I think people who think there is an “ugly” phase, only have locs for aesthetic reasons. Which I mean …. I guess, people can do what they want. But it’s also important to be cognizant of the perspectives you’re attaching to locs especially given the history of locs seen as negative, unkempt, unruly, etc.
I definitely agree ! But I also know they are people who genuinely want locs for other reasons but STILL have this logic in their head . It's really a shame , but I know how hard it is to overcome an insecurity as well . I guess my main point was trying to get people to realize it is IN FACT an insecurity , not a part of the "process" . Definitely need to change that perspective like you said , because we already have enough people again us &our locs . Why do we do it to ourselves smh .
I don't believe in the ugly stage but I do feel that the shrinkage makes me look like a guy because I have body dysmorphia. . I've decided to put on headwraps so Iook more feminine. I dont think that's wrong.
This tender headedness was the biggest surprise for me. I had not heard anyone talk about this before locking my hair. My head can only tolerate styles for 3-4 hours max.

Thank you so much for sharing your stories, journey and advice with us. I turned 59 on Monday. I’ve been exploring locs and considering my own journey for a minute now. Hearing you today in part 1 and this part 2 video sealed it for me. I loved your perspective on the so called “ugly stage” so much that I shed a tear of joy at a stop light while listening. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to my loctician. She told me not to wash my locs, mist my locs or put any rose water in my locs for at least 6 months to a year and to only put oil in it. “You should be breathing when you’re sleeping” 💀👏🏾😂. I plan to get comb coils when my hair is long enough. In the mean time I’m living vicariously through you and others posting about loc journeys. Wearing my short natural hair has been so enjoyable and freeing. New career now but was a stylist for almost 20 years. There was always a hot comb or chemical treatment on my hair all my life because I was told I have “ bad hair”. I’ve since discovered that was a lie. My natural kinky hair is quite lovely. It’s sad how many young black kids are set on a path to dislike their hair the natural way it grows from their scalp at a very young age, I was one of them. Very helpful video post, keep up the good work. 💕
Aww I am so happy to hear this! Forgive my late reply though ❤️ So happy WE were able to pull out that self love. I used to be the same way. Hopefully you start soon, if you haven't! You will definitely fall in love with your hair then. Good luck my love 🥰
@@HerbNLocs I got my coils early July! Been locked a month and some change, coming up on 2! I am so at peace with my hair! So so cool! Positive vibes from family as well. Legit feel like this is the “real” me lol🤎🤎🤎
I think we went to school together lol you go girl! I’m glad you started a RUclips channel! I just two strand twist my hair 3 weeks ago and looking for some maintenance tips
You are preaching sis! Every time I think about the amount of time I used to spend on my loose natural hair I get angry 😅 it’s a NO for me, never again.
@@HerbNLocs I’m also on my second set of locs. The first day I was loose natural after combing out my first set was INSTANT regret! My arms were like “girl no” and I cried for an hour because I couldn’t get my hair to stay in a style. It was so uneven
This is my second set of locs and I never knew anything about budding or ugly stage in 5 years of carrying my hair. It was so bad that I didn’t separate my hair for months until my friends mother had to call me to talk about it 😂. May be in just oblivious but it’s weird getting on RUclips now just to see what others have been up to and seeing all these problems. Secondly I am two weeks in and I have washed my hair at least 3 times, why would anyone not wash their hair unless you rely on a professional and the first time i loc’d my hair , the professional asked me to come in every week, washed and palm rolled it. RUclips is an interesting place😂. Lovely video btw.
Lol ahhh man , the friend's Mom said enough !!! 😭🤣 lol but girlllll , the loc journey ranges from farrrrrrr to wideeeeee , north to south , ... east to west ! I hear allllll types of things lol . It really puts it into perspective because I see people stress over certain things like self maintenance for example ... baby I just WHIP through that retwist so unprofessionally and it looks amazing every time . I think there's just sooooooo much information out there , some very conflicting & it really just overwhelms people . Luckily for me , I chose the path of a more free journey , while also not really being a high maintenance woman so my path has been personalized & beautiful . Some people want "perfection" for their locs . So I've determined , it all just depends . But ayeeee I'm glad you've been washing , the folks need to know they don't have to wait ! I'm sure your locs & scalp have been thanking you lol . I really appreciate you watching & taking the time to comment love 💕💕 Cheers to journey #2 for both of us !!
