Scotty Kilmer Hi sir hope everything is going well with you. I have 2010 Toyota highlander, 2.7 engine but can't find the PCV valve if you can help me out with . Thank you
Scotty, I have a 2007 Pontiac Torrent that burns a lot of oil, so I decided to replace the PCV valve, but on this vehicle, the PCV valve doesn't just pull out, there is some kind of bracket holding it in. I've seen some videos on youtube where the bracket holding the pcv is actually riveted to the valve cover. Does that mean that these pcv valves aren't meant to be replaced?
Daaaaaang Scotty! My 1994 Silverado started burning oil. I love this truck, bought it new and have babied this thing. I really enjoy your videos. We are about the same age. I'm 66. I've been a gear head since before I started driving. I never was a mechanic by trade but worked in Dealerships in the sales end. People ask me if I am a mechanic and I tell them, no but I'm a decent parts changer and have some common sense. As badly as I don't want to say anything that can be read as profiling, I think that the people in my generation were and still are much more in tune with their car. This sin't everyone, by a long shot. I tell people that when I started driving, I bought my own car, paid my own insurance and had the money by the time I was 16. Naturally that is next to impossible today but my point is this. My first car was a 1953,. It had a 6 volt electric system, no seat belts, an AM tube type radio that took 5 minutes to warm up. It had vacuum wipers. I won't try and explain vacuum to them but just that the more you pushed on the gas, the less they worked. It had a three speed transmission on the column with overdrive. It didn't have power steering or disk brakes or power anything. We had to learn to drive, not just point. Almost all highways were 2 lane. You were forced to pay attention because you knew it was serious stuff. To get a license you had to do all the things you do today, plus know how to give hand signals. My second car was a 62 Nova. It was 5 years old and I was a senior in high school. It didn't have seat belts either, same radio. My point is this. We learned how to keep cars running because our parents were raised in the depression and feared it happening again. Cars were a lot simpler back then, but even today, if people take a personal interest in their car and learn the things that they can do themselves, it can save a lot of money. My dad owned a sling of service stations and taught me two things about cars. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but little problems turn into really big ones. You have to have your car, so when something needs to be done, know what is important, but keep it maintained. It is always cheaper to keep a car running than to get one running. Sorry for rambling.
Scotty, you are the only one I can go to and find an answer right away. I went through 3 videos before this. You explained exactly what is happening. Thank you so much.
Thanks Scotty. Bought an 03 HondaElement that wasn't maintained well. Was burning oil. I changed PCV valve that was very dirty. Problem solved. Love your videos.
Hey Scotty! Thank you for this video. I was worried about my car burning oil and thanks to you I inspected my Hyundai Santro's engine and located the PCV valve. It was all clogged. I cleaned it up myself and I was still able to hear the noise it makes which proved that it was working. Once I placed it back and did an oil change. Its been ten days and my car hasn't lost oil yet. I have ordered a new replacement and will change it once its received. You just saved me a fortune too.
Troll True on my old Pontiac 301 engine, we had an oil breather tube that would vent into the carburetor cover. At the end of That oil breather tube, it had a breather filter that we would change or clean every other oil change or so.
You are literally my hero. Thank you for what you do. I’m not sure I can figure my issue out on my own but I’m watching whatever videos of yours I can find but I feel I’m never going to figure it out and I don’t have the money to be wrong. Had an oil change 2 weeks ago, car started sounding like it needed one today. It’s low on oil and now I have smoke under the hood. From the back side of the engine best I can tell.
@@pazuzu810 Replaced the valve cover seals and it stopped smoking under the hood. Must have been spitting out oil onto the rear manifold. Manifold went and it was too costly to repair such an old car so I junked it. I’ve wondered in the oil contributed to it breaking.
I get oil burning type smell only when I start my car in the morning. There's no smoke, just smell while starting and then it disappears. Will this help?
