I just thought I'd mention this but Pat Conway was played by Rita Wilson which is Tom Hanks wife. This episode was her very first TV show role back in the early 70s.
Oh, yeah that's asking for trouble lol. So who are the ones that choose the ones that make Varsity at your daughters school? I think it was the Captains who decided at mine.
Yeah, there's no way it was ever done that way. They had coaches and assistants. They chose the teams, not the students. Ever. That scene had me in stitches, it was so off! And Greg and the boys were right. Pat was the best cheerleader.
@@mishaa7263My friends used Herbal Essence or Long & Silky shampoos (although I have vague memories of something that smelled like honey) and washed their hair every day. Pat really was the best out of the three. I have to say, though, none of them were "head cheerleader" good lol. Even Rita/Pat, perfectly energetic, became out of breath during her presentation. Then again, though I'm sure an experienced, even real-life cheer captain could have been cast, maybe not having an obvious winner served the plot better😂
Me too!!! lol! Crappy quotes like Alices, "my get up and go has got up and went", "pork chops and apple sauce" and "broken down barnacle barge" randomly pop into my head. Why couldn't it be something useful. I am a moron. lol!
In my honest opinion, Pat Conway was the BEST. Her movements were more controlled and precise. The other girls kind of seemed like they were just jumping around.
All three cheer routines were....very old fashioned!! Imagine these girls and judges reactions to the cheers from the movie, BRING IT ON!!!! They would all be amazed and shocked!!!🤤🤤🤤
Yeah it's become an industry. 3 of my nieces were in that "industry" I thank my lucky stars my 2 daughters had no interest. Talk about an annoying all day YAWN-fest. No offense intended!
I was a jr high and high school cheerleader in the 70's. We were nothing compared to cheerleaders now, but I know we had way more fun. We had a ball. I'm 61, and I still think about all the fun times I had . I wouldn't trade that to be as competitive as cheerleading is now.
Pat definitely had the best moves and, overall, cheering technique. (She lost points as a result of running out of breath and not having the best ending. All she yelled was "Yaaaaaaayy"). Jennifer had better moves than Marcia (Marcia simply skipped up and down), but Marcia had the better cheering technique (Jennifer sounded flat and unenthusiastic). Jennifer had the better ending. ("Who's gonna win, tell me, who's gonna win, yaaaaaaayy, BEARS!") In fact, Jennifer's ending was the best of all. But the winner was definitely Pat, followed by Marcia and then Jennifer.
I really don't know how two of those boys could have sat there and voted for anyone but Pat. Pat was clearly the best; you could even see it on the faces of Marcia and Jennifer when Pat was performing. It was like, "We're toast".
The cheerleader Pat became a famous actress today she was in a lot of other movies and TV shows. But when I googled her this was her first show she ever did. She was not famous yet but later on became very famous. I love this episode
Jennifer's routine was real flat. And Marcia messed up the routine twice, saying '...three, four, tell me who's got the score', but the correct verse was, '...three, four, tell me who's gonna score..', and then saying '...say it again, the bears. Say it again, the bears', when the correct verse is '...say it again, the bears. Who's gonna win? The bears.' Pat had the most enthusiasm and energy in her routine. She definitely deserved the win!
Pat Conway clearly was the best candidate. She moved and cheered in rhythm and a steady tempo. She was also the only one who could split kicks... decently.
If you watched how Greg collected the votes from the others, you would see that the black guy voted for Jennifer, the guy in blue voted for Marcia, and the guy in glasses voted for Pat.
It looks like it wasn't so much how well they jumped or danced or used the pom poms, it was not running out of breath! As an asthmatic I could feel their pain at running out of breath before getting all the words out. Marcia took losing with a lot of maturity. But if he'd picked Jennifer over her I don't think she would've lost so graciously. They cut it off before we saw Jennifer's reaction. But I think we all know what that was going to be.
I went to HS in the 70s, and the cheerleaders tried out in front of the entire school, not just a few boys. As for cheer captain, the cheer squad decided that among themselves and their coach.
Both Pat and Marcia would make great cheerleaders. I love Marcias voice better to be understood but i really felt Pat had just a little bit more enusiasm. It was a competition and pat was just a little stronger.
I think Pat actually was a cheerleader in her own life. She was not just acting. It was her specialty. The others were great but Pat was simply better.
Marcia always gets screwed. That's pretty much what the boss said when he fired her from the ice cream parlor because Jan worked "a little harder." lol.
Well, we don't really know that, do we? Maybe Jennifer gave out for him, and he still backstabbed her by voting for Pat! Now, THAT would command respect! 😄
My guess is at sküle, probably under the same tree where Jan and Cindy caught Greg smoking and where Peter punched Buddy Hinton. That seems to be a perennial hot spot for Brady activity. Of course, the shared bathroom sans toilet need not be completely ruled out; it still contained a bathroom sink, right? 😉
....this isn't even a contest....It's *PAT!* (0:55) ...spirited, engaged, enunciates well, cheerful... Marcia's low voice & '...who's really 'Gate...', lost some points (1:43) ...and, Jennifer is LETHARGIC! (2:21) ...Greg, you chose WELL, m'Boy...... (4:13) ....
Well actually it wasn't to pick the whole squad. All the girls were already cheerleaders. This was to pick the head cheerleader. It's a little confusing why they didn't all wear the same uniform but then they wouldn't have had the previous situation earlier in the episode when Jennifer wanted an opinion on the outfit she was going to wear at the tryouts. Apparently it was a part of who gets picked to try to impress with wardrobe along with the other qualifications. Honestly though Jennifer didn't put a lot into the tryout because she figured she had Greg's vote.
Well, even though the plot was merely so Greg would have a moral dilemma, it's arguably metaphorical of real-life choosing a "head cheerleader". Is it someone who performs the best, is the most popular, or offers "favors" to the ones voting?
It's merely doofy script-writing by middle aged men. A male student judging a cheering competition? Never happened except in "Brady World". Although Phil Dunphy would be fine doing that.
It was the 70s. A lot of high schools were "open concept". This included empowering students by allowing one or two of them to vote on administration-faculty committees (in some cases, even school boards). Many schools did not have weighted grading, meaning that a student who achieved a 4.0 average by taking easy classes would be valedictorian over a student with a 3.99 average who took difficult classes. Some schools did not even have grading, just "teacher evaluations". It was all kind of a joke.
What I think happened here is that Rita Wilson (Pat) was asked by the producers to do a simulated cheerleading performance. Based on what SHE did, Maureen McCormack and the actress portraying Jennifer were told to purposely tone down their performances to make it believable that Pat was the best? (Notice that Pat went first among the three girls).
This episode of the Brady Bunch is the first time I saw Rita Wilson as Pat Conway. Later, a couple of episodes of Happy Days and 1 episode of Bosom Buddies. Finally, Volunteers with her husband Tom Hanks.
