin people live on their daily lives... so yeah, it’s very much relevant
It's life things, to them that's their world.
“Okay Abuela” is right!! The cool part is that the actress who played Abuela on stage for the OBC is the same! There’s a lot of cool little tid bits and Easter eggs in this movie and I love it so much.
My favourite Easter egg was when the hold music when Kevin was on the phone was ‘You’ll Be Back’ from Hamilton
I almost screamed in the movie theatre hahahaha
@@femke3868 I watched the movie on HBO Max and when that happened I said, “Ayy!” I loved that they did that.
@@Wickedfan219 i was in a movie theatre and sang along. it was not my best thinking but it was funny hahaha
I vote for a full movie reacttttt, so rare that vocal teachers react truly blindly like you do, which makes your content so captivatinggggg
There was actually a scene before that song where he was explaining about Washington Heights to the children and how it almost disappeared. He was telling the story to them which then entered the scene to the first song. So no it did not just go to a random scene of children on the beach. 😂
You should react to Anthony Ramos he’s the lead in this movie!
Yesss she should
He just put out a new album!!
YESSS
omg she should react to “Relationship” 🥰
He's amazingly talented and quite the cutie. :D
to answer your question hannah: they DO talk in the movie! and they also talk on stage! (in other words, there is a script) it’s not just singing all the way through like hamilton is :)
Visually this is STUNNING. Story wise, the stage show was better. Musically, the stage show was better, I truly miss the missing songs.
The missing songs were so important. I felt like they made it a love story more than focusing on the stories of each person
Right! The missing songs and even the way they rearranged some of the order was just a no for me. The movie was good but compared to the show just not quite.
Personally I liked the movie more, I watched the musical right before the movie and I had such a hard time concentrating
Probably seeing it personally on Broadway would be better but, with my short attention span, I prefer the movie so far 😅
When you watch the full movie, you'll understand everything more and things will come together. They've taken bits out and put bits in the youtube first 8 minutes, so it's a lil off. I'm watched the musical in cinema and it was awesome, I'm a huge in the heights fan.
Would HAPPILY watch a reaction to the full movie, I totally understand not being sold on the mix of sing talking/actual talking in the middle of the songs at first, but I think watching everything in context will really help sell you on it!
This movie isn't available in my country so those 8 minutes were the closest I could come to watching it, I think I'm responsible for at least half the views on it
it’s definitely more fun to see it in theaters cause it’s amazing but if you wanna watch it it’s free on soap2day.to when you click on the movie to play it’ll open a new tab the first three times and then the fourth it’ll play just delete the tabs :)
you can see it in Stremio as well!!
girl...get a vpn like Nord or Surf Shark. You can change your location and can watch it that way. This way is not illegal! :)
Whoa thanks for all your tips! I'm kinda hesitant about watching it for free on some website though, I don't wanna watch it without giving the creators something back for their amazing work
@@kage3069 the VPN just changes your location so you can access that region on your device. You would just download the HBO Max app, subscribe, and watch it normally. Surprisingly, VPNs are pretty cheap. I live in the US and love to watch British shows on Netflix. It is awesome!
In the heights is a literal masterpiece, please do a full react to it.
If you liked abuela Claudia's little belt in the "paciencia y fe" phrase, you should definetly react to her solo part for "Paciencia y Fe" (the song), it is lit 🌟
First 8 minutes of singing. Not of the entire movie. There are some amazing cameos in this from the original cast (also from Hamilton).
Also from Rent, also from Hadestown (Patrick Page).
It’s literally how the show opens- the first 8 mins
@@mnkybl8 if you are talking the broadway show, they yes, I'd say that is similar-ish. That's why I said the music. The movie deviates. Starts on the beach talking about the little dream. That clip doesn't start until 3 and half minutes in to the movie adaptation.
@@robertjames5778 I didn't know Daphne Rubin-Vega was cast for In the Heights. Imagine my surprise when Daniella started singing and I was like all "Mimi?"
@@SgtSplatter782 yeah man as someone who didn't see the OBC of Rent, imagine my shock when I started a deep dive on the different singers. Man, she's good then, she's still good now.
You're really on fire lately!! I've watched In The Heights so many times! LOVE IT!!!! 😀
Such a good movie! Everyone I know who's seen the movie loved it
I would adore a reaction to the whole thing. This movie literally brought me to tears at one point.
⚠️SPOILER ALERT!⚠️
Omg yes! I watched it for the first time a couple days ago and I was full out SOBBING when Abuela Claudia died and when he found the lottery ticket that she left him! 😭 and when Nina admitted that she got searched and when Sonny realized he can’t do some stuff because he doesn’t have papers
I absolutely LOVE the dance sequence at the end of the opening number. I had chills when I watched it in theaters and I couldn’t stop smiling 😊😊😊 my sister and I actually had the theaters to ourselves and I totally stood up and clapped after the number haha it was that good!
