As a wheelchair user, I'm genuinely impressed by how accurate this is. I can tell she put ages into researching and designing this. Nice job!
That's nice to know, from someone who is mostly ignorant of the structure of a wheelchair 😊
She always does SO much research for videos like this! I always learn way more than just the core of the vid usually is :D
I agree!
As a wheelchair user this video means alot especially when there are not a lot of disabled dolls out there. I'm going to be making a doll that looks like me so they will need a wheelchair so this will be helpful. Thank you for being so inclusive. I hope you have a great day!

You're so sweet! Thank you so much. I really really needed to hear this🥰

Quick question, I checked the link she left but it only has the material listed in the pdf. I can’t find the patterns but I really wanted to make this.

As a spoonie with EDS who has to use a wheelchair sometimes? I'm not gonna lie..... I cried when I watched this..... SO often is our community forgotten and overlooked.... no one remembers us or thinks of us and they often try to pretend that we aren't here..... so.... as I'm laying here in bed, in far too much pain to get around today BECAUSE of my EDS..... service dog laying over my stomach..... I just wanted to say..... thank you SO much for remembering we are real...... thank you for acknowledging us as here..... you have no idea how much it means just to be..... seen by someone.....
Sponnie with EDS too! I don't use a wheelchair (yet, I'll certainly have to in the future) and this made me so happy! I can only wish for a doll with crutches / a cane in the future!! It's just so good to feel acknowledged and seen as you said it.
Fellow EDS haver here, and I agree, it feels so wonderful to see us physically disabled folks represented in art like this! Now I just want to see a doll with a cute decked out cane like mine :D
I dont have EDS or a disability but i know how it feels to be stuck in bed for a day or two in pain or exasghted i dont have it bad but i know how it sucks 😆😅. Sending positive thoughts your way ❤ ( i have pretty bad anxiety and a mood disorder and im constantly exasghted, but i know its no where near as bad as others)
As someone that doesn’t have any disability, i feel it’s extremely important to have your community talked about. I definitely wish I wasn’t as ignorant for so much of my life to what someone with a disability goes through. Thank you for sharing this, and i hope you and ur service doggy have a much better day with less pain tomorrow :) (also please please please inform me if i used any insensitive language or wording in this, i dont want to upset anyone)
Spoonie with a cane here. Hello! (Also hello to service doggo who is being a good service doggo & helping!) You're real, & I believe in you!
when I was little my mom used a wheelchair. One of my happiest childhood memories was pushing my mom around at the zoo, I was ecstatic that she was finally able to go with us. She has since passed away, but wheelchairs still remind me of how happy I was to be with my mom. This video reminded me of that, and if I'm ever able to make dolls in the future this is definitely going to be included in my character designs!
that's so sweet😞

I love how these projects are made mostly of common household "trash" not only to cut costs, but it is a great way to reuse things you were going to discard anyway! Being crafty doesn't mean you have to always use expensive materials to get something special!
Using common items makes it more accessible too.
I just want an alternative to the soda can - you get money for recycling it in my country, so I grew up with the mindset of never breaking them and that they're usefull "trash", so it hurts my heart to slice into one x'D
@@xXLolomusXx you can make money off of recycling it? where do u live and how can i teleport there?
@@lilenwasnothere6867 Yes, in Denmark! (Other scandinavian countries have it too) But when you buy something drinkable in a bottle (like plastic, glas and sodacans), you pay a "recycle fee", and you get that back when you put it in a recycle machine. It's not a lot, but if you collect, it can actually be an alright amount of money. Some people don't care about it, so in Copenhagen you can place your bottle on a spot made on the trashcans, so you can give the bottle to someone else who wants to recycle it - as a kid, it's a great way to get money xD
I'm so glad you posted the link for free, when you could've listed the instructions on your etsy instead, aaaaa thank you, we love :') ♡♡♡♡

Right. Any other person would make a big deal out of it and be like "so today im making this AFRICAN AMERICAN DISABLED DOLL!!!" but Kathrine just does it casually bc she knows they're normal ppl not to be used for woke points. We stan
And nonbinary dolls aswell! And also technically an ftm doll!
I mean, they're the same as making any white person/anyone who looks like you
No point in making a big deal, a black person is a person, a disabled person is a person but it's not really meant to be a big thing, nor should it be turned into some way to market or show off how inclusive you are, just another day of doll customizing.