I got an 1976 F100 6 cyl a long time ago. It was running bad and had no power. The PCV valve in the top of the valve cover and the entire hose from it to the intake was clogged with oil deposits. I cleaned the valve (I was on the road) and used a stick to remove the clogged gunk from the pipe. It ran much better and got me home. I had a 1966 Ford Falcon that quit running in the middle of nowhere. After checking a few things I knew I wasn't getting fire to the plugs. I popped off the distributor cap and the very end of the metal on the rotor cap was gone, broke clean off! From the rivet to the center (coil wire contact) was fine but there wasn't anything on the end to send the spark to the distributor ends of the plug wires. Luckily my dad taught me to ALWAYS put the old tune-up parts in the trunk when I did a tune-up, that saved the day! I put the old rotor cap on and went on my way! Saved me a tow truck call, especially since cellphones hadn't been invented yet.
Thanks it helps me I got 2013 toyota venza & I was adding oil every other day when I changed PCV valve & did new oil change it did stopped no more leak or burning
PCV valves are often overlooked. myn on my honda civic is hidden under the intake manifold. when i finally replaced the pcv it stopped burning oil. good tip
+Mark N I found out the one on my Focus is also under the IM. Plus some of the bolts are hidden. And the hose is usually toast. I'm still working up the courage to undertake it.
Love you, Scotty. My friend who helps me out with my vehicle was getting sick of me saying Scotty said this... Scotty said that... BUT now he listens too! I just sent him this video... 😎
Seasoned mechanics years ago would look immediately to replacing the pcv in the tune-up process. Thanks for the important info. A small inexpensive item change like this can save a costly engine repair later.
I have a 2006 Honda Element Ex AWD. I purchased it 11 months ago and had my mechanic check it over and he said it was in great shape, plus I have every maintenance record since day one and it's had excellent care. I noticed today that it was a quart low after driving only 1200 miles, and I haven't seen anything leaking or smoking. So I went to Honda today to purchase an OEM pcv valve for $41.00 and will install. I pray it's the solution. Thanks Scotty, you're the best 😁
@@buzrash I just got it all changed and the old pcv was plugged up. I'm sure after driving for a little while I will see a big positive change. Sure is great to have Scotty Kilmer helping with all the great advice👍
Thanks Scotty, I did this a while ago and my car is still burning oil like water. Have to top off every 300 - 400 miles. But still running great with engine light on for catalyst converter.
@IT'SME. It may be the badge on your engine cover that caused the failure.😀. Seriously though, I knew one family that had 2 newer Cobalts. Both had major engine trouble within 6 months of each other. Total failure of hard parts like pistons, etc.
on my 2001 maxima, I changed my PVC valve and PVC hose for the first time in its 20 years history. I also switched to 10w30 high mileage from 5w30 high mileage (owners manual says 10-30 or10-40 can be used in my climate) I also added AT-205 Re-seal for the rear main seal leak. I also use 1 qt of oil stabilizer in place of 1 qt of oil. now its not burning as much oil or leaking as much. cheers
love your positive attitude and educational videos. Thanks for taking the time to edit them the way you do. Notifications are on brother! Thanks for all your help!
Just a note.. The PCV on the Honda Civic(EG series) are made of plastic, and you can't unscrew them. You have to pull it out with clamps. And when you do, it will most likely BREAK into pieces. I have no idea why they made out of plastic.. So far I replaced mine twice and both times they broken into pieces.
i changed them on my civics... none broke. it helps if you spray some wd40 or other lubricant on the ring of the valve prior to pulling it out. a lil dab of the same product on the new pcv should help installing n removing in the future. beck n arnley are sturdier.
I am not a mechanic but by watching Scotty I have learned how to keep my car in tip-top shape and avoid mechanics that are out there just ripping people off 🥳🎉🎈🎊🙏🏼!
I know exactly what you did and said in this video but it was refreshing to see someone make a valid video that would help others. No nonsense and simple here is the part, what it does, do this to make it right. Kudos sir I will check out other videos you post. I get oil burning type smell only when I start my car in the morning. There's no smoke, just smell while starting and then it disappears. Will this help?
