I just got this piece today in orchestra. I've listened to it a million times and it still hits me in the feels. It is sooooooooooo fun to play! Am I right fellow cello?
Hell yea! I played this piece four years ago originally, but I still play it today because I love it that much
@StubbyPine you should meet the viola section. They're constantly complaining about how they never get the melody. Mr. J pulled a sneaky and got them Viva violas.
Hell yeah
so true
I just got it too 😎😎
Doug spata is officially my favorite orchestra composer
I prefer Richard Meyer, Doug Spata likes his use of spiccato, not a huge fan of that
Tai Oi same! You must be a fellow violist....
Mmm, both Richard Meyer and Doug Spata are amazing
Doug Spata's music sounds more "epic" idk. His music feels better to play than Meyer's in my opinion. Also 0:36 why do the Violas sound like horns tf.
Sameeeee
I am in love with this and im playing it in class
This was the last song I played with my orchestra before the Covid-19 pandemic, and also, it's by far my favorite piece we've played as an orchestra since Dragon Hunter in beginner orchestra.
Also, I'm a cellist, and taught myself viola during quarantine.
last concert that i went to before the pandemic shut everything down, i heard this song. it reminds me of three of my friends/8th graders i knew, and i don't think i'll ever see them again. stupid covid, i couldn't even say goodbye to them before they moved onto high school. :
NO WAY WE DID DRAGON HUNTER TOO until we got a new orch director :(
oh my god, dragon hunter became a tradition at my middle school. it started with my class back in 6th playing it, and now the teacher teaches it to every 6th grade class she has
I was extremely lucky to be apart of the orchestra that premiered this when I was in the 5th grade, this really didn’t set in stone me wanting to go into composition.
Now I’m a freshman in college, and this piece still brings good memories.
I'm in 7th grade, and we were SUPPOSED to do this piece but the other orchestra class didn’t like it, and thats the majority so we aren’t. It's really sad because as a cello, I find this piece to be very fun to play 😭
WHAT. IM IN 8TH GRADE RN AND IN 7TH GRADE WE PLAYED THIS FOR MY HONORS ORCHESTRA. IM ALSO A CELLIST OKG I’D CRY💔💔
@Victoria-i7u1n HELP I TOTALLY FORGOT I MADE THIS COMMENT OML...I'M AN 8TH GRADER NOW, AND I CAN PROUDLY SAY I ENDED UP CONVINCING HER TO LET US PLAY IT!!!
@sst4r_ddu5t YESSSS JESUSSSS🙏🙏
Another Cello here, this masterpiece was supposed to be on our list for our upcoming concert but our conductor got us playing some FCKASS Pink Panther bro I'm about to crash out
@realhumbug I PRAY FOR YOU🙏
Yes. We finally get a good part! I think Doug spata favors cellos in most music he writes in my personal opinion
Yes, almost every single song he writes starts with some random ostinato going in the upper strings for 4 bars, before the cellos come in with some random melody with way too many jumps
I'm cello. My teacher is a professional cellist, so we get a lot of songs with melody, (but he tries to even it out over all the sections. He's cool like that). So, in the same contest that we played this piece, we also had a piece where the violas had the melody a whole lot. Now a bit of info, Mr. J, gives us one piece at a time and waits till we've got the general idea down before giving us the next piece. We generally have about two to three pieces at a time. Well, since this was the hardest (the entire cello section are prodigies, so this is really easy stuff for us), he gave it to us first, and we spent a lot of time on it. The violas were getting used to having not much melody, until the next piece they had the melody basically through the whole piece. We came back to this and then realized that the basses had the melody more often than the violas. We still make fun of them. But lets be honest, Eli is just happy people finally stopped making fun of him for the time he got his finger stuck in the sound hole.
The fact that in my orchestra we could sight read this tells me a lot about your prodigy cellos, like you really things you are all that good?
For a beginning orchestra, yes. Now that we're more advanced, we're a the best in the state, since we score some of the highest out over several orchestras. This piece may have been under level for yours, which also tells me your orchestra is great as well.
@@lizzyhamilton7473 yes ours is pretty widely known, the jazz band also sometimes gets pulled out of school to play at baseball games and such so we do have a pretty good music program
Ooh that's really cool!
@@lizzyhamilton7473 yeah being part of both of orchestra and jazz band it’s opened up a lot of opportunities for me!
Played this is 6th grade, it’s still by far the best piece I’ve ever played, everything is perfectly balanced and sounds absolutely beautiful. I’m still in love with the melody. (Viola player)
Ah, 7th grade memories... makes me really nostalgic for something I can't have again.
Like I feel this weird feeling in my chest when I listen to it. I feel really sad and nostalgic for those days. I don't like this feeling but at the same time I'm letting myself do it. My god the nostalgia.
It’s very nostalgic for me too
7TH GARDE I AM PLAYING THING IS HS
7th as well😂😂😂😂
I really wish I had gotten to play this piece with my orchestra. Unfortunately we couldn’t and now I’m moving on to a more advanced orchestra. But this piece is so beautiful it almost moved me to tears, I hope someday I’ll still be able to play it and if not that, conduct it.
You guys are lucky. I didn't get to play this song! It only popped up in my recommendations list.
Same here, in hs rn, playing closer to 4s I think?

this is so nostalgic-
i remember some of my 8th grade friends from last year who just so happened to be in orchestra played this. they were first violin, viola, and cello respectively. i miss them :(
update: i just got the first violin's sheet music in orchestra! i once mentioned in passing to my music teacher that i liked this piece, but i only had the second violin piece and lost it for a period of time (i did recover it though!), and he gave it to us this year as our year-long song :)
same it makes me miss 8th grade
We played this for contest last year, and it was the last one we had before Covid. Even then it was my favorite song. Now every time I listen to it, I just wish with all my heart that I could back in time to the stage when I was at my Max skill playing this with my friends and having such a fun time doing it.
I did this 4th grade advanced orchestra it was good for 1st violins and was a fun piece!
i bet you did really well...[pause effect] did u sae 4th grade?
@Betty Oster these kids probably are Asian prodigies
whats funny is that that most of hte melody goes to the 2nds and violas! i find that interesting because most songs the 1sts get the melody.
@Maximilian Prince oh alrite.
This song is so addicting
Went to my 6th grade sisters concert after she was done playing the 8th graders played this song and now I’m addicted
I am only 1st grade but my teacher said that it is a must to play this song with my friends in the CCA
the cello is very expressive, beautifull piece!
Man it's been a while since somebody has commented on this video. Playing this in my orchestra class for a concert piece and it's absolutely just beautiful. Can't wait to be able to fully play this (we just got the piece, still practicing !)

Try Smartmusic! They have free sheet music
Wait….. second violin gets more melody than first violin?
funny story: my teavher printed this out, and in the top left corner it says our instrument names, but the first letter was cut off of each one. So my tracher said “Violins, you are now iolins, violas are now iolas, cellos are now ellos, and bass is now…”