I’m not a doll customizer but I kinda wanna make this for toy photography! I’m really happy Catherine posted the link for the PDF’s for free instead of her Etsy, it’s not that big a thing but it’s so kind of her!
I watch all of her content no matter what😂😂 I am a simple woman, she uploads I watch
I don't even have a doll, but why not? It looks pretty fun
I honestly admire Katherine for how much detail, time and energy she puts into each of her videos, it shows how much she cares about her audience and I love it 🥰
Im so happy this is out now, I’ve been looking forward to another of your videos ever since the last came out, you‘re the one youtuber I don’t think I could ever get bored off, because you’re so creative and always find new ways to do things, and all your designs are so complex and different. You also explain things really clearly so that the people you inspire are more likely to actually try stuff like this 😊😊
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am very happy and flattered to hear it. :) Thanks for watching!!
Most other youtubers that I watch don’t go into even a third of the detail that Katherine does. I’m not a doll customizer but I have gotten extremely into toy photography because of her beautiful shots and descriptions, plus Nerdecrafter. I’m definitely making this and using this for a doll I have that doesn’t have one of her legs, especially because I’ve wanted to do a photo shoot for her for a while but haven’t been able to find a natural looking way to pose or situate her, so this is definitely going to help out a lot!! Thank you so much Katherine! Seriously, she’s one of the best RUclipsrs I have ever watched, and it’s difficult not to love her!! She’s respective of other’s cultures and styles, inclusive and kind to people who are often left out, ignored or despised, creative and talented, god leveled patient, and incredibly sweet and funny! Thank you, again, truly thank you. Kathrine, you are a truly amazing person and I and my mom always look forward to your videos as they’re super fun, entertaining, and incredible to watch. My mom loves you and your work and I love getting to make her happy, and watching your videos is a great way to relieve stress and regain hope for humanity .and happiness, so it’s a win win! I struggle a lot with autism but watching you helps a lot with anxiety and helps me avoid a mental breakdown. It’s a bit weird, but I feel like your videos help more than you or anyone thinks, and, I’ve said this a lot, but thank you, seriously.
@@Dollightful Your artwork skills are true magnificent, I'm sorry Wendy wendigo got taken down from youtube & I know how much you truly love her.

A few ideas, if I may:
- Instead of wrapping thread around the wheels, you could use 3D fabric paint to give it the rubbery texture of tires
- You could use buttons for the caster wheels so you don't have to bother with trying to cut thick cardboard into very small round shapes
- Oven-hardening clay (like Sculpey or Fimo) can be used for the large wheels. To get them nice and even, cookie cutters are your best friend!
As a final note:
Please keep in mind that the design of this wheelchair (while very cute) is not really meant for self-propelling, despite the handrails. A wheelchair for an independent disabled character who self-propels, would look more like the simple design in terms of overall shape.
A few common elements of self-propel wheelchairs:
- very low backrest
- no or very minimal armrests (those get in the way when you want to self-propel)
- either no, or very low (or extendable) handles in the back. If they go up high, you'll hurt your shoulders while self-propelling
- knees would be at roughly a 90° angle (I understand that this may look a bit odd with the proportions of monster high dolls)
- the character overall would sit very upright
Of course such a design can be decorated at will too. Fancy wheels and stickers and all that!
I hope this helps!
I kept thinking about this as well! But I do think a lot of wheelchair users do wind up using wheelchair like this anyway, since better ones are generally very unaffordable.
@@rumpeltyltskyn I guess that depends on where you're from. With the american healthcare system you're probably right xD
@@Aghul Very true, I’m definitely coming from an American perspective!
yep this was what thinking the wheelchair in the video is more like a hospital one and many wheelchairs have a smaller foot rest so the feet don't move a round
Do you know the name or any brands for the kind of wheelchair that's best for peeps to use on their own ? I want to get reference pictures and make sure I'm looking at the right one
I said this last video and I'll say it again, THANK YOU. As a wheelchair user myself, its sometimes hard to believe I can be as pretty and elegant as other kawaii fashion wearers. Your last video and this one help push that disabilities don't make someone any less able to wear a cute fashion and look just as amazing as others. Representation is important and that's exactly what you're doing for the community. Thank you
I’m not a wheelchair user, but I do have autism, and trying to believe I can be ‘normal’ like others is nearly impossible, but Kathrine’s videos help a lot, like a lot A LOT. She’s so kind, sweet, inclusive, respective, patient, creative, and inspiring! I seriously love how much she cares for others and includes different types of cultures, styles, and so many other things. Disabilities don’t make someone any less of a person than someone without disabilities, it just means that they are more unique, different, and(as i like to put it)more colorful than others.
As to looking cute in a chair. My sister has been in one sence birth. I happen to love sewing. So for her graduation I sewed her dress. To keep fabirc out of her wheels we went with a mermaid dress. She loves purple and yellow. So I made a purole star covered mermaid dress with gold for the bottom half. She loved it and got so many complaments. You can totally look adorable or cute or what ever you want to look like. The only thing to think of is the wheels and even then there are ways around them.
@@rayhatter8315 that is so cute, wholesome, and incredible! Nice job making your sister feel beautiful! You’re a good person, thank you.
Thank you.
@@rayhatter8315 of course! People like you are the reason why I still have hope for humanity. That might sound a bit weird, but you truly are a good person and you will do great things, whether you know it or not. Just a simple act like making your sister a mermaid dress was probably a small thing for you, but a major thing for her. It probably helped her feel more like her classmates then she ever has, and it’s thanks to you. Again, you are such a good person and I hope you never stop doing good things, big and small.