I know this video is approaching five years old but it surely helped me today because for years I always thought this valve was the device that sat down in my valve cover gasket. My old car has been burning oil for quite some time. Perhaps this simple and cheap fix has been the culprit all along (because I was only changing the top piece that rattles). Thanks 😎👍
You can test if it is a PCV valve. Take off the oil cap and see if its stil burning oil. If the PCV valve is stuck closed or clogged now you are venting the pressure into the atmosphere.
TheReapersSon haha, thanks! I love Honda! Literally, Top of my list is NSX. Been saving all my pennies and don't care that is old! :D Just waiting for the right one to appear!!!
I love your videos. You have inspired me. I even got a 1997 ford f150 and fixed it up a lot.I checked for head gasket leaks and none. also it runs very strong making me think there are no valves or piston leaks. I juts found out that there is a problem with the oil. it seems to be disappearing. I am pretty shur i replaced the pcv valve. there is no to little smoke if any coming from the tail pipe. I also pulled the pcv valve out and when running it i put my finger over the end and the extremely large amount of vacuum sucked it to the top easily. Is there anything else that can cause the oil to disappear because i don't see any leaks on the drive way. I don't drive much but want a dependable car. Thank you so much. You saved my mom 900+ because of you helping me to help her fix the catalytic converter using lacquer thinner < you are awesome please never stop revving your engines>
Check for oil pan or a rear main seal leak. The 302 bronco i have, thats mainly wear it leaks from. If its leaking from either of those 2, the pan and bottom of transmission near where it mates to the engine will most likely have very fresh oil residue, And you're gonna have to remove the transmission to service either of those seals. So pretty much plan on replacing a lot of stuff down there other than just seals. On a manual transmission the pilot bearing, rear main seal and transmission shaft seal is just a few extra stuff i replace along with doing a Clutch job. You're gonna have to remove the transmission to do any of those, so just do them all so you wont have to worry later on.
Thanks for the share - I'm in the Philippines and swapping out a lot of parts for my girl's car and her mechanic did not know about the PCV Valve. Glad that I have your RUclips channel so I can share this with him :)
Thanks. I had my PCV valve changed -- the SOB charged me $1800, and NOW my truck is burning oil. But at least now I know where to look. And the "mechanic" is going to get all the free advertising he can stand...
IMPORTANT!!!!! If your General Motors engine's PCV valve is enclosed in a "chamber", make sure when you replace the PCV valve, you're also adding o-ring "sleeves" to it! The new one doesn't come with the O-rings so match some at OReilly first. Without the o-ring sleeves completing a controlled air path, air squirts around the valve itself (throwing error codes doing so) and you can't pass emissions testing!
Thanks Scotty. I've got an '08 Pilot that's started using a quart of oil between changes but runs smoothly, doesn't leak and doesn't have any visible exhaust smoke. I think this may be the fix.
Hey Scotty, you should invest in a mic. It makes the sound quality better for us, without you having to strain your vocal cords. Very informative as always though :)
My 2001 Lexus ES300 was blowing out a ton of white smoke and burning oil, like 1/3 quart every other week. I observed tailpipe smoke on cold starts ONLY. Once running for ~30-45 seconds it was totally clear. It was also only 4~5 days per week. So it was not consistent in my case... It had good and bad mornings. I took out the PCV valve, soaked it in brake cleaner for 2-3 hours and scrubbed it inside and out with a long bristle brush until the runoff was clean/clear. There was a LOT of old oil clogging it up inside, or at least partially blocking it, and I think this was the cause of the intermittency. Majorly keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping this will carry me over for a few days until I can get a new valve. I am pretty sure this is the OEM PCV, I dont think the previous owner ever changed it. Hoping for the best and thanks Scotty.
Whether your videos are new or old they are always highly educational and equally as entertaining! P.S. I know how you feel about Chevy's but I have 2 Silverado's (a 93' standard transmission and a 00' automatic transmission) and I've taken great care of them and they both run absolutely tip top. The 93' is rusted to all hell (I live in Minnesota) and leaks a little oil but ALWAYS starts and runs with no problems. The 00' is actually in really good shape and is only just now starting to get the classic rust around the wheel wells. They seem to just want to last forever and I have no reason to get rid of them unless I want to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. But why upgrade if they work perfectly fine right?
