Google >Alexa
I’m feeling triggered listening to you attempt to talk like “Young People”. 😜
@Oracladeus excellent idea
Hi Paul. Just spotted this 24/7 recording door camera from Aqara, doming in 2023 (maybe?) ruclips.net/video/p1dVVJ7ug_c/видео.html
Might be able to get rid of that Google one finally. ;)
Hey Paul, really great list you've put together. I'm about to start buying things for my home (the beginning of a beautiful journey), but I use Amazon DE. Do you have affiliate links for DE, or would you get the commission if I switch from the UK site to the DE site on the product page?
Thanks for keeping us entertained for such a long time Paul! Looking forward to another year!
Thanks man! Here's to another year!
Dancing Nisha is absolutely hilarious! 😂
That dance meme is hilarious. The expression on your wife's face makes it doubly funny. The Q106 smart lock has been very good for me. It loses the setting for locking automatically when closing the door so I dont bother using that feature but otherwise its been brilliant.
I've been catching up with Paul's videos over the past two weeks or so, and it's fun to see how he went from ridiculing Zigbee and Home Assistant at almost every opportunity, to now having both integrated in his day to day smarthome stuff.
To be fair to me things have changed dramatically in both areas since those videos were made and I stand by what I said at the time, Zigbee is now affordable and Home Assistant has improved significantly, though I still have major gripes with HA
@@paulhibbert To be fair to you I place more credibility with your reviews than I do some snarky RUclips commenter who is trying to justify his fan boy status. The snarky RUclips commenter thus described should be grateful to you as it's you and people like you that have driven the improvements we now all enjoy. Illegitimi non Carborundum, Paul.
@@acts9531 lol it's always funny to see people get upset at others for stating facts. Just because you like someone's videos doesn't mean you overlook the obvious. Paul explained himself and that should be the end. Why are people so trusting of youtubers, you know nothing of this man and there's nothing wrong with questioning someone.
The shaking head no at 2:50 for ladies comment had me laughing so hard I had to stop the video for a few minutes.
Reolink, Amcrest, and a few others make smart doorbells that support ONVIF. That will let you do 24 hour recording using a NAS, NVR, Blue Iris, etc. I have a cheap doorbell from XTU and it lets me do 24 hour recording on its internal microsd card too. Hopefully this helps Paul or someone else.
And unifi and... There's a lot of options for 24/7 recording. I think he like the cloud to much...
can't believe Philips Hue didn't make the cut 😂 ....i use a ton of Govee lights and agree that they really are good value and generally very reliable. I have a Hue motion sensor triggering 5 sets (!) in my kitchen via an Alexa routine and it works pretty much instantly and flawlessly. I also use the Tado system and after over a year of use its been pretty much perfect, love it.
Id take what he says with a grain of salt - I have primarily Hue and Lifx and they work flawlessly.
almost the BEST Saturday morning wake up pleasure! Definitely the BEST youtube home automation content. thank you.
Love the star trek stuff this week, also looking forward to seeing how voice control works in home assistant when they start to roll it out this year natively, Live Long and Prosper my friend!
Thanks for video, great work.
Great video as always Paul. You'll be pleased to know my Mrs is just as happy as yours with all the smart tech around the house 😆
3:29 😂 Neesha dancing was wicked.
Excellent video Paul. Good run down of everything.
Hey Paul, once matter drops in latter 2023, you should do a best case start from scratch video as a what if you had to start all over again and what it would look like.
As always Paul... Entertaining and informative. Thank You
Legend has it Paul is still waiting for the front door feed.
I'll still be waiting long after the human race has expired and the cockroaches have taken over! 😂
I currently use Broadlink light switches because at the time they were the only players in town to use a non-live neutral in the UK, but they don't seem to last beyond a year and begin regularly dropping connections afterwards. So I was looking for an alternative and the Aqara was on my radar through your channel. What I didn't know until I saw this vid was that Aqara did a remote switch that could activate other switches. This is a perfect solution to 2 and 3 way light switches without having to do surgery on your ceiling roses and put in a Sonof or similar. So thanks, Paul!
Thanks for another great video. Reolink has a doorbell camera that has been working pretty well for me and you can record to micro SD card, the cloud, and / or an NVR.
Love the Zemismart products I’m a big fan. The LIFX bit was hilarious and so true.
That meme featuring your wife is ... brave of you, let's say. I hope you make it to next week's episode. 😉
Hey Paul,
Genuinely look forward to your content every week and even got the wife on board with a few products thanks to your videos (although still working on getting her to buy off on Home Assistant). Do you have any opinion on the whole Eufy situation?
