Reminder to self to not allow wife and kids to watch this video ("Its not personal, its business!" 😅). The automated bar reminds me of a similar video Rob made on his channel ("The Hook up" for his ultra short throw projector. Reed - you should totally do something like that with your Optoma - then maybe you can convince your wife and kids how productive you have been (j/k) 🙃. Keep up the great work!
Great video Reed! Thanks for having me on amongst all these other really cool automations! It always amazes me how creative people get with their automations, definitely got some great ideas I need to steal from this!
I do maintenance at a night club, and we have a huge problem with people messing with the thermostats, we end up with one or two of the six thermostats being on heat, opposite of the others, so finally was able to make an automation so that if any thermostat gets changed, they all change with it. No more watching them fight it out while the electricity bill suffers.
Some inspiring ideas here! I’m looking forward to trying out the dishwasher hack. Also Ally’s reaction to get shot the later “It’s not personal, it’s just business” had me in tears!
Withings makes a sleep tracker mat that goes under your mattress. It has pressure and vibration sensors and works with Home assistant. In case people don't want to diy the sensor. I got it on sale boxing day for $70CAD plus about $30 for shipping, taxes and customs fees. Normally I think it's around $150+tx etc.
You mentioned in your video that if you had a kitchen vent that opened you would set it to increase the audio on your alexa device. You could use a smart plug with power monitoring and plug your vent into that and use a webcore script to monitor power usage when power rises above a certain level just open/close a alexa vittual contact switch and have that trigger a alexa routine to increase the volume , then the reverse with it drops below a set level. I do this with several different devices around my house, tv, humidifier, etc. Not sure you could do this as you have a custom vent, my vent just plugs into a power plug inside the cabinet its mounted to so easy for me
Man love your videos. I've spent hours doing home automation because of your channel. Lots of fun. This series are great, lots of good ideas. Love the one for the bedroom automation.
They sell stand alone motion activated sprinklers exactly for this sort of thing (cats, dogs, deer, etc). My neighbor got me one when his cat was coming over and using our area as their toilet.
Great video again buddy.. Bed sensor is totally worth building.. I took the plunge last year and it's only limited by my imagination. keep up the good work..
Have you tried hooking up a relay coil to a smart switch to control a low-voltage switch (like for a gas fireplace, buzzer, light or something)? Sorry if you've covered that and I missed it. Really enjoy the channel--entertaining and informative.
Very cool! I really like the thermostat automation - I have kids that can step on something and reach my nest thermostats... I'll be implementing those limits!
Those lights under the dishwasher is similar to what my Cove dishwasher does. It has a red light when working (just one to be subtle) and a green one when done. It's a problem because the unit is so quiet, you can't ever hear it.
Hello! Im writing to you from Hungary, and I would like to ask you for a question. I’m kinda new in home automation so I would like to ask a thing. I have an Echo Dot 4, and a Xiaomi smart hub. I have some stuff connected together, but I don’t have a camera yet. I’m planning to buy a camera with 360 view but obviously I can change the view manually. What do you think, if I’m putting this camera let say above my front door (in the middle of front wall), and putting two Xiaomi motion sensors to each corner of front wall. Can I setup the camera to turn that way where a motion will be detected? Or do you prefer to instal more cameras?
I have one of the first Google Nest Thermostats.. I used IFTT to lower the Thermostat when my wife turns it too high.. But it only works when the temp goes above a certain temp.. not when it's set above a certain temp.. So if the temp goes above 70, change the thermostat to 67..
Make that when the lego button is pressed too many times to block the signal to the lights and to make a announcment to alexa. Its interesting to watch your home automations.Greetings from Bulgaria!
That dishwasher contact sensor with the temperature sensor is genius! I was wondering how to solve this problem! (And what the purpose of the temp sensor is in my aqara contact sensor is)
Hi! Great videos! - a great help !!! I have a Aqara Vibration Sensor + HomeKit (+Pushcut app if thats any use) - I wanted an automation to do something when the washing machine stops detecting motion - issue I am having is that when the machine stops during the cycle this triggers the alert so I wanted something just when its finished completely - any ideas? - thanks!
@@neildaveyneos Sorry I do not have an iOS device, so I can't provide you an example. Maybe searching for something like "iOS shortcut add condition" will help you.
you should buy the new coffee maker from Keurig . I have an automation in the morning that tells me my coffee is ready. and once my coffee brews remotely the light turns to green to let me know its ready
Automations over setup (might send video across): - The same temp lowering on thermostat with energy bills going bonkers - Motion lights using CCTV, ZigBee light switch and Frigate to MQTT. - Notify to Google Speaker what bins are due to be emptied next day - Notify when washing machine/dryer is finished and send push notification to tell you. Turns off auto after 30 mins to stop Spinning on dryer - Using CCTV camera to notify when someone is coming on drive. - Using motion sensors around house and selective smart bulbs, dim the lights late at night to not wake you up when going bathroom
Some really good ideas there… loved the Australian guy, there’s another guy over there who had similar problems but took it to a whole other level, I saw he’s videos a few years ago haven’t seen them again.. does anyone know of him ?
Do you happen to have a link to the automation.yaml for the dishwasher? I picked up the sensor and the lights, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to deploy them to achieve that effect.
Another question from me about amazon echos: I use my echo flex connected to a Bluetooth speaker to play music, when stop the music and turn the speaker off, the music then plays on the flex. Any ideas how to stop that?
Our dishwasher routine isn't nearly that cool. We have a dirty/clean magnet, but I also made an alexa routine so I just say "Alexa I did the dishes" and it says "OK I'll tell s****(my teen)" and then it waits 4 hours, then turns their smart bulb orange. They won't allow an alexa in their room. 😆
Hi I have a question. Do you know of a automations that would work with the Google assistant platform using a Nest protect smoke alarm and Rgb smart lighting " non Phillips hue" to trigger a visual alarm signaling a fire alarm or a Carbon monoxide?
I agree on the RM4 Pro. I have it & use it & it works great. Setting it up is a PITA . . . but I've figured out how to access the codes in the backend where you can edit it & get it reloaded. I posted it on the HA forum.
Video idea: how to make a smart home that doesn't look like a smart home (no obvious sensors, no visible robot vacuum, switches that work like ole school switches, etc).
cat vs sprinkler: i wouldn't use a sprinkler, i'd use something that can aim the water at the critter. should be effective against all kinds of critters: cats, pigeons, burglars... looks like your wife got her revenge at the end :-)
@@liamgriffith You can analyse the camera picture to find out where the critter is in the video, then use that info to find out where it is in the real world (direction and distance), then aim the water cannon in that direction, compensate for gravity and FIRE! And if you've done everything right, the critter gets soaked before it even knows what's happening :-) and will hopefully think twice about coming back :-) BTW, Matthias wandel has a video on his channel where he built a contraption (out of Lego?) to shoot bottle caps at squirrels. Problem was, that thing was too noisy, the squirrels ran away before it could acquire a target. But it worked great with his kids :-)
@@mrxmry3264 That would be awesome to have it targeting the little buggers. I do like to keep my automations as simple as possible though. What you can’t see in the video is a second impact sprinkler running off the same Eve Aqua, which blasts the cats at closer range. I found that having two spread apart compensated for the noise alerting the cats. Simple redundancy with 95% accuracy and nightly entertainment ;-)
Hmmm I don't know if I've made a video like that before. I've shown some automations that needed to be fixed but not a dedicated video to just the worst automations. That could be good though!

Add a condition like "when no vibration for x minutes" then trigger the notification. So a short period of no vibration won't trigger it anymore.
