As long as you replace the g13 every 12 months so anything magnesium or aluminium alloy doesn't corrode away. The bags is to keep levels of silica up in the coolant to reduce corrosion and it will drop without it
Dropping knowledge on these fools
Facts
Then try using a pre-mixed G12 Evo. It solves the radiator and intercooler issue.
never seen that before wow
@DarthRevan too much trouble to do a bit of research then.

These bags prevent calcification of the sensors in the cooling system and prevent rusting.
It's no use once your cooling system is blocked with silica & you have to replace the heater matrix & radiator.
Until they break and fill your heater matrix up with silica which then stops you gettin any heat thru your heater... Bad Bad idea by. VW

From a long-time mechanic. You do NOT remove this bag.
Do it, talking from experience from both 2016 RS3 8v and 2015 S3 8v. These have caused over $1200 in needing new heater matrix’s. Cars serviced religiously and highly cared for but these bags burst and eventually find their way to through the coolant to the heater matrix/heat exchanger clogging it and making your A/C blow only cold air. Pretty common problem on these cars.
Finally someone who knows! 🎉
1200 for a heater matrix?😅
@@Roger-k1w Yes 2 heater matrix’s equalling $1,200 NZD / equivalent $750 USD. Each OEM heat exchanger being $600 NZD / 370 USD.
That’s just parts no labour, I did them both myself and it’s a dog of a job.
Speaking as a certified VW technician.. please do not remove this bag. It’s there for a reason and literally have never had issue with these bags or expansion tanks. Ever.
I've seen them burst @ work. Complete handling. Blocks up heater matrix behind dash & the radiator. I heard that VW actually made a specialised machine to flush the cooling system after they burst
maybe you have never had a problem with dsg gearboxes?
In welchem Werk bist du tätig?
Eigentlich müsste doch ausgerechnet dir dieses Problem bekannt sein 🤔
This bag is a nuisance it causes engine damage
Maybe replace the bags periodically?
Auto manufacturers have to comply with government's regulations, its called planned obsolescence. 😂 I advise to remove anything emissions related and tune your car, keep up your maintenance and clean your intake ports at 200k km. Keep an eye on your timing chain tensioner, replace all timing parts when needed. Your engine will last a million miles.
I did all that on my 1.9 TDI (BLS) at 300,000. It was running rough, and emissions parts were failing. I did a full delete, including the EGR, and she runs great now. Runs like new, and sounds like a cummins with the mad whistle and choo

They don't all come out easily. Sometimes easier to buy a new expansion vessel
The coolant bottle is now a service item iv done a good few. With it out it rusts the parts in the engine. It is cheap at about 35 euro so I'd replace every few years.

Man that must be a long oil change interval or a really short coolant change interval lol
@Tim E maybe he's just changing out the overflow?
No need to change g12 or g13 coolant that often.
If the words 'Mit Silikat' (with silica) printed on your coolant expansion tank, it came with this bag inside.

@@socratestanculescu He means the actual coolant header tank, not the bottle that coolant comes in.
I don't see such an item in my coolant top up tank. And the coolant is meant to have chemical inhibitors to prevent corrosion and scale. And my tiguan is only from 2018 and only done 35,000km's though I had to replace the water pump due to a bad bearing which was not caused by corrosion.
its a bag to keep the moisture out
But if that bag burst open it's not going to be a good day for the owner of the car
No it’s not… it’s there to help keep cooling system free from corrosion. They burst and block heater matrix… happened to my Golf but fortunately was under warranty.
It is a silica bag, like what you get with new shoes. Supposed to make the coolant last longer.
When this bag goes, it clogs up the heater matrix. No hot air from the blowers! I had to remove the bottom half of the dash to replace it 😢 pain in the arse
Селикагель, зря вытащил, влагу убирает из системы, чтобы капли росы не висели в бачке и металлические элементы не ржавели в системе охлаждения.
That's what I suspect clogged my radiator needed a new water pump/thermostat assembly as well
So what is the reason for removing it? What benefits?
It’s meant to make coolant last longer, but over time it breaks causing a lot of damage this little bag blocked my heater matrix and took out my water pump, when vw supply you with a new coolant tank it does not come with a bag and you cannot buy them.
I’ve made a video about this with my golf r on the channel and I’ve seen soooo many vw’s broke because of this it’s just easier to take it out first as last
Coolant is coolant you cannot aid it
@@jamesr50 can you link that video or at least a title of that video so I can watch it? 👍
Yes good idea to remove that. When that thing breaks you Will Have some serious problems
If that bag was either 'keepable' or 'required to be removed' it would shure-as-hell be mentioned in the VAG Manual to either; "buy a new one every service" £$£$$£; or "remove it during delivery inspection".
I saw what mess it makes on another RUclips coolant issue yesterday.
What are these "many issues" that can be caused by the silica bag?
It can rip and the beads stop the coolant flowing causing the engine to overheat.
Si remueves eso tienes que cambiar el autocongelante
What is it and why is it there in the first place????
It’s to make the coolant last longer but over time the bag breaks and all the silica inside block your heater matrix, the heater matrix is expensive to replace
It's basically a silicate packet,so that VW can claim long life for who knows how long the coolant can last. As far as I know only VW and Mercedes Benz used such packets. Who came up with such ideas is beyond me. One doesn't see Asian cars with such designs.
Too much silicate content in the cooling system will cause the seals in the water pump to fail prematurely because it's abrasive.
That bag burst on my mk7 gtd, causing my pump and secondary auxiliary pump to fail
This is a known issue since Mk7 came out in 2012.. still true today to remove if your car has it obviously..
If it’s a 2012 wouldn’t it be a mk6? Or is that US only ?
Reminds us of polo tube capacitor on the Mk2 Golf
@@adamriale9065 indeed, if I am not mistaken, Mk7 only came out in USA in 2015. There's always a delay
Its not the bag that causes the issue. Its left over casting sand from when the blocks are made
@@petemechanic8249 The bags are known to burst, especially if the engine overheats for some reason.
Why can't I see this bag inside the reservoir? It's G13 for sure. I'm thinking of replacing the whole bottle as I don't want to deal with replacing the heater matrix, radiator or waterpump again
Too late, our one in the B8 Passat burst causing £1500 worth of damage. New expansion tank new heater matrix and 6 coolant flushes later all is well again.

Reading the comments is full of mixed opinions, but me personally i dont see the point of this so called silica bag. Some r saying it prevents corrosion??? So then whats the bloody point of using coolant in your cooling system.. isnt the purpose of coolant to prevent rust, corrosion and avoid the water to not freeze or boil over?? As a mechanic that works on pretty much any vehicle, ive never seen this in modern german cars that ive worked on.
You'd think VW engineers would have found a better way than installing teabags that are known to burst leading to expensive repairs. Oh wait, they only burst after the warranty period expires. Good German engineering lol.
Stf !
Only diesels are having the issue, afaik
And they only do this so they can use cheaper coolant in the assembly.

Hi! Why did they put it in at the factory? What is the purpose of the silicone bag?
it is used to protect against corrosion
Because of extending timing belt, you need this bag to keep silicate at right level to protect water circuit against corrosion (galavanic and oxydation). You have ionic exchange in the lifetime with water, aluminium and iron. When timing belt service was 5 years, no problem. Now it's different.
@@tylerdurden223 Why do they they tie this to the timing belt service interval rather than just having a 5 year coolant service?