Happy Saturday Paul. Thanks.
Happy Saturday Ron!
That edit at 3:31 had me lolling 😁
She's just seen it, I got off lightly with a "Paaaaaaauuuuuuuul" 🤣
That bit cracked me up too, genius editing there Paul! 🤣
EDIT: I love that it makes an appearance several times again in the vid, favourite meme for me too 😂😂
You're a character Paul! Love it mate
I've been called worse 😂
@@paulhibbert Much..... much worse.... 👀 😎
Chain of Command Pt II, one of my favourite episodes, and the gadget stuff was interesting too. 🤣
Great, I spent the last 2 months coming to the conclusion that Tuya is the way to go for most of my new smarthome. So thanks for confirming my suspicions. I like Aqara but am still in the process of getting them to play with Tuya and Home Assistant. I would like to add to your list a big shoutout to the Sonoff Zigbee Dongle Plus which I just got which is a beautiful piece of hardware and works like a charm with Home Assistant. I would have got the Conbee 2 but not easily available here. Also I'm noticing HomeKit will be a large part of my new setup so would be good if you could make more videos about Homekit integration, especially with Home Assistant. Keep up the good work as ever. The dancing Neesha meme is a winner 🙂
I hope 2023 brings a sensibly priced smart lock that can raise the handle
Hi Paul, I use the Unifi G4 doorbell, and it records 24/7, love the doorbell
Poor Google reactions hasn't affected me at all (US)... It's quite responsive and though there are some issues with understanding me on occasion, the vast majority of the time, it works very well.
paul i am still using the Rollerhouse 1-1/8" (28mm) Battery Powered Motor Kityou showed us. i still love it
Nice!!
I love this video. Please don’t die
I am using for camera, wireless AP and network switch the Ubiquiti products, the router (Dream Machine PRO) had a hard drive, 24hr recording for all cameras and later only motions are kept, great for monitoring IoT deviced, seamless integration in HA. home asistant!.... :)
Hi Paul, Another great Vlog. Very Interesting. Have a great week.
Thanks man, Happy Saturday!
This might have been mentioned already but Reolink do a doorbell now that offers continuous recording providing it’s linked to a NVR. Thanks for another great vid
One of the best videos! Thank you Paul.
Question: have you thought about making a live video? Like a Q&A with the followers?
Thanks dude! I don't know if I could do a Live video, I actually suffer really badly with anxiety and I think it would kill me! 😂
I love my ubiquity doorbell with 24/7 local recording.
There are Broadlink buttons that can start Alexa Routines too,and there only 25€ per 4 switch
PS, Broadlink's buttons can also start routines, but since you get 4 of them on one unit, it's not as compact as flic, and they appear as a motion sensors, so there's no double clicking so if you want an on/ff, you need to devote one of the buttons to "on" and one to "off". I also like my Lutron (US only) gear and Yokink (motion and temp sensors, worth checking out).
so true about the google hubs not streaming their own cameras
Looking forward to you sampling a new Star Trek NG episode each time from now on ;)
You forgot Phillips Hue. We all know how much you love them. 🤣
Hey Paul, love the video! Have you used the Nest skill for Amazon Alexa? I’m not sure how well it works with an Echo Show, but I have my Nest doorbell sound working with my echo devices.
Some govee products have now enabled local control. It's a toggle switch in the settings for those which support it. Sadly my TV lights aren't on the list
I love these videos! have you ever found something to control 2.4g based remotes?
and just after you said Google was shite guess what I had an advert for? 😂😂😂 I got rid of all my Google speakers and chromecasts and now have Echo speakers and firesticks. They just worrrrkkk 😂😂
The philips hue light switches also can do alexa routines now, at least in the USA they can not sure if they do in the UK.
It was a good video, and more people should see it.
Hi, nice and funny video like always. But where is Tuya brand on your list?
Always amazing 😂😂😂😂
I've got a pair of Govee wi-fi bulbs (which replaced a pair of broken lifx, wouldn't recommend lifx to anyone), and find them great, apart from home assistant. The integration seems to not work more often than not.
Aqara was rock solid till recently but now have had problems with Alexa integration - routines not triggering - and then they’ll sudden they start working again within a day or two.
Great video Paul 😂 your wife is a Saint, 10/10 for putting up with your shit 😂 😂 😂
For those interested in a cheaper option than tado or aqara TRVs. I can recommend the Moes smart radiator thermostats on Aliexpress. They are around £25 each with postage. They connected instantly to Home Assistant using my conbee stick.