YESSS I love to hear it . Glad you've been experiencing the self maintenance life . Every journey is rewarding ... but it's just something about starting them on your own . Cheers to your journey ! Hope it's still going well 💕

Watching these videos actually help. Cause I was wondering if my locs will ever get thicker. I did hit a year in July and some locs are smaller than others
I'm so glad you find them helpful 💕 Being a year , they definitely have the potential to continue to thicken up ! Hopefully they fill out to be the size you want 🥰
Heyyyy !!! 😅😊🎈 Thank you so much for the support ! 🤍 3 months is usually when they start turnin up the heat for a lot of people ! Lol really making changes . How’s it been going ? I’m glad to hear you’re ready for the journey 🥰 I’m sure it’ll be a great one !
You’re very welcome. And whew lordt! The struggle has already been real😂. I do my own hair. We fought twice. It kicked my ass both times, especially trying to retwist. My second retwist lasted all of two hours. And finding the right products has been kind of a struggle. It seems like no matter how much I try to moisturize with water it’s dry and itchy. I do wash like every two to three weeks depending on how much itching or product buildup I have.
I love love love your energy and your beautiful hair 👻💜 I am 1 month loc’d and I love it! I just started experiencing budding and I love it! She is beautiful every step of the way 😍 thank you for sharing and I am a new subbie because your vibe is awesome 🤗
Gloriaaaaaa ... thank you , awww 🥰🌱 . I'm glad I could help you along the way ! I'm a character so you won't get bored with me lol . Love that you have been embracing this journey . It's so intriguing & it truly is just beautiful to see once you accept it . Some people chose not to accept it & can only see the end results so they miss out on all those beautiful stages , like you said , the budding . Cheers to many many more months beautiful ! & Thank you for your support ❤️
@@HerbNLocs I did. It's been a week today. I see some budding already. It's going good. I use water, rose water, avocado oil, jojoba oil, and peppermint oil every 2-3 day, water daily. I'm loving it. My daughter wants to start now. She's 16.
Yeah I keep telling people oil is a sealant not a moisturizer. Water is a moisturizer that’s why it’s in all products. Aloe juice or rose water those are liquids as well a lot of people shouldof learned that as loose naturals the LOC or LCO methods which required water or some type of liquid then even aloe juice and rose water also isn’t one size fit all but WATER is and now since I’m in almost my third months of my locs I’m moisturizing as needed or on wash day and misting and drenching your locs is different which is also why people have issues with unraveling and dryness bc they also don’t seal everything in after or they are over saturating their hair and it’s not wash day 😭
The crazy part is ... I didn't learn anything about the LOC / LCO methods w my loose natural hair . But I also can't say I was really willing to learn . I was always just overwhelmed 😭🤣 . When I got locs is when I started really learning . But you are 100% right ! We should definitely know about that 😅 Rose water &aloe juice are definitely case by case , I've heard some people say it actually dries their hair out . Water is always gone hold it down though like you said lol . As far as that last part ... you just made me realize that I really have been saturating my hair too much . So I'm gonna pay more attention to that . My locs are just so thick , I feel like I need to do the most lol . But you are right ! Thank you for that ❤️😅
@@HerbNLocs man I learned with my starters quick from the over saturation lol that one tip “water makes them Loc faster” I had ran with it no lie it does help a lot bc everyone always tell me omg your hair is budding and locking so fast I’m still learning the stages too I just really remember that my first 6 months they are starter locs lol u need to make a video on that! but it also over spraying them made my locs unravel and in some areas they became really dry bc I thought I could just spray them and leave them but no I need to put a oil or something on top or I’m defeating the purpose (the LOC or LCO method) so I just been misting and sealing as needed like 2-3 times a week … also with aloe juice I know forsure it’s a protein that’s why it would cause some people dryness and that they don’t know their hair porosity low and normal can’t take too much aloe juice idk about rose water if it have protein I don’t think it does imma look it up lol so u are right with both being case by case and just hair porosity too! Trust me most of the stuff I know about locs I got from YOU and Jupiter locs! I studied y’all before I Locd my hair I got over the detangling and becoming a slave to curly hair products lol….You be in my head too like “leave your hair alone you don’t always need a retwist, stop with the bleach” lol so I’m getting better and learning bc if I was loose natural I wouldof bleached my hair again bc I did it every two months smh I just added some purple adore to calm my nerves I just want these one set of locs I will die if I have to start over I’m so tender headed and having locs made that even worse lol I was telling my mom like nah this is it I can’t comb them out ever bc I know I would be in so much pain I was wigging out when I had lint I think in my second month like howwwww can I get lint and these just got started lmao 🤣