I like your style. When I was a mechanic I made a lot of good business just helping people out. I know a few who would say bring it by the shop but I would rather keep a car on the road and save them money than let them down. The shop I worked at had good enough business doing heavier repairs and if you think of the shop as an emergency room, how many people clog the halls of an WE because of a common cold compared to actual emergencies. My mother was an RN but did a little wrenching and compared it that way.
Thank you for the information on the PCV valve it worked on my Subaru legacy GT there was no blow smoke coming out of my back end keep on the good work my man

Useful Entertainment The morons that owned the truck before me never did any maintenance now even after I’ve changed the PCV it still puts out blue smoke at start up and is a gross polluter, three times over the max limit. No doubt rings and valve guides are shot. Uses a couple of quarts of oil between changes and 4 of the six spark plugs are gummed up when I change them.

Dax C I highly doubt your crv is fixed, neglected K series Honda engines that burn oil need piston rings, very common.
Frank. T I'll believe that when my shit turns purple and tastes like rainbow shurburt.
I have been watching Scotty's channel for years, and he always has the simplest yet most effective advice. Thanks Scotty.
Hi , do You think this will work on a vw bora ?
@@costelkoko9886 no, those engines aren’t worth fuxing.
a lousy 10 bucks to add a few more years to your cars life? priceless! thanks scotty!
Lol
Troll True on my old Pontiac 301 engine, we had an oil breather tube that would vent into the carburetor cover. At the end of That oil breather tube, it had a breather filter that we would change or clean every other oil change or so.
It's not priceless if it cost 10 bucks ;)
Why would anyone dislike this video? He's giving good advice and is very informative.
+traingp7 People dislike videos just to dislike them. Even if they like the video they just dislike it.
Mechanics that know they'll loose customers after watching this.
traingp7 car dealerships might. Lol
might be the cat friends :v
Anyone threatened by an honest person like Scotty... and jerks in general.
Did you ever figure it out
@@pazuzu810 Replaced the valve cover seals and it stopped smoking under the hood.
This is purely retirement goals. Scotty's mechanical skills are what helped him survive through the dinosaurs
GOOD MAN SCOTTY TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE WITH THEIR CARS AND SAVE MONEY WELL DONE
Was using about a quart every 1000 miles; and this cured the problem totally; GO SCOTTY !!
any updates on the state of the engine 5 years later?
Wow after watching this guy I'm motivated to actually open the hood!
If I were a LOT younger and not married, your picture would motivate me to ask you out. So we're even.
+Last Chance Let me guess, you want to check my oil with your dip stick!
+Jane Morgan No your transmission fluid with my dip stick, it's longer!
+ Last Chance Might as well check my rear end too!
+ Jane Morgan I'm going to need to do a full Dicknostic test and I have a special right now where I top you off with my fluids!
Thanks it helps me I got 2013 toyota venza & I was adding oil every other day when I changed PCV valve & did new oil change it did stopped no more leak or burning
wow now thats alot of oil loss. I changed mines this morning I pray and hope it works.
PCV valves are often overlooked. myn on my honda civic is hidden under the intake manifold. when i finally replaced the pcv it stopped burning oil. good tip
+Mark N and the factory one almost never go bad .. buy aftermarket ,not so much
+Mark N I found out the one on my Focus is also under the IM. Plus some of the bolts are hidden. And the hose is usually toast. I'm still working up the courage to undertake it.
I learn more from you than any of my shop coworkers who refuse to teach me stuff. Thank you scotty.
Love you, Scotty. My friend who helps me out with my vehicle was getting sick of me saying Scotty said this... Scotty said that... BUT now he listens too! I just sent him this video... 😎
Scotty Kilmer is like one of those guys that seem some shit during the war.