Hi Paul love your videos they are very informative and funny to watch
I was wondering if you have tried netatmo doorbell they are compatible with Alexa , Google , apple home kit and home assistant it’s subscription free hard wired and you can store the videos externally, the only thing I would suggest is that you change the sd card because the one they supply fails.
Once again great videos and please keep making them
Thanks man! That sounds awesome, not tried it yet so will add it to the list!
BroadLink actually has a button product that triggers Alexa routines. It’s a 4 button pad that connects to the BroadLink hub. Been using it for over a year
love the start trek Cardassian reference...are we the Cardassians in this scenario though? 🤔
Not sure how comfortable you are with a bit of light soldering, but I'd love to see you try out WLED and Hyperion!
I have been using Nest Hub Max with Nest doorbell without incident for 2 years now. Maybe yours got infected by Philips Hue. lol ps Still haven't taken the bait. Love your whimsical sense of humor. Please keep the vids coming!
Another great video, Paul
FYI, at 11 minutes you mention a link to thermostat videos, but there’s no link.
Arrggh, thanks dude! Updated now!
I love the covee hexagon panels. Planning on making my own, but these look awesome. Where did you get them? I didn’t saw them in the list in the description
Some of the Govee products have local lan functionality. I am currently controlling my RGBIC strips locally within Hubitat. Also Amcrest have a video doorbell that has rtsp functionality that you can stream/record 24/7 locally to an NVR
Get the Unifi doorbell instead. 24/7 recording and integrates well with Homeassistant.
Awesome
1:20 👏 👏 👏 Chef's kiss.
THERE. ARE. 4. LIGHTS!!
Thanks for pointing out that nothing mich has happened in 2022 - product wise. I am happy that I learned how to make any button or sensor to work with home assistant , because the products to buy seem to be still shitty.
Ubiquiti's Doorbell works ok with my HA and Homekit setup ok... Maybe try that?
i still love the Chromecast audio.
Hi Paul. How many hubs Are you using in your smart home? I am trying to minimize the number of hubs besides the one built into the Echo. Love your content. - john
Govee now has a LAN API that allows for local control. It's working great through Home Assistant.
Well, it happened again. I was baited. By the master. Woke up and saw there was a new video and BAM, master ba *static* 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I will never not find that joke funny lol
The new Aqara G4 doorbell has 24/7 recording onto a memory card within it's USB C powered indoor unit. Outside unit is battery powered.
I think you may have got your wish.
It also has face recognition built in so there may be a way to trigger a certain meme if a certain person approaches the property.
I have one on it's way to me for review!! Now I'm super excited!
@@paulhibbert excellent. I'll keep an eye out.
Come to think of it the Alexa doorbell also monitors 24/7 because I get a notification every time a fox runs up to my front door to hop over a nearby wall. It doesn't record 24/7 but any motion will trigger it. These doorbells also trigger Alexa routines. I have three of them and one of them just turns on an outside light for 5 minutes and monitors my greenhouse door for movement as I have packages delivered to the greenhouse when I'm not in.
The Master returns two weeks in a row!
Try Reolink doorbell. I haven't looked into this but it's a fairly new product.
If you want to get rid of your doorbell why not try UniFi Protect from Ubiquiti and their doorbell? It’s a whole ecosystem which can extend to WiFi access points, switches etc. It is quite expensive but it will do 24 hr recording to local storage and allow you to ditch Google!!
Thanks for the recommendation man, I shall check them out! I love Ubiquiti stuff!
Came to say the same thing. Switched from Nest to Unifi Protect and apart from the cost… no regrets
I can't believe you brought that traumatising Star Trek episode into this!!!!
hmmmm... "No echo products in the bathroom...." Challenge accepted! Jeff does not have enough yachts! Show-15 now installed in my bathroom over the can (as you note, this is giving it the respect it deserves). "Alexa... tell me a joke".... I have heard so many bad jokes (since that's generally all you have time for whilst doing your business), but I got it hooked up to the heater and the mirror so I can now say "Shower time" and "Shower off" thus saving me having to hit two-three extra buttons! Like you said... The Ladies LOVE it....yeah... I know they do...
Glad i am not the only one having issues with google devices I feel as if they got much slower. I thought it was only me…🎉🎉🎉
My 25 TCP WiFi bulbs are doing a great job holding my shelf down.
Hi Paul great video as always. I moved away from lifx because of price but have started to pick a couple up again just because they are HomeKit and Alexa compatible and have high output on the whites as well as the colours. Any suggestions for something that’s got good light output and is HomeKit compatible? I like HomeKits integration on my iPhone control centre.
