Happy New Year for tomorrow! THREE POINTS OF CLARIFICATION BEFORE YOU BUY THIS DEVICE
    1. The OLD Cube can NOT start Alexa routines. The NEW cube CAN Start Alexa routines, but only when in Scene mode. Don't buy the old cube!!
    2. The new cube can only trigger Alexa routines by flipping it to a particular side. Pushing the cube and shaking the cube can only start Aqara routines within the Aqara Ecosystem.
    3. You NEED an Aqara Hub, this is a Zigbee device, but Alexa won't recognise it directly even if you have a Zigbee enabled Amazon Echo.

the only big difference from the old one is that the tap action needs to be done by tapping the cube to a flat surface but the new on can trigger tap action by just tapping the cube it self. other than thread/matter support, the new cube doesnt differ much with the old one. maybe the older is going to a bit cheaper now.
as for alexa and homekit support, the new cube is the obvious choice here, but if your going to pair it with home assistant even the old one can trigger alexa/homekit automation/scenes.

I’m sure this is why he specifically mentions if it works with HomeKit… for me 😍

Got mine two days ago and I can't stop thinking of ways to use it! So many things! I found it while researching but if anyone sees this and had the same problem I did, when you get it added to Home Assistant if it does not have all the conditions available (sides, slides, twists, knocks, socks, rocks, blocks and co....ooler things) hit the pairing button next to the battery five times. I did everything you could think of, found that in a forum and it immediately 'unlocked' everything in Home Assistant. Except the battery... Still can't get it to return battery percentage.

So I have the original cube but using it with zibgee2mqtt and the cube itself is quite aware of what side it's on etc, in fact it remembers what side it came from and also has detection for turn, slide so for anyone not invested in the alexa/cloud nonsense the older model might well be a good value pickup right now.

At about $4 less then the Pro, Home Assistant geeks (yeah, you have to be pretty fluent in HA to program this) can get all the functionality of the new cube, in both modes, and even more besides.

Have kitbashed a smartlife/hubitat zigbee temperature/humidity sensor. Take one WiFi smartlife t/h/l sensor with screen and a zigbee t/h sensor without screen and attach the second to the first - and done.
There is a slight difference in reading, but the ex smartlife zigbee sensor is surprisingly more accurate.. If I was more skilled I'd combine them in the same case... And pull power from the USB for both.

Fantastic idea, but unfortunately not something I could ever use, as we have (several) cats. And I'd hate to think what kind of chaos would be caused by this cube being batted around the desk, floor and stairs by a bored kitty.

Great vid as usual, Paul. My issue with this would be remembering which action does what. Even after a couple of years, my wife doesn't always get the voice command syntax right, so gets annoyed. I can't imagine what things she will do by doing some action incorrectly, and say, setting the oven to 250 (Gas Mark 6 in old money) when she meant to open the blinds.

We solved this for our kids by labelling each side with stickers and implementing a “help” feature where the echo device in the room will remind you of the gestures for the given side when you shake the cube.

If you want a hub then buy an Aqara device with a built-in hub such as the Aqara 2K Security Indoor Camera Hub G3 or a the Aqara Smart Hub E1

Bought v1, ended up using node-red to listen to the zigbee events, parsing it out to get more events. Ended up using rfid tags as a far simpler solution rather then keeping track of the cube. I would bump the queue from time, making rfid tags that I can scan a better solution for myself. I wander what the raw zigbee events look like for the pro version or if the selling point of pro is the app and integrations such as matter.
The cube is a fun mini party trick, though the novelty wore off quickly for me. Still recommend if your curious about it, though starting with only buying one would be good so you know if it meets your needs before getting a second one.

*** PLEASE ANSWER *** The Aqara Cube T1 Pro can now control Alexa Routine and is a Matter Device. Since, now Alexa supports Matter Compatible devices. Is it possible to connect the Cube with Alexa and Control Alexa Routines WITHOUT HAVING THE AQARA HUB. Or the hub is still required and mandatory??

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Год назад

As far as I understand it the cube is still using zigbee. The hub will actually have matter, but Aqara have confirmed that this cube will have the relevant firmware to communicate with matter products via the hub. That's how I understand it anyway. So yes, the hub is still required.

I've seen you grow, and I really like the way you approach everything with humor.
I saw you have a Homey (Pro nowadays), is there an reason you shun this device? As it can do a whole bunch of things since Advanced Flows was added last year. It can measure up to a lot other competitors.
I'm really looking forward on your opinion of this device.

I know you are sponsored by Aqara, viewers would like know, does it work with Tuya/Smart life, as the app looks the same and it's ZigBee 3. Probably, Aqara would sell more device's, if they knew they where compatible with the biggest smart manufacturers Tuya.

But I guess if you can flip to a numbered side and dial that specific device (light, curtain) then ... Maybe that's when it gets useful.... To control blinds and lights and stuff with the dial feature

We just got two of the older cube models for our kids this Christmas and the kids love them! Each face of the cube is dedicated to a different device / function, so they can control their light switch (on / off), lamp (on/ off, brightness, colour), fan (on / off), Echo Dot (play / pause, volume, next track), TV (on / off, volume), and use it as a general purpose media / skill / scene selector across their devices.

Love Aqara and will be using them heavily in my new smart home. This gadget is cool and all ... but WHY ?? 🙂 I can't really think of a solid solid killer use case. So if I program all the faces to turn stuff ON, I should really program half of the sides to turn stuff OFF right ?? besides that, anything not stuck to a wall is gonna get lost in my house. I'm happy to hear from people who've found an awesome use case for this thing other than being "nerdy cool". 🙂