AKFGFan low key I bet he probably did.
AKFGFan Like a lot of LSD..Scotty seems kool..Def a mechanic I would take my car to.
AKFGFan hahaha
im always waiting for his signature sound "ughrrrr" when loosing nuts
Lol those "ughrr's" are how I checkpoint where I'm at when I'm following his repair videos!
I did this on my 06 Chrysler 300 3.5L V6 Touring. And I no longer have to top it off. Thank you Scotty!!!
Kids do not be afraid, he is only an old intellectual hippie from your dad's era. He knows his stuff!
PEACE!
He has a Bachelor's as well as a Master's Degree.
Thanks Scotty, you're the best 😁
did it work?
@@buzrash I just got it all changed and the old pcv was plugged up. I'm sure after driving for a little while I will see a big positive change. Sure is great to have Scotty Kilmer helping with all the great advice👍
@@1jackvalley580 thanks for the reply.
Thanks Scotty, I did this a while ago and my car is still burning oil like water. Have to top off every 300 - 400 miles. But still running great with engine light on for catalyst converter.
I have the same exact problem, what was the cause of it?... thanks
Scotty, holla from Russia, your vids automatically translates in Russian- that's awesome, also there are subs in Russian- thank you very much!
Thank you Scotty. My 02 Chevy Tahoe was burning a lot of oil. I changed the PCV valve and now everything is all good now. Thank you.
Perfect. I was actually looking for this exact problem and the very same car. Thanks Scotty.

Have some respect Shannon, he could teach u some shit
Many times it's not the material that is difficult to understand- it's the presenter. Cheers to this guy for getting it right.
Scotty you make every job look easy. Good work and thanks for all your videos!
hey Scotty I say the engine cover is the first sign of the manufacturer saying forget about fixing it your self, we hid everything from you
Ironic since that's a K20/K24
@IT'SME. It may be the badge on your engine cover that caused the failure.😀. Seriously though, I knew one family that had 2 newer Cobalts. Both had major engine trouble within 6 months of each other. Total failure of hard parts like pistons, etc.
Bit late, but the cover quiets down engine noise

Throw away the heat keeping cover.
on my 2001 maxima, I changed my PVC valve and PVC hose for the first time in its 20 years history.
I also switched to 10w30 high mileage from 5w30 high mileage
(owners manual says 10-30 or10-40 can be used in my climate)
I also added AT-205 Re-seal for the rear main seal leak.
I also use 1 qt of oil stabilizer in place of 1 qt of oil.
now its not burning as much oil or leaking as much. cheers
love your positive attitude and educational videos. Thanks for taking the time to edit them the way you do. Notifications are on brother! Thanks for all your help!
LOL when dinosaurs around i was young mechanic
Thank you Scotty. I was having this problem and I got it solved. You saved me from selling off my favorite car.
I bought the Pcv valve on autozone and it came without the flat washer should be all right with out it I got a Honda Accord 2008 I like your videos
This guy would make a good rod Stewart impersonator
Neil Brown, that's fucking hilarious.
I would love to hear him sing MAGGIE MAY, Bet Scottie could sing it just like him!!!!!
Forever young
Rod Stewart or John Lennon?
Haha 10/10.
I can attest to PCV valves cracking or breaking off from the nipple or being clogged up. It’s an easy fix, took me 10 minutes on a difficult car
Thanks Scotty i'm gonna try this first cause my car is burning oil like crazy.
Did it work or not?
how was it?
Hey motivated me to change my spark plug, coils and clean my throttle body. He's freaking amazing!!!!🤟🏽
I know exactly what you did and said in this video but it was refreshing to see someone make a valid video that would help others. No nonsense and simple here is the part, what it does, do this to make it right. Kudos sir I will check out other videos you post. You seem like a person I would be happy to work with, get it done and move onto the next thing. I work with dipshits.
Most people do and that's why it's called work.
"Dipshits"
Everybody has a family that loves them, guy... Maybe if you treated these dipshits like yourself you could become happier doing what yall do

Thanks 😎👍
thanks. Valves are the key to life. Ask my heart that.
great point
WOW!