The wife dance was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen
Yep, it was nice knowing Paul. No flowers. 😂
If you want reliable 24/7 recording look no further than the Unifi Doorbell and the other Protect cameras. It Integrates well with Home Assistant. There obviously is a cost to entry in the ecosystem however if you want reliability and ease of use...
Hi Paul, I have the same issue with Google when I have it on dual language (Dutch and UK English). When I switch to ...... US..... English it works a lot better. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't support Dutch which doesn't meet the WAF. But Google doesn't either I realize while typing....
I have home assistant with a SkyConnect dongle 👍🏻
Haven't even got number 4 yet and I don't believe it!
Cool
@Paulhibbert why not use http request with the flic buttons?
I got them because of your review, and wow they are amazing and easy to setup with http to home assistant
@Paulhibbert I believe people are trying to pretend to be you!
I have screenshots etc I can share, but for all who watch this amazing man watch out!
Where did you find the Aqara single rocker remote switch? Trying everywhere to get some of these!!
WeMo is the worst smart home device maker I’ve ever had products from, just terrible
Philips
@@JanJanJanJanJanJanJanJanJan2 Nah my favourite smart lights are from Phillips, I’ve got 3 Hue Go’s that I’ve had pretty much since the start of my smart home journey & they’re rock solid for me
Agreed! Every Wemo product I’ve tried has sucked and I’ve replaced
*Disowns Gaz
@@timmy8784 Garbage aren’t they, first smart home products I ever bought & they were so bad I almost gave up on building a smart home, thankfully I carried on building with far more reliable solutions
You should consider using an old computer & Blue Iris to moitor your cameras. You could get rid of the nest stuff.
if starting a new home automation project, should I use the aqara ecosystem or go for a generic zigbee equipment?
Doesn't the Broadlink smart button (I think SR3 4KEY) work with Amazon routines too aswell as the Flic buttons?
@Paul Hibbert If you want to remove the google door cam issue. Get a Amcrest AD-410 Door Bell. You can use blueiris for 24/7 recording or other camera software. The camera works just like any other IP camera for connection. And Alexa has a amcrest skill, so you can get notifications via Alexa and use Alexa shows to view the camera feed. Make sure to use the amcrest pc software to setup the camera bitrate, etc. The phone app is garbage for setting up the video quality.
Just wanted to clarify something with the Govee stuff: The Home Assistant Community Store has a Govee-LAN integration. It communicates directly via LAN (with a fallback to the cloud), so it'll still work as normal even if Govee's servers are offline!
I’ve been away from Smart Home RUclips for a year. Glad to see your wife hadn’t come to her senses and left you. 🎉
where did your wife get the Mario dress?? mine would go as you say mental over it lol
Time to look at the reolink doorbell mate, thatll record 24/7 to an NVR
Have you tried the Wiz Connected bulbs, think they got rebranded recently to Philips Wiz (Were owned by same company), they can also be locally controlled, and has a HA Integration, and are wifi so don't need a hub. They have also released a V2 of the app which is meant to enable you to do presence detection in a room based on wifi signal interference if you have multiple Wiz devices in same room.
Great Vid as always 🙂
Genuine question though: how many times do you set your Kitchen cupboard lights to anything (like your "rainbow snaking effect") other than plain old warm white?
My Alexa devices understand me perfectly now that I've sold them / binned them. I think they got the message 🤣
Shout of for Shelly Devices generally. I use a couple of their relays, plus their TRV's and whilst maybe not the cheapest, you can see and feel the quality and they work super reliably.
Looking forward to 2023's instalments of the channel 🙂
I personally don't use the snaking effect, but I also don't tend to have discos in my house 😂
@@paulhibbert Ditto. I pretty much always have all of my "coloured" lights, left to the warm white settings. Brightness is the thing that is adjusted.
On most of our lights - Kitchen strip lights included , I have time specific scenes that dim things "overnight", so that you don't get blinded if you ever get up for a glass of water or whatever when you're half asleep.
Hey Paul, I just noticed that you were plugging your conbee stick in a Raspberry Pi. Just a heads-up, if you're booting your Pi from an SD card, it's a matter of time until it dies. I learned it the hard way, and a few of my friends had similar issues, too. If you're using Home Assistant in a production environment (as in you depend on it, and most importantly - if your wife is used to routines controlled by it) - I'd suggest to migrate to something that can run of an SSD. I was using an USB to m-sata adapter in the past, have it running on a radxa rock 5b with NVMe SSD now. Much more reliable.
Google assistant on my phone works light years better than any Alexa device. I’ve heard Alexa stay I can find living room TV so many time I want to throw it. I only keep it for same reason because it pairs with Ring doorbell.