I love your energy!!! I'm thankful I found your video. I have a question. I had locs for 6 years and loved every minute of every day I had them. Then alopecia showed up and I was livid. Six years of that wonderful hair journey and this happened. Do you have any suggestions for me, as I want to start my locs again? I've been fading, short afros and I'm just not liking these styles at all. I'm used to having hair on my head. My hair is 4 C, it has grown about 3 1/2 inches, the back is really thick and has a bit more length. There are some areas in the crown that are very thin. What do you suggest I do? Can you suggest treatments I can use to help with strengthen the crown area? Thanks, little angel. Be blessed! 😊🥀
Omg awww thank you so much 🥰💕 !! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos . Glad to have your support . But oh wow , 6 years , I'm sure they were beautiful !! So sorry to hear it had to come to an end . Now I'm not an expert in this area , but I have heard some amazing things about onions and hair growth !! Seriously , maybe try to look into the onion juice remedy where it's applied topically , biotin supplements . Scalp massages may seem minor but definitely crucial to stimulating hair growth ! zinc supplements , aloe / coconut oil topically . Those are just some suggestions I would say give a fair shot . A CONSISTENT fair shot my love . But whatever you choose to do .... make sure you're following up with those scalp massages . Hopefully this helps and so sorry for the late reply . Keep me updated 💕 Have a great day !

You are preaching sis! Every time I think about the amount of time I used to spend on my loose natural hair I get angry 😅 it’s a NO for me, never again.
I'm tryna let the folks know a lil somethin baby ! 😅 lol but fr an ABSOLUTE NO ! Everytime I think about detangling my bones ache ! NEVER AGAIN .
@@HerbNLocs I’m also on my second set of locs. The first day I was loose natural after combing out my first set was INSTANT regret! My arms were like “girl no” and I cried for an hour because I couldn’t get my hair to stay in a style. It was so uneven
same here ❤
Don’t come back crying when them thangs don crunched off 😂
This just made me laugh 😭😭😂😂🤭
This just made me laugh 😭😭😂😂🤭
@@HerbNLocs 💕💕
I started my own locs and washed the first week. I have 4c hair so I had no slippage and my hair has been locing up fast!
YESSS I love to hear it . Glad you've been experiencing the self maintenance life . Every journey is rewarding ... but it's just something about starting them on your own . Cheers to your journey ! Hope it's still going well 💕
@@HerbNLocs it is. Somtimes its hard confidence wise but other than that I'm enjoying it 😌
@@aryanahm.4086 That's okay , you'll have some "rough" days in the beginning . It only gets better with time . Let those babies get nice & seasoned ... that'll be the one thing that ALWAYS brings you confidence ☺💕 You got it !
Miss HerbN Locs! You are the TRUTH! PREACH! Bad hair days no ugly stage it's the process of our natural hair. Ghurl....you are so on POINT! Glad I found your channel!
Omg Heyyyy Miss Shereice ! ☺️🤍 Thank you so much !! I'm flattered . Absolutely no ugly stage ! Just a bunch of nonsense .

New subbie here✌🏽LOVE your energy and helpful tips! This was confirmation to start mine asap!❤
Ayeeee , thank you so much ! 🥰🤍 Come on over to the loc fam !!!
New follower here. I’m loving your content so far. I’ll be 3 months loc’d on the 30th of this month. I’m here for the long haul.
Facts facts facts !!! Great video
Yesss Boo ! Thank you for watching ❤️
New sub. Beginning my journey Sunday. A little nervous but excited at the same time.
Thank you so much ☺️💛 . Did you end up starting ?! If so , how is it going ?
Actually, you should be breathing while you sleep........🤯 love it
😭🌚 Had to rethink some things lol . Thank you 🤍
Thank you so much for this video! You touched on so much I didn’t even know I needed to hear.😅 Hope to be on this journey soonnn
I hope you are soon as well , can’t wait to have you ! 🥰🌱 . I appreciate you watching , glad you enjoyed it !
@HerbNLocs_ thank you for the hair care tips. I. Will keep you posted.🥀🙏🥀🥀
Yes bleaching breaks down the keratin bonds in our hair our hair is keratin it breaks that down 🤣
