@mauricesiermachesky4900 yea, go watch chads new windshield install. It's a disaster. He gave them the wrong size to cut, and he cracked both corners. Then, he used electrical tape as a windshield gasket. The best was Jolene squirted water out of a bottle while Chad sanded with an electrical disc grinder. Both knuckheads are at their best. Chad will listen to whatever Jolene orders. She is the shot caller. Then Chad accused anyone who criticized him that we must not build cars because we spoke against him. We actually use Chad's videos on what not to do in a shop. It works!!!
My buddy was a glass guy back in the 70's and a hot rodder. I watched him score a wind shield on both sides , wiggle it with a soft grip pliers and when it cracked along the score he squirted it with lighter fluid and flamed it up to melt the plastic laminate. And thats how he did it.
I work at a wrecking yard very long time did a lot of experimenting and the best thing to work is at harbor freight 4 1/4 wet saw I didn't have to use foam or nothing and I could even cut round corners with it I was cutting a windshield 1 inch strips without cracking it
By the way, from my understanding the reason it is so difficult to cut a curved windshield (laminated) is because of the built in tension within the two pieces of glass that make up the windshield. As the cut is made this tension is release and if the glass flexes as a result the glass will crack. Of course cracks can also come from the shelling during the cut and/or as you describe, the glass hitting each other during separation but the number one cause would be the release of tension during the cut and the failure to control it. The foam is actually doing that job and that is why it is a brilliant idea. No technique is 100% because at the end of the day glass has a mind of its own, lol. Cheers
I’m a woodworker, I’ve done very similar tricks in that realm, never did any real glass work. But I see how the skills translate. I did learn things, thank you gents.
Chad's a body man joke was watching another guy sectioning a old Chevy truck hood and before he cut it, it had about a 4" gap and he goes I suppose I could fill the gap with coat hanger.
I worked with Auto and Plate glass in the 70's and early 80's. It's funny how easy it is to cut glass, and people can make it seem so hard. On the Duo-lite glass like our Windshields in NA, you score one side, then using glass pliers pry down away from the score mark so it cracks along the score creating an unbroken crack from edge to edge. Turn the window over and do the same thing again, then we used methyl hydrate to dissolve the plastic between the glass, and working it up and down it will come free, reapply methyl as needed. We were crazy and would light the methyl on fire and the heat helped melt the plastic/resin. After I quit a co-worker had a glass pepsi bottle explode in his hand when he reapplied more methyl because the flame is invisible, he spent a while in hospital but recovered. The company was cheap and we often filled the glass bottles with methyl and put masking tape over the opening with a hole in the tape. Maybe stupid was a better description of the method, they were forced to get proper safety bottles after that for applying the methyl. Curved glass is especially tricky, lightly tapping the glass on the opposite side of the score mark will crack it, the glass pliers have a hump on them for doing this.
J f work is top notch ..Chad will never match your ability to do anything with cars and the way you customize them… your cars that you build are drivable..
Ever tried, having the windshield submerged in water so the surface is about flush with the top of the water. It keeps the glass from getting hot which causes cracking from the variation in temp.
I've used Pete Hagans technique to cut windshields using a rotozip and 1/8 diamond burr very successfully (Pete's video can be found here on YT). Don't use foam to do it but this foam idea is a very good one. I'm going to have to try this technique out with a saw and foam to see which technique if either is quicker or cleaner. Maybe a combination of the two techniques is a winner. It doesn't appear that dressing the edge takes any less work with this technique. This technique would seem to work best on a front roof contour that is relatively straight but if there is a curve to the roofline then likely the rotozip method would be better as the surface are of a bit wouldn't bind while the saw blade very well might when trying to follow a curved line. Awesome video !!
This looks like it is probably a more reliable method but there is more than one way to skin a cat. Bad Chad gives you a real view of every step he takes and sometimes it gets ugly but thats what honesty looks like. Whether people like it or not, he's pushing the envelope of what's possible for an average person to do with their car all in the span of an unscripted and unedited hour (in most cases). If i were to try and cut glass id probably do something between the two methods and I'm not hating on either. Pros and cons to both for sure, in this case taking more time, spending a bit more $$ and having an extra set of hands really seemed to be a benefit.
We use most saws backwards when cutting stone so the water cleans the debris and keeps the stone cool Not sure if that applies to glass but I don't see why it wouldn't Just cut backwards
Well I’m a Bad Chad and Jolene watcher.. I been watching him before they even started a RUclips channel.. I watch them every day.. He’s done a lot of things that I didn’t agree with, but it’s his cars, like the 34 ford that he’s doing now, smh 🤦♂️.. But I still love watching them.. So now I’m subscribed and plan on watching many more videos.. Oh yeah, now that the foam thing works for you, you should probably just buy the foam in the can now, should definitely be cheaper and it won’t be as hot spraying on the glass.. Just a thought.. Sorry for the long message lol…. Thanks for the video

How or what do you have to do to have a chance of winning the car? And I’m definitely going to keep watching you guys. Do you do videos every day like Chad and Jolene or how often do you put a new video out? Thanks for getting back with me, that’s one thing that I can say, they never written me back about anything.
Whatever you spray the foam on needs to have a surface texture for the foam to bite into. Cardboard has an inherent texture and pores. PPF is impermeable, and doesn't have enough texture for the foam to adhere to.
Pre 60s are more temperamental with the wrap around ends. But doable. I ve been cutting glass for years in a glass shop. Even the perfect technique fails sometimes. Contact me any time to discuss custom interiors or glass mods.
Hi JF, The windshield or the piece of glass you used was designed for what car ? And then you trimmed it to size so that it fits the custom opening you created, 66 or 67 Acadian body with a Corvair roof. Did you pre plan so you could fit a piece of glass from a certain car without to much difficulty ?
What you use for side glass. When you chop the top doesn’t it affect the side windows? Do you need custom side windows? I heard that can run up in into thousands of dollars. I want to chop my 66 impala convertible
I cut windshields which is safety glass(two layers of glass with plastic laminated between the two)with a $5.00 typical glass cutter. Score one side then tap it from the bottom till you can see the glass snap. Repeat on the other side. Then pour isopropyl alcohol along the cut line and ignite it to melt the plastic. While the alcohol is burning use pliers to separate the cut piece from the other. I m surprised you didn’t talk to a glass man to learn this technique.
Yes worked at a glass shop for 26 years all you have to do is cut it with a glass cutter on both sides and melt the plastic in the middle not that hard with a good glass cutter
@killerkustoms yes all the time just make sure the plastic is good and warm and pull it out straight away from the other glass cause if you bend it down to much it will chip the edges
Ive found the thinner the diamond cutter the better success. But that foam trick might be revolutionary. And the newer mini cutter sure as hell doesnt hurt the process!

The hot glass would likely expand, not by much, but enough that it would be under tremendous tension from the cold glass and snaps