This makes me so happy as a disabled person!! You did a really incredible job, and I love how you decorated it, seeing as most disabled people choose to decorate their chairs in some way or another (mine is black and red). As much as you're up for hearing it, I'd love to offer a little bit of commentary about the history of wheelchairs, with a small critique on the physical design of yours.
The "standard wheelchair" was originally designed to be used by caregivers and nurses/doctors, which is why they have larger seat buckets (to be able to use their hands to help people in and out of the chair), have push handles (for the obvious reason), arm rests/sides of the seat (to hold the disabled person still), are larger so that almost anybody who might need a wheelchair in a hospital environment fits (which actually makes them borderline unusable by disabled people in cramped environments like store isles or buses), and have foot rests that extend substantially in front of the chair (that catch on and hit things frequently, regardless of who is in charge of the chair, but by design are for people with short term leg injuries who need to keep a leg/foot raised, and, make it easier for caregivers, nurses, and doctors, to scoop their arm under a persons legs to help them in/out of the chair).
In contrast, when wheelchairs are designed for disabled people to gain independence they are substantially lighter (which is kinda impossible to translate for a doll chair, but is worth noting), usually don't have arm rests (because they get in the way of using your push rims! and people who self propel can actually injure their shoulders from arm rests making them have to bend their arms awkwardly around the arm rests), have a seat bucket that fits snuggly to the exact length of the widest part of your butt while sitting and the exact length of your thighs while sitting (wiggle room can cause pressure sores, friction burns, and also make a chair harder to self propel), generally keep your legs bent closer to your body (between 80 to 100 degrees), with shorter back rests (which give the shoulders the proper amount of room to self propel, and, are actually more supportive of the spine in most cases), and either don't have push handles at all, or have fold away handles (for the same reason tall back rests can restrict movement of shoulders, so can push handles, and, many disabled people dislike the lack of independence inherent to having a chair that //anybody// could decide to grab and push). This is all subject to the diversity inherent in disability - some disabled folks can't always self propel, or can't can't self propel at all, and therefore need push handles; some need the extra support of having sides to their seat bucket; some need taller back rests which can support people who have unstable or injured thoracic and cervical spines; etc.
So explicitly, if you're making a chair designed for someone who generally self propels, it //usually// wouldn't have arm rests, push handles, or an obtuse angle for the leg bend, and would probably be a little thinner. However! Tons of disabled folks have, need, and gain their independence from having caretakers who can do things like push their chair some or all of the time! So. Anyways. Maybe this is all new information, or all old information, but I thought that it would be useful information for at least one person who reads this.
All in all, you did a phenomenal job, and continue to be one of the most intentionally and explicitly inclusive youtubers and creators that I follow. Thank you!!

I could be wrong, but I think the Korean word for the part translates more closely to "push ring" than handrim, which is why Katherine used that term
they're also known as push rims afaik
@@geenyx9314 Yep push rims is also correct
Even without the huge inclusivity wins in this video, this is probably one of the best tutorials I've seen on RUclips?
Clear, thorough instructions. Beautiful pacing that works for both entertainment or following along. An actual personality behind the work, and one that doesn't interfere with understandability. Fingers that don't get in the way, and plenty of lingering "here's what it should look like" shots. As a crafter, this is like a once-in-a-lifetime unicorn of a RUclips tutorial. (And I don't even KNOW anyone who uses a wheelchair. I can only imagine how thankful I would be if this gorgeous piece of instruction was ALSO personally representative!)

