I still remember being a 10 year old with my crew cut and wearing my monkey boots, plus a badge with 'Don't Call Me Ska Face' on the black and white background with a silhouette of a rude boy.....man I was so proud of that badge 😆✌️ Being a kid growing up in the midlands during the early 80s, bands like the Specials and UB40 were a big deal 👍
Some of us never gave it up, still listen to me two tone, ska which is a genre of its own not incorrectly stated in the film as fusion of punk and reggae and northern soul... chasing 60 now and still the tunes are fresh to my ears :) A year later than this I myself ended up in a borstal in Redhill, 2 years Made in Britain was shown which was written on much of my casework as a rebel without a clue and in 84 a full documentary by Channel 4 was shown showing me in my skinheady punk glory that never gave up :D
There will never be anything greater than 2 -Tone music, it's influence is still out there today, it will never die, most of the 2 Tone bands are still going/touring in some shape or another. RIP Terry and Roger
I played that 'The Specials' album so many times it got worn down digitally on Spotify. I'm going to check out the TV series 'This Town' as it's got decent reviews. 5:05 just bumping into him in the street and chatting with him normally, you would never guess he's got those amazing piano skills.
I bought The Special's album, on the strength of the infectious A Message to you, Rudy. Some of it was quite... dour(?) Unhappy. Whatever, it was an introduction to old Jamaican music, none of which I'd ever heard before, and some of which I still have a great interest in. *Poor Terry Hall. I hope he is at peace, after what appears to have been a tough life.
I once saw him play a DJ set at a Love Music Hate Racism gig in Victoria Park. Must have been in 2008 if I am not mistaken. Yeah, but shame that he didn't continue making new music
Terry maybe no longer with us. His legacy will live with us forever. I absolutely love my ska from 79 till now it always sounds so fresh, never get tired of hearing all the iconic bands ❤
Thatcher had barely been in power before this exploded so the nod to her felt a little disingenuous. Wouldn't this all have happened anyway? I often wonder how different the UK's music scene would have been under alternative political circumstances. Could Ghost Town have been written a few years later and have had the same initial impact, its legacy notwithstanding? All rhetorical questions!
@@andywatts8654 Funded by your cathedral dean daddy of course. We've all got those, right? Just ask nicely for a little gift of a whole recording studio. That's the conservative way!
Enjoyed every minute of the 2Tone era, still watch tribute bands and regularly listen to the music.
It was short n sweet but worth it.
Same👍
44 years ago. Lordy. All of them young, earnest and hugely talented. Kids
producing an art form which was as English as HP Sauce. Wonderful .
But it wasn't English
whut😄
Gerry is a very clever, unassuming man. So much respect for these guys.
Jerry Dammers....LEGEND!
Fun! It came and went so fast, but it reverberated around the world through the 80s and still does to some degree.

Terry hall was a legend
"was" a legend????
@@BillyJango yes, Terry Hall has died in 2022
@@vinie3465 What is your point? Does that mean he is no longer a legend then?
@@BillyJango He's still a legend but he's dead. I think, you misunderstood what I said.
@@vinie3465 A lot of legends are dead.

This is why I follow this channel. Long live ska!
Neville was the epitome of Cool.
Loved the Red Jacket and Shades combo. 😎
Even though I was born in 1984, I grew up listening to all these groups, as my dad was a mod. But he also loved Punk, Ska, R&B.
Good grief, you are so beautiful!
@@blueabattoir Thank you, not bad for 40.
My parent's mates were the OG Mods
I’m 23 and love Two Tone❤️
Enjoy your life
Fascinating

He was always deadpan - that was him image
" dour ". It was for real, mate.
Fantastic.
Classic two tone records.
Ska will never die.
Will never understand why Jerry never continued being a musician and making records, such a shame.

He did do that Sun Ra stuff.
Making art to make a difference. When the change doesn't happen it's tough to take.
Nice two tone
I'm off to search the "Ghost Town" and "Stereotype" Special vids. See ya there😀
See Terry Hall there. RIP

“Okay Fred, now you’re a yaga yaga” it least that’s what I used to sing over 40 years ago.
Yes they are the lyrics
@@andywatts8654 Cheers! Glad to know I wasn’t butchering a great song.

It was a nod to thatchers newfound push for running your own business whereas labour was running the country into the ground

Jerry is very clever.
Rip Arthur gaps from the selecter 😢
Did he say that The Specials represent Thatcher's England?!?!?!?!
The benefits of immigration, folks. And still quintessentially British. An up yours message to you, the haters and brexiteers. From the rude boys.
Great comment. From ireland
Managed by Fred Perry.
Great Period to be a live 2024 is crap
Isn't it just. I honestly can't cope will modern life. I live in the past.
