How how does the pan need to be to melt, and what would drivina car at that temp do to everything else in the engine? What was the culprit?

My theory is they had low coolant resulting from a coolant leak or the wrong coolant all-together. The oil heated up since the coolant wasn't cooling and got hot enough to melt the pan. Once the engine gets hot enough and there is no oil the coolant left will escape as white smoke either through the head gasket or a cracked block.