I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This ruclips.net/user/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

As someone who doesn't use or even think about wheelchairs that often, I can't say how amazed I am that Dollightful did this
Sometimes, it's hard not to stare or think of why that person is in a wheelchair, and want to ask questions
But Dollightful is so chill about it! It's so nice! My favorite type of diveresty, in any form, is when they don't make a big deal of it and go, "look! Look what we did!" The fact that she just made a character and, "Oh yeah, she also happens to have a wheelchair" is incredible, and a nice way to remind ourselves that they're still people. Anyone who has a disability of any kind shouldn't be labeled by it. They're still a person! They just happen to be different in some way
To anyone who has any mobility problems, or needs a wheelchair, sending lots of love!! ❤❤❤❤❤

your comment at the end about how fragile the wheelchair is got me wondering if you could substitute the cardboard for wood or similarly sturdy materials? the tricky bit would be figuring out how to do the curved tubes and such but the base pattern seems like it could work with some tweaking
Another commenter suggested something like fimo, which could work well (you'd have to make sure the spokes and hub were all in place before you baked it though)
I really respect that you're not treating this like some kind of PR stunt to prove you're inclusive and diverse- you're just naturally like that. I just spent 26 minutes watching someone make a doll wheelchair. And I was captivated the whole time. I don’t know how she does it. I spent the whole time thinking “how on earth did she even start coming up w/ how to make this... HOW DOES SHE DO IT!”
This video genuinely makes me so happy! Just curious if you had thought about other mobility aids, canes, crutches, walkers, etc. You clearly did your research and spent so much time on this video.
All I can say is WOW. This is really comprehensive and amazing. And the fact that you were thoughtful enough to make an easy and advanced version is great. As somebody with a mobility aid it's super nice to see this! Excellent work!
I'm making a custom doll of my niece for her next birthday and the fact that now I'll be able to make a matching wheelchair for the doll just like the one she uses is making me tear up. Thank you so much for not putting either of these tutorials behind a paywall. Every kid deserves a toy that looks just like them.
I love how this channel's comments are always so nice and supportive !!! It always melts my heart to read other people's stories and opinions ❤. So glad to be part of this community 😍!!!
I love the idea of this. My brother is mentally disabled and physically disabled
It looks so cute! I can’t wait to make one myself! 💖💖💖
it's so cool that Katherine took the time to make two versions of this project, to use easily accessible materials, and to provide the free patterns. You can tell it was important to her that every single person have the opportunity to make one of these! She could have 3-D printed it, found an expensive model from a toy store, or used expensive materials to make her version, but instead she gave us this and that's just awesome.
I’m so glad to have a tutorial for when I start making a wheelchair I’ve been planning! I think I’ll end up combining and modifying both designs so it’ll be more sturdy and accurate to a self propelling wheel chair
you really are the best! This is the kind of things we need to have more of!
dollightful struggling to say “rear wheel” for 25 min straight