And Christopher Jackson's the original benny, and now all I see is our first president when I see him.
you should react to “breathe” ! (both mandy gonzalez and leslie grace’s version!!!)
Mandy Gonzalez will always be my Nina, but Leslie Grace did an amazing job with her version.
Ok just saying they said that besides the regular cast, they said they had like 500+ extras and they all can dance and most of them live in Washington heights and they did film this in Washington heights 👍
That clip at the beginning with the children is showing you that the story the movie is telling is being told by the main character to that group of children. When they laugh at him for standing in chewing gum he stops his story. This is probably why he often looks directly at the camera, as a little reminder that he is telling YOU the story too.
Abuela is played by Olga Merediz. She played the role throughout the show's Broadway run, and received a Tony nomination for it.
You should react to “Paciencia Y Fe” (the abuelas song). It’s so good!
YES! But the version from the musical!
@@lau_29 yeah cause the movie is kinda spoilery
@@lau_29 I love both, so it wouldn’t matter to me!
YES
YES!
I know its been a while, but I would love a full in the heights reaction 😁😁
I want to see a full reaction to the whole movie, or at least 96,000 and Paciencia y Fey. I had the same exact reaction to the end of the song, a lot of tears on my end though. The shot with the ensemble dancing in the reflection of the window. Stunning shot. I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that one of the main crew members in the Step Up movies and choreographer was one of the choreographers for this. They're doing so much more on scene than you could ever see on stage. The ensemble is fractured a lot more in the movie. As someone who is always an ensemble member I appreciate that so much.
Hannah’s out here makin my life better every day
(P.S. Abuela Claudia is played by Olga Merediz, who also played Abuela in the original production!)
basically the first 8 minutes is the opening number for the movie/ show. The scene change to the beach is him telling the story to the kids on the beach. Its kind of hard to explain it without spoiling the entire movie. Its such a great movie!!
I mean, you just explained it without spoiling anything, so not that hard.
Is it just me or is Lin giving me Stan Lee vibe, in the sense that hes in most of the projects that he makes
Love In The Heights!! Watched it being preformed a couple years back in a theater and loved it!!
One: when I tell you I clicked so fast..
Two: Lin makes it a point to be in everything he makes and to be a vital and influential figure in each movie or film like marry poppins, moana, and yes Hamilton.
He actually didn't want to be in the movie but they begged him to play the Piragua guy and Lin said yes xD
This wasn't his idea. They convinced him to do it.
Oh sorry guys didn’t know that
Yeah he def doesn’t try to be in everything. He was asked to play this part or they were going to get rid of the part all together lol
Good to know! Thx everyone! Have a great day! 😋😁
The beach scenes are in the future and he's telling a story of Washington Heights to those kids.
Or technically the beach scenes is the present and him telling his story is just the past lol
that camerawork is called a Matchcut
"In film, a match cut is a cut from one shot to another where the composition of the two shots are matched by the action or subject and subject matter"
Little fun fact abt this movie: a lot of the background people actually live/work in Washington heights the guy you see mopping actually works in that building I think they wanted to keep it true to the area bc Lin loves his home town so much :) also that window shot YES BEAUTIFUL AMAZING I saw it and started crying for no reason it was so beautiful
Pleaaassseeee react to Vanessa’s “It Won’t Be Long Now”. Or whole movie. 🌴🙌
it’s not like hamilton where they sing everything. there’s definitely a lot of singing but there is regular speaking as well
Omg this made me cry love this
every time i listen to a song or watch a music your voice is stuck in my head saying “OOOOOH NICE BELT” or “CHEST VOICE!!!” because i swear to god Hannah you have taught me more than choirs class and i love it.
this isn't exactly the first 8 minutes of the movie, it's just really the opening song.
I love how much more confident and relaxed Hannah has become on RUclips 💖
“am i ??? stupid??” PLEASE ILY
I'm so glad you reacted to this! Their performance is amazing!
Its so interesting to hear little sounds that carry over to Hamilton like (I serve Café- éy- é- éyyyy) and (Angelicas arriving today- ay-a- ayyyyy) in Take a Break
I haven't pressed play yet but PLEASE REACT TO THE WHOLE MOVIE
The scene change is because Usnavi is telling his children about his story, that's why he is narrating!
saw the film yesterday and was blown away.. new favourite film
I love musicals in general, but this one in particular was so fun to watch with my family that isn’t as into Broadway as me. My dad spent a lot of the beginning pointing out the cast and who looked like members of our family and it was hilarious.
This actually isn't the first 8 minutes. There's a small piece from the beginning, setting up the story, left out. I think this is like the first 8 minutes from the beginning of the first song
YES please do a full reaction!!!
Yes I need a full reaction!!!