So, easy, next time I have my cat fix the PCV valve?
Thx, Scotty!!!!
You can test if it is a PCV valve. Take off the oil cap and see if its stil burning oil. If the PCV valve is stuck closed or clogged now you are venting the pressure into the atmosphere.
OMG, I'm definitely going to get a ricer again after watching all these videos. Last 3 cars were german. I miss how easy the repairs are!
Haha, I own a Honda and found your comment hilarious.
There are many things on my car that are easy to fix from one's own driveway.

They should give you a show on Velocity.
legbuh used to do TV, RUclips is tons better, you can tell the truth here and not be cow towing to advertisers like on TV.
Scotty you're a legend that I'll live on through RUclips forever.
Jamie Corbin does it blow smoke out the exhaust? Could be piston rings give way to slight blowby. In that case just burning up the oil
Check for oil pan or a rear main seal leak. The 302 bronco i have, thats mainly wear it leaks from.
If its leaking from either of those 2, the pan and bottom of transmission near where it mates to the engine will most likely have very fresh oil residue,
And you're gonna have to remove the transmission to service either of those seals.
LOVE your LIVE FREE OR DIE shirt!!!!
MERCH IDEA!
Thanks for the share - I'm in the Philippines and swapping out a lot of parts for my girl's car and her mechanic did not know about the PCV Valve. Glad that I have your RUclips channel so I can share this with him :)
I love your cat. Her reactions are similar to mine. Like "get that f*cking thing out of my face please!"
Thank you Scotty for this awesome video. Not only that I learn a lot from your videos, I save a lot as well. Good job 👍
Thanks. I had my PCV valve changed -- the SOB charged me $1800, and NOW my truck is burning oil. But at least now I know where to look. And the "mechanic" is going to get all the free advertising he can stand...
The cat thinks that old pcv valve stinks! 😼
geez i would love to be an aprentice for this bloke
IMPORTANT!!!!! If your General Motors engine's PCV valve is enclosed in a "chamber", make sure when you replace the PCV valve, you're also adding o-ring "sleeves" to it! The new one doesn't come with the O-rings so match some at OReilly first. Without the o-ring sleeves completing a controlled air path, air squirts around the valve itself (throwing error codes doing so) and you can't pass emissions testing!
I used the old o ring for my 2000 Buick regal..with 64k..it was in good shape? But still burning oil
I bought a brand new one from o Reilly for my 02 Silverado 1500 and it literally only cost 99 cents
If you missed how much it costs just hit 1 repeatedly.

Thanks Scotty. I've got an '08 Pilot that's started using a quart of oil between changes but runs smoothly, doesn't leak and doesn't have any visible exhaust smoke. I think this may be the fix.
My Honda is burning oil I will try this the mechanics said I need a whole new motor that I took it too. Fingers crossed this works thanks man
0:37 thanks scotty
I love your energy dude 😭😭😭😭
keep it in your pants mia!
D N youre clearly bored😭😭😭
I like your style. When I was a mechanic I made a lot of good business just helping people out. I know a few who would say bring it by the shop but I would rather keep a car on the road and save them money than let them down. The shop I worked at had good enough business doing heavier repairs and if you think of the shop as an emergency room, how many people clog the halls of an WE because of a common cold compared to actual emergencies. My mother was an RN but did a little wrenching and compared it that way.
Sport bikes, cats and cars. Cool dude.
2:55 Uh-oh, the cat didn't like it! LOL
Thanks for that...brought to mechanic charged me 60 bucks and said nice call !
Thanks! Great, informative and entertaining video. 'Think I'll go check my PCV valve!

The morons that owned the truck before me never did any maintenance now even after I’ve changed the PCV it still puts out blue smoke at start up and is a gross polluter, three times over the max limit. No doubt rings and valve guides are shot. Uses a couple of quarts of oil between changes and 4 of the six spark plugs are gummed up when I change them.