Dollightful out here being an amazing artist, doll customizer, AND engineer! We love to see it!
I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user and I started getting in to doll repaints after finding your videos a few years ago. I'm so SO happy you've made wheelchairs. Thank you so much ❣️
Liked and commented before even watching cuz I’m sure I’ll end up loving it.
And I was totally right!
This is so cool!! I've never seen this kind of tutorial and you've done such a great job!
My son needs to use a wheelchair, this video is amazing. Words cannot describe how much this means to me xxxxxx
I just want to say I have soooo much more respect for you now. Both patterns are fully fleshed out patterns that required so much work, probably more work than most of your purchasable clothes patterns and yet you made them both free to download, made full RUclips videos of instructions, and even made 2 patterns depending on your crafting comfort level. I love this and I’ll be making mine soon!!💖💖💖💖💖💖
Crafters tip: When wrapping something like the wheels where its a tight fit and its hard to get the thread to go through, I like to take the extra step and wrap my thread on a small stick. My personal favorite tool is the bobby pin, so the thread is held in place and doesn't rotate. This trick helps with threading the thread through those gaps while making sure it doesn't get tangled!
Heads up, that's a triangular prism, not rectangular! It's clear in the video, but in case it's written as instructions or something. :)
you’re such a good communicator every part of the instructions are so clear
As a wheelchair user this video means the world to me. I’ve been wanting to make a mini me for so long and it didn’t feel right without a doll wheelchair! They’re expensive, plain with few options when made by doll companies. Now I can make one that looks exactly like mine (or cooler) you’re so dedicated and amazing no matter what you’re making ❤️
Neat-o! I’m glad there’s more variety for the community!
when I was little I always wanted a doll wheelchair. I made do with a giant shell thing, but it wasn't ideal. (the back didn't stay up without support particularly since the shell was meant to close) I would use it for "injured" dolls as well as a mermaid or two with the fin part of their tail lost or detached. I had one mermaid doll that I'd just pretend that her articulated tail (with the fin missing) was just a long tight skirt, and I'd ideally have her in a wheelchair.
Also remember having a little barbie figure that was molded sitting down. She was so pretty and I wanted to play with her, but it bothered me that she couldn't be standing. Eventually I figured out I could just say her "seat" was an electric scooter/wheelchair and that she was just disabled. Which solved the problem. Now it was completely normal for her to be sitting down and shorter than the other toys in the line up. It never came up in any of the pretend games I played with her, but she was used as a disabled character whenever I used her. Where other dolls got bounced along to mock walking, she got slid to mock rolling on wheels.
I am CRYING about this, the amount of thought and effort put into this chair is ASTOUNDING I love it so so so so much. I'm a wheelchair user myself, and I feel so SEEN in this video, I love how personalized and fit to the doll's aesthetic it is!!! It's so positive and true to life!! It makes me want to actually get around to dedicating MY wheelchair finally, as well as making a punk version of this chair so I can wrap tiny little spikes around the handles!! For anyone who wants to bring more disabled representation into their art, THIS is an absolutely STUNNING example of how you do it!!
Disabled people are PEOPLE and treating mobility aids like anything else a person would use on a regular basis as part of their day-to-day life is the perfect approach!! If a character aestheticizes everything they use they'll do the same thing to their mobility aids! If a character is minimalist and utilitarian in their life their medical equipment will follow suit! I'm crying such real happy tears about this, the casual inclusion is SO HUMANIZING and SO WONDERFUL!!! We need MORE stuff like this all over, art is a reflection of life, and seeing disabled people realistically portrayed in art is vitally important to changing society's perception of disabled people, and MAKING DISABLED PEOPLE FEEL NORMAL AND SEEN!!!
Its absolutely lovely to read through the comments of this vid & Charley's video seeing what a positive impact its had on wheelchair users. I'm not physically disabled myself, but it's great to see dolls that represent people with physical disabilities. Thanks to the instructions + the wheelchair vids, hopefully we should see more wheelchair using dolls. It's great how dollightful really makes an effort to be inclusive with her creations
Hi, is it possible you can make a deaf/hard of hearing doll ooak doll for your collection? I was born with a mild hearing loss and the aren't many dolls that show that diversity. I'd really enjoy it if you did!
It would be quite easy to make hearing aids or cochlear implants for dolls! :D a problem is always doll hands being not articulated for signing...
I think there is a lesser known Marvel superhero who has a bionic ear. He was invented to convince a little boy with a cochlear implant to wear his hearing aids. Professor X and Daredevil aren't the only handicapable heroes!
@@stigyanblue1442I know this is an old comment, but handicapable is a kinda rubbish term. disabled is the generally accepted term :)
Ah! This wheelchair is so cute! I'm so glad somebody made something like this! The editing of this video is great too! X3
I gotta say im not one to just down and listen to a video of instructions but this got my attention. Thanks for making instructions less boring to listen to.
So cool!!! As a disabled person, seeing stuff like this makes me so happy! And the fact the pdf is free is even cooler! Thank you so much 💜
Dollightful: calls her wheels wonky
me: Looks like I need to get a new pair of glasses because I can't see anything wrong with them
Amazing work btw
I’ve already made 5 and making a 6 😓😓😓 I- my whole family is helping 😝
Wow
Ok but like i love that you reminded people to take breaks and do this in multiple sittings🥺 i feel like people can sometimes forget these are edited videos and are done are SEVERAL days. Also sometimes people just need an instructed break during crafts because they work that way!
i don't customize, don't have the patience for it, but every video you have on making the dolls, and their accessories, makes me happy. I love when makers/customizers are as informative about the process and go slow enough to where the video can be used as a tutorial (even if it's not meant to be xP)
I also enjoy the fact how diverse your doll characters are without feeling the need to point it out. the show/don't tell method of inclusivity feels much more natural and normalized, and the dolls shine with personality
I can't imagine how much time it took to figure all of this out, but it looks awesome!
“Noodle arms”
*also made an entire years worth of dragons out of wire popsicle sticks and clay*
Oh my gosh thanks for making this! As a disabled teenager I always love to see things like this
I wanted to mention that this isn't only friendly to wheelchair users but the instructions were clear and straightforward enough to follow easily and not get tired with my autism as well :))