OH MY GOD I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS WITH FRIENDS OF MINE, THE BROWSER KEPT LAGGING EVERY MINUTE HAHAHAH
My friends and I went to see it in theaters and now I feel kind of bad for the three other people that were in the theater with us because WE WERE GIVING A PERFORMANCE
AS YOU SHOULD
I mean... It's just proper, especially if you're a fan of the original musical.
Also, balling my eyes up at certain songs. Breathe and Alabanza were tear jerkers for me.
Me too! It was only me and my friend in the theater, and my friend let me sing and dance to the songs :)))
@@markus242007 OMG when she chokes up upon saying "Gee, Nina. What will you be?" I lost it. And Alabanza.....that song kills me every single time.
VAMOS SI!!!! GIVE THAT PERFORMANCE!!!! I would have joined you haha
lol I was like "I like her shirt" and then realized I was literally wearing it
As a Puerto Rican myself this movie made me so proud! You should really watch it
I love Abuela Claudia's voice and her song Pacencia y fe it gives me chills every time I her it.
I watched this movie in theaters twice and it was absolutely AMAZING. I've love to see reactions/critiques of "Blackout", "Carnival de Barrio", and "96,000", a few of my favorites from the movie/show!
THEY ARE ALL SOOOOO GOOD
Oh my gosh Hannah you have to do the whole movie!
HANNAH IM CRYING AT THE PART WHERE YOU WERE BORDERLINE TEARY EYED AND LIKE AM I DUMB AHAHHAHAHA UR SO FUNNY I CAN'T
BUt Vanessa talking her security deposit is my favorite part, and that quick mention of it is important to her story plot in the movie
Yeees please do a full reaction 😍
Yes. Do full version!!!!
The musical version is a pop opera with little dialogue. The movie is actually more of a mixture of music and dialogue. I did this music in 2018 which was my senior year of high school. I’m in love with this and Hamilton!
I felt the moment he stepped in gum was the kids adding to the story. He starts out telling his story and singing. Kids interrupt, “and then you stepped in gym...” So you have that moment of interruption because of the kids adding something he didn’t expect.
YES!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a full review. This is my favorite movie of ALL time and I LOVE seeing other people’s reaction to it.
I LITERALLY LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
Soon as Benny sang “you ain’t got no skills” I was in love 😂😂😂 I was sitting in the cinema tracking this dude like. 😍😍
you should react to “carnaval del barrio” from this movie! it is one of my favorites in the movie.
YAAASS!!
Please do a full reaction!!! I just watched it a couple days ago & it was soooooo good!!!!!!!!!
I loved your reaction and you’re not dumb at all. Also, I was super lukewarm about the Broadway recording when I first listened to it years ago, but mainly cause it was hard for me to keep up with everyone’s stories without the script. The movie made me love it so much.
The abuela in the movie is the original abuela on broadway… and Anthony Ramos who plays usnavi was the original cast on Hamilton… The storyline is about dreams and community… Also diversity
Would love a full reaction, I love the musical and I thought the movie was incredible, especially the Paciencia Y Fe song scene, so please watch that, I think you’ll like it as its sang by Abuela Claudia played by the original broadway performer, Olga Merediz.
THAT PART IS SO GOOD BUT SO SAD
part two please love this movie so much
I just watched the movie and I loved it!! 😍
When Vanessa said "No", I felt that.
Edit: Awwwww, she didn't like it.
I loved Vanessa's part in the opening number.
It's ok. Hannah just didn't know what was going on. There's not a lot of context in this video about how the storytelling in this movie works. When I first heard Vanessa's part in the opening when I saw the live musical show about 10 years ago I was also like.....what is she talking about??
also, "I sang breathe, should I have done that? As a white, red-headed lady, no." LOLLLL
Let me confess I fell in love with this trailer twice. The first time was during my own acquaintance, and the second time was watching your reaction. I have several friends-musicians and I loooove watching their reactions to my favorite theatre pieces. I would really appreciate it if you’ll film your reaction to the whole ‘In the Heights’
YES!! i would love seeing a whole movie reaction!! :)
I've seen you do a bunch of reactions to musical episodes. Why have you not yet done "Once More with Feeling" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Yes, it's been done a lot but I would really like to see your reaction.
Yes, please!!! Awesome suggestion. My favorite musical episode ever.
Yes! Please! It's the best musical episode ever.
I get the impression that Hannah is totally the type to be a Buffy fan. Just a hunch, but I'm willing to bet that she's already seen the musical episode.
@@rjenyawd I wouldn't be surprised. But, maybe it's been years since she's seen it.

I went to to see in the heights in the movies and there was noone else there, only me and my mom, and she fell asleep after 10 minutes so I was just performing the whole thing on my own
i’m in love with this musical
I just absolutely LOVE you’re whole reaction to this movie!!! I figured you had to love this movie!!!
